another thing i noticed is that, like, the "who died and made him king of snacks?" scene is not this moment of lottie putting travis in his place, this big "gotcha moment, that sometimes the fandom makes it seem to be
of course, at first, lottie does call him out on his behavior when she says "maybe you didn't noticed, but we're kind of in a situation here, flex"
and while calling him "flex" and with an emphasis on that word was definetely a snide remark, courtney eaton's delivery is not nearly as bossy as oftenly ppl make it seem to be, she has a much more concearned tone, which is aligned with the idea that lottie "doesn't talk shit unless someone really deserves it" as nat said in pilot episode
and she wasn't totally wrong, bc, while we are shown right after that that travis stole the snacks for javi, it was still a bit of a selfish move to try to protect his sibling only and leave all the others to fend for themselves
and, as for the "king of snacks" line specifically, lottie says it in a low voice, almost like she's whispering, just so the other girls could hear, with courtney's voice almost mumbling the last word, almost as if lottie was biting her tongue
which shows that it was more of like a gossip for the team, the people she trust, rather than this big girlboss moment
it's definetely a line that is sassy, but it's not something that contradicts the idea that lottie is an introvert, as i've seen some ppl say in the fandom
just like with the kelly kapowski moment in pilot episode, it's another display of lottie feeling comfortable around her team, which is a type of social environment that sort of forces ppl to develop a sense of intimacy in a locker room
but when it comes to actual confrontation, she still wavers a bit and seems hesitant, just like when shauna, tai and nat were discussing the allie problem in pilot episode
and that is something that is deliberate, because, like i said in another post, we're supposed to be caught by surprise when we see lottie's heel-turn in episode 1x09 "doomcoming"
we're supposed to not realize on our first watch that this girl is the girl who will end up becoming a cult leader in both 90s timeline and the present day timeline
and the plot twist of lottie's cult leader transformation only works if we get surprised that this girl who used to bite her tongue for the sake of avoiding conflicts at home and in school becomes this outspoken leader that entrances people
and even then, we actually see in season 2 how she struggles with that
i think maybe some ppl just take the fact that lottie becomes a cult leader as an adult and take for granted her confidence in public speaking, but, as courtney always says in interviews, her lottie is still in the darkness and simone kessell's lottie is in the light, and a long journey happened so that teen lottie could reach that point in which adult lottie is as a forty-something
transformation is an important theme for lottie as a character, something that we can see even in make-up details like her tattoo on her left arm in adult timeline, a tattoo that simone kessell herself helped the make-up team design inspired by the Indigenous Maori tattoo art tradition, the ta moko, and using the koru symbol, an spiral shape inspired by a newly unfurling frond from a silver fern and that means, amongst other things, "new life"
one of the main reasons why adult lottie seems so proud and imposing is because of how she was capable of reinventing herself, and if we miss this, we're missing a huge part of what makes lottie, lottie

Star Trek, 105 (Oct. 6, 1966) - “The Enemy Within” [Production order #05]
Written by: Richard Matheson Directed by: Leo Penn [TRIGGER WARNING: Some discussion of attempted SA is necessarily touched upon in my review of this episode.]
This is the Episode Where…
The time-honoured tradition of transporter accidents begins! Kirk is split into two versions of himself, one positive, the other negative. Naturally the good Kirk is an intelligent-but-emotionally-timid-cuck, and the evil Kirk is a raging psychopath sex-crazed-bad-boy. Along the way, Spock imparts his hilariously troubling views about the human psyche.
The Breakdown
The crux of this episode’s conflict stems from two key talking points, so let’s start with the transporter B-Plot, before we tackle the significantly more problematic A-Plot.
Let the transporter shenanigans begin: The Enterprise crew are surveying one of the many styrofoam-desert-planets scattered across the alpha quadrant, when their geologist sustains an injury from a rockslide that subsequently covers him with a yellow powdered-ore that fucks up the transporters after he gets beamed to the ship for medical treatment. Shortly thereafter, Kirk also beams back up, but he arrives with some dizziness and a somewhat lethargic demeanor. Since even the slightest frailty is so unlike the incredible specimen-that-is-Kirk, Scotty escorts him into the corridor (leaving the room unattended), when the transporter pad fires up again on it’s own, and spits out a second kirk; except this one is FUCKING INSANE!
