            Kim ran to the movie theater to meet with everyone else. His eyes sparkled with hope that Chloe would be there, even though he knew she wouldn’t. It wasn’t her type of movie, but still he hoped to see her there. He grinned at the idea when cold water hit his feet.

            Kim stopped and looked down to see he was in ankle deep water that rose quickly. He grimaced as it overtook him and rose up to the rooftops. He surfaced and looked around to see everything had been flooded to the top of the buildings. Everyone swam over to a nearby rooftop and huddled together as they stared at the flood.

            Kim swam over to one where he threw his duffel bag, hoodie, and shoes onto before he enjoyed a swim. He dove under and marveled at Paris underwater. It carried a peaceful serenity he often found underwater. A slight smile tugged on his lips at the peace until a shadow passed over him. He looked up to see a boat passing through. He surfaced to stare at it when he saw a guy aboard with shaggy black hair with blue dyed tips and dressed in a blue hoodie and white Jagged Stone shirt.

            “Mom! We passed one!” the boy yelled.

            Kim’s eyes widened as he watched the boat stop and the guy threw out a life preserver. Kim clawed at the air as his eyes still on the guy. He snagged it as he was pulled towards the boat and pulled onto it. The guy took the life preserver and smiled at Kim.

            “Hey, you’re alright now. We’ll help get you to a rooftop,” the guy said.

            Kim blinked before his eyes widened. “Oh? Oh! Uh, thanks? Say, what’s your name?”

            “Oh, uh, Luka Couffaine.”

            Kim flashed a smile. “Luka, eh? I’m Kim Chiến Lê Ature.”

            “Kim? Do you go to College Francoise Dupont?”

            “Why, yes, I do. How’d you know?”

            “My sister has mentioned you before.”

            “Sister?”

            “Yeah, Ju-… oh, hello Jule.”

            Kim raised a brow as he looked behind. He jumped as Juleka stared up at him with malic in her eyes.

            “O-oh, hey, Juleka,” Kim said.

            Juleka glared at Kim, then moved to stand beside Luka. Anarka called for Luka and Juleka and they rushed off to help. Kim sighed as he watched Luka leave and Juleka shoot him a final warning glare. Kim rolled his eyes as he leaned on the boat rim.

            Kim didn’t understand the dirty looks he got from Juleka. He was just being nice and talking to her hot brother. Was there anything really wrong with that? He was sure that Luka loved the attention with how attractive he was. A thought crossed his mind as he wondered if Luka was single. He was startled by the thought as he stared into the water.

            Kim hadn’t thought that way about another guy before. Girls, sure. There was Chloe, the hottest girl alive. But there weren’t any guys hotter than him, until he saw Luka. Even Chloe was put to shame before Luka. He pursed his lips and furrowed his brow as he stared into the water. Should he be thinking this? Did he really like guys, or rather Luka? Did Luka like guys? Did he have a chance with Luka? He tried with Chloe, but she always turned him down and Luka was hotter than Chloe. Did he have any chance with a hottie like Luka?

            The boat jerked violently. Kim gasped as he gripped the side. He looked around as the boat was being tipped over. He vaulted over the edge and saw a purple fish girl. He balled his fists and swam towards her as she turned and smiled.

            “Kim! There you are. I’ve been looking for you!”

            Kim furrowed his brow and opened his mouth to speak, but inhaled water. The fish girl approached him and put a bubble around his head. He gasped and took in a breath.

            “I… I can breathe. I can talk!” Kim exclaimed.

            “Kim, will you come with me? I have something I want to show you.”

            Kim glanced back at the boat, then at the fish girl. “Only if you don’t hurt the people on that boat. They’re just trying to help the people caught in the flood.”

            “Of course! I promise I’ll leave them alone.”

            Kim nodded and allowed the fish girl to take him away. She whisked him away to the pool and sat him on the lifeguard tower made into a throne. He watched her for a time before Ladybug and Chat Noir showed up. He helped the heroes defeat Syren, who he learned after the defeat that she was Ondine. He frowned and puzzled over what caused her to be akumatized. Everything seemed fine with her when he left her, so what happened?

            Kim returned to the pool the next day. He arrived early to find out what hurt Ondine. He looked around the lobby, near the changing rooms, then near the pool. He paused when he found a scrap of paper from their game. He took it and saw that Ondine had confessed her feelings to him, but he hadn’t seen them.

