The Witch’s Lens by Luanne G. Smith
Smith returns to the source of modern vampire myths, creating a supernatural thriller that offers a rich world and characters rather than relying on subtle differences from other modern horror and urban fantasy for its charm. Continue reading The Witch’s Lens by Luanne G. Smith

Chaos and order rested on two sides of a sharp edge, but so did pain and pleasure. Harmony and discord. There was not one without the other. Always the dance of tension. One could choose which side to lean into if or when the blade tipped off-center.

Weird & Wonderful Wednesday
Tumblr media
Okay, so we’ll title this week, ‘unintentional early 1900s week’. Oops…
This book takes place around the great war though, not the Jazz age, 1917, 1918, and it was intense. Laura was a field nurse until she was discharged because she was wounded. She goes home, and, then, she gets a message that says that her brother Freddie has been killed, except, maybe she hasn’t. So, she goes back to Belgium and seeks to find her brother. Meanwhile, Freddie is going through his own thing that not just involves an interesting alliance with a German, and a mysterious man who maybe has some weird supernatural sort of power?
The story was told from both siblings’ points of view as Laura tries to find Freddie and Freddie goes through his ordeal, trying to make it back to the world and to Laura too. As I said, it was intense, and such a different look at the issues that were present during, after, and around the First World War.
You may like this book If you Liked: The London Séance Society by Sarah Penner, The Haunting of H. G. Wells by Robert Masello, or The Witch's Lens by Luanne G. Smith

Book ask: 1, 10, 17, 25
1, How many books did you read this year? ...That depends. As for the act of reading a book, I started and finished 62 books so far (and I expect to finish at least like 5 more). If we count individual books... a little over 50? Because I read every book I translate at least twice (once to translate, and another time to proofread the translation).
10, What was your favorite new release of the year? Rebecca Ross: Divine Rivals, no question. ...Okay, apparently The Agency for Scandal came out in early January, so that's a very close second.
17, Did any books surprise you with how good they were? Luanne G. Smith: The Vine Witch. I was a little skeptical about it at first, and I almost DNF'd it after the first chapter (because the main character was a toad in the first chapter, I hate toads, and that chapter gave me a visceral reaction), but then it became absolutely intriguing and I found myself loving the worldbuilding. Ashley Polston: Bishop Takes King. So this is a YA book about Kate Bishop with other Marvel heroes cameoing, and look: I've read a bunch of Marvel novels, and most of them are middling at best. So my expectations going in were... modest. But damn, this was great. Okay, so the conflict was a bit convoluted, but the writing was great, the author really got the characters, it was absolutely witty, and she was also good at the action scenes! Absolutely recommend. B.B. Alston: Amari and the Night Brothers/and the Great Game. I wouldn't have read those if I hadn't been contracted to translate the latter, but they were just an absolute delight. Katharine McGee: American Royals. I expected total ditzy, then it had a surprising depth.
25, What reading goals do you have for the next year? I haven't decided yet :'D

The Conspiracy of Magic- Review
I recently finished Luanne G. Smith’s series The Conspiracy of Magic, a two-book series,” The Raven Spell” and “The Raven Song.” If you have been following this blog for a while, you know I have mixed feelings about Smith’s protagonist. I either love the Protagonist (Sidra, Yvette), or I find the protagonist frustrating (Elena). This book series shows Smith’s character development and historical…

I'm proud of what I was able to accomplish over the last few days. I've been having a rough time mentally lately and it led to a breakdown Monday. All through the day I just didn't feel ok. But after it was done it felt like a weight lifted off of me and was able to host a co-working sessions on Tuesday where I got so much done. And then today was a little slower for some health reasons but I still managed to get stuff done and that is a win in my book. Sometimes you need to have the breakdown to be able to move past it.
Productivity (2 days)
Hosted a co-working session for 7 hours.
Write a book review for my March read.
Edited that book review.
Made graphics for that book review for Instagram.
Took pictures for the book review.
Posted the book review on Twitter, Instagram, and my blog.
Made some new icons for my stream deck.
Worked on a little poetry for the first time in a while.
Self Care
Did an in depth skincare routine
Took a nap when I needed it
Made myself my favorite breakfast sandwich
If you'd like to ready review, you can find it here, as well as follow my other socials that I mentioned earlier through the link in my bio

The Raven Spell by Luanne G. Smith | #BookReview #Thriller #Fantasy #SerialKiller
I reviewed The Raven Spell by Luanne G. Smith today on my blog. It's a perfect October read! #BookReview #Thriller #Fantasy #SerialKiller
In Victorian England a witch and a detective are on the hunt for a serial killer in an enthralling novel of magic and murder by the Amazon Charts and Washington Post bestselling author of The Vine Witch. After a nearly fatal blow to the skull, traumatized private detective Ian Cameron is found dazed and confused on a muddy riverbank in Victorian London. Among his effects: a bloodstained business…