While the Good-Kirk/Bad-Kirk debacle carries on over in the A-Plot, Scotty is hard at work establishing his reputation as a miracle worker. You see, after Kirk’s literal-split personality disorder starts up, the survey team (now led by Sulu) sends up an indigenous alien unicorn-dog they found (essentially just a normal dog in a cute little horned onesie), which also splits into calm-v-rabid duplicates. Scotty quickly figures out that the yellow ore is the problem, meaning that until he can fix it, he doesn’t dare beam anyone else back up without risking a transpo-splitting fiasco, leaving the landing party stranded. The problem is that night is fast approaching down on styro-firma, where the temperatures drop well below freezing as the sun goes down, meaning poor Scotty’s working against the clock. Classic!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, thankfully Scotty whips up a way to reverse the splitting process on the unicorn-dog, but the shock of being re-merged into one pup tragically kills it. Naturally, Spock recklessly proposes that the two Kirks give the transporters a whirl next, despite the risks, because the story needs to keep moving. And speaking of the two Kirks, lets switch over to the A-plot!
Seeing Double: Yeah, so Kirk gets split in two. Here’s the basic expository low-down from Spock’s own mouth; Good-Kirk is compassionate and intelligent, and Bad-Kirk rageful and willful. This means (according to some incredibly tenuous logic) that while the good Kirk is more pleasant, his ability to take decisive action is significantly diminished, compromising his ability to command. Likewise, Bad-Kirk is capable of making decisions very quickly, but he’s a sexual predator, so… ‘nuff said.
Oh, and in case you thought I was exaggerating, Bad-Kirk’s first impulse is legitimately to straight up enter his Yeoman’s (Janice Rand’s) quarters and force himself on her. Thankfully she manages to call for help before things become tragic, but not before getting deeply uncomfortable to watch. Naturally everyone doubts her story about Kirk’s attempted assault (because that’s so implausible…), but after Scotty fills them in about the unicorn-dog, Spock figures out what’s going on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The rest of the episode carries on with the standard cat-and-mouse hijinks one might expect from an episode like this, as Bad-Kirk lunges around like a cocaine fueled maniac, and Good-Kirk essentially does what ever Spock suggests. Of course, it’s all made unnecessarily complicated by the fact that none of the crew are aware of the situation, since filling them in (according to some more impeccable logic by Spock) would cause the crew to doubt their captain. You see, Captains aren’t allowed the luxury of weakness, and anything short of absolute perfection would compromise Kirk’s rank and status… which is to be protected at all costs, apparently. Consequently, this upkeep of deception stretches out the episode’s runtime until the last few minutes, at which point Spock and co. corral the two Kirk’s into the transporter to be rejoined, which works perfectly.
Oh yeah, and Sulu’s landing party gets to come home now too, so it all works out!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Verdict
I’m not going to waste time explaining how the pop psychology of a nearly-60-year-old show is wildly flawed. Obviously the will to act is no more inherently tied to our rage and carnal desires, than intelligence is inherently tied to compassion and emotional frailty. The show needed an excuse to pit Kirk against himself, and the writers used their limited understanding of a medical field that was still in its infancy. The various assertions this episode makes about masculinity and psychology, is clearly tied to biases that would have been remarkably common for that era, to the point where I’d have been genuinely surprised if it wasn’t prevalent throughout the series. Some of Spock’s advice sounds not unlike something that Roger from ‘Mad Men’ might say, while downing an old fashioned and ogling his secretary; it’s so brazenly wrong that I can’t help but find it funny.
Which brings us to Janice.
After escaping Kirk’s attack, Janice heads straight to Sickbay, which is a good call. Using all of his tact and consideration as a medical professional, McCoy (with Spock) responds by summoning her alleged attacker while she’s still in the room. It’s obviously the good Kirk that arrives, but at this point no one is aware there’s two of them, and that’s when things start to get… icky. For starters, there is a distinct undercurrent within the scene that Kirk's reputation, and the preserving of it, is a higher priority than Janice's wellbeing. Even though she's visibly shaken, and disheveled, the three men all stand over her domineeringly as Kirk tests her stories for inconsistencies. Janice goes on to explain that normally she wouldn’t have resisted (he is the captain after all), but that she was just so surprised. Oh yeah, and there's also the fact that he was harming her that she didn’t care for either. Thankfully a crewmember with a penis, who actually witnessed the event (Bad-Kirk bludgeoned him for intervening), is able to set the record straight that someone with Kirk’s face definitely did attack her. With that cleared up, everyone quickly moves on because Janice’s trauma no longer drives the plot forward.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But the real kicker is in the final scene. With Kirk restored, Janice let’s him know that he’s off the hook, given the circumstances. It’s certainly not like he owes her a profuse apology for the 50% of him that evidently wants to take-and-possess her like an object, right? Because I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that Spock and McCoy each hold to the principle that both Kirks are equally necessary parts of his collective psyche. So, while Kirk “innocently” carries on with his captaining, Spock leans over to Janice and playfully insinuates that she probably kinda liked the attention Bad-Kirk gave her. Isn’t that neat? [Haha! The world is a nightmare.] Janice simply responds with a glowering look, which normally I would assume is her politely telling Spock to get Pon Farred. Unfortunately, context clues bring me to infer that she’s conveying embarrassment, indicating that Spock is meant to be partially correct, according to whoever wrote/signed off on this poorly conceived scene (official credit goes to Richard Matheson, but I’m not letting Gene Roddenberry off the hook either).
