This is what my friend earns by giving tuitions.
He can't afford a car. (Travels on a good bike though.)
Every month on the last Sunday, he organises a Bhandara (serves free food).
And the amazing thing is that he serves exotic dishes like Pav bhaji, Chole Bhature, Chowmein to poor people.
His entire family and friends contribute and take part with enthusiasm and excitement.
He keeps two big drums of cold water during summers outside the small house where he lives on the 2nd floor for thirsty people to drink during summers.
Every passing year he conducts a havan (religious ceremony) at his home to thank God for giving a stress free happy life in previous year.
He doesn't own many clothes but always wears well ironed clean clothes, and keeps his hair well combed.
I don't know how he manages his expenses in this financially draining world of today but lack of any stress on his forehead muscles, and the permanent smile shows how satisfied he is.

I do want to talk about sharing art online from the perspective of a hobby freelancer but before that I'll just toss this tidbit I mentioned on my main
Reblogs are not numbers. Reblogs are meant to share and pass on artwork that someone may like. NO ONE is forced to reblog anything BUT it is a core of engagement in a space like tumblr. Engagement is what brings in interest after all and it's one piece of what makes it important for freelance artists here.
When you look at the numbers and the notes, we need to stop viewing them and comparing them with likes (me included) or total in general. It doesn't help.
Artists do self rebloging to both show or remind folks they've done some work as well as to nudge people to reblog their stuff. Tags are nice and comments in them are a nice way to engage too but passing on the work, especially to help someone to get noticed, is a good way to just work the site as intended.
It will always be about luck because we can't guess who wants to engage with what online. You also can't blame yourselves for this. Don't use the internet mentality of "content" (eugh!) and "flopping" and go about it that way. People find stuff I drew years back and find ways to engage with it now. It's really about luck.
There are things that can help but I'll go about it in another post.
One more thing. Don't be shy about "shilling". Advertise your open commissions, your patreons or ko-fis. I promise it has nothing to do with how big of an artist you are. Remember that you're doing that within your own zone so "bothering" followers is hardly the case, it's your house. Make a tag for it if it helps your mind. I say as someone with social anxiety.

like, I'm old school web comic culture, I like handmade zines that are stapled, I just want to make comics and tell stories and the ranking system of the popular webcomic sites exhaust me to my core, which is why I like tumblr. I want to draw sulla wound fingering crassus and not think about the metrics.

PSA real quick: Don’t buy art advice
I’m not talking about art tutorials or like supporting a tier on someone’s patreon to get feedback or stuff like that, that’s a different thing. This is also not about going to art school.
What I am talking about is stuff like online courses and books that people sell on topics like secrets to growing your art instagram, making loads of passive money off your work, stuff like that. It’s fake.
I’ve seen a disturbing amount of them appear which is why I’m making this PSA. There is no secret to growing your art instagram or making passive money off your art or kickstarting your freelance carreer. If the tips are legit, it’s out there for free if you look for it. We are already talking about it because we’re already doing it. People making these courses and selling these books are only sharing stuff you can already google yourself. These people are rarely making their livings as artists themselves, instead they’re just doing the art world version of get rich quick schemes, they’re praying on your passions and selling you advice that is either already publicly available, unhelpful or even just false.
I’ll give you some advice for free, kay?
Improving your art:
First and foremost working on improving your art should always be priority and you can find tutorials on any subject matter for free pretty much anywhere if you just google stuff like “how to draw a cloud”. Your art is what people will want to buy/see so keep improving it and keep making it if your goals is to build a carreer or an audience, there is no way around it.
Growing your audience
Straight up just engage with whichever app/site you’re using. Post good art yourself, but be a cheerleader for others first and foremost. Post consistently, not constantly, use appropriate tags, talk about your work in your descriptions and engage with people who engage with you. That stuff is in your control, the rest is honestly just luck. For some people it takes a long time, for others it’s a faster progress, there is no secret here, no one knows how to please the algorithm, we’re all just throwing crumbs out and hoping it gets eaten. Bots and promo bots will do more harm than good and spamming other people’s accounts asking them to check you out or tagging someone in your art that’s completely unrelated to them is just annoying. Just chill and post your art and have fun. Remember that social media should ‘t be a popularity contest, it should be social.
Making money
There are so many ways! I don’t even know half the ways and it depends what you want to achieve really. You can make money selling commissions, you can try to get a job at some sort of company, at which there are many who’d want to employ artists, games, films, animation, marketing, marketing departments in companies that otherwise do completely unrelated stuff, I’ve heard of an artist working fulltime at a science lab. There is room for you, you just need to find your industry. You can also license your work which is where the passive income comes in and there are a bunch of ways to do this too google it. You can be an illustrator for books or magazines, you can be a cartoonist for a paper, you can do logos or t-shirt designs and you can work freelance as pretty much whatever you want. It’s not going to be easy finding these jobs and most people do several jobs at once. It takes time to build up clientell and find your opportunities but a good place to start is straight up just googling “how to license my art” or “how to become a concept artist” or just straight up “how to make money as an artist.” It’s all out here.
I don’t have all the answers at hand and I’m too busy looking for all the resources for you. I bet other people will happily provide links and stuff, so feel free to share resources! My point id just this:
Everything is out there for free, google it.

