I feel like a lot of people don’t realize how important it is for people to see ships like lumity and huntlow coming from a brand like disney that’s known for having ships that really is known to enforce a lot of beauty standards on to kids. 

lumity is definitely not “on brand” with disney but i feel like so much of the appeal in it comes from that fact. luz doesn’t fit disneys standards for an attractive girl at all. (she is very pretty tho don’t get me wrong) whereas amity is definitely seen by a lot of fans to be very attractive and i think that makes the ship even more powerful. luz doesn’t fall for amity first, amity falls for luz. 

i don’t think i can even explain how much this meant to me as a poc. like omg the hot gay witch that everyone thinks is super hot falls for the dorky brown girl??? that alone makes me love the ship 1000x more. its amazing that kids get to grow up with a ship like that that really flips tropes and cliches and is still so fun and cute to watch. it really teaches young bisexuals and pocs that; hey! you can totally find a super loving healthy relationship where the other person respects you :) ive mentioned in the past that i used to feel really self conscious of my lips but luz helped my overcome that. it’s a small but very important thing to me. i also used to always be worried about how partners would take me being bi, again luz was so helpful in overcoming that fear. 

huntlow is another ship that i feel is incredibly important for reasons similar to lumity. a lot of people are probably going to hate me for saying that lmao but idk i still think it’s very likely to become canon. again like lumity the character the fandom finds to be the most attractive falls first

some people say that willow fell first but I feel like given the fact that hunters been the only one who blushes a lot more people are gonna go “oh hunter likes willow” rather than “willow likes hunter” (i mean i think willow likes hunter but it’s not as obvious so im not gonna talk about that aspect of this ship and it’s not relevant to the point im trying to get across.) 

a lot of people have also said that huntlow parallels lumity in how lot in how their interactions are written and i really agree with that. hunter has from the minute his face was revealed always been seen as attractive by the fandom. i feel like people only really started saying the same about willow when hunter started showing signs of having a crush on her. 

willow like luz isn’t the conventionally attractive disney princess type. she’s larger, east asian, and more quiet. still through hunters perspective we’re able to see these aspects of her along with how she can still be confident and an incredibly powerful witch. 

just like with lumity the show allows people to stop and be like huh luz is actually really pretty and super cute or huh willow is actually really gorgeous and talented. we’re able to see these characters from the perspective of the people who are in love with them. 

at first amity and hunter both don’t really understand why willow and luz are the way they are. hunter and amity have been raised with the perspective of having to be better than everyone all the time so when they meet luz and willow - two very powerful witches - they dont understand why they’re approaching things with the perspective they have. but slowly they’re able to see a different side of them which in turn allows the viewer to also understand luz and willow more. 

we see hunter and amity have this moment of realization; huh it’s actually okay to let people see a more friendly side of myself that’s more open with people and that doesn’t take anything away from how powerful i have the capability of being. 

I think that just the fact alone that luz is able bring out the best side of amity and the fact that willow is able to bring out the best side of hunter is really cute and admirable. these two standoffish teens with self hatred issues are just are suddenly super soft around these two super sweet cute girls. idk i just really like these two ships.

So some of my favourite western animations of all time include

1) Tangled

Why do I love it so much? Well it has been my absolute comfort movie since I was like 10 years old and watched this movie in theatres with my older sister. I also highly relate to Rapunzel, both due to her personality and her experiences with Mother Gothel. Also to this day I fully stand by the believe that Flynn/Eugene and Rapunzel’s relationship is the single most romantic and beautifully written Disney couple in this studio’s entire history. Lastly: THE ANIMATION IS GORGEOUS! And I think few people understand just how ground breaking this movie was in terms if 3D animation as back then animating hair, and most importantly that amount of hair that Rapunzel has, was a nightmare to animate in 3D, so the Studio had to essentially come up with an entirely new animation program specifically for the protagonist’s hair to move around in a natural way.