Again, I’m not surprised by the troubling views being expressed here, but in the case of Janice’s role within this story, it goes beyond what I can ignore. Barring that particular topic, I won’t deny the rest of the episode is otherwise somewhat entertaining, in a predominantly cringy sort of way. There are also some creative elements at play that would go on to become franchise staples, the most notable being ‘the transporter accident’ trope. I likely would have given this something closer to a 3 star rating if it didn’t take such a glib stance on sexual assault, but the excuse that this was a ‘product of it’s time’ doesn’t count towards a pass either.
1.5 stars (out of 5)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Parting Thoughts
Even a broken clock…: One thing I do agree with, is that fear is often the driving force behind anger. At one point, McCoy points out that while Good-Kirk is highly emotional and regularly distraught, he’s not ever overwhelmed by fear, conversely the Bad-Kirk regularly is. I suppose this is where I’ll admit that there is some credence behind the idea that if you simply remove one part of yourself, even a negative part, that it would likely impact the parts of you that are positive, to the extent that it may even change you fundamentally. What I disagree with is the idea that sexual desire is innately tied to compulsive behaviors beyond our control, at least insofar as it is depicted in this episode, written by a team of creatives that clearly held some inherently misogynistic biases.
Pacifist Vulcan Violence: In addition to transporter shenanigans, this episode also introduces us to the ‘Vulcan nerve pinch.’ The story goes that Leonard Nimoy felt brute force would be uncharacteristic of an advanced progressive anti-emotion society, and offered the now-famous nerve pinch as an alternative. I find it interesting, because the moment barely registers today, since that move is such a casually iconic staple of the franchise. But I can only imagine this would have been such a novel concept when it first aired, especially for younger viewers.
The unicorn-dog is dead, Jim: I believe this might also be the show’s first use (according to production order) of McCoy’s famous line, “He’s dead, Jim.” Fitting that it was for a dog, the universal best friend of humankind, be it horned or otherwise. Good boy unicorn-dog. Good boy.
Medical Binge Drinking: So, I guess McCoy has a liquor cabinet in sickbay. Immediately after Bad-Kirk emerges, he heads straight for sickbay and demands a drink. He even goes so far as to shake McCoy until he surrenders an entire bottle of booze, and then proceeds to chug it like a frat-boy on a bender, stumbling down a corridor. I realize drinking on the job was more socially acceptable in the 60’s, but it does seem odd that a doctor would have enough drinking alcohol to stock a small bar, for the purpose of serving it to patients. I guess the 23rd century is so progressive that my feeble 21st century mind just wouldn’t understand. Yeah, that must be it.

29th May, 1942. First flight of the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation Boomerang, an aircraft designed and built in just 16 weeks due to the urgent need for an indigenous Australian fighter aircraft. Hampered in this role by lack of performance, the Boomerang instead proved extremely capable in ground attack and target marking.
Pictured:
L) Newly completed Boomerang at the CAC airfield at Fisherman’s Bend, Melbourne. Well armed, manoeuvrable and rugged, the aircraft’s Achilles heel was its lack of speed, proving unable to catch Japanese aircraft. None were ever shot down by a Boomerang during its combat career.
📷 AWM 043180
R) Pilots and ground crew with a Boomerang of No.4 (Tactical Reconnaissance) Squadron RAAF at Nadzab, New Guinea. The type found its niche in an army co-operation role, where its ability to loiter at low speed over the battle area and absorb damage was valued. Boomerang pilots would either attack targets themselves, mark them for fighter-bombers or direct artillery strikes.

uni accessibility rant [indigenous version]
whenever profs say they wanna see me succeed or they care abt disabled students i rly wanna ask "do you want me to be cured so i can be the best student ever or do you wanna make exceptions every now and then so i can actually perform the knowledge we both know i have???"
