The Target - Lucaya AU Part One
Hey, it’s Maya back with another AU! So, this is going to have (I think) 2 or 3 parts to this au, and basically it’s about Lucas and Maya being enemies from different organizations. Lucas is hired to hunt Maya down, gain her trust, and turn her over to his bosses, who plan to kill her. But will Lucas fall for Maya? And if so, this is a dangerous- and deadly- flaw in his master plan, and his fate, as well as Maya’s could hang in the balance.

I remembered what my job was. Hunting down Maya Hart was just part of it. To earn this money- my payment- I had to turn her over.
I spotted her, the new girl, the target of my interest for the past two months, and a malicious smile lifted one corner of my mouth as she flipped her blonde hair over one shoulder.
“Hart!” I called, and she looked up. Seeing it was me, she rolled her eyes.
But because I was supposed to memorize every little thing about her, I saw the tiny smile playing on her lips.
I remembered how at the beginning of the school year, when she had first stepped foot into this territory, my territory, how she had absolutely hated me.
And how, bit by bit, I had lured her closer and closer until I was sure I had her in reach.
There were times when I felt this surge of affection for her, this streak of actually- dare I say it?- having romantic feelings for her.
But that was the number one thing about this task I could not do; and that was fall for the girl that was my target. The girl that was my enemy.
“Hey princess,” The nickname I had so mercilessly teased and infuriated her with since the beginning of the year rolled off my tongue, and she glared at me.
“You coming tonight?” I said in my easy tone, as casual as anything, and she raised an eyebrow.
“Just you and me?”
“Just us.” I confirmed, and I saw the tiniest pink rise to her cheeks, but it was gone as she regained her composure, almost as smooth as me.
“What, like a date?”
“We’re not going out.” I said, and for an instant, I found myself regretting the words, and immediately after I shoved the thought from my mind, I saw the tiniest flicker of hurt behind her eyes.
Like I said, learn everything about your victim.
“Right.” She said it like, duh, but I could tell she was putting on a face, on a mask.
“See you at seven, M.” I grinned, and she slammed her locker shut.
“If you’re lucky, Friar.”
After I was sure she was gone, I sent off a text to Marshall and the rest of them:
Plan’s in action. She’s coming tonight; campfire, @ 7.
Barely 30 seconds later, Marshall replied back.
Perfect.
“I’m serious!”
Maya was laughing so hard I was sure she was going to pass out, leaning onto my shoulder for support.
“You helped give birth to a horse!?”
I shook my head, regretting even telling her. “Shut up!”
She gasped for breath, and sat up, wiping her eyes.  “Wow, Lucas.”
My eyebrows drew together as she finally stopped laughing, and she glanced at me.
“What?”
“You….” I coughed, trying to compose myself. “You, uh- you just said my name.”
She stared at me, the only sound coming from the crackling of the fire, and then looked away, running a hand through her hair.
“Yeah. Yeah, I-I guess I did.”
“Maya.” I said slowly, knowing now was as good a time as ever. “I need to tell you something.”
She took a deep shaky breath and then slowly let it out.
Then, before I had any idea what was happening, she stood up so fast it was a blur, and turned her back on me. “No. Lucas, no. Don’t.”
I stood, confused. “What are you talking about?”
“You know perfectly well what I’m fucking talking about!” She spit, rubbing her face with her hands.
My eyebrows narrowed, and she barreled on. “You know what my parents are apart of, and you are my enemy. The enemy!”
She was talking so fast, it was hard to see how she could even string words together, and as she kept talking and talking, I interrupted her.
“What if I don’t care!? Maya, what if I’m in love with you!?” I yelled, and she stopped completely, all the blood draining from her face.
She stood, stunned. “What?”
I crossed towards her, not ever being so sure of anything in my entire life, and whispered, “Hold still.”
Then, I leaned in and pressed my lips to hers. And we were kissing, and I felt fireworks explode in my mind, making me dizzy from the effect.
My hands were tangled in her golden hair, and then she pulled away, both of us breathless. I felt my lips tingling from the aftermath, and I just wanted to keep kissing her.
Then, my phone rang, breaking the silence, and I tugged it out of my pocket, answering it.
“Friar!” Marshall’s voice boomed out, and my eyes widened. “We’re around back. Travers is about a minute away. Do you have the girl?”
I felt the word ‘yes’ come out of my mouth, and Marshall chuckled. “Excellent. See you in a minute.”
He hung up, and I slowly lowered my hand, and met Maya’s eyes.
“You sold me out.” She said flatly, disbelievingly, and the words hung in the air before I answered.
“All’s fair in love and war, princess.”
Maya’s voice was barely audible, and she choked out, “You said you loved me. Was that even true?”
I opened my mouth to speak, and then closed it. I had no idea.
Before we could say anything else, someone came out of the darkness and shoved Maya to the ground, pinning her arms behind her back.
“Friar.” Travers greeted me, and I managed a curt nod back, not bearing to look at Maya, my Blonde Beauty.
Maya struggled in Travers’s strong grip, and he growled, “Stop fighting, bitch, or it’s going to be a lot worse.”
Maya went limp, and looked up at me desperately. I could see a tear making it’s way down her face, and I turned away. I couldn’t watch.
“Marshall’s really proud.” Travers said as he yanked Maya in front, pushing her along the crude path through the trees. “You’ll probably get a promotion for catching this piece of filth.”
I resisted the urge to punch him, and bit my lip so angrily I drew blood.
“Yeah.” It was hard to keep the bitterness out of my tone, and I wanted to reach out and hug Maya, hold her. But this was my job.
And as I had said to Maya, all’s fair in love and war.
Wasn’t it?

Riley Matthews was not his friend.
She really wasn’t.
Because Farkle Minkus could never be friends with someone like her.
She was just so fucking entitled, with her decent looks, social easy, and (admittedly) impressive intelligence, not to mention that having her father as one of their teachers did her attitude no favors either.
And that waltz she always seemed to have? The inherent skip in her step? It made his skin crawl.
Or rather, it usually did…
She was also astoundingly naive and so damn idealistic. No one had disillusioned her yet, explained to her that people actually weren’t always born good and sometimes bad shit just happens to people who don’t deserve it. Speaking to her was like talking to a child and Farkle didn’t have the patience for it. 
Growing up in his household, patience was definitely not a virtue.
Yet, he supposed that she wasn’t exactly his enemy anymore.
Something had changed in the last few weeks and even in his infinite stubbornness, Farkle had to admit that he might not exactly hate Riley Matthews anymore. No, he didn’t really mind her most of the time nowadays… Possibly even liked her a little bit here and there.
So, Riley Matthews was not his friend. But she wasn’t his enemy, either. She was something else. Something on the tip of Farkle’s tongue that he couldn’t quite recall but also wasn’t entirely sure he wanted to dwell on long enough to come up with it.
Not that it was a big deal or anything.
Because it wasn’t.
It was Riley fucking Matthews and Farkle could never be friends with someone like her.
That was what was running through Farkle Minkus’ mind, at least, as his gaze followed the subject in question as she crossed the cafeteria with Maya Hart by her side.
“Pretty girl, huh?” Lucas spoke up, elbowing him in the ribs as he also watched the girls take their seats.
Farkle dropped his eyes to the apple in his hand. No way in hell was he going to eat it; it was practically mush, but he didn’t like his best friend’s gloating tone.
He rolled his eyes, “Is that all you see when you look at a girl? How pretty she is?”
Zay, sitting across from the duo, had turned incredibly conspicuously in his chair to see what the fuss was. “Uh, if I’m looking at Maya Hart? Yeah, man.” He took a bite of his own mushy apple, “She’s hot.”
“What else am I exactly supposed to look at? I don’t really know Maya.” Lucas countered, gearing up for a good, old fashion, Minkus-Friar debate.
“First of all, Maya Hart? Wasn’t looking at her.” Farkle shook his head and leaned back in his seat.