2) Lego Monkie Kid

Created by the Australian Studio Flying Bark Productions, the same Studio behind Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, this show means EVERYTHING to me. Because one thing rarely talk about on Tumblr: I am OBSESSED with Mythology. Greek Mythology, Roman, Mythology, Yoruba Mythology, Chinese Mythology, Norse Mythology etc. you name it. Like my bookshelf is nothing but Manga, history books and an astronomical amount of mythology and fairytale books. The show follows MK a hyper and optimistic boy as he is chosen to be the Monkey King Sun Wukong’s successor and learning to be a hero. So as you may have gathered this show is not only inspired by chinese mythology but essentially it’s equivalent of what Percy Jackson is to Greek Mythology. What I adore the most about this show are its characters and the GORGEOUS ANIMATION! I swear the fighting animation especially in this cartoon is smoother than butter!

3) The Owl House

Aka "What if Harry Potter was not written by a biggot”. If you’ve seen the pinned post on my blog, you know that Lumity is one of my absolute favourite sapphic ships. But honestly this ship is only the peak of the iceberg for why i adore this show. The beautiful artstyle, Luz’s character arc over the course of the show, EDA SIMPLY EXISTING AND BEING FANTASTIC, the beautiful world building and magic system, Emperor Beloz being an absolute irredeemable asshole in the most entertaining and bone chilling way. Srsly if you can dear Anon, give this show a watch.

4) Infinity Train

An Anthology Series who up until recently you could watch on Max HBO. This show is both delightfully funny and absolutely gut-wrenching and dark. The show essentially follows on a new set of characters each season who all end up getting trapped on a train with an infinite number of cars and they cannot leave the train until they essentially come to terms with and/or face some sort of trauma or other psychological issue they may be struggling with.

And as you may have guessed those themes of working through psychological issues is something that my mentally ill ass highly relates to. Not to mention these are some of the most well handled depictions of mental illnesses in animation i have seen in years. Especially given the show was originally targeted towards children and teenagers. I cannot recommend this show enough.

5) Nimona & Over the Garden Wall

I know you asked for only Top 5 Favourite western Animations but I seriously could not decide which one I prefered so they gotta share the spot. Hope you don’t mind 😊.

Starting with Nimona: I mean what else is there to say about Nimona that has not been said before? Fantastic and unique world building? Check. Absolute comedy gold? Check. Openly Queer characters? Check. Said characters also being absolutely loveable? Check. A heartfelt message for both adults and children? CHECK. Seriously this movie is just gorgeous and on Youtube FOR FREE! Like there is nothing stopping you from watching it right this instant.

Now onto Over the Garden Wall: I come from a country where we don’t typically celebrate Halloween. So due to a lack of direct cultural ties to Halloween I never truly had any super strong interest in Halloween movies and never had the urge around October to bundle up in a blanket and watch those classic Halloween movies and shows, like some of my friends do. The most I did was carve pumpkins with my sister and drink hot cocoa cuz it’s genuinly fun. Until this Mini Series came along. The atmosphere just absolutely perfectly manages to capsulate the feeling of autumn and the eeriness of that season. Far more than any other Halloween Classic in my humble opinion. Also again I’m a huge mythology Nerd and this show is basically Dante’s Inferno for children in very weird way. But yes ever since this show had come out I instantly rewatch it the second the leaves start to fall outside.

Fandom Dissection: The Owl House

Warning: This post will contain spoilers for The Owl House

The Basics:

The Owl House is a Disney Channel cartoon that began airing in 2020, and just recently finished.

The story follows Luz Noceda, a human girl obsessed with magic who discovers a portal to The Demon Realm. There she meets Eda The Owl Lady, a wild witch as well as someone hiding from The Emperor’s Coven. She also meets King, the adorable self proclaimed “King of Demons”. Luz decides to stay in The Demon Realm so she can learn magic.

The show became immensely popular for various reasons. These include the characters, writing, animation, music, world-building and LGBT representation. However, these things do not solely build a fandom. So let’s apply my Six Elements to this show.

