I got paid for my pottery! For the first time! I wound up with $80 from the 3 things that sold at the exhibition, and it feels appropriate to spend it on something pottery related.
Ok so before everyone immediately clicks on gold:
Fancy tool would be exclusively for carving pottery, a thing I love to do. There's not really a great cheaper option here BUT the fancy tool would not do any other jobs. Single purpose but VERY good at that purpose
Less fancy tools would probably be a nice brush or two and a trimming tool, would make the process of making pots a little smoother. Might be slightly multi functional ie you can also carve with some trimming tools, but not as well as with the really fancy tool
New glazes are always universally fun but I also did just get 2 new glazes when I bought clay recently and I haven't had a chance to test them yet so I don't know if now is the right time?
Adding gold to pieces sounds like amazing fun BUT I would have a lot of learning to do bc you have to fire it at a different temperature to normal glazes etc so I'd have to book out the club kiln for my own pieces, would be so much fun but again I don't know if now is the right time?
(Disclaimer I am absolutely not committing to doing whatever the top answer is. But help me decide.)

Apparently I only took a quick video on insta of the owl bowl pre-firing, so here's a screenshot of that to show the level of contrast pre-firing:
Tumblr media
Some initial black stoneware thoughts (I'm using PSH 540i) - it fired up MUCH darker than I was expecting, which is great to know for the future, but did lead to some duller-than expected results.
From top to bottom:
Mothpals - I decided to just fire these with underglaze & no clear glaze overtop, which is an effect I like, but I wish the yellow UG had fired brighter. Most of the other colours were great, though!
Ungulate - YES! I love how cosy this guy looks & the glazes on its body (Amaco cacao matte shino) & horns (Coyote pistachio shino) didn't do any weird bubbling (none of my glazes-on-black clay had major issues - just a few tiny bubbles on some!).
Bowl - here's a bummer one. I was hoping for a subtle design when I did this, but the black-underglaze-on-black-clay fired up WAY more subtle than I'd expected, a.k.a. the owls are basically invisible. Oh well! [Alanis voice] You live/you learn!
& beyond the black clay (feat. a black clay spinx, tho)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also had some issues with my Amaco tourmaline glaze this firing & I'm not sure whether it was my friend's new firing schedule or that the glaze wasn't on thickly enough. We're going to fire some test tiles to check!
For reference, this is what that glaze looked like last time I used it (top - artificial light, bottom - sunlight) - a much richer & deeper colour:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm still happy with these sculptures (most are getting some gold lustre to add some of the missing pizazz) & am excited to finally do test tiles (I've been meaning to for ages, but keep getting caught up in sculpting beafts instead)!
Pottery: an alchemical adventure!!

Tumblers ❤️
I’ve been experimenting with textures and angled cuts, and tumblers are relatively simple forms to experiment with. I used a loop tool for the fluting and titanium-fused trimming Xiem tools for the angled cuts. So far the titanium-fused tools are holding up extremely well, especially as I like to throw with grogged clay, no matter how fine. My pitiful throwing sponge died a long time ago… 🪦
Testing glaze combinations has been both extremely frustrating and rewarding, sometimes with multiple refires or reglazing. These three tumblers came out lovely on the first try, and I thought the colours looked so cute together I had to take them stacked. My time at the Leach Pottery has instilled in me a love for iron breaking over texture that I can’t give up now.
Tumbler 1: Amaco Arctic Blue 2x over Iron Lustre 2x
Tumbler 2: Botz Beige Granite 2x body, Sand Granite 2x triangles, tape-resist method
Tumbler 3: Amaco Seaweed 2x over Honey Flux 2x
Fired to 1200C, no hold.

detail of the glaze on the yellow one
these were made in the (czech) interwar period (i asked megan and she said i can call this period first republic), the pottery is from a mould and they were hand painted by workers. the ones that i like have very simple two color patterns and my favorite ones are in very high deco forms or shapes that were popular in czech art glass (like a fan vase). they’re also quite small. black and yellow is one of my favorite color combinations which is what drew me to this at first, but what i really love is that the black is a flat finish on the lustre glaze. i didn’t like lustreware before because i had never seen it applied like that. i still have apprehensions about having more than one or two lustre pieces so we’ll see but they catch light amazingly on shelves and in low light, better than glass.
Tumblr media
i can’t remember if i bought the orange one before or after i saw the yellow one. i don’t like the form as much but i love orange in my living room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
detail to show how the hand painting looks. it’s amazing—like a drawing.
well if you can believe it, i was christmas thrifting yesterday and i found these
Tumblr media
three is such an odd number of candlesticks! the form is so odd and larval. but together you can see the variation in the painting—incredible!
great area of collecting for a postmodernist girlie

you know i’d cut my heart out
if it meant you’d be okay
i’ll substitute your missing pieces
stitch you together with the scraps
skin grafts made of desperation
you told me once of an old tradition
of repairing pottery with gold
is it more beautiful to be healed than whole?
is the gold selfish to outshine the clay?
i’d rather stay dull and let you glow
i cut my hand on your shattered pieces
i watch my blood drip, red against the white
my blood lacks lustre but i’ll use it anyway
cement between your shards of being
i’d bleed myself dry
you left me as a pile of scraps
what useful parts of me you found
torn away and stitched into you
the gold i had to hold myself together
drained in an endless drip feed
all you leave me with is a hollowness
and ribbons of skin and bone and blood
a gaping hole between my ribs
exposing the last left gilded bone
carved into which is your name