“And next, you don’t need to know someone personally to learn about them. Scientists observe.” He repeated, Lucas and Zay echoing along to the last sentence in annoyance from the number of times they’d heard it before.
Farkle pressed on, regardless. “They watch patterns, monitor behaviors, track consistencies. You see a hot blonde but I see someone who never leaves the side of her closest companion, who probably has a harder home life because she always takes extra at lunch, and who fails almost every written test but can answer most questions in a classroom discussion.”
“So basically, she’s loyal, little cynical, and averagely smart.” Sitting up with an eyebrow quirked in triumph, Farkle drummed his apple on the tabletop, “Lastly, and again, Maya Hart?”
“You know what?” Lucas challenged, trying to sound annoyed but the effect was lost to the amusement clear in his expression. “Fuck you, Farkle. Fuck you on two counts because seriously, how do you do that? And also because Maya Hart is hot, even you can’t deny that.”
Farkle chuckled, leaning over the table a bit with a casual shrug, “She’s okay.”
“Wait, wait, wait!” Zay threw a hand up, “If you weren’t staring at Maya Hart than who-“
Again the boy spun in his chair and Farkle inwardly groaned, slouching back into his seat. He crossed his arms over his chest and tried to ignore the way the tips of his ears were warming. Why would he be blushing? He had nothing to be embarrassed by.
Zay whirled back round, mouth agape and uneaten apple in plain sight. Charming. Really. 
“Wiley Maffhews?!” He exclaimed through the food.
Lucas cocked his head to the side, taking in the girl beside the ‘blonde beauty’, before turning to a glaring Farkle. “But you hate her?”
“Yeah, every time you see her, you start muttering about pie?” Zay suppled after swallowing.
“Pi.” Farkle corrected, instinctually, before hardening his gaze and giving both his friends scathing looks. “And I’m perfectly aware of how I feel about Riley Matthews, thanks.” He sighed, “She’s my chemistry partner, that’s all. And she may be getting to me… But just a bit!”
“Damn, you must really hate her. Usually you don’t admit when things bug you.” Lucas lightly punched Farkle’s shoulder, glancing between his friend and the brunette giggling across the cafeteria.
Zay nodded, “Yeah, you’re just an asshole about it.”
“Why am I friends with you guys, again?” The genius asked, eyeing both boys.
“See?” Zay gestured to Farkle’s whole being, “Like that!”

Okay, did she really have to sound so excited to see him? It’s still just fucking chemistry. Farkle wondered even as something warm blossomed in his chest.
It has been a bad idea to talk to Riley about his parents, he had concluded the day after he’d done so. It was like she thought they had some connection now or something. He’d just been trying to prevent her from meddling in his life, not make her think they were somehow closer than before.
Because they weren’t.
“Guess what?” Riley asked, turning on her stool to face him.
Oh, and they were doing that thing now? Well okay…
“What?” Farkle answered to placate her, keeping his head down and flipping needlessly through his notebook.
Whatever hints he was trying to drop, honestly he wasn’t even sure, Riley definitely did not pick up on them. Her grin only seemed to widen, if possible, as she reached out and rested a hand on his shoulder.
Her grip was tight with enthusiasm and odd but not entirely unwelcome. Pin pricks seemed to rise up on his skin through the sleeve of his t-shirt under the pressure. His gaze came up to rest on her perfectly manicured fingertips, eyebrows drawn in confusion as she rambled on.
“Last night I got an email from Columbia confirming my enrollment! I am officially going to be a student at Columbia University in the fall!” She practically squealed at the end, those manicure nails digging into his arm.
Farkle rolled his eyes, biting back the smile trying to fight its way on to his face, “That’s generally what confirming an enrollment means, Matthews.”
“I know that, silly! I’m just so excited!” Riley snatched her hand back to clap and bounce in her seat. Without permission, a light chuckle slipped past Farkle’s lips as he watched her, practically feeling the excitement radiating from her.
God, she’s adorable.
Wait, what? No! No, she was not. Absolutely not!
Dropping his smile, Farkle turned back to glare at his own wiry handwriting sprawled across the pages of his notebook. As if those were the thoughts that offended him and not the ones still locked in his brain.
“I’m just shocked you managed at Ivy League, Matthews. I always pegged you for a community college or maybe NYU.” He grumbled.
Riley stopped bouncing, hands still raised mid-clap. Her grin, always so infectious and genuine, slipped away to be replaced by a much less contagious but equally genuine look of hurt. 
Slowly, she folded her hands in her lap and turned back to the front of the class right as Mr. Hudson came cruising into the room.
Farkle finally started to relax with her big, brown eyes off him when he heard her hiss, “You are such an asshole.”
“So I’ve been told.” He countered, remaining expressionless.
The reply easily rolled off his tongue, but the guilt continued to roll around in his gut long after chemistry. The hurt on Riley’s face didn’t settle on his shoulder quite the way it normally did. There wasn’t any satisfaction in raining on her parade anymore…
Maybe she really was getting to him.
Farkle thumbed through his copy of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks as the subway soared through the underground. Music played in the background of his mind from the earbuds he’d popped in after leaving Abigail Adams. Unfortunately, he couldn’t seem to focus on the lyrics anymore than he could the words on the pages.
His eyes burned from tiredness but he’d already found that no amount of blinking would do him any good. This was a weariness deep within his bones. An exhaustion that took time to cultivate, layering and layering until it fit like a second skin.
Calling it quits, he hastily dog-eared the page he’d been on, earning a glare from the bookish girl a few seats down, and shoved the novel back into his bag.
Crossing his arms over his chest, he laid his head back against the cool glass of the window. Light flickered sporadically throughout the cart as the train barreled through the tunnel and Farkle fought to keep his eyes open and his mind awake. Falling asleep on the subway was a basic no-no to any New Yorker, but he was just so tired.
The cell phone in his pocket felt heavier than usual, it’s weight on his leg like a brick. The text he’d gotten as he boarded the subway had equal weight on his mind.
From Stuart Minkus: Your mother will be here when you get home. We’re having a family dinner. Play nice.
Play nice? What the hell did that even mean? 
Farkle wondered and drummed his thumb against his thigh. It wasn’t like he was ever not nice to his mother. He wasn’t even disrespectful, in his own opinion, that just wasn’t how she saw things.
Since the day he’d been born, Farkle had been Stuart Minkus’ son.
Not just biologically, because obviously, but in identity. Sure, his name was ridiculous but he wore it proudly because he shared it with his father, the man who’d built an empire.
His father was someone important who did important things. It was one of the first facts that Farkle knew with complete certainty, even when he was just a toddler teetering around the top floors of Minkus International. 
Sure, his father was almost always absence in his life but that came with being so important. Stuart had things to do, people to see.
Still, Farkle had spent most nights of his childhood staying up until dawn just to say a quick hello. Just to get a glance of what it was that his father gave everything to.
There was a need to please ingrained deep in his system, to earn his father’s approval.
That was not the case with Jennifer and it never had been.
Farkle had a running theory that his mother viewed him as a black hole. Before he was even eight, Farkle had learned that Everything, Farkle! You just ruin everything! and he’d learn it from his mother.
Apparently, she’d been a country club, homecoming queen with a trust fund and bright future all before she’d gotten knocked up on the second date — not that his parents would ever admit that but he could do the basic math of their September wedding and his April arrival.
He’d put the rest of the story together on his own over the years.
Barely ten minutes after the pregnancy test turned positive mom had been disowned by her family and frantically tacking ‘Minkus’ onto her last name with a precious, little parasite multiplying its cells in her uterus… Or at least that’s how she’d put it to one of her housewife friends one afternoon when she’d been drinking wine from a box and forgotten Farkle was coming home early from school to see the ophthalmologist.
Basically, Jennifer Bassett had been a massive star and the birth of her son marked the end of her life cycle. He was the black hole formed from her collapse. His existence had taken not only her life from her, but her potential, her opportunities, the very light in her soul. He’d absorbed them and destroyed them just like a black hole.