            Kim frowned. He liked Ondine, but not like that. She was just his friend, one of his best friends, like Alix and Max. Ondine wasn’t Luka or Chloe, especially not Luka. He would have to let her down, but a part of him feared how she would take it. If it was enough to get her akumatized, would it happen again? Should he even mention it? What was the right option here?

            “Kim?” Ondine asked.

            Kim looked up to see Ondine staring at him and the slip of paper in his hand. He looked down at it and tried to hide it behind his back. Ondine frowned and looked away.

            “I’m sorry for yesterday. I just… I’m sorry.”

            “I… it’s ok. I did hurt you. I didn’t look at this when I should have.”

            “So?”

            “So what?”

            “Do you… do you feel the same way?”

            Kim paused, then sighed. “I’m sorry, I don’t. You’re my friend, just like Alix and Max. I just don’t see you like that. I’m sorry.”

            Tears fell from Ondine’s eyes as she forced a smile. “It’s ok. I… I had to take a chance. I just… I’m sorry I made a fool of myself doing this.”

            “This doesn’t change anything between us, does it? We’re still friends, right?”

            “I… I guess that’s all we’ll ever be.”

            Kim’s heart dropped as Ondine ran off in tears. He sighed, looked at the paper, crumbled it up, and tossed it aside. He changed back into his street clothes and left the pool. He went for a walk and ended up at the Seine. He paused when he saw the same boat from yesterday that Luka was on. He hurried towards it as faint guitar music grew louder. He passed near the boat as he saw Luka on the deck as he played the guitar.

            Kim took a breath as he steeled his nerves. His mind whirled with questions about Luka that he wanted to stop. He needed to know. He needed to take a chance. He took another breath as he approached the boat. He approached from the side that Luka saw him from.

            “Hey, Kim, right?” Luka called.

            “Yup, that’s me. Uh, may I sit with you?” Kim asked.

            “Sure.”

            Kim smiled as he rushed aboard and sat next to Luka. “So, how’ve you been since yesterday? That akuma was something, wasn’t it?”

            “It was a little terrifying, but we knew Ladybug and Chat Noir would save us. Mom just wanted to do her part as well.”

            “That was a brave thing you three did. You were heroes just like Ladybug and Chat Noir.”

            Luka smiled softly. “Thank you, though it was just something small. Nothing like what they do.”

            “Maybe, but it was still amazing. Thank you.”

            Luka’s eyes widened before his face softened again. He smiled and played a relaxing, enchanting melody. Kim listened for a while, lost in the music.

            “You play beautifully,” Kim commented.

            “Thanks, but I can’t take all the credit. This is your melody. This is what I hear.”

            “Wait, it is?”

            “It is. I’ve met only one other person with a melody like this, and I love it.”

            Kim blushed, then coughed. “I… I wouldn’t suppose you’d be interested in doing something, uh, together… would you?”

            “What’d you have in mind?”

            “I don’t know. Uh, maybe a movie together?”

            “Just the two of us?”

            “I… it doesn’t have to be. It could be a group thing if you don’t want it to be a date. I mean… it does sound farfetched, right? A date? Who said that?”

            Luka blinked, then chuckled. “A date it is then.”

            “Wait, really?”

            “Yeah. Tomorrow night sound good?”

            “Y-yeah. Yeah! Tomorrow is perfect. Do I… do I leave now? Could I… could I stay a little longer? Or would it be better if I leave? Is it too awkward if I stay? I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable.”

            Luka smiled and strummed his guitar. “Relax. You can stay if you’d like. I’d like the company if you did.”

            Kim smiled. “Then I couldn’t dare deprive anyone of company, especially of my own company. Stay I will.”

            Luka chuckled before he played his guitar. Kim sighed and relaxed in his seat as he enjoyed Luka’s music and company.

transfem scott getting lots of support from ramona and kim in the early 2000's when shit's very taboo but they all 3 have a fire forged bond and lord if they aren't going to make sure they're all as happy as they can be because they've come this far and I dunno it just makes me happy all three of them

Like I've said before. General Trans Scott enthusiast here- I love the idea of their little support network *violent coughing* I (we?) mean polycule *violent coughing* so fucking much.

