writer interview

I was tagged by @vaynglories, @lynne-monstr and @la-muerta all at one point or another. Thank you all kindly, sorry it took me so long! 💗

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

120 unique works. I have two double entries from when the old Yuletide archive was imported to AO3, so the total on my author page is 122. It's missing any fic I wrote before 2005 but honestly I'm fine with those being lost in the mists of the internet. If you know, you know.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

1,004,161.

I didn't actually wait to do this meme until I passed the one million words mark, but I also kinda did.

3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I used to and it's my one continuing regret that I haven't been able to catch up with my inbox! The greatest reason why I currently seldom reply to comments is that I have such a backlog. The other reason is that I will either answer comments or write more fic, and I'm sure everyone rather that I do the latter. Still, I miss the conversation around fic that replying to comments often generated.

I mean: I need more writing friends and goddamn, please talk to me because I feel detached from fandom and it's the worst thing.

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Probably to make the saints attend them long (malec, T, SH) which ends with extremely heavily implied MCD.

I tend to write hopeful to bittersweet endings, so this was a rarity for me.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Define happy ending? I do have one, all souls sheltered, (dorian x bull, T, DA:I) which IS the soft epilogue I wanted those two characters to have after all their toils and troubles.

These two questions mostly tell me that most of my endings don't fit well on the happy to sad scale. I tend to leave characters at points where they can look forward to the future and any acute crises are over, but I really wish "happy for now" or "a happy middle" would stick as ending descriptions because that's where I live.

7. Do you write crossovers?

I write fusions? Not traditional crossovers but I have a very niche fic thing where I take Alec and Magnus and stick them into the worlds of videogames I love. To wit, the Witcher (Walkers of the Winding Path) and Final Fantasy X (Servant of the Spiral).

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yep. Didn't much care for it.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do! I've written my share of PWP but more typically the process goes something like this:

I find a kink/trope/sex situation I want to try writing

the fic grows copious amounts of plot/worldbuilding/interpersonal drama (exhibit A: the tentacle porn that came with 3,000 words of, uh, creature logistics so I could have tentacles)

I spend two years working on bullet point two before the characters ever get naked in each other's company

My smut fic tends to the tender/longing/emotional, though. I use sex mostly as a vehicle for character exploration or to drive the drama of a story, so most of my sex scenes pull double duty to also move the overall story forward.

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not to my knowledge. I'm a pretty niche writer in most of my fandoms, I don't think you would make either much fandom fame or big bucks with my writing.

11. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! to make the saints attend them long is translated into Italian.

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No. I'm a slow writer and I have to hew out writing time from the bedrock of my RL, so it wouldn't be very conducive to sharing a creative project, even though the basic idea appeals to me.

13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

I was gonna make a joke about being asked to rate my children, but tbh I would rather not refer to fictional characters by any family term. However! I have changing obsessions and there's always some ship or canon that is eating up my brain at any given time, but I don't really get over ships. The details of canons fade with time but characters live forever in my heart.

Back in the mists of time, Ichigo and Rukia changed who I was as a person. (Then I added in Renji and It Got Better.) I adore Alec and Magnus but the fandom was categorically A Lot. Same with Dorian and Bull. Josephine and Cassandra were a total crack ship in the sense that there's no canon but I still love the idea of an f/f lady/champion pairing.

And right now I have two competing wuxia ot3s vying from my attention so. This is not a question I can answer.

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

My general fic writing philosophy is "whatever you can, whenever you can". I've made my peace with the fact that sometimes I'll start a thing and post a bit and then it simply won't get finished. Fic is free and no one has to click on a WIP (much as I love those people who will!)

So, unfortunately there's a few old WIPs on my ao3 that I don't think will ever get wrapped. The older the fic, the less likely it is. I keep them up as testament to the process, I suppose, or in case anyone likes the idea enough to read whatever I managed of it.

15. What are your writing strengths?

Putting canon under a lens until I have a mental Wall of Crazy with ten thousand interconnecting red strings and obscure notes, and then wringing story out of elements in the text that might not seem to connect on the surface.

I know sometimes you have to just wholesale go "this makes zero sense" and drop a bit of canon, but what I enjoy is taking bits and pieces and adapting them to fic. My current project is writing all the Mu Nihuang POV she really kind of doesn't get in Nirvana in Fire itself, and I am having a blast.