like a few things that piss me off
profs (both white allies & natives) teaching about the importance of oral knowledge transmission / how colonial the system is YET saying "i'm sorry i can't do visual or oral-based assessment methods for you" EVEN THO THE RUBRIC IS THE SAME
profs teaching about generational trauma and the health effects of colonialism (mainly substance use disorder & FASD in my case) just to not be accessible or make exceptions because it's inconvenient for them personally,, despite the fact they get paid over 100k a year to teach this shit
"if you were struggling you should've reached out sooner" i have a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects communication bro IM TRYING MY BEST
my worst prof not taking accountability for the way her transphobia has made me feel and how it contributed to my mental health which affected my attendance
"if i do this for you, i have to do this for everyone else too" UNLESS EVERYONE HERE IS REGISTERED WITH THE ACCESSIBILITY PEOPLE THEN NO YOU FUCKING DONT ACTUALLY
it sucks so much cause even tho i'm good friends with the other disabled (similar stuff like adhd & autism) students i can't relate to them because of stuff like :
they have very low support needs compared to me (they can balance part time work & full time school, lack physical health problems, etc)
most don't even recognize themselves as disabled tbh
none of them have idiopathic hypersomnia and are genuinely shocked i'm capable of going to school when i say "researchers consider my condition to be the equivalent of an average person staying awake for 3 days straight, like that's my baseline level of feeling awake and i require another person to give me medication so i can stay awake"
most of their struggles in school seem to be based around comprehending the knowledge from class & organization, not performance-based or executive dysfunction-based (which our university has no idea how to support)
none of them have pathological demand avoidance
most get financial support from their band which makes life wayyy easier
some of them outright pay other people to do their assignments and/or use ai which i'm not rly comfortable doing
all of them can use stress/fear/anxiety/etc as a motivator to get shit done but that doesn't work on me anymore and just leads me to feel paralyzed (like if there's flight/fight/freeze/fawn, they're doing fight while i'm doing freeze
just wanna make it clear i'm not hating on my classmates !! i'm happy they can thrive in a system that wasn't designed for disabled ppl. as someone who isn't thriving i feel very dumb and misunderstood all the time (even amongst disabled peers) which is very frustrating/lonely !!
edit: idk how to explain this shit to people because whenever i talk about these problems, other people want to try to fix the problems (natural response imo), but i've already spents years on stuff like adhd medication, antidepressants, life coaching, peer-tutoring, peer-coaching, various forms of therapy, self-education, reading neurodivergent specific self-help books, using neurodivergent specific journalling prompts, etc.
at this point i feel very comfortable saying my issue is with the school system not allowing me to use the methods of assessment that are best for me, not my struggle to communicate or comprehend the world around me. when i attended an online school that was literally called "flex ed" because it was designed to be flexible to each individual student (in terms of asking for different methods & you could choose how long each course was), i was so happy and successful which is how i got the good grades to go on to study at a top university. i don't need other people to fix me, i need people to take me seriously when i talk about what's best for me

Tina Modotti, 1929 Mujer con Jicara en la cabeza (Woman with Jicara on her head)
Tumblr media
Like other artists and writers in Mexico, Modotti was influenced by Mexicanidad, which embraced native cultures and indigenous subjects as part of the larger renewal in Mexican art and culture in the 1920s. This interest is evident in Woman from Tehuantepec. One of Modotti’s most iconic images, it became a potent symbol of Mexicanidad and an exercise in photographic modernism. As Sarah Lowe has noted, “the image function[s] like still life, precisely because Modotti chose not just any woman, but a well-known Mexican type – the Tehuana – to photograph. As pictured by Modotti, these women of Tehuantepec were an ideal subject, and provided her with an already-given meaning since Tehuantepec is a matriarchal society, there women have a significant voice in the running of the local economy and politics. Modotti uses the Tehuana to make a powerful political point: that women were capable of independent political action.”--Karen Barber. “Tina Modotti Artist Overview and Analysis,” on The Art Story website 12 Nov 2018

Hi, I dont know if you would know anything about this. But can you tell me about mew. I've been told I look like it and I don't know anything/remember anything about it if I knew anything about it. I'm so sorry to disturb you but I'm low on options.
--Glow
(@glow-is-lost)
Hello. Do not apologize, Mewtwo happens to be one of my special interests! If you are unaware, Mewtwo was created as a more powerful clone of Mew. Tangentially, I know some about Mew!
Tumblr media
Mew is a Pokemon believed to a genetic ancestor to nearly every modern Pokemon. Very few species have been seen, some believe there is only one in existence. It is capable of learning a staggering variety of moves, including Transform.
It lives deep inside a jungle, though I can not remember where the jungle is located. It holds great importance there to the indigenous people, who hold many ceremonies in Mew's honor. They also have several songs which either act as prayers to Mew or epics about Mew. You can find recordings of these songs on Mewtube, ironically!
The hieroglyph above was carved by the indigenous people, and depicts Mew in beautiful detail. Mew is either- ah I can't remember- either pink or purple in coloration. I believe purple, since Mewtwo is lavender.
I hope this is a decent overview of Mew, let me know if you have any questions!