Farkle figured that was why the woman seemed to avoid him like the plague and treated him with nothing but resentment when she was around. Maybe she loved him, maybe she didn’t, these days Farkle couldn’t bring himself to care either way.
Love had never been something he’d craved anyway.
It was an illogical fallacy, after all. An unproven hypothesis for those too desperately lonely to be left to their own devices when facing the bleakness of life head on.
Fuck, he was so tired he was getting poetic. Never a good sign.
And he’d closed the door on his mommy and daddy issues long ago, so why was he dwelling on them again now all of the sudden? On the subway, of all places?
Probably because Riley fucking Matthews had come along and knocked on that damn door.
Farkle sat up straight and ran a hand down his face.
Whatever. It didn’t matter, he was going to have to face dinner with his parents either way. Awkward, suffocating, it was like playing a role he knew his mother and father preferred. It was easier having a successful, bright son after all than living in the gravitational pull of a black hole.
It was even worse than Farkle had thought it would be. And that was saying something.
The teenager threw himself down into his bed, groaning as he slowly relaxed. His whole body had been tense for the last hour and a half and even the relief ached. He reached up, tugging at his hair and thinking back over the events of the so-called ‘family dinner’.
It hadn’t been a family dinner, first of all.
Farkle had been bombarded by his father from the moment he’d stepped out of their private elevator and apparently Marty and Helen Coleman were having dinner with them. He’d barely suppressed an eye roll at the news because the Coleman’s were even more insufferable than Riley Matthews on a good day.
They were old Princeton friends of his father’s and Marty was on the board of admissions still. Farkle had been pulled aside by his father the first day he met Marty and told that 'they could use the leg up’ to get him accepted.
It had stung that his father didn’t think he could get into Princeton on merit and capability alone, that he thought Farkle needed connections and favors. But Farkle always did as his father told him. Even if it meant playing nice with a corporate asshole like Marty Coleman and his stuck-up wife.
As they sat to talk about Farkle’s 'promising future’, the boy took note that his mother was nowhere in sight. A part of him sighed in relief while a smaller piece twitched in annoyance. Wasn’t the point of the dinner that, for once, both she and Stuart were home?
Luckily however, Jennifer Bassett Minkus appeared just in time for the merlot. A small detail which didn’t really surprise her husband or son and went unnoticed by their guests. She easily fell into her well-rehearsed role of loving wife and doting mother, holding Stuart’s hand and even reaching over once to ruffle Farkle’s hair.
“Our baby boy sure is exceptional.” She grinned with teeth as white as her lies.
Farkle bit his cheek and faked a smile to the table top, playing with his hands. The tremble from his irritation was barely noticeable, he noted with sarcastic pride.
Helen laughed, one of those big ones that just came off as practiced. “Well, with such great influences, how could he not be?”
Ah, irony.
Farkle and irony were old buddies.
“So, Farkle, you still set on Princeton next fall?” Marty questioned, pushing the broccoli around his plate. Had Farkle tried to have pulled that, he’d have been snapped at to stop playing with his food… or, if his father had noticed, made to name all of the nutrients in each piece.
The teenager nodded, “Of course, sir. Princeton is the dream.”
“Just like his old man,” Stuart said, clapping his son on the back. “Farkle was officially named valedictorian about a week ago and his test scores are impeccable. Kid’s gonna give me a run for my money one of these days.”
And yet he could still 'use the leg up’… Sure.
Anyway, the dinner ended up feeling more like a job interview.
What were his goals?
His strengths? Weaknesses?
Where did he see himself in ten years?
His parents and the Coleman’s did realize he’d only been 18 for two weeks, right? Sure, in fucking middle school he’d thought he’d rule the world but things changed. He had realized quickly how easily someone could topple you from your high horse, how exhausting it was to be on point every second of every day, to never let it all in…
Really, all the dinner had done was remind Farkle Minkus of both just how uncertain his future really was and yet how little choice he had in it.
Farkle shot into an upright position on the edge of his mattress, bouncing one leg and drumming his cell phone against the thigh of the other. Suddenly, he felt incredibly restless and wired. Running a hand down his face, he thought about maybe texting Zay or calling Lucas, maybe even video chatting Smackle.
The problem was that he didn’t really want to do any of those things.
His legs twitched more sporadically and it felt like his skin was crawling.
What he wanted was to move.
Jumping up, he grabbed the jacket from the back of his desk chair and practically flew across the room to his door. Slipping down the hall to the private elevator, Farkle glanced over his shoulder in the direction of the muffled yelling from his parents.
Maybe he should tell him he was leaving; it was what most responsible teenagers did, right?
Without pausing in his stride, Farkle stepped into the elevator and pushed the button for the ground floor, not even seeing his mother or father before the doors slide closed.
He pulled at his hair as he moved through the lobby and waved to the doorman in passing before stepped out into the chilly night air of New York. A perk of being further north in the spring, Farkle thought.
He veered to the left, not really having any idea where he wanted to go or really caring as long as it was no longer the top floor of Minkus International.
When had his own home become so suffocating?
His ceiling was a planetarium and his bedroom alone was the size of some small apartments, he had more space than he knew what to do with. 
So, why did it feel like the residence was slowly running out of oxygen, filling more and more with carbon monoxide with each passing? The ratio was all off and it made his head feel dizzy even as it pounded.
Farkle didn’t know how long he was walking before he came to stand before Topanga’s, hands stuffed into his pockets. Somehow, in all of New York, he ended up at the cafe her family owned.
Standing at the railing, he could see the glowing ‘OPEN’ sign and, just behind it, Riley Matthews sitting at the corner booth and tucking cutlery into paper napkins.
She looked…nice and happy, Farkle guessed.
She was smiling warmly and nodding, glancing to the side now and then to say something to her mother behind the counter, that curly brown hair cascading over her shoulder each time. Her younger brother was on one of the cozy chairs, occasionally tossing an opinion over his shoulder to the women. They would both just roll their eyes, Riley’s chocolate ones always looking more amused than annoyed. And even Mr. Matthews was there, sitting across from his daughter and grading papers.
They looked like whatever it was his family always tried to look like.
Clenching the railing until it hurt a little, Farkle felt something cold and bitter in his chest.
Riley just had to have everything, didn’t she? The personality, the looks, the loving family, and the perfect grades. How exactly was he supposed to not hate her?
As he watched, Riley’s eyes flickered over her father’s shoulder and to the window, to him.
Her smile remained, only her eyebrows creasing together. They watched each other for a long moment and Farkle felt something completely different flicker to life in his chest. Something like fire, catching in his lungs and tightening his muscles until they too burned.
Riley’s gaze shifted back down and she slid from the booth, causing Farkle’s stomach to drop.
He was suddenly extremely aware that he’d just been standing there and watching her like a fucking stalker, and only after being a total dick to her just earlier that day. So, now he was going to have to face the music of that snappy voice and ‘resting bitch face’ as Zay deemed it.
Riley stopped to say something to her father, resting a hand on his shoulder, before bouncing over to the door. She grabbed a jacket and pulled it on as she pushed her away outside, stopping to stand a few feet from the door as it slowly shut behind her. She looked up at him, still on the stairs and still painfully gripping the railing.
“You look at little like your detoxing.” Riley said after a long moment of silence.
Farkle cocked his head to the side, “I might be feeling a little on edge.”
Her eyebrows drew closer together and she took another step forward, looking down at her boots, “Is everything okay, Farkle?”
Why did she have to do that? Ask like that? Like she cared? Why, why, why on Earth would she care? She didn’t even want to breathe the same air as him a few weeks ago! He hated her, but so what, because she hated him, too, right?
So, why?
It was infuriating to him that there was no equation or textbook that he could turn to for the answers on Riley Matthews. With little to now options left, he just narrowed his eyes at her and shrugged, collapsing down to sit on the cement steps.