Also: character voice, action scenes, evocative description, setting up an emotional punch and taking you out with it 2,000 words later

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

I'm slow, picky, and obsessive. I have to be In A Mood before I can put words to paper (I'm trying to combat this by becoming more of a garbage goblin about my first drafts. All words are good words! Hissss!) I'm bad at humour unless I'm accidentally funny.

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

It can be used to good effect but it's best used sparingly. I would generally always prefer that plot-relevant or important dialogue were simply, "This is the murder weapon," she said in French. Don't withhold information or emotional impact for the sake of showing off.

And oh god, never, ever put dialogue through MTL and expect it to come out right. If you absolutely need dialogue in a foreign language, consult an actual person that speaks it.

18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Very technically, ElfQuest. For actual published fic, Rurouni Kenshin.

19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?

Mysterious Lotus Casebook tickles my brain but I don't yet quite know what I want to write about! I have enough trouble herding the rowdy cats that are my NiF ideas right now.

20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

Always the one I'm working on. So much of the joy of fic is bound up in the good creative rush of making it happen. Just as so much of the woe of fic is in the fucking toil of making it happen.

Anyway! Flowers in Dreamland Weather (jingsuhuang, E, Nirvana in Fire) got me out of a slump and gave me new characters and relationships to rotate in my head, and I love it for that.

Talking With Strangers (malec, E, Shadowhunters) actually got finished in a satisfying way, and I love it for that.

Okay question in relation to your Genshin idea. what are proxies? And also, do tell me about the horror being :D

Oh. Ohhhhh EEEEHEEEHEEEHEEEEEEE >:D I’m so excited to explain this it’s not even funny —

SO! 👏 Let’s start with a mild history lesson, one that delves into the history of ARGs and Slenderman.

(Silver I’m so sorry you’re in for a ramble bestie)

One of the original ARG’s, also known as Alternate Reality Game, is Marble Hornets. I want to say this id the one that helped really give Slender some proper lore, such as camera glitches, him stalking people, and proxies.

A proxy is, if I remember correctly, a human who has been stalked and corrupted by The Operator(Slenderman), now acting as a minion or puppet. To use a reference, if this was The Magnus Archives, The Operator would be a Fear Entity while a Proxy would be a Avatar.

The two most well known Proxies, Masky and Hoodie, also came from Marble Hornets.

So, that’s what a Proxy is. Now, moving on to the horror being in the Genshin Impact fic!

I plan on them being a Slenderman like entity, all long limbs, tentacles, and no face. That’s where the similarities end. I want this one to be more of a forest entity, a old one too. Wrath of nature, detachment from humanity - I’m trying to really bring some Eldritch-ness to Genshin Impact.

I need a name for them, though 😂

The proxies serving them, are named Liam, Mike, and Lewis. Liam is the first proxy taken, whose character notes are “dramatic”, “elegant”, and “witty”. His mask covers his entire face, leaving “X” marks where his eyes should be and a crack for a grin across the mouth area.

Mike is second, and his character notes are “hostile”, “quiet”, and “stern”. Out of the three, he is the strongest, and by far the most loyal. Even with Liam being with Horror Entity the longest, Mike honestly is devoted fully. His mask is a plague doctor’s mask, painted black and with the glass eyes having a red tint.

Finally, Lewis. Currently the newest proxy, he’s…”timid”, “clever”, but “fearful of the others”. He’s still getting used to being a proxy, and out of the three - most likely to turn. His mask is a classic gas mask with spikes now attached to the vents.

For the kink meme Give me a kink, and I’ll make a top 10 of the ships I like to read it for, I’ve been asked for tentacles. Yay!

First, I like better to read fic when the tentacles are somehow canon-adjacent, not for realistic fandoms. Art is different, I’ve been enjoying lots of OFMD art with symbolic kraken tentacles. But it’s a reading meme!

1 - Kumi/Yuri (Alien Nine)

Canon alien tendril tentacles that come with an urge for mental fusion, sign me in. (No porn, they’re kids, but the trop wasn’t tentacle porn ^^)

2 - Bill/Ford (Gravity/Falls)

I commissioned this art from @cirilee​ years ago, I hope they don’t mind me sharing it? But yeah, this ship has dreams encounters with shapeshifting, so many possibilities! And it’s also one of my all-time fave ships, so...

