Two Lovesick Idiots

I was inspired by this lovely art of Shepard and Kaidan drawn by the incredible @sinclairsolutions - so with their permission for running with this idea, my first fic in twenty years:

Citadel, Silversun Strip, Anderson’s apartment Two weeks before the end of the Reaper War

Tali drops it unceremoniously on the coffee table in front of them, with the air of someone who has both lost a bet and is still somehow smugly triumphant.

“Here.”

Shepard cocks his head. From his position cuddled into Kaidan’s side, the motion causes his closely-shaved scalp to tickle the underside of Kaidan’s chin. 

“What?”

Leave it to Shepard to sound both irritated and intrigued at the interruption. Kaidan kisses the top of his head in amusement.

The party celebrating the demise of Shepard’s clone has been in full swing for most of the night, and it’s showing no sign of slowing down. Kaidan can hear Vega and Cortez over near the bar gleefully explaining biotiball to a surprisingly interested Javik, who’s just declared how much better the protheans would be then the current primitive teams. Kasumi is trying to teach Grunt how to play the piano, with limited success, behind the couch where Kaidan and Shepard have ensconced themselves. Kaidan can see the dance circle in the kitchen still going strong, though now absent two of its erstwhile dancers.

Both of whom are standing in front of the coffee table, Tali gesturing at what she just dropped, Garrus inscrutable as ever.

Kaidan reluctantly pushes his boyfriend—his boyfriend, heart still skipping a beat at getting to call Shepard something so intimate—off of his lap so he can lean forward to pick up what, by all appearances, seems to be a scrapbook. He dimly remembers heirlooms like this back at the orchard: binders of pictures, chintzy artwork, and scribbles commemorating the reunions or anniversaries or what-have-you of various Alenkos over the decades. None of the scrapbooks back home have the violently purple hue of this one, though. None of their titles are quite like what’s emblazoned across the front of this one, either.

Two Lovesick Idiots.

Kaidan raises an eyebrow. “Tali, what is this?”

“I, uh…okay, it was going to be a present later. After. But this one—“ she backhands Garrus in the stomach, who oofs softly “—told me I had to give it to you now.”

“Okay, but what is it?” Shepard says. “I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Kaidan nudges him with his shoulder fondly. “It’s a scrapbook.” At his precious spacer’s precious look of confusion, he continues, “It’s for memories, pictures and things. An old Earth practice.”

Shepard turns his adorably confused gaze to Tali. “But why? And how?”

The tipsy quarian groans in response. “Just open it.”

Kaidan opens the cover. On the first page is a full-sized photograph of Kaidan and Shepard sitting in a bar somewhere. Flux, maybe? He traces his finger over it absently. They look so young. The early days of the SR-1, perhaps. Kaidan’s in the foreground, staring into his drink—whiskey, by the looks of it. Shepard’s seated next to him, giving him a soft, almost secret smile. The candid shot is as sweet as it is striking.

All that time. How did I never know? 

A sweet knot of nostalgia settles in his chest, and he smiles at the memory. “Tali,” he starts to murmur, “where did you…”

That’s when he reads the picture’s caption.

“What.”

Shepard gets to the caption at roughly the same time. But where Kaidan’s knot of nostalgia immediately turns into annoyance, Shepard lets out the most delighted, surprised laugh Kaidan’s heard from him in a long time.

“Tali,” Kaidan says in a measured voice, pointedly ignoring his boyfriend as he dissolves into giggles, “what the hell is this?”

“It’s a gift! A present,” Tali repeats. “Kind of.”

“Kind of?”

“Just…a lot of effort went into this,” she says bashfully. “Keep going.”

He turns the page. This one has two photos, separated by a common caption. The top one is a selfie of the late, great Ashley Williams, clearly taken with her omnitool in the SR-1’s mess. Her face is frozen in mid-cackle, while way in the background over her shoulder, Kaidan and Shepard stand near that console Kaidan was forever trying to repair. The picture on the bottom is zoomed in on them, Shepard’s hand nonchalantly resting on Kaidan’s forearm in mid-conversation. “Ashley? Ashley was in on this?” Kaidan asks incredulously. This sets Shepard off giggling even harder somehow.