Airborne Optronics Market Fueled by Technological Innovation in Electro Optical and Infrared Sensors
The airborne optronics market is gaining significant traction across the global aerospace and defense sectors. Optronics, a combination of optics and electronics, plays a critical role in enhancing the operational capabilities of airborne platforms, such as military aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), helicopters, and commercial jets. The increasing demand for advanced surveillance, navigation, targeting, and communication systems is a primary driver behind the market's expansion.
Tumblr media
Airborne optronics systems consist of various subsystems, including electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors, laser rangefinders, targeting pods, helmet-mounted displays, and night vision systems. These technologies enable real-time situational awareness, precise target detection, and improved mission effectiveness under a wide range of environmental and operational conditions. As military operations become more dependent on precision and intelligence, the relevance of optronics continues to grow.
Key Market Drivers
One of the primary drivers of the airborne optronics market is the growing need for enhanced surveillance and reconnaissance. Modern warfare requires constant real-time intelligence, and EO/IR systems installed on aircraft are vital for this purpose. These systems provide high-resolution imagery, target tracking, and object identification, which are crucial for both combat and humanitarian missions.
Another major driver is the increasing focus on modernizing existing military aircraft fleets. Countries around the world are investing in upgrading older platforms with newer optronic systems to extend their operational lifespans and improve capabilities. For instance, retrofitting fighter jets and helicopters with new targeting pods or helmet-mounted cueing systems can significantly enhance mission performance.
In addition, the global rise in defense spending is accelerating investments in airborne optronics. As nations strengthen their air forces, there is a concurrent increase in the procurement of advanced optronic solutions that improve aircraft survivability and lethality. Emerging technologies like AI-enabled imaging and multispectral sensors are being incorporated into next-generation platforms, further pushing market growth.
Civil Aviation Applications
While defense remains the dominant segment, the adoption of optronics in civil aviation is also expanding. Commercial aircraft now incorporate vision-based systems for enhanced navigation, especially in low-visibility conditions. Enhanced Flight Vision Systems (EFVS), which use infrared cameras to improve runway visibility during takeoff and landing, are becoming more common in business and commercial aviation.
Furthermore, airborne optronics are being employed in environmental monitoring, border security, and search and rescue missions. Surveillance aircraft equipped with optronic sensors can detect forest fires, monitor coastal activities, and assist during disaster relief efforts by providing detailed imagery and terrain analysis.

RED FLAG Shenanigans Part 1
RED FLAG is a two-week exercise held several times a year at Nellis Air Force Base several miles northeast of Las Vegas. It’s an advanced air-to-air combat training event that “aims to offer realistic air-combat training for military pilots and other flight crew members from the United States and allied countries.” Since my first squadron, the VF-24 Renegades, obviously qualified for the event, we volunteered to go……twice….in two years. Multiple DACT events?? VEGAS??? Sign us up!
The following five vignettes are offered to explain how these kinds of events went for an early 90’s Tomcat squadron. They’re pulled from both of our visits there in 94/95 and are representative of each of them. The first one in 1994 we all got to stay in a Howard Johnsons near the airport (decent breakfast!) and for the second one we got to stay in a “No-Tell Motel” across the street from the city jail (syringes and hookers!). Life was good, as we’d all fly once a day and have some of the best Liberty imaginable in Sin City, USA. I’ll use vignette #1 to illustrate how fun that nightlife was (names and callsigns changed to protect the innocent).
Who’s Got the Spike Watch?
As you may imagine, cutting 28 Fighter Pilots and RIOs loose in Loss Vegas can be rather…..interesting. Per usual, we’d tend to travel in large packs (10-12 wasn’t unusual) and we’d roam the streets going to various casinos (“always bet on Renegade Red!!”), consuming the local food and beverage (shrimp cocktails and bourbon), and communicating with the indigenous peoples (showgirls).
We had a RIO in the squadron (“Spike”) that was from North Carolina, complete with heavy accent, that would on occasion imbibe just enough bourbon to cease conscious brain function but not quite enough to make his legs stop working. One fine evening, Spike was right there with us and then all the sudden he was not. Shit. We searched a bit but no joy, so ended up going back to the hotel to get some shut eye.
Morning arrives and Spike had returned sometime late in the evening. We’d heard he’d banged on some of the Sailors room doors while in his underwear and they eventually steered him to one of the Officer’s rooms. We’re all downstairs for breakfast just waiting for Spike to tell us what the hell happened. He didn’t remember, naturally. But he DID say “I have a pocket full of receipts, ATM withdrawal slips, and I can’t find my wedding ring.”
Uh-oh. So we lay out all the paperwork in chronological order. Apparently, he’d hooked up with some honey (not physically, just out partying) and they: withdrew $500 in cash for gambling, had a $140 dinner at a steak restaurant, and spent $600 at a handbag store. Oh, and he gave the girl his wedding ring. Skipper hears about this and he appoints us all as having the “Spike Watch” for the rest of the detachment. Spike was not happy but managed to stay married because his wife is a Saint.