3 - Elias/Chise (The Ancient Magus Bride)

The tentacle hugs are one of the things that sold me the ship. ^^

4 - Venom/Eddie (Venom)

The tentacle ship on tumblr, and it deserves it. 

5 - Karima Shapandar/Callisto (X-men)

They met once. But they were incredibly flirty and this was during the time Callisto has tentacles and also I love them both.

6 - Londo/G’Kar (Babylon 5)

I decided unilaterally that six prehensiles penises count as tentacles. It’s a bit of a cheat, that’s why it’s not higher, but it’s one of my all times favourite ships.

7 - The End/Oliver (The Magnus Archives)

I’m very much into religious kink, so when your god manifest to you in your dreams as a mass of dark tendrils, I’m having bad ideas immediately.

8 - Celty/Shinra (Durarara!!)

T ed Klein’s The 13 Most Terrifying Horror Stories

1. “Casting the Runes” by M. R. James

Despite their cozy fireside atmosphere, James’s tales of poor doomed antiquarians always raise a chill. This one made a dandy film, Curse of the Demon. Other James masterpieces: “Count Magnus,” “The Ash-Tree,” and “The Treasure of Abbot Thomas.”

2. “Novel of the Black Seal” by Arthur Machen

Machen’s lyrical, visionary fiction tends to provoke wonder rather than fright, but this tale, about a surviving race of “Little People” in backwoods Wales, has moments of real terror. Also noteworthy: “The White People” and Machen’s little-known “Out of the Picture.”

3. “The Willows” by Algernon Blackwood

Otherworldly encroachments on a desolate island in the Danube. Lovecraft regarded this as the greatest horror story ever written; certainly it’s the greatest horror story about camping out.

4. “The Dunwich Horror” by H. P. Lovecraft

Quintessential HPL, mixing cosmic horror and a brooding New England locale. Another classic: “The Call of Cthulhu,” a documentary-style tale that takes the whole world as its province.

5. “Bird of Prey” by John Collier

Collier is renowned for his sophisticated wit, but in this account of a malevolent thing that hatches from an enormous egg, he’s also bloodcurdling—with the real shocker unveiled in the final line.

6. “Who Goes There?” by “Don A. Stuart” (John W. Campbell)

Antarctic horror, the genesis of The Thing. You may wonder, after reading it, if your best friend is actually a tentacled alien bent on world domination.

7. “They Bite” by Anthony Boucher

Boucher invents a totally new—and terrifyingly convincing—breed of monster, the desert-dwelling Carkers.

8. “Stay Off the Moon!” by Raymond F. Jones

Published in the December ’62 Amazing (and now thankfully out of date), the story suggests that something rather nasty lurks beneath the lunar surface. If the Apollo astronauts had read this one, they might have stayed home.

9. “Ottmar Balleau X 2” by George Bamber

First published in Rogue and then in Judith Merril’s seventh annual Year’s Best S-F (1963), the tale introduces us to a letter-writing psychopath who seems to have taken his cue from L. P. Hartley’s “W. S.”

10. “First Anniversary” by Richard Matheson

Just the thing for anyone who’s ever suspected that his wife isn’t entirely human. Domestic paranoia in full flower. Another fine example: Matheson’s “Prey,” which became a film to avoid watching alone.

11. “The Autopsy” by Michael Shea

Published in the December ’80 F&SF, this tale of alien possession in an isolated West Virginia mining community features a monster even more demonic than The Thing.

12. “The Trick” by Ramsey Campbell

Hopeless, inescapable horror from a child’s point of view, by the genre’s grimmest practitioner. Appears in Karl Wagner’s Year’s Best Horror #10. Other Campbell contenders: “Cold Print,” “The Interloper,” and “The End of a Summer’s Day.”

13. “To Build a Fire” by Jack London

Natural rather than supernatural horror: the harrowing account of a walk in the woods that becomes a race with death. Reminiscent, in its growing sense of dread, of Captain Scott’s doomed journey from the Pole.