Kaidan glances around. The rest of the party is starting to notice. Fantastic.

“It was actually Ashley’s idea,” Tali responds, tipsy mirth tempered a moment by a sort of fond sadness. “She was the first one to figure you two out, I think. She thought this would be a nice memento once you two…um, what was the phrase, Joker?”

“I believe it was, ‘Once those two get their eyes off each other’s asses and get their own asses in gear,” Joker supplies helpfully from the other couch.

Kaidan doesn’t like Joker’s shit-eating grin. Or the hot feeling of the blush that erupts over his own face. He especially doesn’t like that his boyfriend is still giggling.

Said boyfriend snorts in between giggles, “Yeah, that sounds like Ash.”

Tali looks a little unsure, shifting from foot to foot. “Are…are you mad? Is this okay?”

Kaidan’s suddenly very aware that most of the party have crowded around the couch, peering with interest at the scrapbook. Well, mostly they’re staring at their giddy commander.

When it’s just the two of them, Shepard’s learned how to let down his guard. He smiles more, laughs more. The war has taken its toll on him—him more than most, especially after everything in the last three years—but in the privacy of Shepard’s cabin, Kaidan has worked hard to give him space to just be happy.

So anything that makes him happy enough to giggle like an idiot? Around other people, no less?

He shakes his head and gives Tali his biggest grin. “It’s incredible. Thank you.”

Her posture relaxes. “Everyone helped.”

They start flipping through the pages.

“Hey, we were worried that stuff might be corrosive!” Shepard says defensively.

Kaidan chuckles. That hadn’t been…strictly true. More like, he wasn’t going to pass up any opportunity to be in Shepard’s space. Sure, his face in the photo is the picture of seriousness as he plucks a piece of tentacle off of Shepard’s chestplate, but he remembers how hard he had to concentrate not to look at Shepard’s lips instead. 

“Neither of you offered to clean Thorian gunk off my armor,” Garrus grumbles.

Tali pats his arm.

“He’s the one that can’t drive, not me,” Kaidan objects, pushing his again-giggling boyfriend away.

“It does not appear that you are attempting to stop him, Major,” EDI muses from where she’s settled next to Joker.

And indeed, Ash somehow captured a shot of the Mako’s cockpit from the back. Shepard has one fist raised in celebration, while Kaidan’s head is turned in mid yell. There’s no mistaking the fondness on his face, though.

There’s also no mistaking the fact that only sky, no ground, is visible through the Mako’s front window. 

“To be fair, Liara isn’t stopping them either,” Cortez says from over Kaidan’s shoulder.

To be fair, Liara’s passed out from stress in the photo, blue face tinged slightly green as it lolls to one side in her safety harness.

Present-day Liara just sighs.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, really?” Kaidan says incredulously. “We’re commemorating that moment?”

“Eh, you two made up,” Miranda says from the other side of the room, raising her drink in a mock toast, mischievous twinkle in her eye.

Kaidan rolls his eyes.

“Eh, you two made up,” Kasumi’s voice echoes with a laugh.

Picture after picture just like that, chronicling the dance that he and Shepard have been doing around each other for the last three years. And not just pictures, Kaidan realizes.

Some of the pages have text, hard copies of omnitool message chains:

Adjacent to a picture of Kaidan sleeping off a migraine in the SR-1′s medbay and Shepard sleeping in a chair next to his bed, with the caption “Two Lovesick Idiots Are Bad at Sleeping,” photo taken by Karin Chakwas, 2183, a scrawl in silver pen reads: I am very glad that you two have better places to sleep than my medbay now.

Kaidan looks at Shepard. “I don’t remember this.”

Shepard ducks his head a bit, responding, “Not surprised. That one was pretty bad, you were out for a while. I just…wanted to make sure you were okay.”

“By screwing up your spinal alignment?” Traynor says, sitting next to Shepard on the couch and frowning.

Shepard huffs.

On another page, next to a picture of Shepard standing at Kaidan’s bedside in Huerta, seemingly taken through a window, with a caption reading, “Two Lovesick Idiots Have a Very Close Call,” photo taken by Thane Krios, 2186, a note in a different hand reads: It is good to see your soul tu-fira, my friend.