Hello 👋 how are you? I love your page and you feel like a comfort person. Thank you. I wanted to ask if you have some ideas regarding jobs and finance for those who don't have full time jobs. Do you have any recommendations for jobs that you can do online and earn passively? Thank you ♥
Hi love! Thank you so much. Glad to hear you enjoy my page and its content <3
Some contract/freelance jobs I would recommend to increase your (potential) passive income include:
Sell items online like Poshmark/Depop, eBay, etc.
Purchase & flip domains
Purchase/resell clothing, accessories, and other trending items
Rent out items or owned spaces (in your home, parking spaces, classes you've purchased from a membership, etc.)
Create a social channel (YouTube/TikTok) or blog with ads
Write an e-book/a course/self-published book
Affiliate marketing
Sell photo presets/templates/photography/art online
Investing in a high-yield savings account (/CD) or dividend stocks
Hope this helps xx

Were you given guidelines for what the Duviri paintings should express or look like? To me they're pitch perfect between some kind of unearthly beauty and an elaborate fairy tale visuals - a style I really like
Hi! I'm happy they come across that way, thank you! 😊
I was actually given a ridiculous amount of freedom! They never said anything about the 'storybook' thing, but they told me a little bit about Thrax since he was supposed to be the focus of the paintings - Duviri is his kingdom and he's the Main Character™ so they wanted me to portray his elevated view of himself and some of his 'supporting characters'. They gave some ideas for what I could draw (mostly the characters) but they left it always pretty open should I have any ideas - which I did! The giant hands+head in the sky on the Orowyrm piece is there because I loved it so much when I saw it on the gameplay demo (I love how dramatic it is, the sense of scale, and the hands' gesture just had something that spoke to me), and so is the fractal-ish shape that frames Thrax on his throne that you can see on the Duviri landscape (the shapes reminded me of stained glass windows in cathedrals and I really liked it)!
It was a lot more exploratory than the usual illustration jobs I've done so far, I did a lot of different sketches, but we had the time and there's a world of difference when you feel like your input and your ideas/opinions matter, and when the person on the other side understands what you do (thank you Mat).
I think it was just a really good marriage between the world they created and my style and things I like to paint. I really leaned into the whole theatricality of the characters and environment because I really love to draw stuff like that. It's about the symbolism rather than a realistic depiction or even a narrative. Which just goes to show that they knew what they were doing because when I first got the email I was like "me??? painting Warframe stuff??? are you sure???" - I had never played the game but if there was one thing I knew about it, it was the insanely complex designs! I was a little worried™ and yet it turned out to be a truly lovely experience :)
Kudos to DE's art team, they did the hard work of creating and designing the world and its characters, I just got to play with it!

Patreon question
I'm focusing hard on budgeting, and one of the things I want to do more of in the coming year is support independent creators/small groups on Patreon and Substack, even if I can only do a little bit at a time. I have a few creators I already support on Patreon, and two on Substack, but I'd love to support more.
I know you've got creators that you love to support on these platforms! Tell me who you support and why you started supporting them if you have creators that are especially unique or near and dear to you. Anything and everything, across the board, I love supporting small business and I love finding new people and niches I never heard about before. There're no wrong answers here!