DRAGONSPAWN - Prologue

"You are unharmed?" The Targaryen girl smiled at him and opened her wooden chest, reveling red stone within it. "Thraxata", she spoke. "I was, but she saved me. She gave me her heart." Viserys/Visenya(OC)

"She was a gordian shape of dazzling hue,
Vermilion-spotted, golden, green, and blue;
Striped like a zebra, freckled like a pard,
Eyed like a peacock, and all crimson barr’d;
And full of silver moons, that, as she breathed,
Dissolv’d, or brighter shone, or interwreathed
Their lustres with the gloomier tapestries-
So rainbow-sided, touch’d with miseries,
She seem’d, at once, some penanced lady elf,
Some demon’s mistress, or the demon’s self.
Upon her crest she wore a wannish fire
Sprinkled with stars, like Ariadne’s tiar:
Her head was serpent, but ah, bitter-sweet!
She had a woman’s mouth with all its pearls complete:
And for her eyes: what could such eyes do there
But weep, and weep, that they were born so fair?"

Prologue
Tumblr media
Visenya died once.
It wasn't a romantic kind of death that innocent maidens must endure. There were no knights fighting for her honor or minstrels to sing of her valor after the deed was done. No mother's screams begging for her daughter's life. There were only lions with their claws ripping open a one-year-old girl. She didn't fight it. How could she? Her dragon fires have not yet been set ablaze. She was too young. Too weak. So lions tore out her heart, just like Tywin ordered them to do. He should be proud of them. Visenya often thought whenever she remembered. They did a good job. But it was pain that she remembers the most, not the betrayal of Lannister Lord. And what pain it was… She couldn't breathe, she couldn't see, she couldn't die. The killers already left her mother's chambers whispering 'dragonspawn' under their breaths. Visenya was left alone. A one-year-old girl, laying in her own blood with no heart in her chest. Yet she didn't cry. Visenya never cried. Not even when she came out of her mother's belly. She only closed her eyes and silently gasped for air. Then she heard it. A voice rasping at her. "Thraxata.", it said. "Thraxata, Thraxata, Thraxata…" The voice didn't stop. It continued its tune over and over again. When all sounds started to fade away the voice remained repeating that alien word over and over again.
Warmth came suddenly. Her little body was filled with liquid flames once more and she could feel her beating chambers loudly pounding in her head. Visenya died once but was reborn by a red stone in a wooden chest in the corner of the room.
By the time she was found by Targaryen loyalists, she was wide awake and alive. Thanking the gods on sparing princess' life, they smuggled her, and her wooden chest, to the Dragonstone.
The rest of her life passed in a quick haze. Sounds of her younger sister's sobbing, her older brother's yelling, expensive pottery hitting the walls and the ground… It always sounded the same to her. Only noise, nothing more. Daenerys was a gentle hearted girl born in a storm. A paper dragon with no wings, always helplessly thrashing against reality, breaking in the slight breeze. Closing herself in forever hopeless search to find that house with the red door. Visenya knew very well that her sister will never see them again because there was no red door to begin with. From the moment she opened her eyes she was fighting for her life, and she only had one chance. Like a true dragon, she took it and never looked back. She can't protect her sweet sister for the world, their dragon-slaying enemies, their brother. She wouldn't try, even if she knew how. Daenerys must learn to fly on her own, or she will crash and there will be no one there to catch her when she falls.
Visenya's heart was gone that night Lannisters took it out, and she will never forget what they did.
When Illyrio Mopatis asked the princess what she wished as a gift for her fourteenth name day, Visenya asked for a mirror. She never had one of her own and she believed every girl deserves to have one.
Looking her reflection now in that perfectly polished gift, she didn't regret her wish. Amethyst colored eyes appeared brighter in the room as mirror's frames were caught in dragon’s claws. Their bodies dance on the edges in flames and silver. Visenya never saw anything like it before. A smile found its way in the corner of her mouth. She was happy.
As she removed few strands of loose hair from her face, she turned around and looked at the wooden chest at the end of her bed. It was closed, same as always. Only a few people knew what was in there, but they never managed to open it. It was like the red stone was protecting itself. When she suggested this to her brother, Viserys only laughed saying that she is just a stupid little girl and that dead things are just that. Dead. Visenya agreed. She was just a stupid little girl, but she bit her tongue at the rest of the statement. Her red stone was not dead. If the nights were quite enough she could hear its voice calling out her name. Like a mother calling her child. "Targaryen madness," some would call it if she spoke of her secret. So, she never told anyone. Visenya loved her sister, she loved her brother. But she never told them what she hears and dreams. It was not the time for it.
