Warnings: mentions of stress, burnout, zoning out/disassociation, sfw but two 2 jokes because it's angel, not proofread and I wrote this while exhausted
They're trying to shut everything out. First, by cleaning around even if everything is already clean. Then they put their headphones on and switch from app to app, craving the stimulation. Something, anything, that will help them relax a bit. Keep their mind off of the looming deadlines.
As per usual, it is of no use.
As per usual, David notices.
His hand is quick to find the small of their back, bringing them closer. He bends so that his forehead meets theirs and Angels ponders on their height difference with fondness, thankful for this new distraction.
The upbeat end-credit music of the video essay has long since ended, so they can hear when he says:
"What's wrong Angel?" In that tone that makes the tension in their body vanish, even muffled by the headphones.
"Overwhelmed" they take in a shaky breath-
"Too much to do,too overwhelmed to start on it, too stressed to properly relax."
His hands run up and down their lower back, the soothing motion gives them a chance to focus; on the size of his hand, the feel of his skin against theirs, the wooden tile under their feet. It's hard at first, to force their mind onto individual singular things.
He breaks contact only to kiss their hairline twice. They follow the movement of his hand, from their back to their belly to their ribcage then his palm to their jaw and his thumb on their lips.
"Okay" He sais, taking his mates face in between his hands. "We can deal with that"
Arm over shoulder he leads them to the kitchen, sits them down and places another kiss, on their cheek this time.
"I'll make you some herbal tea"
"Apple cinnamon?"
He cracks a smile. "Of course."
As he busies himself in the kitchen, they try not to linger on how much better this time could be spent figuring out how to best tackle theor tasks. Maybe trying to break it down? They could send an email. What would it even say? "Sorry I couldn't figure out a way to better organize, can I make it your problem and inconvenience you???? " no, it just wouldn't do. Maybe if they worked a little late tonight? If they started out now then they could be done by-
His hand is on their shoulder, big and warm.
"Angel?" His voice is laced with concern, and his eyes betray him. He is sitting on a chair next to them.
"Overthinking it won't make it better, Angel. Here, it's warm"
And it is. Their hands circle the cup and the pleasant heat demands their attention. They really give it. That is, until they feel David stroking their hair. A smile forms on their lips, and they cannot help the comment;
"I like when you're handsy with me"
His look of surprise gives way to a chukle that blooms into a full hearted fit of laughter. They chuckle too: mirroring him. His joy is their joy. His laughter illuminates everything.
"Ever the fucking menace I see" his hand is cuping their face, they lean into it and shrug.
"I've got a reputation to maintain"
"You've got a health to maintain as well" He tucks a strand of hait behind their ears.
"Ever the mother hen" comes the reply.
"Someone has to take care of you"
His gaze is adoring, warm and it's too much, too much.
"And is that someone you?" It was supposed to come off as teasing, but it's too soft.
He smiles wider, taps their headphones, asking for permission. They nod and he takes them off, places them on the table.
"Of course I'm the one who will take care of you." He kisses them, on the lips this time, it's gentle and drawn out.
"Always"
"Well" they exhale shakily, "Aren't I lucky"
"Good thing you're aware of it. Drink up, before it gets cold"
They nod and drink, slowly, savoring the flavors and the time spent together in comfortable silence. When they are done, he puts the cup in the sink.
"Shower?"
They nod their head no.
"Already tried it".
"Lotion then."
"If you insist-"
"That's not what I meant and you know it" He grumbles cutting them off and making them chuckle.
"We'll go on a walk and take a nap afterwards" He states, guiding them towards their shared bedroom. And their unease springs back up.
"I don't know if I have the time."
"You do." He squeezes their hip. "It's the best way to help you come down. You won't achieve anything in this state. It'll help you clear your mind. "
Their brows are furrowed still.
"Is it urgent? Due tomorrow or this week?"
"No, but still.."
"Then we can handle after you're properly rested" He squeezes body lotion in his hands, massages their left foot.
"Can we work together? If you have work to do that is."
"I always have work to do, and we can use my office. Or a coffee shop. Whatever helps."
They fall silent as they wait for him to finish. He puts the lotion on the nightstand. And smiles at them. They reach out for his hands and squeeze. He squeezes back.
"Thank you" they whisper.
"You're welcome, Angel"

James got Jamie drunk and got him raped. He forced Jamie to have sex with an adult when Jamie was (and probably the day he turned) 14. James has been beating Jamie for years. James has been abusing Jamie mentally as well, being the cause of Jamie's depression, self-consciousness and many other issues. James has probably been beating up Georgie, too, until she had the means to get out.
There's a huge difference between recognizing your bad behavior (being a jerk and a bully for funsies—which isn't great, too, but it's redeemable, especially since Jamie was basically abused into this behavior) and changing for the better and throwing an abused kid back into his abuser's arms that gave him such severe PTSD that some encounters give him very painful flashbacks. He doesn't even remember his first sexual encounter bc it was so bad that he blocked it out, but he for sure will be triggered again if something like the auction in s1 happens again. Jamie was raped, and by an adult at that, when he was just a teen.
Even if James changes for the better in the future, he already ruined Jamie's life in the ways that Jamie will never be able to fix. Never, no matter how hard he tries and works on himself and goes to therapy. It's the horror that will always stay with him. It's the things that will haunt him in nightmares on his worst days and stop him from falling back asleep.
It doesn't matter if James becomes dad of the year (unironically) and finds a wife that he'll genuinely love and cherish and never show any toxic behavior for the rest of his life (which probably won't happen, I can almost guarantee you that). He will always be a wife beater and child abuser. So when you go on a rant about protecting James and how he's only human, at least remember and admit what he did.
Jamie deserves BETTER and I'll stay on this hill. 'It's been a while'? It should stay that way. Ted never should have told him to forgive him and Jamie should have never reached out to his abuser, let alone visit him in rehab and act like it's all fine and at least 21 years of the abuse didn't happen.
Because it absolutely did.