Shepard touches the note, sobering quickly. 

Kaidan furrows his brow. “I don’t understand this one.”

Shepard puts his palm on Kaidan’s cheek, and Kaidan leans into the touch. Shepard gives him a sad smile and says, “Thane. I’ll explain later.”

The final page, though, takes the cake.

The picture’s taken from a weird angle, but it’s striking in a way that stuns Kaidan. On first glance, it’s just a picture of the doors to Starboard Observation as they’re closing. But framed in the doorway, you can see Shepard and Kaidan sitting on the couch, their backs to the door and the camera. The observation window looks out on the starry expanse, silhouetting the pair as Shepard rests his head on Kaidan’s shoulder, Kaidan’s arm around him.

The caption reads, “Two Lovesick Idiots in Love, Fucking Finally,” picture taken by Tali’Zorah vas Normandy, 2186, and for all its tongue-in-cheek snarkiness, it’s the most beautiful thing Kaidan’s seen.

He looks over at his quietly smiling boyfriend and his shining blue eyes. Maybe the second-most beautiful thing.

“Tali,” Shepard says, voice thick with emotion. He stops, swallows, and then starts again, “Everyone. Thank you. This is…unbelievable.”

“What’s more unbelievable is that the two of you finally hooked up!” Vega catcalls, and everyone cheers.

Kaidan rubs the back of his head sheepishly as everyone laughs, looking sidelong at Shepard. Shepard just laughs too and pounces, smothering Kaidan in kisses.

When they come up for air, Tali picks up the scrapbook and says, “Look, see, these rings open up so you can add more pages. You know, if you want to.”

Shepard grins. “Actually, I can think of another photo I’d like to add.”

Years later, amongst the bric-a-brac of a house at an orchard in the Canadian interior, in a row of scrapbooks commemorating the reunions or anniversaries or what-have-you of various Alenkos over the decades, one violently purple scrapbook is given pride of place. And inside, nestled between pages of pictures and printouts and handwritten notes, a specific page sits at what had at one time been the back of the book, but now precedes dozens of recorded memories.

On that page is a picture of Shepard and Kaidan, seated on a couch in an apartment on the Silversun Strip of the Citadel, looking lovingly at each other. On the couch beside them, and arrayed in rows behind them, are some of the people who loved them in that moment, too.

An Annotated Mass Effect Playthrough, Part Five

Flux is my favorite bar in all of the first game, I know there’s not many to choose from, but I like the music best, everybody’s clothed, everyone’s having a good time, there’s slots upstairs for entertainment, there’s dancing, and plenty of space to chill out in.  Also the color scheme is great.  It looks particularly great now with the graphics mod improvements.  

Doran gets a nice glamour shot here.

I’m a tattle tale who always turns this guy in.  I agree with Kaidan...

Also I really love Rita’s quest with her sister.  She loves her sister, Jenna  wants to be helpful, even Doran’s like “Hey I’d love to give her her job back.”  Everyone here is pretty wholesome.  And Jenna gets one of the best surprise appearances in ME3 if you do things right.  ME1Recalibrated fixes the bugs with her quest, too!

Speaking of bugged quests, Hello Conrad!  ME1Recalibrated fixes Conrad’s bug, and even if it doesn’t, ME2Re does.  The only bad thing about that is it makes his apology for accusing you of something you maybe didn’t do make no sense.

Everyone else was sure Conrad would turn out to be evil, too, right? Instead making him into just a big lying dummy with an advanced degree was a great move.  I was kinda hoping he’d show up in the Citadel DLC.   

Harkin is JUST the FUCKING WORST.  I’m always tempted to let Garrus cap him in ME2 because what a waste of air he is and doesn’t learn his lesson.  

This is also maybe the most overt place where FemShep experiences sexism.  I mean, don’t get me wrong, there’s some pretty shitty sexism sprinkled throughout the games (as discussed a bit last post) but ugh this guy, if I could shoot him this game, I might.  At least on renegade playthroughs.

Speaking of Garrus...

Finally, an alien who wants to hang out with us.