Beating Up on Eagles
Our primary role is (again) Red Air, the bad guys, with very limited A/A missile capability and our job was to suck up Eagle AMRAAM and then get to a merge and have some fun. My favorite engagement occurred mid exercise. We were set up in the west of the working area in the low 20,000’s and the Eagles were in the east way up in the ionosphere in the high 30s, probably 60 miles away. At the “fights on”, we push east and descend a bit to try and pull them out of the high block. They didn’t bite.
At about 40 miles we can see them waaaaaay up there; a wall of eight Eagles each with a contrail. Now normally, if you’re emitting contrails (“marking”) you want to get out of that block because the bad guys can see you. But a wall of EIGHT Eagles at 38K’ with 4+ AMRAAM each is pretty formidable so at that point, they have an “I don’t care if you can see me, you’re going to die” advantage. Sure enough, the whole wall of eight turns 45° to the south; they’d sorted and shot missiles at all of us hapless Red Air missile sponges. After 30 seconds or so, “Timeout kill; all Red Air is dead.”
With that part out of the way, the “continue” call comes and now we roll up our sleeves for some turning and burning. The Eagles know we’re not coming up there so they come down to meet us. Perfect. Their wing is optimized for the thin air; the Tomcat swing wing is optimized for the thicker air below 20K’. We’d all broken up and were now raging singes, and I get radar on an Eagle that’s headed right at me. We’re all the way north and clear of the rest of the jets, so it’s just me and him mano a mano.
We close, and then we’re visual, and it looks to be a left-to-left pass. I’m at my best corner speed (320 kts) because I know that down here our degrees of turn per second is pretty close but he has a slight advantage. I need to find a way to get some angles and I hit upon a pretty basic intimidation move as we’re about to merge. Normally at an ACM merge, you pass wingtip to wingtip at 500 feet separation and when you pass, you start your turn, either into him (2 circle) or away from him (1 circle). My plan is for a 2 circle fight to maximize my turn rate. But what I DON’T do is wait until our wingtips pass to start my turn.
I wait until we nearly merged, throw the stick hard left with some rudder while I’m at his left 11 o’clock and put a BIG OL’ TOMCAT right in his face, like I’m early turning him. All he sees is this aluminum overcast right in front of his jet, seeming to be digging for a turn before even passing. Our jets then actually pass and I snap on 6.5 Gs and max perform the Tomcat across his tails and nose low. And my gambit works. As I visually acquire him in a couple seconds, he hadn’t started turning….and THEN he snaps on his best turn. But it’s too late. I’ve already got 20° or more on him, I’m below the horizon, and in 2 circle flow it’s just a matter of time. I pull harder to to scoop the turn out across the circle and get into a firing position pretty quickly. Worked out real nice for me on that one. Naturally, there were other merges that didn’t. In the debrief we met up and chatted and he was a newer Eagle pilot and said “I’ve never seen a jet that big move like that.”
BUFF Too Tough
At one point, we had a B-52 show up. Affectionately known as the BUFF (Big Ugly Fat F**ker), she’s a remarkable platform and it was an honor to see one in flight. On one particular run, she was making her way across the area up in the ionosphere with the Eagles there to protect. We all REALLY wanted to bag a BUFF as it would be huge bragging rights. Our division of Red Air starts this particular run and with four Eagles/one Buff in the East, we turn in and head for ‘em. Our plan is to break up into four raging singles about 40 miles and dive for the deck and hope to ingress get under the Eagles and behind the BUFF and do our best to cornhole her from behind.
Things are working pretty good, but the Eagles have a GREAT system and they managed to bag 3 of us. But not me, luckily. I’m in the weeds in the high desert roving through a valley and my RIO is doing his best to get his radar up and on the BUFF. Sure enough, there she is at 4 miles in the medium 30’s. Now, remember I’ve related before that the F-14A with the TF-30s didn’t do so well above 30K’ (as in “could barely get there”), so I know we wouldn’t have much time for the shot, basically making a stern conversion in the vertical. So we light the cans, accelerate to ludicrous speed and start a climbing 50° nose up slight turn to the right.
Once we’re visual, it’s just a matter of timing your turn and climb to arrive in a firing solution at the BUFF’s 5 o’clock position and start blastin’ away. That’s the plan anyway. What ACTUALLY happens is this. We’re about 3 miles at her 5 o’clock, the heart of the envelope for the stern quarter Sparrow shot, and my RIO tries to get a radar lock. I see the diamond/symbology bounce around, feel the antenna thumping at my feet and SCHWACK the radar antenna hits the stops hard low and right. RIO tries again, same result. At this point, I figured out that a jet as big as the BUFF must have a jammer suite as big as a tractor trailer. Sure enough, no WAY we’re going to get a radar missile on her. Fair enough, switch Sidewinder (heat seeker). I didn’t know if I had enough ‘Winders to bring down a BUFF (two 20-pound warheads against a 200,000 pound jet), but I’d give it a try.