1. Recognizable Art style/Aesthetic:

The Owl House has a very recognizable aesthetic, very much playing into the fantasy genre while also having it’s own spin. It is more monstrous and macabre then your average fantasy school story but that’s part of the charm. And despite that, the imagery and backgrounds are surprisingly gorgeous.

In regards to character designs, many of the residents of The Demon Realm look like normal humans, save for the pointy ears. However some characters like Boscha inexplicably have more monstrous features. This makes the options for oc designs pretty expansive.

2. Faction System:

The Owl House has its own Faction System, that being The Covens. These nine forms of magic are a major element of the shows world building. The nine types of magic are: Abomination, Bard, Beast Keeping, Construction, Healing, Illusion, Oracle, Plant and Potions. Despite the coven system being criticized in the show, I often see fans associate themselves with one or multiple of the nine types of magic. The system is very much built to use as a jumping off point for a self insert or sona. This system also is interesting from a world building perspective.

3. World Building:

Speaking of world building, The Owl House has quite a bit of interesting world building. The Boiling Isles is a world that many people are fascinated with. The world is fascinating and filled with mysteries. The rules are set up and correlate with the story in an interesting way. The world and characters are also fit for many different types of AUs. Wholesome AUs, angsty AUs, or both.

4. Theories and Headcanons:

Like many modern cartoons, The Owl House had a strong theory following. It set up interesting mysteries about the lore of The Boiling Isles, Hunter’s Origins, Belos’s plan and The Collector as a whole. All of which were heavily speculated on in the fandom. The series is also perfect for headcanons. The characters are so expansive and likable, and due to many plot threads being cut by the shortened series, there’s room for fanon to step in where canon was unable to be fully developed.

5. Shipping:

Many people jumped on this show as a result of the viral news of Luz being canonically Bi, Amity being canonically a lesbian, and the possibility that they might get together being revealed near the end of Season One. This was when the show really became well known. And as such, Lumity (Luz X Amity) became the most talked about element of the show.

However there are other ships that heavily impact the fandom. The two big ones being Raeda (Raine X Eda) and Huntlow (Hunter X Willow), sometimes called Winter.

These three ships make up the bulk of shipping content for The Owl House, however some rarepairs exist like Alador X Darius. 6. Tumblr Sexyman:

Speaking of Alador and Darius, they are the two who fit the tumblr sexyman mold the best. However there are also similar followings for Raine and Eda.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, The Owl House is a very special show. It is unlikely we will ever see a show like it again. Despite how much it was screwed over by Disney, the show managed to have a pretty satisfying finale. Plus it made huge steps in representation, with canonical same-gender couples, non-binary characters and even an aroace character. It was dark but funny, sweet but heartwrenching, it was truly something special. It makes sense why it gained such a massive following.

ok aside from like my mental health the panel. the six minute clip. -Luz makes a powerpoint coming out as bi to her mom and all her friends throw confetti -Hunter has a panic attack and tries to cut his own hair but Willow sees and does it for him -Gus is happy about human things -They all go in the rain.  Lumity dance in the rain and its fucking gorgeous. -Halloween episode -Luz tries to apologize to her mom and she just hugs her and says theyll talk about it later and everyone’s health and safety is more important right now -They all get ADORABLE makeovers. They’re so fucking cute.  -They turn the shack into kind of a clubhouse -They all draw pictures of their parents and hang them up on the wall -All the concept art of every single character has them smiling. Except Luz. She is sad in EVERY SINGLE PICTURE. There’s so much more but my brain is tired from all the sobbing so that’s it for now.  I’m sure you’ve all seen the clip by now, but. This is what I remember from it from the panel. It was amazing.

Boscha growled as she saw them walk into the part. Of course they had to show up. They had to ruin everything, even her fucking college years. Was humiliating her back in high school not enough? She'd just ignore them and move on with her night. She was the star after all and she'd just drown the memory of them out of her mind. One round of Jose Quervo later.

Boscha tried to ignore that the crowd was now split in its attention. Most were still with her but there were murmers. Whispers. Not everyone had noticed Miss Glyph was back in town after all. It was enough to make her want to gag.