As primarily a Kaidan-romancing gal, who tends to keep up with the Kaidan Alenko tag, especially back in the heyday of tumblr, for a while, loving Garrus was... difficult.

In October, when I was finishing up my latest ME3 playthrough and also cleaning up my blog, and also rewatching Doctor Who and thinking a lot about Rose Tyler and Martha Jones, I posted a long thing in a post about Kaidan and Garrus and badly behaving fanbases, which I don’t feel like typing again.  Here’s the whole thing, but I’m going to pull a part of it into here.

I love Garrus, so much.  And I was thinking with this whole parallel DW rewatch / Mass Effect replay think I’m doing right now how both Rose Tyler and Garrus Vakaraian are characters that were ruined for me for awhile due to their respective… overly enthusiastic fanbases who a small percentage of were dicks to people who loved other characters.  The Kaidan tag (and from what I understand Thane got some of this too, but not nearly as bad) was a pretty hostile place for awhile (and yeah I used to regularly check the Garrus tag too and there was a small amount of tag-invasion there but uh, like 5% of what the Kaidan tag got) which made loving the character of Garrus a lot harder for awhile.  But when actually watching seasons 1 & 2 / the end of 4 of Doctor Who, or actually playing the ME games, those characters are awesome.  

Fanbases can be amazing or terrible, and time and time again I think you start to realize that no matter how great a fandom is, there are going to be a few people who can only enjoy themselves by feeding on drama, or on lifting up what they love by stomping on other people/characters/plotlines.  

It’s not fair to characterize everyone who loves a popular thing as someone who does this.  It’s also hard to avoid completely because there will always be jerks, or young/new people who don’t realize what bad form they’re showing.  I did learn by trying to fight it for a year or two, that responding might help that one person not do it again, but it’s not going to stop overall.  

Anyway, don’t be a dick about the things you don’t like.  

It’s sad that even thirteen years past the release of ME1 and eight years past ME3 some people still need to have this fight online.   It’s basically impossible to enjoy like, any non-curated Mass Effect space online because of pissing contests or people spouting the same boring opinions.  Which they’re entitled to.  I’m just real tired of “Kaidan is boring!” “Ashley is a racist!” etc with no further depth of thought being given.

The ability to mute / block people and get away from the worst of it is one of the reasons I’m still on tumblr.  Especially always mute/block “confessions” blogs.  Yeesh.

I’m glad Garrus is here, and I’m glad he’s on the team.  What’s funny though, is that people tend to forget that Garrus like, wasn’t really all THAT popular of a character before ME2.  I know I was only in the fandom for a year before ME2 but I dug in pretty deep in that time.

It wasn’t until he gets his face blown off and starts talking about Old Times that a lot of people started to REALLY like him.  He’s still great in ME1, but not like, elevated to god-tier that so many people did post ME2 release.  But in ME1 he IS neat because he’s really malleable.  Probably the companion who can have the biggest personality shift depending on your choices.

Also, I remember a time when the people who wanted to romance Garrus were like... outliers?  I remember thinking “GARRUS?  As a romance?  That’s... weird.  Who would do that!?”

OH HOW I WAS WRONG.  But that was before reach and flexibility.

Hey I even have a Shep that romanced Garrus in ME2 and ME3.  And I loved it!

Were I to replay a different Shep, she’d be my first choice.

So yeah, I love Garrus, I keep Kaidan in the squad all the time in ME1 and the other spot I try to rotate everyone else somewhat evenly, but you’ll see plenty of him.  Then ME2 he’s by my side most of the way.  And an awful lot in ME3, too.  But I’m happy for him to get crushed on by Dr. Michele and glad to see him and Tali find happiness in ME3.  SO that’s the path we’ll be going down if we get that far here.

I love the Destiny Ascension flyby moment on the Citadel, and it’s so easy to miss.  Also really hard to get good screenshots of.  Thanks Flycam.  Don’t pay attention to the untextured wall in the first pic, just look at the pretty lights!

What an amazing entrance for Urdnot Wrex.

“I want you to try!”

Hell.  Yeah.

