the new inn, morpheus finds, feels like robert gadling. 

the essence of hob is everywhere, distilled into the bones of the place, the bricks, the floorboards, the foundation. morpheus can almost taste hob’s dreams, here, like the tannic echo of a strong black tea at the back of his throat. 

the other patrons have straggled home long since, yet he and hob remain in their customary spot by the large windows, until the hour grows later than late. 

“i wanted to do—things,” hob says, abruptly, “for you, in the seventeen hundreds. but you wouldn’t let me. you said it was too dangerous.”

hob’s centuries-old daydream clamors to morpheus through the heavy quiet of the empty pub. easy for him to pluck the familiar truth from just beneath hob’s surface: his wish to feel the fabric of dream’s trousers chafe his cheek, and dream's fist in his hair, and the weight of dream’s prick on his tongue.

the reverie brings with it a phantom of hob’s want, which manifests itself, warm and incongruous, low in morpheus’ own belly.

he allows it to stay.

“it was dangerous,” says morpheus. “it is still.”

hob puts down his empty snifter, rising from the banquette where he had spent the evening with his attention fixed unwavering on morpheus. he hovers there beside their table, dragging his fingertips back and forth through the condensation that has pooled in the nicks and imperfections of the tabletop, and he does nothing more than stare.

“controlled burning,” hob says softly, without preamble. “that thing they do to forests. that’s what i thought it’d be like, with you. back then.”

“you thought i might destroy you, and create you anew,” dream says, for this is a language he understands. 

hob’s lips twitch, wry. “turns out that is what you do, isn’t it?” 

“sometimes, yes,” dream says. “when i deem it necessary.” 

a pause: the only sounds in the dimly-lit room the whisper of hob’s indignant thoughts and the patter of rain on the windowpanes. 

“and you didn’t deem it necessary then? when—when i was—” overloud, hob falters. self-reproach looks ill on him, but not quite foreign, an inherited garment he has come to call his own. 

“you are not of my creation, hob gadling,” dream tells him. “not mine to unmake.” 

the words seem to strike and spark at something within hob, to chisel away the last of his restraint, and at last he goes down to kneel before morpheus with a muffled thud, uncaring of his gracelessness—two hundred and thirty-three years of waiting tallied up in the tense slope of his shoulders, in the way he tips his face up to catch dream’s eyes. 

“aren’t i?” a little sardonic, a little molten at the edges. "then where’s the harm?” he touches dream’s knee, another form of asking.

morpheus frowns down at him, even as his thighs spread, even as he invites hob between them. his own arousal, morpheus finds, is no longer just a specter of hob’s: no, morpheus is a collapsing star, he is an approximation of a man, he smolders like a torched ruin, he countermands his own laws, he is hard in his trousers where before there had been nothing— 

he grasps the nape of robert gadling’s neck, holds him still with a strength that would bruise a mortal; but mortal hob is not, and morpheus feels the instant hob relaxes in his grip. hears hob struggle to bite off the gasp that nearly stutters out of him. 

“there is much yet in this for you to comprehend,” morpheus says. he releases hob with an ungentle shove, so that hob sways off-kilter in dream’s orbit and must steady himself open-palmed against the tops of dream’s thighs to keep from losing his balance entirely. 

he watches as hob works to collect himself. as he stares hard at the ground, catching his breath. as he tries and fails to hide the hot stain of his flush with his amber-lit hair. and when hob looks up at morpheus again, he wears a shadow of the same rascal’s grin he had worn in 1789, when lady constantine threatened him with a knife.

“well, then,” hob says, half hubris and all need. “show me.”