The music had her humming along as she focused on her teammates who were there with her to celebrate the new school year and how they were going to utterly DOMINATE anyone who tried to compete against them. At least until one of them asked if there was anyone she thought might be good for the team. Boscha was trying not to think about Miss Aboma-bitch after all. Let alone better times with her.

Skara noticed Boscha's mood at this point. Boscha was glad the two were friends again but she didn't want anyone comforting her about 'Lumity' showing up. God, how were they so lame as to call themselves by their own fucking ship name, something she'd only learned ten minutes ago. And no, she didn't want to dance to forget about it.

Amity bit her lip as she saw Boscha step onto the dance floor. Boscha she'd been trying to ignore that her old 'friend' was here too but it was hard to now. Not when she was in a short, tight black dress that showed off both her hips and chest but also hid nothing when it came to her muscles. Not that she cared about-

-whether or not she could have her head squished like a watermelon. Didn't like watching Boscha getting all to risque with her dancing with Skara. Nothing inappropriate but the lifts, dips and grinding of their bodies made her bite her lip. Luz had two left feet after all, not that it stopped Luz from ever dancing.

She finally grabbed Luz's arm and dragged her onto the dance floor. She was feeling frisky and didn't care if Boscha was there. Who knows, she might even prove to not have enough a stick up her ass to be able to share the floor with them. Maybe even give her a spin?

Luz became bright red as arms made of steel almost laid her against the ground. She remembered stumbling and almost falling before being caught. Now three drop dead gorgeous eyes looked at her. Or, well, two of them. The third was winking as the strong girl whispered, "Careful. You might bump into trouble."

Luz glanced at Boscha's lips for a moment. She was wearing hot red lipstick and it looked good. Really good. Like need a taste good. Honestly, everything about how Boscha looked, especially with her hair down as her hair tie had been discard long ago now, was turning her mind to mush. And now she was getting closer for some reason.

"BOSCHA!" Luz barely registered the scream as her head spin from the deep kiss. She knew she wanted another one but she probably shouldn't. Not now that Amity was there. Maybe they could all dance together? Oh, there was the abomination fist and yet Boscha just kept a tight grip on Luz as they both moved towards Amity. Despite her anger, Amity's face somehow turned even more red as Boscha cupped her cheek.

Boscha yawned as she sat up in bed. Her head was pounding and furious at her normal routine of getting up early for a work out. She remembered bits and pieces of last night. Pounding back shot after shot to forget about the dumbasses who crashed her sororities' party. The pretty, tasty, submissive... How would she know those...

Boscha blinked a few times as she glanced down and became very aware of the two women in bed with her. The two annoying, beautiful, infuriating, delightful, rude and silly women. Her first instinct was to light them on fire but then she licked her lips where she could still taste them.

And, well, it tasted a hell of a lot better than Jose Quervo and a peace offering of a potion witch's hangover cure for each of them was enough to start something awkward but that they all were quite happy to have drunkenly stumbled into.

This is late but I got distracted by way too many fanart and liking them all

It happened I finally watched a satisfying finale more satisfying then Steven universe finale that I loved so much thank you so much Dana and everyone who worked on this show it was amazing and wonderful!

Spoilers underneath

Things I love are the lumity ,huntlow ,and reada moments they are all canon. The take this sucka ,line luz said the thing ! while she finishes belos. 

 I loved this was more about Luz ,eda ,and king and their found family this is their story they are the main characters ! And them using the power of found family to defeat belos that’s how I saw it .  I loved the collector really I do love his development and it’s just he didn’t understand death and mortality cause he’s a child whose immortal . Oh and Luz awesome titan power up form she looked so awesome! belos death was satisfying He deserved to go that way.

I love everyone’s time skip design eda is the headmaster love that it just fits so much and of course she’d have hook ,king learning his own glyph magic so cute .

I cried at Luz death scene I really thought for a moment Dana would kill her off ,even though I went through this with Anne in Amphibia and should have known better ,dame that was a good one. I love the amazing score it was all just so well done the most satisfying animated finale I’ve seen oh and the finale group BYEE I love how they brought that back that way it was the best send off the this beautiful show!