Here’s where the somewhat in somewhat evenly comes in.  I probably do favor Wrex and Ashely in the squad in ME1 a little because... well you know what’s coming for Ash and Wrex you get the least amount of time with by far of the other companions.  Also, he’s just... great?  A tank, with some biotics and a shotgun... okay well so am I as a vanguard, but Kaidan has just enough tech powers for us to muddle through where we need to when Wrex is in the squad and he’s so much fun to have around.  His “Fuck you, I don’t care” attitude is great, and his growth story throughout the trilogy is one of the best arcs a character gets, imho.  I just really love Urdnot Wrex.

This is a real nice flight control office you’ve got here, C-Sec.  It would be a shame if someone planted a bug in it later, since literally anyone can just walk on up here uncontested.

This entire area really is so pretty though.

I always pump points into Paragon as much as possible from as early on as possible, and saving these poor guys’ lives is one of the big reasons.  They don’t need to die.

Ash usually still stays in the party up to this point, though sometimes it’s Garrus.  Fist is still a dick in ME2 but he doesn’t need to die here, sorry Wrex.

...raise your hand if you still occasionally forget to pick up Emily Wong’s evidence and have to reload.  I remembered!  ...once I was almost out of Chora’s Den and had to turn around this time.

Kaidan?  Kaidan my love?  My darling... perhaps YOU shouldn’t be the one standing in the middle of the corridor with no barrier or protection?  (I suppose I could scooch over but then I’d look less badass for these screenshots.  Naaah.)

It’d be a shame if someone properly lit the corridor so we could see what’s going on.

But hey... TALI!  Tali Tali Tali!  The first quarian we see, and only one for... awhile?  Is there another quarian in this entire game? I’m trying to remember and seriously can’t think of one.

Anyway, I love Tali, but another character you really need to ignore their most rabid fanbase portions of.  Yikes, Talimancers were really something back in the day.  The biggest problem I have with Tali being in the squad is that normally she’s REALLY useful against Geth and... not so much against just about anything else.  She gets sidelined on my team more than I wish she would.  Especially since she doesn’t show up until very late in ME2 and late-midway through ME3.

Finally, the proof we need.  And the game continues to introduce new concepts to us with the Conduit and we hear the word Reapers for the first time.  We also get a loredump on the quarians and the geth.  

Tali’s voice doesn’t have quite as heavy of an accent in ME1 as it does in 2 and 3.  I guess we can assume she’s lost part of it while on her pilgrimage?  Picking up the local dialects a bit?  The next two times we see her she’s just spent a lot of time with her own people.

Tali’s suit and omnitool look SO GOOD with the updated textures.

I swap Ash out and Tali in at this point, and usually finish up a few more quests along the way.

Ah, Septimus.  You lovesick fool.

Honestly, the very best thing with Septimus is to bring Garrus here if you’re gonna romance him, have Garrus laugh at him for coming undone for love and then... well, ME2 and especially ME3 happen.  But still.  Septimus... always needs a kick in the pants but will get around to doing the right thing.

Look, I have questions about what exactly Xeltan told the consort and how... all that... works... but... I don’t think I actually want to ask them.  Just.. let’s all shut up about all of it, it’s over now.

BTW, according to one of the novels, Councilor Anderson finds Ambassador Cayln super annoying.  I need to re-read that book.

Coming at ya with Actual Proof and a quarian tagging along to back up the claims, the Council is ready to listen.  And while not surprising that it’s finally time to become a Spectre, the actual ceremony is really well done.  With the swelling theme music blaring, and all three councilors stressing what a big deal this is and what will be expected of you, you really feel the weight of this moment.  People take notice.  Although apparently later, Kaidan or Ash get an entire televised event around becoming a Spectre, I guess there’s no time for that right now.

It definitely feels like the game so far has been building towards this moment, not only with POUNDING it into your brain about who Spectres are and why they’re so important and letting you know you’re being evaluated... but it feels like there’s been a shift in the game after this moment.  It’s A Big Deal.

I didn’t finish all the sidequests on the Citadel yet, they can wait, I’ve been here long enough.  Let’s go check out the new cool stuff we can buy.

ME1Recalibrated adds in this Spectre Armor.  Eeehhhhh... no thanks.  We’ll stick with Onyx.