Riley bit the inside of her cheek and paused a second before moving to stand before him at the bottom of the stairs. Her hands were folded in front of her, those ever-smiling rosebud lips downcast to form a steady frown. Her eyes scanned over at him from up close and she shifted on her feet.
“Is…” She seemed to hesitate before powering on, “Is it your parents?”
Farkle’s hung head shot up, hand in his hair, looking bewildered. Maybe he didn’t give Riley Matthews enough credit because apparently she was much more preceptive than he’d ever thought.
It was all the answer Riley needed.
With a nod, she came to stand less than a foot from him, raising her eyebrows expectantly and nudging his knee with her hand, “Well, move over!”
Since he hated her, he probably should have just told her to fuck off but Farkle found himself sliding to make room for the girl instead. She positioned herself directly next to him on the step, their shoulders brushing from the narrowness of the railings.
Clapping her hands together, Riley turned her head to him and gave him a look, “Are we really going to do this who uncomfortable silence thing again? Just talk, Minkus! I’m only trying to help!”
“Yeah, but, why?” He asked before he could stop himself. He had to know, as a scientist he could only seek answers to life’s mysteries.
“What do you mean ‘why’?” She asked, resting her elbows on her knees and leaning forward.
“Well, Matthews, I thought I was ‘such an asshole’.”
The corners of Riley’s mouth flickered and she bit her lip, shaking her head, “And you are. But luckily for you, I am not.”
Farkle’s finally let his eyes roamed over her as she examined her hands closely.
Her every edge looked so soft, like a glow encased her and made it impossible for him to sharpen his focus when viewing her so directly. Like the sun… or maybe a quasar, what the scientific community agreed was the brightest point of light in the known universe.
“No, you’re not.” The second he said it, he wanted to club himself over the head.
Riley froze at his words.
What the utter fuck is wrong with you, Minkus?
He silently prayed to the god he didn’t believe in that she would just let it slip, let it go. He should have known better, though, because Riley Matthews didn’t let things go. She poked and prodded, meddled and schemed.
Slowly, she turned her head to him and leaned in closer, something Farkle would have thought impossible a moment before with how tightly they were already packed. But suddenly he couldn’t think at all because, goddamn, the girl was practically just inches from him and staring right into his soul, as if she truly believed he had one.
“Have you ever read Robert Frost?” Riley asked in a hushed tone, her open gaze flickering over his face before settling on his electric eyes. “Fire and Ice?”
Numbly, he shook his head, recalling somewhere in the back of his mind the cool, icy hatred he’d been encased in at seeing Riley with her perfect life and family and how quickly he’d thawed just under weight of her warm scrutiny.
She licked her lips and Farkle couldn’t help but just glance, just flicker, down to her mouth.
For some reason, the sight made it hard to swallow as he forced himself back to her eyes.
“Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desire,” She paused and maybe he was crazy but he thought she might have glanced down at his own lips before continuing, “I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice,”
Riley then wrenched her gaze from him, looking out at the little patio in front of Topanga’s while still whispering, only quicker, and playing with her hands, “I think I know enough of hate to say that for destruction ice is also great and would suffice.”
Smiling a little, she stood and turned to face him. Her arms crossed over her chest, one hand moving up to tuck her hair behind her ear as she watched her shuffling feet, “Maybe that’ll help you understand why, Farkle.”
And then Riley turned and slipped back inside of Topanga’s without another word to him.
Farkle followed her movements, watching as she seemed to melt right back into her family with ease and feeling even more restless and wired than he had when he’d set out.
Okay, wow! Like, soooo much sexual tension and I, like, wasn’t even planning on that! Like, holy shit! Fire and Ice is my favorite Robert Frost and I thought it was very appropriate for this pair… In this story, I’ve kind of established science as Farkle’s things, but english and literature is definitely Riley’s. I always head-canon Riley as a writer, to be honest, because of the Girl Meets 1961 and Rosie McGee being one.

- after high school, the boys go to colleges that are far apart, but they keep in contact through skype/facetime/texting and the girls ofc 
- during their 2nd year of college, they take a road trip alone because the girls get off class 2 weeks later and for like guys bonding time or something like that
- they like make it to hollywood, and they’re just chilling: farkle is singing, zay is playing the guitar, and lucas is on drums (he learned to play back in texas in order for a way to release his anger)
- BUT LIKE THEY’RE RLLY FuCKING GOOD and theyre approached by a big hot shot manager, and after like a 3 hour phone call with the girls, and a lot of complementing, theyre like hell yeah
- they want their album to be authentic to they take the rest 2 years of college to write and record songs and such 
- farkle is singer, but he also plays piano, and ofc he writes a lot of the emotional songs (he gets a lot of inspiration through riley)
- lucas is rlly good at pop-country songs, but while farkle writes a lot of emotional songs, he writes songs that has lots of creative and unique lyrics (i mean, his gf is maya) 
- zay ofc is like the life of the party, and his songs are LITTT and there those rlly catchy songs that you love but also hate bc they get in your head and wont get out yk what i mean 
- i imagine their sound to be a mix between maroon 5/coldplay/the beatles
- when they first started, farkle’s father wants to rent out stadiums and get them on talk shows thru connections, but farkle put his foot down and was like if we’re going to do this, we’re going to do this by ourselves

- riley has always wanted a knight to sweep her off her feet, and farkle decides that she needs to be proposed like a princess. the boys are 24 when they preform at the superbowl, in front of 100+ million ppl
- they’re at their last song, which is a new song that farkle wrote for riley, and you can bet she is in front, cheering her bf on. roses and candles are lit in a makeshift stage that leads to riles, and he proposes and its like a fairytale  
- lucas and maya are more lowkey, they’re in their beds, just stealing kisses, and watching stand up comedies when lucas slides a ring to maya, and just ask her if she wants to rodeo with him until they die. ofc she says yes
- zay would propose on smackle’s bday
- he would do kind of a quest where she has to find clues that lead her to places all over new york, until she ends up at topangas
- there, theres is the book of etiquette that he gave her in high school that he managed to steals from her drawer
- a part of the books says “a single pady speaks in quiet, soft tone” or something like that, but its crossed out, and he writes in it, “ i hope you scream yes when i ask you to marry me” o r something like that
- you can bet all their lives are going to be eventful, full w drama, screaming babies, and diapers, but they wouldn’t want it no other way

Everything Has Changed
Prompt by Anonymous: riley hits her head during cheer and when she comes to, her memory is foggy and she has a huge crush on farkle instead of lucas
Word Count: 3182
Summary: Pre-Ski Lodge AU in which Riley starts to fall for Farkle, basically just the prompt. Riarkle with a lil’ bit of Lucaya.

It was the big day. Riley’s first high school cheer tryouts were today and she was determined to succeed. Her friends were all watching, which the rest of the team found unusual, but didn’t mind. They all wished her the best before she went out to do the routine she’d been practicing for weeks.
“Good Luck, Riley,” Lucas said, a smile stretched across his lips as he squeezed her hand.
She melted inside and couldn’t hide it.
“Thank you, Lucas,” she said smiling after him like an idiot.
She was in a trance when Farkle approached to give his encouragements.
“Break a leg out there, Riley. I have complete faith in you as always. You’re gonna go great.”
She snapped out of it, saying, “Thank you, Farkle. That means a lot. Where’s Smackle?”
“Oh… well, she kinda broke up with me. I mean it was mutual and we’re still friends, but she decided to sit this out. She didn’t want it to be too awkward, you know?”
“Oh, I’m so sorry Farkle! I had no idea. Anyway, thank you for that bode of confidence. I feel good about this.”
Zay told Riley a joke to get her to laugh before her performance and Maya tried to dissuade her from going on like she did every year.
“Riles, one of these times you’re gonna get hurt and so help me when that day comes, there will be nothing I can do!”
“Relax, Maya. I’ll be fine. All these years and I still haven’t managed to really get hurt.”
“Well if I can’t stop you, I wish you the best.”
“Thank you, Peaches.”
