scent of the day: whispers in the library (maison martin margiela)
now this i adore. it's a simple, linear fragrance, but it's really well executed. the vanilla is warm and papery, the woods smell resinous like freshly polished furniture, and there is a bit of an camphoraceous/resinous incense note too, but not in a church service kind of way. it enhances the dust-motes-caught-in-a-sunray atmosphere of the fragrance and also hints at the scent properties of ink and binding materials, and even of an apothecary's medicinal cabinet. very evocative and faithful to the premise of an old library.
whispers in the library's vanilla is so heady it verges on boozy. avoid if that's not your type of scent or if you have an aversion to anything mothball-adjacent, but if you've ever felt intoxicated by the scent of an old bookshop (minus any sneeze-inducing dust), this will be a dream come true. it's very gender-neutral, too. it may be one of my favourite replica scents, next to coffee break.
I've used this seasonal rotation of perfumes for years and will probably continue to do so for many, many more. I can highly recommend all of them as longlasting and interesting fragrances!
scent of the day: matcha meditation (maison martin margiela)
matcha meditation starts, true to its name, with a puff of dry and warm matcha powder; it reminds me of baking matcha desserts, before the sugar is added. i like that it's distinctively matcha-y, with that earthier aroma than standard green tea. after about five minutes, though, the fragrance has completely changed in character: that clear matcha vanishes, though vague green tea notes linger, and jasmine and bergamot are now very dominant.
at this stage it reminds me a little of artemisia by penhaligon's, which was a fragrance i used to love (until i ran out of it) and didn't expect to re-encounter in this. matcha meditation is very fresh, but way more floral and feminine than i thought it would be. it has a very spring-appropriate feel and relatively good performance compared to other scents in the replica line. the base notes balance woodyness and moss with a hint of creamy sweetness from the white chocolate. overall, i do enjoy it and i think it's a gorgeous scent, even though i expected more androginy, more matcha, and a more... well, meditative tone, leaning into the green astringency of tea. great if you're a fan of bergamot and jasmine, just don't expect it to follow through on its name after the initial spray.