Ramona I think has a bit of a more gentle hand with reassuring Scott with gender issues, but sometimes she just can't help herself from some pointed banter or teasing- how could you with someone so dense? (Said w affection)

And then Kim I think is more blunt. But like, in a good way mostly, you know? The kinda blunt that makes you snap to attention and go "Oh. Yeah that was silly of me." And if Ramona's started some sort of banter? Kim is SO piling on. Maybe sometimes she's a bit TOO blunt with it- but it's only because she's so firm in her support. She wants Scott to Get It Together- and be happier for it. So if some ribbing now and again is in order, then goddamnit she will do so! Anything to crack that shell.

And ohhh can you imagine how they would react to some transphobic bullshit?? Unholy terror would be driven into the offender before they walk off with an absurd amount of coins between them. I can feel it in my bones. Scott doesn't even have to lift a finger (if the transphobe is even noticed/processed at all, bc I honestly can see Scott just. Not realizing someone's being transphobic.) Kim giving someone a lashing with her tongue as distraction and then Ramona coming in with the hammer- BAM! Free Money! Paying literally with your life for your transphobia. A Better And Just World.

And of course (transfem Scott more specifically, here,) the way Scott would start to flourish under their support... cagey and maybe a little (perhaps a lot-) resistant to start- but Kim's blunt affirmations and no nonsense attitude for bullshit (which is what Scott insisting on "being cis" would be, c'mon now,) and Ramona's also low bullshit tolerance but less Stabby (bc I won't lie, that's probably how Kim's comments would feel,) assurances? Ough... My Heart... Be Still-

Immersed and contributing: JCU dental students on Malaita

As we flew over glistening, aquamarine water, speckled with reef, we knew this trip would be much more than an ordinary clinical placement. As a group of 3 final year dental students from James Cook University and an Australian dentist supervisor, we travelled to the Solomon Islands for a 4-week immersive experience.

Our flight landed in the bustling city of Honiara. This capital city was merely a stopover, as we were destined for the remote province of Malaita, approximately 100km to the east. Malaita is a province rich in culture and poor in infrastructure. The capital of the province is Auki, where we started our clinical journey.

The provincial hospital, Kilu’ufi, provides some dental services and was our opportunity to engage with local health teams to start our Pijin language learning venture and to understand the oral health situation in the region. So what were the key differences….toothbrushing is not widely practised, particularly among people in remote villages. The highspeed drill was broken, meaning that cavities needed to be excavated in alternative ways. There were no x-ray facilities to determine treatment plans. Treks! Some people would journey more than 8 hours; walking and riding in the back of trucks to access dental care. Last but not least…Betel nut.

This psychoactive nut from the areca plant is chewed with lime to give a short-lived euphoric ‘light-headed’ feeling. Its use is widespread, has cultural and customary importance and is particularly prevalent among men in the Solomons. Without getting into the nitty-gritty of dental sciences, the main consequences of this habit are red-stained smiles, worn down dentition, teeth which are tricky to take out and a susceptibility to mouth cancer.

Our week in Auki gave the local team opportunity to identify two needs from our JCU group. One, to complete a school screening program for 6 and 12 year old children in the remote villages to assist with planning and funding. And two, if the Bank of Queensland Specialist Future Focus Grant Fund can be used to provide two new highspeed drill handpieces. This equipment will significantly improve the quality of dental care being provided in this region.

Crossing to the other side... Our journey continued from here, on a long 4WD ride to the east coast of Malaita. We decided to take the overland journey to experience the barriers and difficulties people endure to reach healthcare in Auki. This ride saw us traversing the high mountain range dotted with small villages, clear-running streams and fruit trees as far as the eye can see.

After being bogged a number of times, we arrived at an unsuspecting jetty….a few big rocks sticking out into the water. Here we were met by a 16-foot banana boat with a 40HP, which would be our primary mode of transport for the next few weeks.

After loading the 50kg of dental equipment we were carrying, the boat carved through the glassy water towards the village of Atoifi. The regional hospital stands proud on a grassy hill in Atoifi, like something out of a travel magazine. After dropping off the gear, we headed to Gala Island, our home for the next 3 weeks. Windswept and ocean-splashed would be the new normal refreshing feeling we felt on our ‘commute’ everyday to work. The boat navigated its way through a small channel that snaked through the mangroves to an open lagoon. Our home was amazing! A thatched house with large undercover deck would be our sanctuary for the next 3 weeks. With no internet and a little bit of solar power, it was actually like a retreat.

