#low blood sugar
Note
How long before a person passes out from low blood sugar do they have symptoms? Also, how would you go about treating low blood sugar if someone passes out?
Depends.
Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) that is bad enough for the person to become unconscious is usually caused by insulin or another medication that treats diabetes.
How long it takes is different depending on how much of the drug they took relative to their tolerance and how fast the drug acts. For example, some insulins begin working in 15 minutes and peak in 30-90 minutes. So someone taking an abnormally large amount of that kind of insulin relative to their blood sugar and not eating could have hypoglycemia symptoms that start less than 15mins before they pass out.
Meanwhile someone who takes an large amount of a long-acting insulin with less of a peak (but, say, doesn't eat at regular intervals throughout the day), might have 45 mins to an hour of symptoms before they pass out.
Not everyone with hypoglycemia will pass out, and most people taking these medications know the warning signs early enough that they can prevent unconsciousness by eating or taking quick-acting glucose.
But if they do become unconscious there are a few rescues available.
In a hospital setting (or in an ambulance) if the person has an IV line, something called "D50" is given. This is a sterile syrup of 50% dextrose, which is a kind of sugar that quickly metabolizes into glucose (the kind of sugar in the blood).
If the person does not have an IV line, another drug can be given as an injection into a muscle. This is called glucagon. Glucagon is a hormone that causes the liver and muscles to dump all their stored sugar into the blood stream. This causes the blood sugar to rise enough to get the person conscious again so they can eat.
Because glucagon only works because there is stored sugar in the muscles and liver, it can only be given twice in any single episode of hypoglycemia. So it's important to get an IV even if the person becomes conscious so D50 can be given if the person needs more sugar and can't take it by mouth.
Both of these work within seconds or minutes.
If the person is in a wilderness or remote setting, there is another, somewhat less effective option. If the person is unconscious and cannot eat, putting them on their side and putting sugar (usually something like black decorator's icing because it fits nicely in a first aid kit and no one wants to eat it if they don't have to) in the lower side of their cheek may work.
It's slow because the mucous membranes don't absorb a lot of sugar quickly, but it's better than the alternative, which is pretty much death.

a bit of a more personal piece. I deal with Type 1 Diabetes. The Lord God almighty has seen me through so much over 23 years of maintaining it. It's been rough but God is ever faithful.
I sometimes see other T1D people where they embrace it to the point thats all they are- someone with T1D. I can't help but feel sad about that. I have joy in my identity with the Lord and not my condition and I hope other find their identities in Him as well.
But for those who arent, Who are you besides the needles,pumps,finger sticks,and highs and lows? There's more to life than just your numbers and corrections. Take care of yourself, but please remember: You are not your T1D. You are stronger than your T1D.

I second low blood sugar dazai bc I love projecting my own hypoglycemia onto characters,,, he knows full well he should keep snacks in his desk but he doesn't ❤️
Dazai is the king of self sabotage but in the "It's probably fine" kind of way where he thinks he's its something he'll get used to over time but he never does 😭😭 he passes out after standing up after spending all day at his desk and of course Atsushi is very concerned but Kunikida is like You Mother Fucker

MORE Ivan angst
OOC: okay yeah. I KNOW ive tortured him enough with "The Confession of Ivan Goncharov" and "Likeable, but not Lovable" but come ON.
Anyways today's angst story is named "Standing Up Too Fast" :3
Uhh dizziness... hallucinations... religious imagery... blood... yeah! Stuff like that
1st person POV !
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was sat down. I was utterly exhausted, extremely tired. I had completed all of master's chores in quick time today. He was going to arrive earlier and I did not have as much time to complete my tasks that day.
As I moved around a few things on the table, I could see a figure in the corner of my eye. I did not bother to turn to it; this had happened too many times before, to the point it had no effect on me. I was unfazed.
Until it called out my name. Basically screaed it into my ear. Of course, that made me jolt, and I got up from my seat.
I stood up too fast.
I recognized it quickly. When I thought I heard a voice and it made me jump up from my seat. When my body started to lightly sway, back and forth, before my legs gave out and I fell back into my seat.
I stood up too fast.
I recognized it when my vision started to go black, before it came back to me. Even then, I could start to see little dots of color begin to shroud my vision. My skin was paler than usual and I could feel myself start to sweat. Was my blood sugar going low?
I stood up too fast.
I tried to stand again. My vision was beginning to go black yet again. My eyes were wide open and I was trying not to let my eyelids droop shut. I was trying not to let myself relax and fall. I could barely stand, I was holding onto random furniture for dear life as I tried to find someone- anyone- to help.
I stood up too fast.
What would I even say? Would I be able to get a word out? I wasn't sure. I was too tired to think. I wanted to sleep but I couldn't; master needed me. Master did everything for me. And yet I couldn't think of any time where I felt safe to go to him for these kinds of situations.
I stood up too fast.
I stood up too fast when I first met him. I accepted his offer too quickly. I believed he was the only thing that could make me happy. I love master. I can't leave him. But I accepted his offer too quickly. I stood up because I believed he was a messenger from God, that he was the Father, that he was the Son and an ally of the Holy Spirit. He was not.
I stood up too fast.
And now I'm too weak to walk.
...
I let myself fall to my knees. And lay on my stomach.
I stood up too fast.
And now I close my eyes to rest. Just a little.
I trusted you too fast."
P.S, he starts using less formal talk after the first 'I stood up too fast'.
I am so overly proud of myself but I actually caught myself going into hypoglycemia!! Normally it just takes me by surprise but this time I recognized the sweats/chills, dry mouth, drowsiness, trembling, tingling limbs, erratic heart rate, etc!! I feel so proud of myself lmao. I hope maybe some day I'll be able to get a glucometer and maybe it could help me know how severe these lows are. Anyway, oops it's getting worse and now I got a headache and ringing in my ears because I'm typing instead of drinking my juice lmfao.
Ugh. Had an unexpected glitch to my awesome dietary report earlier, lol.
Basically, it's not ended how I'd planned for.
My fast time will be much shorter tomorrow, and my macro's are nothing like the numbers I posted!
Never mind. These things happen.
No matter how fabulous I feel and how well things are going, my type one diabetes can always jump in and give me a slap round the face!
Gotta roll with the punches, accept life will occasionally trip me up and remember to not sweat the small stuff!
Tumblr media
So I've given myself a break.
Not only is my diabetes taking liberties, but my hormones have decided to step into tonight's little "dance off" too.
Oh well. Carbs happen 😂😂.
Banana, peanut butter and greek yoghurt.
I've had my moment, I've eaten it, I'm moving on.......
oh fuck lu are you ok?
Lucifer: *waking up* Huh…what happened?
Ozzie: Here. Drink slow. *hands Lucifer a glass of water*
Lucifer: *sips it* Thanks…
Ozzie: You fainted. I think your blood sugar is low.
Lucifer: *begins to panic* How’s my baby?
Ozzie: The baby is fine. Osian is fine as well. You need to relax. You’re stressed and haven’t been eating — and don’t lie and save you have because you’re so skinny that I can count the teeth poking through your cheeks.
Lucifer: I…may have felt a bit sick to eat lately.