And with that, Riley took the floor to do her routine.
It started out well. Riley nailed every turn, kick, and jump. It was obvious that she had really practiced. It wasn’t until Riley attempted a back handspring that things went wrong. She didn’t quite land the jump and she hit her head pretty hard on the mat.
Riley was groggy when she opened her eyes and saw a blurry face.
“Riley! Are you alright?” Farkle yelled.
“Hmm? Oh yeah, I’m fine, I think,” she smiled up at him.
“Alright Matthews, let’s get you to the nurse’s office. Someone get her dad.” Coach Harada barked.
When Coach and Riley got to the nurse’s office, the nurse instructed Riley to lay down on the couch and rest with an ice pack on her head. After a while, she dozed off, but not long after, she was softly shaken awake by Cory, who was ready to take her home. When they got home, Topanga was waiting for them.
“Goodness, Riley! Are you okay?”
“Yes yes, I‘m just tired.”
“Okay, Sweety, get some rest and I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Okay. Goodnight!”
Riley changed into her pajamas and drifted off and in her sleep, she dreamed she was back at school earlier that day. She saw herself in class daydreaming about what it would be like to be on the cheer team and date the guy of her dreams. She couldn’t help but be satisfied, even if this was just a dream. When she woke up, her eyes fluttered open to see Maya sitting in the bay window.
“Good morning, Riles. Are you feeling better?”
“Yes, Peaches, just a little sore.”
“Did you get enough rest?”
“Yes, Maya. And I had the most wonderful dream about…”
“Lucas? It is Lucas?”
“What? No! Why would you guess that??”
“Because you have the biggest, most annoying crush on him.”
“No, I don’t!  What are you talking about? I like Farkle, Maya.”
“What? That’s news to me. You’ve been drooling over Lucas since the seventh grade when he first moved here.”
“I’ll admit that I liked him for a while, but that was just superficial, I think. Once I got to know him and really spend time with him outside of middle school, I kinda got over it. He’s a great guy, but he’s just a friend. Farkle, though… he’s the one I have a crush on. He’s so kind all the time and he’s so supportive. He always believes in me and wants me to do the best I can and he encourages me to keep improving. He’s perfect.”
“Riley, are you sure you’re okay? What is the capital of our country?”
“Washington, D.C.”
“What about New York state?
“Albany. Maya, what are you doing?”
“When you fell and hit your head, I think you may have gotten a little jumbled up. You’re being weird. Well… not really, you’re being you. But something is up. You’re in love with Lucas, not Farkle. Farkle has a girlfriend.”
“No, he doesn’t. Smackle broke up with him yesterday. He told me right before tryouts.”
“I think you may have dreamt that up.”
“No I didn’t, ask him.”
Maya grabbed her phone out of her pocket and texted Farkle, after reading his response that confirmed Riley’s story, she sighed.
“Well, Riley, it seems you’re right. You seem fine if you ignore the huge fact that you’re over Lucas. If you do anything else weird, I’m telling your parents.”
“While I don’t really know what you’re referring to, I will do my best to be a normal happy Riley.”
“Okay, Riles. Get some more rest and I’ll see you later.”
“Bye, Peaches.”
“Bye, Riley,” Maya crawled out the window before sticking her head back into the bedroom, “Hey, Riles?”
“Yes, Maya?”
“Are you sure you’re not just, you know, stepping back for me like you did before? I don’t want you to give up on Lucas just because I like him too.”
“No, Peaches. I really just don’t like him that way. I wouldn’t do that again, seeing as it didn’t work at all last time.”
“Okay,” and with that, she turned back around and headed out the door.

After a Saturday filled with naps and nothing in between, Riley left her room on Sunday morning to look for her family. When she entered the kitchen, she saw not only her family at the table, but Maya, Lucas, Zay, Smackle, and Farkle.
“Hey, Riley,” grinned Lucas, as she walked toward the table.
“Oh, Hey Lucas,” Riley responded.
“You look nice this morning. Are you feeling better?”
“Yes I am, I feel like I’ve made a full recovery, though, there’s a pretty big bump on my head.”
Lucas had obviously noticed a change in Riley’s behavior toward him and he was confused by it. While it was a little off-putting to him, he wasn’t sure how he really felt about it. Maya observed Lucas from the other side of the table and began to believe that Riley’s feelings really had changed. Maya believed that Riley would step back for her, but she also knew that Riley wasn’t a good enough liar or actress to pull this off.
“Are you going to school tomorrow, Riley?” Smackle questioned.
“Wouldn’t miss it for the world,” she answered, not making eye contact and softly smiling off somewhere.
Quickly, Maya followed her gaze and saw that she was staring in Farkle’s direction. Zay saw what Maya was doing and went to follow her gaze. When he saw Riley staring at Farkle, he caught onto what was happening. He jabbed Maya in the side to get her attention. When she looked over he looked quizzically at her, nodding toward Riley. Maya seemed like she was about to respond when Riley cleared her throat and shook her head, breaking her stare.
“So! What are you all doing here?”
“We came to check on you Riley, because we love and care about you... and also because we got bored without you,” answered Farkle.
Zay and Maya whipped their heads toward Riley to see her reaction. Her eyes brightened and she melted in a way that had previously been reserved for Lucas. She smiled but regained her composure quickly. Zay confirmed his suspicions, but Lucas was still confused as to what was happening. He looked to Zay, who was smiling and looking back and forth between Riley and Farkle. All at once he realized what was going on. He wasn’t sure when it happened, but Riley was in love Farkle. He felt like just days ago he had been the object of her affection.
As Riley snapped out of it again, the group resumed normal conversation, with the exception of Lucas, who was trying to figure out how he felt. He really did like Riley. It was weird seeing her staring at Farkle the way she used to stare at him. He wasn’t upset, though. Maybe he had waited too long to make a decision. Riley had liked him for almost three years. In a way, this made his decision easier.
The rest of the group was chattering when Smackle’s phone rang. She answered, and as the call ended, she announced, “I have to go. My mom wants me to run errands with her.”
Riley got up and walked her to the door.
“Goodbye, Smackle.Thank you so much for visiting. It really means a lot to me.”
“Thank you for allowing us to visit, the pleasure was all mine.”
While they chattered at the door for a moment, Maya and Zay made eye contact. They both knew that they would do what they could to get Riley and Farkle closer by the end of the night.
When Smackle left, Riley returned to her friends.
“Do you guys want to watch a movie or something?”
“Sure, Riles. What movie?” Maya asked.
“I don’t know, I could go for some Star Wars. What do you guys want to watch?”
“Empire Strikes Back!” yelled Farkle.
“Fine by me,” responded Zay.
“Okay, let’s do it,” said Lucas.
Maya and Zay raced to the couch and lounged on it, taking up most of it. They had a plan. When Lucas tried to sit down near Zay’s feet, Zay kicked him and told him to sit in the chair. Riley sat down on the end of the couch and Farkle looked for a place to sit.
He was about to sit down on the floor, when Zay said, “Oh! Sorry, Farkle, you can sit on the couch next to Riley, I’ll move my legs for you.”
“Thanks, Zay,” Farkle acknowledged as he sat down with Riley.
Maya and Zay looked at each other and congratulated themselves on a job-well-done. Lucas looks to them and realizes that they’re up to something.
“Hey guys, I’m gonna make some popcorn,” Lucas announced, “Zay, why don’t you come help me.”
Zay sat up and stood, then walked into the kitchen.
“What’s going on, Zay?”
“Well, isn’t it kinda obvious that Riley is into Farkle?”
“Yeah, I’ve picked up on that, but I don’t get it. I thought she liked me. I don’t have a problem with her liking Farkle, but this seemed to happen quickly.”
“Maybe it’s just been happening over time. It’s been three years, you can’t have expected her to wait around forever.”
“Didn’t it seem like she still liked me on Friday, though?”