‘Winder up, good seeker symbology, try and maneuver to get the seeker on one of the motors…..and….remember when I said we didn’t do well up above 30K? Well, controls are getting mushy and if I put any kind of pull on the jet I’d probably stall one of the motors, and I’m getting slower a little at a time. I keep fishing for a bit but the seeker didn’t want to give me a good lock. A couple growls, but no tone. Dammit. No way guns were going to work in this scenario, so discretion being the better part of valor……let the nose drop, abandon my one shot at a BUFF, and on the descent shake my fist while screaming at the sky “Curses!! A curse on you, BUFF!!!!”
This is part one of "Red Flag Shenanigans". Tune in next week when we finish the series with "Mirage 2000, Dammit" and "Area 51 is Real."

What is a Cryostat?
A cryostat is a device engineered to sustain cryogenic temperatures, typically ranging from -150°C (-238°F) down to absolute zero (-273°C or -460°F). These ultra-low temperatures are crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of samples, facilitating detailed microscopic analysis without degradation. The term "cryostat" derives from the Greek words "kryos" (cold) and "stat" (stable), emphasizing its role in providing a stable cold environment.
Key Features of Cryostats
Temperature Control: Cryostats achieve and maintain specific low temperatures using refrigeration methods such as liquid nitrogen or helium. Precise temperature control is vital for experiments requiring stable conditions.
Insulated Chamber: Typically, cryostats feature a vacuum-insulated chamber that minimizes thermal exchange with the environment, ensuring consistent internal temperatures.
Microtome Integration: Many cryostats incorporate a microtome, allowing users to slice samples into thin sections for microscopic examination—a feature particularly important in histopathology.
Safety Mechanisms: Modern cryostats are equipped with safety features such as alarms and automatic shut-off systems to prevent overheating or mechanical failures.
Applications of Cryostats
Cryostats serve a multitude of purposes across various sectors:
Medical Applications
In pathology labs, cryostats are used to rapidly freeze tissue samples for examination. This rapid freezing preserves cellular structures, facilitating accurate diagnoses of diseases like cancer through histological analysis.
Scientific Research
Cryostats are essential in scientific research for studying materials at low temperatures. Fields such as molecular biology and materials science rely on cryostats to understand substance properties under cryogenic conditions, leading to significant breakthroughs.
Industrial Applications
In industries like semiconductor manufacturing, cryostats play a crucial role where precise temperature control is necessary to ensure product quality.
Types of Cryostats
Various types of cryostats are available, each suited for specific applications:
Closed-Cycle Cryostats
These systems use helium vapor and an external refrigerator to cool samples without the need for frequent refills of cryogenic fluids. They can operate continuously but require significant electrical power.
Bath Cryostats
Utilizing a bath of liquid helium or nitrogen, these cryostats cool samples directly. While they need periodic replenishment of the cryogen, they are simpler in design and operation.
Flow Cryostats
Employing a continuous flow of coolant, flow cryostats maintain low temperatures and are often used in applications requiring constant cooling over extended periods.
Cryogen-Free Cryostats
These advanced systems use mechanical coolers instead of liquid cryogens, offering convenience by eliminating the need for refilling while providing stable low temperatures.
INOXCVA's Contribution to Cryostat Technology
In April 2023, INOXCVA achieved a significant milestone by fabricating India's first indigenously designed zero-boil-off 4K helium cryostat for a whole-body 1.5T superconducting MRI magnet system. This development is expected to reduce MRI costs and enhance healthcare accessibility in India. The project was a collaborative effort among various Indian institutions, positioning India as the sixth country globally capable of manufacturing MRI magnet systems.
Conclusion
Understanding cryostats reveals their critical role across various sectors, from healthcare to industrial applications. Advancements in technology have led to more efficient designs like closed-cycle and cryogen-free systems, expanding the utility of cryostats. Companies like INOXCVA are at the forefront of this evolution, providing essential equipment that supports scientific research and industrial processes worldwide. As we move towards a future focused on sustainability and innovation, the importance of cryogenic technology will only increase.