 I know it was shortened and they couldn’t put everything they wanted to do but with what much time they had they did more then their best I’m satisfied and I can’t understand anymore who is disappointed by that you knew it was shortened you have to understand why they didn’t put more or just what wanted this show us full of actual love and Great writing ,amazing acting ,wonderful gorgeous animation and art. how can you not feel satisfied I know you want more and maybe there’ll be comic stories they can do only if Disney gives all the rights of the characters and story back to Dana she deserves it more then them!

Alright, so I don't know what you mean by "favorite" or what you want for headcanons, so I'm just gonna do all the ones I can think of under the Read More!

So, favorite ship?

Lumity and Raeda. These ships give me LIFE! Luz and Amity are so adorable and sweet and I love them! Eda and Raine doing the Friends to Lovers to Sad Ex's back to Friends and Will They Won't They is so beautiful! And I love that they're showing Eda and Raine, older and queer people, being able to be in love and develop a romantic relationship. It's so important to see that kind of thing!!

Favorite characters all together?

Philip/Belos, Love me my British villains that I can project my daddy issues onto /j

Hunter, My sweet baby boy who I love and adore.

Raine/Darius, They're in a tie cause I love them both so much, they hold my heart.

Regular ship headcanons

Luz and Amity are blushing messes when they hold hands or kiss, but sometimes on of them get into a bout of confidence and will flirt horribly to make the other blush. It's usually Amity, but when Luz does it she loves to sweet talk Amity is Spanish.

Raine serenades Eda whenever they get the chance. And not just serious "I adore you" songs but silly "I asked you to do the laundry an hour ago, go do it or no snuggles" songs!

Regular fav character headcanons

Belos/Philip slept with a teddy bear till he went to the boiling isles, and no longer had it. Caleb made him a new one, and despite it all, Belos/Philip still has it and sometimes when he's feeling sentimental he'll bring it out and hug it.

Hunter is scared of thunder and always has been. He gets really scared and tried to hide in a quiet and warm spot.

Raine is beloved by their former student back when they were a teacher for the Bard Coven.

Darius's hair is actually his palisman, similar to what Bump does. Only Darius does it because it keeps his natural hair looking healthy and gorgeous, and because his palisman just likes to be up there.

First Night in the Same Room

It's the hex squad's first night in the human realm. They had gotten stranded there while fleeing from the Collector. Yet despite that, Amity can't help but worry about what is expected of her. As she is in a new relationship, yet has to share a room with her girlfriend. She doesn't want to mess this up.

Notes: It's hard to believe this is my first Lumity-focused fic. I've had this idea for a while, just hadn't gotten around to writing it yet. This may have inspired more Huntlow fluff and Dadrius fatherly fluff as well.

There was a lot Amity could be thinking about during her first night sleeping in the human realm. This was a different world after all. And she was away from her family. Not knowing what the fate was for any of them. The Collector was unpredictable and very powerful. It didn’t seem good whatever it was. Yet, the thing she would rather think about right then as she lay awake on the cot pulled over for her, was Luz.

That was, this was the first time she was sleeping in a room that Luz was also sleeping in. Her girlfriend. Who was sleeping in her own bed of course. But still. Amity could hear the quiet puffs of air as her girlfriend slept. A side to her Amity hadn’t heard before. On the other side of the room. Well, not completely. Amity was in the middle of the room herself. But still.

Not to mention this was Luz’s house. And Luz’s mom didn’t know they were dating when placing them both in the same room. Oh gosh, would she get mad at Amity? Think she was being mischievous? But it would seem more suspicious if Amity had protested staying in the shared room anyways. Oh gosh, what if she seemed ungrateful? That was the last thing she wanted. She wanted to make a good impression on her first girlfriend’s mom.

Amity was comfortable around Luz and loved dating her. But this felt different somehow. She wasn’t sure what she was expected to do here.

