new work laptop and it's time to vent again about just how _bad_ apple is at ux:

- clicking the clock doesn't display a calendar

- can't remove the clock because it's now tied into the notifications sidebar

- can't disable the notifications sidebar

- you _can_ disable desktop icons, but you have to do it scorched earth style, aka `defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop false && killall Finder` my beloved

- you can't maximize or aerosnap, fortunately there's the rectangle app for that

- the dead space around the notch is colored by your wallpaper instead of being a set color or transparency, fortunately there's the topnotch app for that

- the dead space around the notch is considered part of the wallpaper and clicking it dismisses all windows, but doesn't undismiss

- you can disable notifications, but if you forget a critical slider set to on, it overrides the main breaker switch for the whole notifications category

- the file system explorer is called Finder, good fucking god

- the _Finder_ refuses to acknowledge that this is a _computer_ with a _file system_ and only shows you a fictionalized version of your system

- seriously Finder, you're a unix-y system, etc exists, bin exists, opt exists, usr exists, the damn root directory exists, please stop gaslighting everyone

Idk if anyone here is a Mac whiz, but I've been having a lot of problems with scanning software that is getting in the way of my archival work. I made a post on Reddit, if you feel like you have any advice to offer I'd love you to take a look at it.

So I just took the LSAT today and to be completely honest… wasn’t as bad as I thought it’d be. Somehow finished every section with time leftover to doublecheck my work! Feeling pretty good about it 🥰 even though I pulled an all-nighter before it and still haven’t slept… 🫠

Not intentionally, mind you—LSAC’s new online LSAT Proctor software isn’t compatible with the new MacOS Sonoma 14.0… so spent all night trying to learn how to downgrade my MacOS version in order to download the testing/proctoring software before my 7am exam.

Turns out, on silicon-chip Macs (M1+), you can’t just simply downgrade or restart/reboot your laptop to the software it originally came in. That’s apparently only an available option on Intel Macs.

Instead, if you have a silicon Mac, you have to go through the complicated process of:

1. Backing up your Mac using Time Machine on some other external hard drive or disk (since downgrading completely wipes your startup disk and erases all data)

2. Setting up a Bootable Installer—also on an external hard drive (separate)

3. Downloading the version software from Apple’s App Store (the easiest part of the entire process! Though, of course, you can’t even run it until you’ve done everything else first)

4. Using the Terminal app and running the specific (in my case, Ventura) command as found on Apple’s website and proceeding with the rest of the commands to get it working.

which… don’t get me started on figuring out how to set up a Bootable Installer. This was all completely foreign to me and honestly I was two “error” messages away from a complete mental breakdown.

At 5am, I gave up and woke up my poor friend to beg her to let me use her laptop for my LSAT.

If anyone can send me a crash course on using the Macbook’s Terminal app, it would be more than welcomed!

At this point, I gotta set up a Bootable Installer just for the spite of it. Never letting myself get blindsided like this again! Will always have a backup version. Learned my lesson lol

Recover Recently Deleted Passwords On IPhone, IPad, And Mac

If you have recently deleted passwords on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac and want to recover them, you can check if they are stored in iCloud Keychain. Here’s how you can attempt to recover them on each device:

On iPhone and iPad:

Go to Settings:

Open the Settings app.

Navigate to Passwords:

Scroll down and tap on Passwords.

Check iCloud Keychain:

Make sure your device is signed in with your Apple ID and that iCloud Keychain is enabled.

Your passwords should be available here if they were saved in Keychain.

Recently Deleted:

I am like this close to subscribing to Adobe PS plan legally cos I'm too tired to follow the bajillion instructions on how to crack PS on Mac. I did it successfully once and then somehow Adobe busted my ass after a software update and now I'm having gif-making withdrawals... Photopea just ain't cutting it. This is a cry for help. If anyone comes across a good tutorial on how to crack PS on macOS Sonoma please reach out to me.

PSA on MacOS Sonoma and Motion Sensitivity

ok, so i was super excited to update my computer to Sonoma, and my first impression once it finished updating:

instant motion sickness

i could barely even enter in my password to get it to stop, kind of bad

so, naturally, i go to settings and turn on Reduce Motion and go to change the wallpaper, and hey, that new picture of Sonoma is pretty and not currently moving, let’s go with that

i then lock my computer and come back later, and BOOM ITS FLIPPING MOVING AGAIN EVEN WITH REDUCE MOTION TURNED ON

wtf Apple. you’re telling me that there is no way to have the new scenery WITHOUT THE MOVING???

smh i’m not even someone who normally has sensory issues, and i normally don’t need to go digging in accessibility settings, so how are people who actually rely on these settings supposed to get by?????