What If the Min Min Lights Are Alien Probes 2025
Tumblr media
What If the Min Min Lights Are Alien Probes 2025
For centuries, mysterious glowing orbs known as the Min Min lights have puzzled travelers in the Australian outback. These ethereal lights appear to hover, chase, or vanish without explanation. Scientists and skeptics have offered various rational theories—from natural gases to optical illusions—but many continue to believe there's something more enigmatic at play. Now, let’s ask the ultimate speculative question: What if the Min Min lights aren’t just natural phenomena, but are actually alien probes? This hypothesis combines mythology, modern UFO lore, and speculative science to reframe one of Australia’s most enduring mysteries. A Quick Recap: What Are the Min Min Lights? The Min Min lights are named after a small outback settlement in Queensland, Australia. First reported by stockmen in the early 20th century, these mysterious lights are typically described as: - Glowing orbs, often white, yellow, or green. - Hovering just above the ground or following travelers. - Disappearing suddenly or staying visible for extended periods. Sightings are so consistent that many locals consider them a regular part of life. They are most commonly seen in the Channel Country—a vast, remote desert landscape. The Alien Probe Hypothesis: Why It’s Not That Far-Fetched Now let’s turn the lens toward a bolder explanation: What if these lights are advanced surveillance devices sent by an extraterrestrial civilization? Here’s why this theory could hold some speculative weight: 1. Persistent but Elusive Behavior Unlike random natural events, the Min Min lights seem to exhibit pattern-based behaviors. Witnesses often report being "followed" by the lights for hours. They keep a consistent distance, avoid direct contact, and vanish when approached. This behavior aligns more with drone-like intelligence than with something like swamp gas or atmospheric reflection. If we imagined them as alien probes, their actions make more sense: surveillance without interference. 2. Remote and Uninhabited Territory Why would alien probes choose Australia’s outback? The same reason humans place observatories in remote places—low human activity means lower chances of interference. The vast, flat desert offers the perfect low-noise environment to monitor Earth's ecosystems, atmosphere, or even our behavior in isolation. Also, the desolation of the Australian interior makes it easier for strange phenomena to go unnoticed or be dismissed. 3. Advanced Technology Camouflage These orbs of light may not be just lights but intelligent machines with the ability to: - Bend light (for invisibility or redirection) - Emit plasma-based glow (for communication or propulsion) - Use anti-gravity technology (to hover and maneuver effortlessly) Such capabilities are consistent with what science fiction and some theoretical physics suggest could be possible in advanced extraterrestrial tech. Could They Be Autonomous AI Explorers? Another idea worth considering is that the Min Min lights are not manned spacecraft but AI-powered, self-replicating probes—similar to the concept of von Neumann probes. These are theoretical machines capable of self-replication and long-term exploration without the need for return to origin. If aliens wanted to explore the galaxy, they might not send themselves but machines that could investigate environments silently, record data, and send it back via quantum communication. This fits neatly with the Min Min lights' passive and mysterious nature. Cultural Interpretation vs. Technological Reality Indigenous Australian cultures have long included tales of strange lights and spirits in the outback. While these stories carry spiritual and symbolic meanings, they may also hold clues to real phenomena passed down through oral traditions. Just as some ancient myths around the world have been reinterpreted as references to astronomical events or cosmic interactions, it's possible the Min Min lights have always been more than myth. Could ancient encounters have been early sightings of these alien surveillance devices?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why Haven’t We Found Physical Evidence? Skeptics will quickly ask: if the Min Min lights are probes, why haven’t we captured one? There are a few speculative answers: - Advanced cloaking or self-destruction mechanisms prevent retrieval. - Their material composition is non-terrestrial and does not leave behind standard traces. - We haven’t been looking hard enough, or in the right way, due to the remote locations. Additionally, the lights may be operating on intervals—appearing only under specific atmospheric or energy conditions. What Are the Implications? If this hypothesis were true, and Min Min lights are indeed alien probes, it would open a new chapter in our understanding of contact: - We’d be under silent observation by an intelligence that’s studying us without our consent. - It might suggest that Earth is being visited more often than we assume, just through non-obvious means. - It would challenge governments and scientific institutions to rethink the scope and seriousness of unexplained aerial phenomena. It also raises the possibility that such probes exist elsewhere across the planet—camouflaged as folklore, dismissed as illusions, or mistaken for natural events. A Cautious but Open Mindset Of course, it’s important to distinguish between imaginative speculation and empirical science. As of now, there is no confirmed physical evidence that the Min Min lights are of alien origin. Many researchers point to: - Fata Morgana (mirage-like optical illusions) - Bioluminescent gases - Car headlights refracted through temperature layers These are scientifically grounded explanations, but none fully account for the intelligent movement patterns or emotional reactions many witnesses describe. So, What If? If the Min Min lights really are alien probes, they represent a form of contact—one that is silent, long-term, and non-invasive. It suggests a species advanced enough to watch but wise enough not to interfere. Perhaps the answer lies in a middle ground: a phenomenon that is partly natural but occasionally manipulated by something not of this Earth. After all, as Arthur C. Clarke said, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