“Look, Lucas, Riley’s the nicest girl out there, and maybe you mistook her being nice for her still liking you, but I’ve gone to school with you guys for a while now, and I see the way Farkle looks at Riley and the way she looks at him. I don’t think this is new at all. I just think that maybe she hadn’t realized it yet, or she knew it would be wrong because Farkle was with Smackle, but that’s over now.”
“What am I going to do? I still love Riley”
“Do you still also love Maya? If so, then it sounds like your decision got a lot easier. It not, then you don’t deserve Riley or Maya. If you liked Riley more the whole time, you shouldn't have dragged them through that triangle.”
“No, I do love Maya.”
“Well, then, problem solved. Let Riley be happy and accept the fact that she doesn’t need you to be happy.”
“Zay, you really know how to talk sense into a person.”
“Lucas, you really needed it. Let’s make some popcorn and get back to setting up Riley and Farkle.
“Okay,” Lucas stated hesitantly, before deciding to just go with it.
When Lucas and Zay returned to the couch they saw Riley and Farkle chattering distractedly. Zay leaned over to Maya, informing her that Lucas was onboard with the plan. When Maya heard this, she felt a little giddy inside. Not just for Riley, but for herself. If Lucas was willing to help Riley date someone else, perhaps she had a chance with him. She’d been observing Riley for days and finally believed that she was actually over Lucas. Now that she knew, she was ready and willing to set Riley up with Farkle.
“Guys, I have an idea,” Lucas quietly plotted to his friends.
“What is it?” Maya and Zay replied.
“Just watch,” he whispered before announcing loudly, “I've actually never seen Star Wars.”
“What?!?” Riley and Farkle reacted.
“How can you have avoided Star Wars all this time? It's everywhere!” Farkle questioned.
“I don't know, it was never really my thing.”
“This is ridiculous! We have to watch all of them…well maybe not the prequels,” Riley said as she began planning the events of the day.
“You and I aren't leaving until you watch them, Mr. Face,” Farkle jokingly threatened.
“Sounds like a plan. But why do you need to be here, Farkle? I can just stay here alone with Riley and you can go home.”
“No, you can’t! – I mean…you could, I guess. I just...”
“No no no, Lucas. Farkle is staying. He's my favorite Star Wars partner. I can't have a marathon without him!” Riley defended enthusiastically as she wrapped her arms around Farkle in a playfully protective hug.
Zay and Maya were impressed with Lucas’s work as Farkle looked at Riley and smiled gratefully.
Farkle leaned into Riley’s ear and whispered, “Riley...we can all go if you want to be alone with Lucas, in case you want to...you know...talk or something.”
“No, Farkle,” Riley responded quietly, “I don’t want to do anything with Lucas. I really want you to stay.”
Farkle’s eyes brightened as she spoke, then he looked down at her as she tightened her hug before releasing him before laying her head on his shoulder. Farkle sat back on the couch and relaxed as Episode IV began playing.
Throughout the entirety of the first two movies, Riley and Farkle remained in the same position, unmoving. When Empire Strikes Back ended, the gang decided to take a break before starting Return of the Jedi.
“Is anyone hungry?” Zay polled.
“I could eat,” responded Lucas.
“Alrighty then, let’s go get some food!”
“But Zay!,” Maya interrupted dramatically, “Riley here should get all the rest she can before she goes back to school. I think she should stay here.”
“Well,” Lucas played along, “We don’t want her to be here all by herself.”
“Someone should stay behind with her while the rest of us pick up some food from that Mexican place down the street,” Maya mused.
“I’d do it, but I don’t trust any of you to get my order right,” said Zay.
“Ditto,” Maya noted.
“I’ll do it,” piped Farkle.
“Yeah! Great idea!” Maya yelled, “Lucas, Zay, let’s go. Farkle, text me your orders.”
With that, Maya grabbed Lucas and Zay’s arms and dragged them out the front door.
Unbeknownst to Farkle and Riley, Maya had ordered the food on her phone so it would be delivered to the house. While Riley and Farkle thought she was getting food with Zay and Lucas, the three of them had actually re-entered the house through the bay window and were peering through the hallway into the living room.
Without Maya around as a safety net, Riley got a little nervous alone with Farkle.
“Hey, Riley,” Farkle murmured quietly, “How are things going with Lucas?”
“Why do you keep asking about him?”
“We all know how you feel about him,” Farkle said, frowning at his feet.
“Do you? How do I feel about him? How would you know?”
“You talk about it a lot...and you stare sometimes. When he speaks, you melt a little.”
“Well maybe it seems like that, but I only feel about one person that way and it’s not Lucas.”
“Huh?”
“You and Maya seem to think I’m obsessed with Lucas, but I’m not. I haven’t since, like, seventh grade.”
“Sorry Riley, it just seemed like... I guess we...Well, maybe I...”
“Farkle, are you okay?”
“Are you okay? I just don’t get it.”
“Get what? I’m fine.”
“I mean, if you don’t like Lucas...who’s the person?”
“What?”
“You said only feel like melting with one person. Who?”
“Oh,” Riley went red, “Well, it’s a tough situation.”
“How so?”
“Well, he just got out of another relationship. And I don’t want to mess our current one. And he seems to think I’m in love with someone else.”
“Who?” Farkle repeated.
“...Well,” Riley internally debated with herself before saying, “Farkle, it’s you.”
“Huh? Oh that's-- wait what?” Farkle looked up, realizing what she said.
“Farkle I think I’ve been in love with you since I met you, it just took a while to realize. You’ve always supported me, from when you saved my life the day we met, to two days ago at cheer tryouts. You never doubt me, even when I’m wrong. You’re always on my team. I love that. You’re the greatest partner I could ask for. I don’t know. I just needed to get that off my chest. Maybe I shouldn’t have. Was that a mistake?’
Farkle sat up while Riley had been speaking and grabbed her hands before responding, “No. No, it wasn’t. I’m glad you said that. I’ve always loved you too. When Lucas showed up, I watched you fall for him and just gave up. I did like Smackle, but it’s different. We’re so similar. It wasn’t a good partnership because we didn’t need each other. You make me better, more understanding.”
The two sat there looking at each other before Riley kissed Farkle on the cheek. Farkle blushed, before leaning toward Riley and grabbing her face, not doing nothing.
“Are we gonna try this?” Farkle questioned.
“I think so.”
And with that, Farkle pulled Riley’s face to his and kissed her. It was glorious. All the love that had been between them since the first grade was up in the air, and it wasn’t going anywhere.
“We did it!” Zay and Maya cheered as they high-fived and congratulated themselves.
“What are you doing here? And what did you do?”
“We’re watching you and we were successful in making sure you got together.”
“What about our food?” Farkle frowned jokingly.
“It’s on its way.”
Lucas gave a signal of assurance to Farkle and Riley, before turning back to his partners-in-crime. The three returned to the couch with the others to wait for the food. Riley and Farkle spent the rest of the evening snuggled up together, enjoying the time with their wonderful, supportive friends. All was well.

so this prompt is really old so im very sorry about that. this monster of a drabble is a gm triangle au, bc we all know the whole maya identity crises arc was handled terribly, so this is my attempt to fix it, it takes place a few hours after maya said “you want me to go home? i’ll go home.”
“Dude, you need to decide.”
“Look, I,” he hesitated. “I think I know who I choose. I just need to talk to them.”
The boys approached the Matthew’s front door, not the window, upon Zay’s insistence. Lucas was once again baffled by the fact that they kept their front door unlocked. They walked in to see Cory and Topanga … and Katy?
“Uh, hi,” Lucas said, rubbing the back of his neck. He really didn’t need all of the parents to be here for this. “I need to talk to the girls.”
“They’re in Riley’s room,” Katy said, raising an eyebrow.
As Lucas made his way up the stairs he could hear Cory sputtering.
“You just sent him to my daughter’s room!”
“Don’t worry sir, he’s in there all the time.”
Zay needed to learn how to keep his big mouth shut. Lucas shook his head and knocked on Riley’s door.