I did cheat myself in a bunch of credits and picked up Spectre weapons though. This ain’t no tryhard playthrough.

Omg before Trespasser is such a weird state of flux for her. At that point, she’d hit a weird low as Inquisitor, just existing to exist and doing what she needed to as time passed. 

And to be shippy for a second, Solas wasn’t her whole life, but I think she did spend a month wondering if he WAS going to come back. It’s implied that he tended to wander off from Skyhold for a few weeks anyways so she was like ‘hm. Hm??’ before it finally hits that no, he’s not. She finally gets to grieve properly about the whole situation regarding them, especially heartbroken when she finds the things he left behind in Skyhold like old sketchbooks, notes, and his necklace that had been strangely left on her desk. But she shoves all that down pretty quick and bottles it up however she can even while stuck in a strange lovesick limbo. 

Being the Inquisitor would’ve been fine with her if she wasn’t watching her friends move on like they did. I think she wound up resenting the situation even more as the Inquisition went from her found family when her life had been so terrifying and tumultuous, to just her alone with no one to communicate to past her advisors and letters. She couldn’t even visit her family in Wycome, so within the first year, she goes from a very sunny disposition to something rather stoic and morose (kind of like the way Ameridan is when you meet him/listen to his memories)

Her greatest fear in the Fade tombstones was ‘losing loved ones’ so the whole situation is just balls for her. AND she doesn’t even get a dog :(

Current Underrated Girl Groups [Part. 3]

1. April

Fave Songs: “Take My Hand”, “Mayday”, “Muah”, “Lovesick”, “Tinkerbell”

Reasoning: I think they are underrated because people see them as just another girly kpop group. And those tend to get swept under the radar these days unless they just happen to automatically grab attention with their debut. April’s debut wasn’t great, but with each comeback they have improved and grown a lot. They are very talented and adorable and you should give them a chance. 

2. Good Day

Fave Songs: “Rolly”

Reasoning; Granted they just recently debuted and Jiwon and Lucky are gaining attention on The Unit. But, as a whole they haven’t been noticed very much. I have high hopes for them and hope they become popular soon. They are very bubbly, cute, and bright. You should look into giving them a chance. I know they only have 4 songs out right now and so there isn’t much to go on. But I’m sure they have great things to come. So just keep an eye on them and give them a chance. 

3. CLC

Fave Songs: “I Like It”, “Like”, “Hobgoblin”, “No Oh Oh”, “High Heels”, “Eighteen”

Reasoning; CLC has been underrated since their debut. The debut didn’t gain much traction. Hobgoblin seems to be their most popular song so far, but even so I don’t think there has been a flux of CLC fans coming in. They are super talented and their songs are so catchy and nice. 

4. Dia

Fave Songs: “Goodnight”, “Can’t Stop”, “My Friend’s Boyfriend”, “Mr. Potter”, “Look”, “Darling My Sugar”, “Somehow”

Reasoning: Even with Cathy and Chaeyeon on Produce 101 and Chaeyeon even making it into I.O.I; the group hasn’t had a large popularity. They are still relatively unknown. Although Yebin and Somyi are doing well on The Unit and pulling in more fans. They are still nowhere near as popular as they deserve to be. They are cute and sweet and super talented. Their songs are catchy too. 

5. Oh My Girl

Fave Songs: “Secret Garden”, “Liar Liar”, “Coloring Book”, “A-ing”, “Cupid”, “One Step, Two Steps”, “Windy Day”, “Closer”

Reasoning: In my opinion they have been fairly unpopular, especially internationally [which is majority what i base these lists on]. Anyway, their songs are super catchy and beautiful. They are beautiful, talented girls and they deserve to be recognized for it. 

6. Playback

Fave Songs: “Want You To Say”, “Playback”

Reasoning: No one really knows of them or who they are. They were basically completely unnoticed until their newest song “Want You To Say”. Thankfully it was an amazing song, and on trend for the kpop industry and so it’s gaining some attention. Honestly, they are so talented and deserve so much more popularity than they have right now. 