Finally tearing her gaze from her wooden secret, Visenya turned away from the mirror and faced blue silken dress. Another gift for her name day. She had a same one from a suitor, a very foolish one. He was a merchant and Illyrio's friend. The same man came at the dinner as a guest and took a liking to older Targaryen girl, which pushed Viserys from his foul mood into a rage. The man never returned after that dinner. And the dress she received was burned. The next day she got a new one. "This one is better, dear sister. I've picked it myself." Her brother told her. She only smiled and kissed his cheek to keep his dragon rage at bay. Sometimes she was the only one who managed to do it.
Since Visenya could remember, Viserys was always possessive of her. He would often mention that she was born only for him. To be his sister and a lover. That the Seven made her just for him, just like he wished Them to make her.
And when he yelled, she understood. Sometimes she wanted to yell as well, to take back what the fat stag took. She wanted to burn them all in the inferno under her father's broken flag and watch them as they scream.
Visenya understood all too well.
Her small fingers traced the blue silk, feeling its softness. Beautiful. She smiled again. Carefully, a silver haired girl took it fully in her arms and pressed it next to her naked body. It fit her perfectly, bringing life to her eyes. Mirrors don't lie, after all. Or at least I hope not. Visenya thought to dress herself up. Dany must be ready by now. Khal is not known for his patience. Ever since Daenerys was sold to Khal Drogo by their brother, everybody was rushing everywhere. Most of the servants were uneasy about Dothraki horde roaming about. They called them barbarians, dirty and uncivilized. But they know how to fight. They are more than barbarians, Dothraki are killers. Killers who will kill our enemies and bring us home. And Dany will soon be one of them. Sweet Daenerys… Visenya cut off the trail of her last thought. She shouldn't pity her sister. She should be encouraging her. Khal will be good for her. Daenerys can't stay a child forever, and they need to return home to their people. Yes, her inner-self said convinced. Dany will get us an army. And then we can all go home together.
Purple eyes found its form one last time in the mirror before turning away towards the door. Mark of burning pride left wherever her shadow trailed. She was one of the last Targaryens. One of the last dragons and she will make everyone remember her. Visenya passed throughout the halls of her host's home like a ghost. She finally slowed down when she reached a place where Illyrio, her brother, and sister awaited Khal. And by the annoyed face Viserys wore she guessed he hasn't showed up yet. As soon as Illyrio heard her approach, he turned and offered her a wide grin showing fully his crooked yellow teeth. "You look lovely, princess."
"Indeed," Viserys suddenly said next to the bearded man. "She does. Come here." He beckoned her and Visenya obeyed silently. Cupping her face with his hands so she can't escape his gaze, Viserys spoke again, "You will stand behind me. I don't want barbarian's attention on you." His hold on her soft face tightened as a warning. It won't leave a bruise, but still, to Visenya it felt like a kiss.
"Of course," she quietly said. "I've promised Dany that I will be here with her, but I won't show myself to the Khal fully."
Viserys smiled, "Good." After kissing her quickly in the corner of her mouth, he let her go just in time when a sound of horses was heard. Illyrio hurried his large form forward to greet the Khal, and Visenya turned her attention towards her younger sibling. The girl looked terrified and breathtaking at the same time. "Be strong, sister. Our kind doesn't break. With his army, you will bring us home." Visenya tried to offer her comforting words, but it's hard to put them together for the time like this.
Daenerys bit her lip, "I will."
Visenya frowned at her sister's innocence. She will learn. Hurriedly she shifted herself behind her brother who was now nervously clutching the hilt of a sword as horsemen approached. Is this how all great things start? She wondered, Or it all started with that night when I died?
Maybe it doesn't matter.
Maybe we will return home after all…
Thraxata…

It is done and I'm in love, but........
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...it cracked.
I can't just leave it like this, it would break my heart. And with all the effort I've already put into it, it has to...you know...work. I'm not stopping now.
So...what happened. I wanted to use some gold lustre (or whatever it's called) on the lion heads and some other details. But it needs to be fired at a specific temperature. And since my teacher doesn't use gold and I only have one piece I wanted to use it on, I didn't have anywhere to fire it. So I looked online for people who work with it. I contacted some strangers and one lady was really sweet and said she'll help. So I bought 2 grams of gold for 50€🙈 borrowed a filtration mask from work and in october I'm taking the stein to the lady for gilding.
I already emailed a teacher from my first pottery course to help me with the crack on the bottom so wish me luck with that. I also wanted to use glass in those little holes on top of the handle, to resemble that legendary sword from previous post. But that didn't work out either, so my plan B is nail gel....😮‍💨
Whatever happens, I'm super happy with how it turned out. It looks amazing, even the hammered effect is visible.♥️