“Come in.”
Riley had changed into her pajamas and was sprawled out on her bed reading their English assignment. She lit up when she saw him.
“Lucas!”
“Hi,” he said, glancing around the room in confusion. “Is Maya in the bathroom?”
Riley’s face fell and she looked down at her nails. “No, we had a bit of a disagreement. She went home.”
“But, her mom is still in your kitchen.” Riley’s head popped up.
“She is?”
“Yeah, and she thought Maya was up here. How long ago did she leave?”
Riley shrugged. “A few hours ago I guess.”
Lucas’ heart skipped a beat. “No one’s heard from her for hours? And no one was concerned?”
He was texting Maya before he finished his sentence. Riley’s mouth opened and shut and then she texted her too. Lucas was halfway down the stairs before she had gotten off of her bed, his phone pressed to his ear.
“C’mon, pick up pick up pick up.”
The chatter at the table died down as they heard the pair coming down.
“What’s going on?” Katy asked. “Where’s Maya?”
Riley looked at her sheepishly as Lucas cursed and redialed Maya’s number.
“We don’t know.”

“Lucas, dude you gotta calm down.”
“How can I calm down? Maya is missing. It’s been hours since anyone heard from her and her phone is going straight to voicemail and Riley said when she left she was upset and—”
“Lucas.” Farkle grabbed him by his shoulders. “Katy went to check their apartment and she’s calling Shawn and Kermit. Riley went with Cory to check all of Maya’s favorite places and Topanga is talking to the police. We’re gonna find her.”
Lucas ran a hand through his hair and paced around Riley’s room. He hadn’t sat down or even really breathed since they realized Maya was gone.
“But what if something happened to her? What if someone took her? Oh my—someone actually could have kidnapped her. What if we never see her again? What if I never see her and get to—”
He froze. Zay raised an eyebrow. “Never get to what?”
“Nothing,” he sighed. He covered his face with his hands. “I’m just worried about her.”
“I know man. We all are.” Zay stood and put a hand on Lucas’ shoulder comfortingly.
“Yeah, that’s not gonna work. I’m getting him a Xanax.”
Zay pointed after Farkle. “That is a great idea. Try not to,” he motioned widely with his arms, “damage anything.”
Just like that Lucas was alone. He took a deep breath and dropped onto the edge of Riley’s bed. He shut his eyes to try and calm himself down, but all it did was bring up the image of Maya—her hair and her smile and the way her eyes shone when she called him Ranger Rick and—
“Huckleberry?”
Lucas’ head snapped up to see Maya kneeling, half inside the window. Her feet barely hit the ground before he had swept her up into a hug so tight that she had to turn her head to the side just to breathe.
Maya’s heart began to race as soon as he touched her—she hoped he couldn’t tell. She had taken off her jacket and he had taken off his button up and there was more skin-to-skin contact than she had ever experienced with him. It made her feel warm all over. She had never been this close to him, and the last time she was even near this close to him was—
Thinking of Texas would not do her any good right now.
“What are you doing here? Where’s Riley?”
“Looking for you,” he said, finally releasing her. She looked up at him, her mind fuzzy.
“Looking for me?”
“Maya, no one knew where you were. Your mom thought you were still here and Riley thought you were at home and you weren’t answering your phone and I—we were all worried about you.”
Maya felt her face flush and she looked away. “I turned my phone off. I didn’t really want to talk to anybody.” Then, almost imperceptibly, “To Riley.”
Lucas’ face softened. “Riley mentioned you guys had a disagreement. What happened? You guys never fight.”
She took a deep breath. “Today in art class Mr. Jackson said some things about my art, about me not having a voice or whatever. And it—it didn’t sit well with Riley I guess. We came back here and she started saying how I wasn’t me anymore because I was behaving and getting good grades and that kind of stuff, and then she told her parents and they brought my mom into it and,” she paused. She had grown quieter with every word she spoke. “They all agreed with her. They said I was … broken.”
“Maya—”
Maya waved a hand dismissively. “And then Riley got it in her head that not only was I not me anymore, but that I had turned into her. Because of our outfits and our hair and you.”
His face fell. Had he caused this? Had his inability to choose driven the girls apart? He tried to meet her eyes but she kept them directed at her hands as she picked at her nails.
“Well, I thought it was stupid and I was angry. So I left and I turned my phone off and I went back to school.”
“You were at school?” He asked incredulously. Of course she would have gone to the one place no one would ever expect to find her. She chuckled.
“Yeah. I knew that Mr. Jackson kept the art room open after hours and I wanted to see if Riley was right, if I had really lost myself. So I tried painting for a bit, and then Mr. Jackson came in. We talked and he said he had taken another look at my painting and that he loved it.”
“That’s great!” Maya made a face. “Not great?”
“Not really. He said it just had to be looked at from farther away and,” she took a deep breath and looked him in the eyes. “It was a purple cat. I painted a purple cat, Lucas. Riley’s right—I turned into her.”
Maya looked so small and so hurt and so defeated and it broke Lucas’ heart. He grabbed one of her hands and made sure she was looking at him.
“Maya, look at me. Riley was not right. You didn’t lose yourself and you definitely did not turn into her. First of all, it’s impossible to actually become someone else. Second of all, what was that lesson Mr. Matthews taught us, the one about the secret of life?”
“People change people,” she said softly. Lucas smiled.
“Right. People change people. You saw it with me, didn’t you? I used to be angry and violent, but meeting you guys changed that. You guys changed me for the better. You didn’t become Riley, you’ve just been influenced by her. You haven’t gotten detention in a while because you matured and you realized what was appropriate and what was crossing the line. You started getting good grades because we’re in high school and grades are important and because it feels good. Maya, we all saw how happy you were when you got that A in Spanish.”
There were tears in Maya’s eyes but she laughed.
“Just because you’ve changed doesn’t mean you’re not you. Everybody changes, especially when their teenagers. But you are still you. You still make fun of Mr. Matthews and you still make jokes in class and you still pretend to hate school. You still defend your friends no matter what and help them no matter what. You still talk to the homeless man in the subway station near your apartment and give him a dollar or leftovers whenever you can.”
The tears in her eyes began to fall and Lucas brought his other hand up to wipe them away, lingering on her cheek.
“You are still you because you are still sassy and funny and selfless and kind, and I know that because those are all only some of the things I like about you. You’re Maya, and Maya is amazing.”
Maya looked at him like he was the only other person in the world—in that moment, he was. They both knew that in the past few minutes something big had changed between the two of them.
“Do you feel a little better now?”
She nodded and smiled. “Yeah. Thank you.”
Lucas wouldn’t stop looking at her in a way that made her feel something and she knew if she didn’t do something to stop him he might do something she wasn’t ready for. She wiped at her eyes.
“Now we can figure out this stupid triangle thing.”
Lucas shook his head. “What is there to figure out?”
“What do you mean?” Maya asked. Had he seriously forgotten about the disaster that had been the past few months?
“Maya, do you really think, after all of that, that I’m not gonna choose you?”
Her eyes widened and she blinked owlishly. He laughed and tugged on her hand.
“Come on, let’s go let everyone know you’re ok.”
Riley backed away from the door quickly, hurrying into her bathroom and shutting the door. She was ok. Well, she would be, and when Lucas picked Maya, she would be ready.

Inspiration and Reading Asks:
1. How long ago did you start reading fanfiction? Writing fanfiction? Started reading when I was 12, started writing it, when I was 14, so reading, 19 years ago, and writing 17 years ago.
2. How do you spend your time when it comes to fanfiction? Are you primarily a fic reader, writer, or a perfect 50/50 split of both? I’m a 33.3% reader, 33.3% WIP machine, a 33.4% writer, and 100% mess, I usually spend my time doing an absurd amount of WIP that comes out of thin air, like, I can be eating an apple, boom, Bori WIP, a cup of coffee? Boom, Roro WIP, breathing? Boom, Lucaya WIP (that last one happens the most)
3. Are there any fics that inspired you to write what you do? It’s called Unfaithful (EN), it’s on fanfiction.net, and honestly, it’s so well written, that I had nausea 3 times while reading it, the pain was so palpable that I felt ill from it.