Despite herself, Amity shifted to her side to face the direction of Luz’s bed. She couldn’t see much of Luz from where she was with her cot on the ground though. Just the small rising and falling of the sheets as she breathed in her sleep.

Amity wondered if Luz looked peaceful as she slept. She hoped Luz did. Her girlfriend could use some peace after everything going on back at the isles.

Was it weird that Amity wanted to see for herself? She was sure Luz would be just as gorgeous sleep rumbled.

Amity shook her head and shifted to face the ceiling again with a sigh. It would be weird to watch her girlfriend. Especially where they were with dating right now. It was a new thing for both of them, and still scary at times. Even if she was happy with her.

Yet she had the desire to someday grow comfortable enough to lean against each other all sleepy. Maybe cuddle and fall asleep together. It sounded nice. And Luz had a nice warm and comforting touch even in the little touches they shared.

Amity heard a yawn and turned back to face Luz’s bed. Luz had shifted closer to the edge of her own bed, and was lying on her side to face Amity. Luz gave her a sleepy smile.

“Morning, sweet potato,” Luz said quietly.

Amity blushed because of course she did, and giggled.

“Hey, my batata. Sorry, did I wake you? It’s still early. I was trying to be quiet,” Amity said, also quiet.

Luz shook her head.

“No, I don’t think so. I’m a light sleeper anyways. Why are you up?”

Amity sighed and shrugged her shoulders.

“I don’t know. I guess it could be everything,” Amity said with a small hand flourish.

Luz frowned and nodded. “I understand. You’re probably not the only one who had trouble sleeping.”

Then after a moment, she shot Amity a small smile.

“Would you like a goodnight kiss?” Luz asked.

Amity covered her mouth to keep from laughing too loud. Then she took a breath before saying,

“I’m uh, not asking for that,” Amity wouldn’t meet Luz’s eyes, but couldn’t keep from smiling. She heard a shift of sheets as Luz carefully got up. Then her girlfriend was kneeling next to her bed.

“I know. I wanted to.”

Amity looked up shyly. Luz started to fidget with her hair nervously.

“I mean uh, if that’s okay of course,” Luz said, “I don’t want to-“

Amity sat up and cut her off with a peck to the cheek. Luz and Amity just stared at each other for a moment. Amity was sure they were both blushing.

“It’s ok,” Amity croaked out. “I uh don’t mind. I mean clearly,” Amity said with a gesture, giggling a bit.

After a moment Luz giggled as well and then leaned over to peck a kiss on Amity’s cheek.

“Try and get some rest, sweet potato,” Luz murmured.

Amity nodded and slipped back into her blankets.

“You too, my batata,” She said with a yawn. Amity heard soft footsteps and then a rustle as Luz got back into her own bed.

She sighed and smiled a little as her eyelids drooped. This seemed okay. Everything would be okay.

*Later after Willow learns about the goodnight cheek kisses*

“…hm…I wonder if Hunter would want goodnight kisses as well.”

- Rosemary is the dumbass gay of the group and I love her for it

- so many good quotes

- some of the acting sounds like they recorded the VAs separately and then stitched them ever so slightly too close to one another but I don’t really mind it? It’s closer to how I find people talking irl so it’s kinda fun to see that

- with my mom being sick now, but her also kinda being one of the villains in my life, the scene where Lavender gets taken and knowing where she ends after in the series hits a bit harder

- istg the acting isn’t as terrible as people say it is. Maybe a couple more passes, but given how crunched everything was I’m willing to overlook it to some degree

- I forgot Rosemary says “WAUGH!”

- Anise and Aloe are just Lumity

- I don’t even get why people were getting hissy over Rosemary being slightly thicker than other character models

- I like how Rose and Sage aren’t perfect friends in the beginning, like Rose is kinda pushy and Sage is a bit reclusive but it’s like what I liked in LWA where the characters are given room to grow

- also I appreciate the POC chatacters not really being given stereotyped/caricatured designs

- the first encounter with Thyme is so silly. Poor girl just wants to finish her protagonist quests

- Sage has a little bit of the tism and I relate.