Our clinical work in East Kwaio was rewarding but busy as we are the only dental services to the region each year. Each day we would see up to 35 patients, almost always with long-standing toothaches. The stoicism of local people was impressive, with people waiting months to see our dental team for relief of pain. Most teeth required extraction and the people displayed and indescribable appreciation for the help we provided.

Beyond clinical service, we visited four schools in the region to promote oral health and complete the screening as requested. One of the schools we visited was the first in the region to have running water, providing the perfect opportunity for toothbrushing by the pupils before school. This really highlighted not only the barriers to accessing health care, but reiterated the importance of the upstream, social determinants of health. We had the pleasure of travelling to school with the kids; first in a dugout canoe, then a short walk leaping between boulders, followed by a long, narrow balance-beam boardwalk through the mangroves.

Reflections... Perhaps the most eye-opening aspect of the trip was the cultural immersion experience we were privy to. We stayed with and became part of a local family. Associated with this honour, there were a number of responsibilities, including understanding and adhering to the village hierarchy and dynamic. Each day, a smorgasbord of local foods was prepared by local village women, fresh from their carefully maintained gardens. Fresh fish and a delicious variety of vegetables cooked over the fire were our daily staples. Our morning wake up was with the boat ride to Atoifi each morning in lieu of no coffee.

It wasn’t all work and no play. Our morning routine included meditation and yoga on the beach to greet the sunrise each day. Whereas swimming, snorkelling, spearfishing, playing cards or lounging in the hammock comprised our afternoons. On the boat we voyaged to deserted islands on our weekends. Some days we were joined by dolphins racing the boat. One of our trips was joined by members from the Australian High Commission who dabbled in fishing, snorkelling and drinking coconuts after our key diplomatic work together was done.

This incredible island immersion was genuinely life changing! Although we have given our time and skill to these appreciative people, we believe we have taken so much more away from this trip. We have a better understanding of health in low-resource settings, local customs, the Pijin language and the social determinants of health. It has certainly confirmed this is the first of many volunteer trips for us in the future.

Valentyne: Valentyne worked at a tavern his whole life where an old bard would sing songs of their adventuring party and that inspired him to go and do some adventuring of his own

Thavaroth: Thavaroth was kicked out of his tribe, and he needs to prove himself to get back in

Mies: Mies quit the city watch because of corruption, and she took up questing as her new job

Jasper: Someone stole something important from him, and he needs to find it for fear they'll destroy it

Leolorn: Leolorn's friend got super drunk and stumbled into a random teleportation circle and they were the only sober one at the party so they need to go find them

Thirel: Thirel decided to take up adventuring to cure his boredom

Mornir: Mornir wants to perform in as many towns as possible to break the record of a fellow bard

Eklech: Eklech's king sent them on a mission to find a magical amulet

Zonros: Zonros works with the crew of a merchant ship that he does item runs for

Cliff: Adventuring runs in Cliff's family. Everyone is expected to complete one quest in their lives, and this is his

Emrack: Someone kicked Emrack out of his cave, so he needs a new one

Albert: Albert's employer, a princess, is writing a book about the world and different cultures, and she needs a first hand account

Arthur: Arthur collects a certain object and he travel across the land to find it

Dovhareth: Dovhareth is a folk hero who had an accident that rendered him bedridden. He now works to make himself as great as he once was

Zoggu: Zoggu wants to prove an arrogant bard who told an intentionally incorrect story in his tavern wrong by bringing them the evidence himself

Onyx: Onyx just really wants to meet a real dragon

Hawk: Hawk inherited a strange spyglass when his friend died, now they're on a quest to figure out why. (The Spyglass is made out of a unicorn's horn, and that unicorn is his patron now)

Carrila: Carrila's noble parents sent her on a quest to find a magic potion to heal their ailing subjects

Morarsh: Morarsh travels near and far in search of adventure, in an attempt to prove to their town that he's not a coward.

Erkarth: Erkarth came along on the adventure as protection for a noble

Garrark: Garrark is a potion maker who's on a search for rare ingredients

Kaim: Kaim is a monster hunter, and he has a list of ‘monsters’ that he's heard about and which may or may not be real or possibly being confused for other, entirely real monsters, and he's gonna find out which is the truth

Az: Az is a Druid searching for the strongest source of natural magic in the world

Tenkon: Tenkon had a friend that went missing, he's on a search to find what happened to them

Dyros: Dyros has always been really craving an adventure as an escape from his stressful life as a nobleman.