7. Rubber Soul

Fave Songs: “Love Is”, “Life”, “Freedom”

Reasoning: Honestly they are so underrated that I thought they disbanded until Kim showed up on The Unit. I think because they aren’t super girly and cute and are hip hop they don’t get a lot of attention. But they are super talented. You should at least listen to them once and give them a chance. 

8. Bolbbalgan4

Fave Songs: “Some”, “You and Me From the Start”, “Fix Me”, “Blue”, “Galaxy”, “Imagine”

Reasoning: I think people know the songs, but they don’t have a face to the name. I don’t think they know who sings it. But she has sung a lot of popular songs like OSTs and even their group songs. It’s just no one knows the face behind the voice. Her voice is so beautiful and unique and the songs are catchy and mellow and beautiful. 

9. Cosmic Girls [WJSN]

Fave Songs: “I Wish”, “Kiss Me”, “Happy”, “MoMoMo”, “Baby Face”

Reasoning: Despite having an I.O.I member added to them, their popularity hasn’t gone up significantly. But I love them, they are so cute and talented and their songs are super catchy. They deserve a lot more recognition and love than they receive. Also there are 13 members so you’re bound to like one of them. 

10. Gugudan

Fave Songs: “A Girl Like Me”, “Wonderland”, “Ice Chu”

Reasoning: Despite not 1, but 2 members from I.O.I the group just has not seen the popularity they deserve. They are beautiful and so talented. You’ll like them once you give them a chance. They have catchy songs as well. They deserve so much more love and support than they have received.  

11. Momoland

Fave Songs: “Boom Boom”, “Freeze”, “Jjan! Koong! Kwang!”

Reasoning: Although their recent comeback “Boom Boom” is gaining some attention, before they were completely unknown. Overall I feel like they certainly haven’t reached the level of popularity that they can. They deserve so much because they are so talented. Their songs are super catchy and bright. 

12. Wable

Fave Songs: “I Want to Fall in Love”, “Violet Fragrance”, “Little Miss Sunshine”, “Mallang Mallang”

Reasoning: I think because they are more indie they aren’t known. I’m not sure anyone has even heard of them. None of their songs have garnered much attention or views on youtube. Although, people have probably heard them from the Reply 1988 ost but don’t know who sings it. Their voices are so sweet, and their songs are soothing and mellow and they are talented and beautiful and deserve more attention. 

13. Matilda

Fave Songs: “You Bad! Don’t Make Me Cry”, “Summer Again”, “Macarena”, 

An Extra Special 

Reasoning: NO ONE EVEN KNEW THEY EXISTED until they went on “The Unit” Even so, I haven’t seen a spike in their popularity or youtube views. They are so EXTREMELY talented!! They are beautiful, and sweet and work so hard. They deserve so much more than they have gained so far. Why is everyone sleeping on them omg! Just listen and you will see how talented they are. 

14. A.de

Fave Songs: “Laputa”, “Good Time”, “Strawberry”

Reasoning: Their highest viewed song has only 300,000 views. Literally no one knows of them or knows they exist. I actually really love their song “Laputa”  and I think they have a lot of talent and potential if they were able to garner the attention for funds they would be able to do so much more music wise. With a small company and small budget they do the best they can, but they deserve so much more. 

15. Highteen

Fave Songs: “Boom Boom Clap”, “Would You”

Reasoning: No one knows of them, their debut song only has 700,000 views but it’s also 2 years old. They have no popularity, no recognition and no funds. If they did I’m sure they could come out with really amazing music. They are actually talented and cute and bubbly.

Out of curiosity, I listened to some I did take the time to vote in the OASIS elections, however, because their outcomes actually affected me. The voting process only took me a few minutes, because I was already familiar with all of the major issues GSS had put on the ballot. It was also time to elect the president and VP of the OASIS User Council, but that was a no-brainer. Like most gunters, I voted to reelect Cory Doctorow and Wil Wheaton (again). I pulled up my programming grid and made a few changes to my evening lineup. I cleared away the episodes of Riptide and Misfits of Science I’d programmed and dropped in a few back-to-back flicks starring Gamera, my favorite giant flying turtle. I thought they should be real crowd pleasers. Then, to finish off the broadcast day, I added a few episodes of Silver Spoons.