Honorable mention to two literally monstrous tales from Donald A. Wollheim’s 1955 anthology Terror in the Modern Vein: “Fritzchen” by Charles Beaumont and “Mimic” by Wollheim himself; to Fritz Leiber’s meditation on Evil, “A Bit of the Dark World,” written to match its wonderful cover illustration in the February ’62 Fantastic; and to two short horror novels that, where so many fail, manage to sustain a sense of the uncanny—Ringstones by “Sarban” (John W. Wall) and The House on the Borderland by William Hope Hodgson.

Q: What are your other fandoms? A: So many... there are so many. To start, there's Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Boku No Hero Academia (although that's on the backburner for now), the Carry On books by Rainbow Rowell, Rick Riordan's books (Magnus Chase series in particular, currently), just recently I watched I Am Not Okay With This, and also I'm into many, many musicals. I can guarantee you there are still more, along with some foreign content and those fandoms. I have so many interests, it's ridiculous.

Q: Any other things people should know about you? A: I'm fucking feral. That's a joke, but I do tend to go off (read: go White Violin mode) if I really get going about something, and I do have a tendency to talk loud and yell... a lot. I have a qpp, their name is NJ you should totally go follow them because they're amazing and I love them (@be-ace-punch-nazis​). I'm also fluent in Russian, so if you wanna chat in that I am down for it! :)

What do they do?

Q: What sort of content do you make? A: I make all sorts of things for TUA! I used to do a lot of incorrect quotes, but now I tend to write and draw :) there's also a bit of poetry floating around my blog. I make meta sometimes (although a lot of it is still not posted...) and also like to try and point out things I find in the show! Another Thing of mine is AUs and HCs; there have been some truly cursed things born from my rambling bullet points. Q: How long have you been making TUA content? A: I've been making content since somewhere around April, I think? My first TUA fic was published somewhere around June. I only got into TUA a couple months after it came out, and it took some more time for me to actually start making things.

Q: What’s your favorite piece of content that you’ve made? A: I don't think I have a favorite piece but IF I HAVE TO CHOOSE, then one of my favorite art pieces I've made is the Ace Luther painting, and one of my favorite fics is "we sail upon forgotten waters", though there are definitely more galaxy brain takes I have written. Q: Do you ever wish you did something else for the fandom? A: I wish I could make music sometimes, I've tried to write songs for the characters but I'm not good at composing at all :')) I also wish I could do more content in general, because lately my attention has been kind of diverted onto other media (still very into TUA though) but other than that, nope! I'm happy with what I'm doing here.

Q: What is your favorite piece of content that you haven’t made? (Made by someone else in the fandom) A: Goddd a lot of my favorite fics come from the lovely @evelinaonline, and Bree's writing is so godtier... I love the thing people in this fandom create so much, I can't think of any specific content creator I love but hey!! If you make TUA content and are reading this *waves* I love you!! What are their views on TUA?

Q: Who is your favorite character? A: Ben. I love them all, and I can't pick an ultimate favorite, but it's Ben. He has the "dead asshole" and "babey" appeals. (Along with many others but... I just think he's neat lmao.)

Q: Which is your favorite: comics or show? A: I like the show more, I'm gonna say, it was the first thing I consumed for TUA. But the comics do hold a place in my heart and I love them a lot, too.

Q: What is your favorite part of the comics or the show? A: I love all the show, and while I can name some least favorite parts (cough incest cough the rave scene cough) I can't name a favorite lmao. I do really like the I Think We're Alone Now dance scene, though. (And Five's Istanbul fiasco... though rest assured those aren't my ultimate faves, they're two I can think of though.) [For the comics,] I suppose when the Séance saves the world with his telekinesis (oop, spoilers) and when Number Five is exposed as a furry? Good shit. (Also the Horror's scenes kdfsk I love me some dead tentacle man.) (Comic Ben in general is just very neat to me. You go, you funky ghost tentacle man.)

Q: How do you feel about the fandom discourse? (Like sibling shipping, anti-Vanya, anti-Luther, etc) A: FUCK sibling shipping, incest is gross. (Of course though I'm not gonna directly call out people or w/e, do whatever you want, I'm not you mom, but I 100% do not support incest and sibling shipping.) Anti-Vanya and Anti-Luther is stupid, whoever is against them clearly hasn't bothered to actually watch the show lmao, while both of those characters are "problematic" so is... literally all of the entire cast. I mean, come on. Stop scapegoating and recognize they were all abused and wronged, and have all done shitty things, "don't villainize abuse victims" isn't that hard to wrap you head around.