4. Link your three favorite fics right now. Right now, and in order 1 - Unfaithful (EN)  2 - Twenty Nights  3 - Perfect 
6. How do you find a new fic to read? Where do you primarily read fanfiction? Fanfiction or AO3, and have an excel doc with my favorite ships, then I go to the random number generator, putting 1 as the minimum and maximum the number of the last ship I added to the list, then hit random, and read about that ship, keep things fresh.
7. Do you prefer to read short fics or long fics? Both.
8. How often do you reblog/comment on fics that you like? When they are on Tumblr, a few times.
9. Tag 3 fic writers you think are underrated/unknown in the fandom/fanfiction community. I’m sorry, but I don’t know if they have Tumblr, so, amirmitchell, snowdrifts, and Onde Tu Esteves
10. What’s your favorite fandom, pairing, or character to read fic for? Fandom: Game of Thrones, love all those modern universe AU I have to say. Pairing: Lucaya (Not a surprise) Character: Lucas Friar, Portgas D. Ace, Roronoa Zoro, or Prince Zuko.
Fanfiction Writing Asks:
11. How do you come up with your fic titles? Coffee, food, and usually, Spotify, all that, sometimes, make my brain work into having titles about the things I want to write.
13. Do you outline your fics? How much of a headache would someone get if they just looked at an outline of yours without reading the fic? I do outlines, in 5 stages, so a pretty big one. 1 - I write in my notebook, what I want to write, like a general idea. 2 - Post it on my walls and door, to give the story some structure. 3 - Notebook outline the arch of the story. 4 - Outline every chapter on word. 5 - Reduce that chapter into mini arches to write faster.
14. Do you have a personal word minimum that you hold yourself too? Why or why not? I do (now), I usually don’t post anything that is less than 2900 words, Why? because we must not forget that writers not only write for people in the fandom, they mainly write for themselves, and I love to read something among that word count because that’s long enough to keep me on the hook.
16. Do you research for your fics? If so, how deep of a rabbit hole have you gone down by accident when researching? I do research for my fics, how deep? I can give indications for divorce paperwork in the state of New York, even if you want or not to go scorch the earth with the “fault” rule, I can give an appropriate value to an apartment or a house in New York, Texas, Nashville, and San Francisco, and I can do taxes on those states too, and I know more about how high school classes work in the US than in my country, even when I went to those classes, and I’m from Santiago, Chile, you know, in South America, like, the last country of South America
17. How obsessively do you sit and stare at your fic after you’ve just posted and wait for feedback? I don’t, once I finish writing something, I run away, and watch anime for a few hours, or work (Yeah, sometimes I write on my lunch hour)
18. Do you have a WIP that you keep telling yourself you’ll eventually get back to, but deep down you know that’s probably a lie? I do apologize to “The Games we Play” I have no idea how I outlined your 26 chapters, but I’m still on chapter 2, and I’m sorry.
19. Do you edit your fics after you write them, or do you prefer to just hit post and run (because it’s someone else’s problem now)? Sometimes I do because sometimes, I write things wrong.
20. What’s your favorite part about the fanfiction writing process? That happiness I get when I’m in the Zone, and I write something that makes me say “Fuck, that was good”
21. What’s your least favorite part about the fanfiction writing process? I call it “The Deep White”, also known as writer’s block.
23. What’s your absolute favorite trope to write? I don’t write it anymore, because I was banned from a forum for writing it, but I love to write a bad ending, like “Killing the main character that I make you love for 30 chapters in the end” ending. I’m evil, I know, sue me.
24. What’s a trope that you’d like to never hear about as long as you live, let alone write? The “Good girl trying to change the bad boy,” I hate, apologies, I DESPISE that trope, it’s not cool, first, to be with someone abusive, and second, to try to change someone because you think you’re so almighty that you will change him (or her)  because of love, bs, I SAID BS.
25. Do you listen to music as you write? If possible, link your writing playlist. I do, and of course, it’s named “Writing Shiet” because my brain can only process decent titles for fics (Says the guy who once named a fic “No Title”) Here’s the link 
26. What’s your biggest distraction when writing? Anime and Manga.
27. Do you like to give your readers some warning of what might be coming or just slap them in the face with content at random? I don’t usually do it, but when I do it, I do it cryptic, like “You might be surprised, but this, I called in the beginning.”
28. How do you deal with writing pressure (ie: pressure to update, negative comments, deadlines, etc)? I ignore it, If I can ignore good advice, ignore something that gives me more stress it’s an easy cake.
29. Have you ever written for an exchange or event of some kind? Which one(s)? Did you enjoy it? I did but didn’t submit, I wrote for 2019 fictoberfest on Tumblr, but never send a shit, I did enjoy it tho
30. Post a snippet from your current WIP without context - no more than 300 words. "Well, we're still not in Texas," he says, implying something not PG-13 at all. "My God, in what did I turn you?" Maya teases him before getting up and grab his hand, pulling him up. Lucas grins at her, "On," he replies, making Maya flirty hit his chest
31. Of the characters you write for, which is your favorite? Has that choice been swayed at all by your followers/readers’ reactions to certain ones? I love writing Lucas and Maya, and honestly don’t know if it helps me or not LOL.
32. Copy and paste your top three favorite lines/jokes/sentences you’ve ever written. What fics do they come from? 1 - From November to June CH3 A few hours later, Maya heard a knock on her door. She takes a peek through the magic eye on her door and saw Lucas. She grabs her phone and fastly texts him. She was able to hear the 'ding' of his phone, and spying through the magic eye she saw his reaction. "Ok, first of all, I'm not that, second, my mother is not that, and third, I'm not gonna put that there, that's fucking gross, and probably deadly if you consider the size of my hands." he defends himself. 2 - Ten Duel Commandments CH2 Maya smiles at him, "Since you're all Texan cowboy goody-good boy, I imagine you would relate more with the honorable Lord Stark," she teases him. "Says the woman who read three books in a row and texts me at four in the morning," he replies before pulling out his phone, "R+L=J," he teases her, reading her text. "That's private, asshole," Maya recriminates him. 3 - The One Who Stayed CH18 "Then, I have less... GET OFF ME FUCKER!" Maya screamed, punching the person who grabbed her arm, "Holy shit, Lucas." she says, looking at the person she just hit. "Noted, never approach to you by surprise." Lucas says on the floor, "Well, this makes me feel more confident about you being here alone." he says before start laughing.
33. What do you like writing better: one-shots or multi-chapter stuff? Multi-chapter, unless, it’s wedding fics because I love weddings.
34. How much of yourself and your life experiences do you put into your writing? What do you think your readers’ image of you is? None.
35. How much has writing fic changed your life? Not much, but has made me happier.
36. Are there any fics or fandoms you’re embarrassed to have written or been part of? The Glee Project Fandom.
37. Give an update on your current WIP - if you don’t have one, give a sneak peek to a title or idea that you have and would like to write. "Shawn called him, and he assures him that if you try something inappropriate, he has a shotgun," she adds, making Lucas's face go pale. "Well, guess like father, like son," he comments, making Maya show unexpected interest in his words.
38. What does your writing process look like? How chaotic is it on a scale of 1 (very tame) to 10 (you can’t handle this kind of chaos)? As I explained in the outline question, pretty tame if we count that I have my outline process numbered LOL.
39. What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on? That I try to make it real, I try to make people feel something when they read.

44. Rant about something writing-related. Please, let’s stop glorifying the “Bad Boy” character, he’s an asshole, allow me to explain, Bakugo, fucking asshole, he’s just a bully with an oversized ego, no, he’s not a tsundere, no, it’s not cute, that shit is abusive, and it really makes me want to punch people in their nose when the romanticize that bullshit.