because nobody asked for it, here’s my review of every song on pop music/false b-sides

pop song- fantastic start to the album. my favorite song (on the album, by baths, and just in general). it has four lines but they perfectly convey a complex relationship from the pov of someone who feels unrequited love but still needs to be around them because it’s all they have. the music captures exactly how that feels. i can hardly put into words how perfect this song is.

overseas- very lovely song. no words and it’s short but it makes me feel happy when i listen to it and gives me those good sailing vibes.

nordic laurel- really really good. it’s hard to explain how good these songs sounds but i really like the way this one sounds, both the music and the singing. tells a nice short story that gives me feelse bc king of the nordic laurel.

turian courtship- incredibly atmospheric and beautiful. this one doesn’t have words either, but the title and the feeling it invokes when you listen is enough to set the scene. i can definitely imagine a couple meeting and slowly falling in love to this song (and i have, many times).

somerset- i guess this one is my default least favorite song (but on a perfect album that hardly means anything). can’t really specify a scene/mood that i get from this one but it’s still very pretty and soothing.

seaside town- my original favorite before pop song and damnation took over my life. i’m in love with the ocean, so this song already vastly appeals to me. with the gorgeous music mixed with the ocean sound effects, i could listen to this song forever honestly. the dialogue sampled from kiki’s delivery service is just the icing on the cake, and that’s my fave ghibli movie so basically this song was made for me.

tatami- this one is so...peaceful and i feel very calm listening to it. it’s kinda like somerset thugh i do like this song better. and the lyrics are beautiful, it’s like listening to a couple’s last words before they die in each other’s arms.

flux- this is definitely the most musically interesting song on the album (besides maybe damnation). the beginning hits you so hard it doesn’t even sound like a song at first it sounds like a computer program messing up. but when the actual music for the rest of the song hits, it’s incredible. the lyrics are probably my favorite on the album (besides the obvious). this song is really really personal to me because i listened to it CONSTANTLY when i was preparing myself to come out and it really helped me to be brave and it still is while i continue to come out to more people because that shit never really ends. i know i’ll always have this song. i actually e-mailed will wiesenfeld about it and got a reply and it’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to me.

stupor- absolutely one of my faves. definitely the most fun track on what’s mostly a pretty calm album. it perfectly captures the feeling of being happy drunk at a party and so in love and being someone who so easily falls in love and being surrounded by all your peers that are the exact same way and i just love it so much. i listen to it constantly.

iniuria palace- i joke about this song being rly emo (especially bc it goes from the happiest song on the album to the saddest) and it is but that’s kinda the point. the “brokenhearted teenager” line kinda sums it all up and gives reason for all the other lyrics. it’s young love gone bad. but it still doesn’t feel juvenile. like. adult relationships can still be like this bc ppl never grow the fuck up. and i just love the piano in this song like it draws you in immediately.

lovesick synthetic- damn so many songs on this album are so fucking sad. anyway, this one is great. as much as i love will’s voice, the robot voice saying things like “i miss you so much” and "you’re so beautiful please come back to me” is so heartbreaking and simple that i wouldn’t have it any other way.

the vapors- this one is like overseas for me. no words, but i like the music a lot. of course the dripping water sound it’s going for appeals to my Water Element Aesthetic.

damnation- the PERFECT end to this album. i LOVE that the best songs on this album are the very first and the very last songs with still a bunch of perfection in between. i can’t even describe how it feels to listen to this song. it’s just incredible. the music slowly fading fading in at the beginning, the powerful vocals that i love to scream whenever i’m listening to this song in the car, the two lines of lyrics which is all you need because it tells you all you need to know and GODDAMN IF YOU ARE GONNA HURT MY CHILDREN, the outstanding music, which, again, i can’t even describe. it’s just a masterpiece. you gotta listen to it. this song slays my existence every day.

SO BASICALLY i’ve been obsessively listening to this album and every song on it for years and i’m always talking about all the sngs and why they’re abslute Gems to me. it is my FAV album and pop song and damnation are like my favorite songs of all time and just. this album is my url for a reason okay please listen to it you have to HEAR IT to really experience because the sound is most of what makes it so amazing.
