#. Sam gets a big crush on Uzi, he wants to try impress her and hang out with her. So he tries asking her out whenever he can, Uzi oblivious to his crush agrees and hangs out with him a lot.

#. Uzi shows him anime and he ends up liking anime quite a lot, his favourite type being chill slice of life or the cooking anime. Makes him jealous they can't eat like humans can

#. He makes her a badge of their favourite anime character for her to wear on her beanie.

#. Sam is a talented artist and has a sketch book full of drawings and abstract work too. When he on magnets is when some his most colourful work is done. He has a very detailed drawing of Uzi he keeps special. It's of her in class reading, she looked so pretty that day.

#. Sam got a bit jealous when Thad started talking to Uzi , he could see Uzi seemed to like him a bit and was a little sad by that. He got more upset when N showed up because he could definitely see Uzi big crush on him.

#. He talk with Uzi about N and he encourages her to tell him how she feels, being a wingman.

#. Sam writes a love note to Uzi along with a drawing and sends it to her anonymously, hoping to impress her. He was too scared to sign it.

1 + 5: it was a crush that's been there since the begining, uzi was always kinda cute and charming, the way she interupted class with sarcastic wit on occasion, the way she would go above and beyond what the assignments were just to have her own fun. sam has always been the more quiet, shut in type, always following rules, never usually being the type to speak up or make a sound, but whenever uzi does something particularly silly he can't help but laugh a little (and boy shes a whole fucking circus so lemmie tell you). though he had to eventually start making moves once thad god involved.

for the record, i do NOT ship thad n uzi, i get it as a ship, but it just aint my thing, however im a big fan of unrequitted love, and i can absolutely see uzi just not being interested in the popular jock type (shes more into the silent stoner type COUGH COUHG(J)), seeing thad as more of a close friend due to him being so caring when no one else seemed to be.

unfortunately for sam the only time he was able to fully talk and get to know uzi was AFTER she was already introduced to his oil (lmfao)

(Elliot figured it out quickly but not before he irrevocably damaged his understanding of love with unrealistic expectations and few boundaries. He's constantly chagrined by society + his own self hatred but has a decent amount of compromises in place to protect himself. and nolanel is not normal. nolanel will never be normal about anything in his life, least of all sex)

but oh MAN this is a good question and one i think abt all the time. the answers are v detailed and a bit nsfw so it's all going under a cut

elliot was young when he figured it out. his childhood was lonely and studious--and that was partly his doing. josseloux treated him almost like an adult, allowing him to make his own decisions abt where to go and what to do, and elliot invariably pursued learning over play. he was snobbish, oversensitive, and peculiarly observant and analytical--which hasn't rly changed.

he was obsessed with quixotic male heroes, would find his eye drawn for hours to the ideal male figures in statues, and wanted nothing to do with the coarse or unintelligent (read: not like him) boys around him. josseloux wasn't unaware, and stuffed a few books in his shelves to bait his son. something like edward carpenter's anthology of friendship Absolutely ruined elliot's understanding of what a relationship w another man should be: something full of devout loyalty, intellectual greatness, unerring inspiration, and nothing like what he observed in real life. he was Different and he wanted Better.

women were Better but they didn't do it Right. they had the grace, kindness, and beauty that he wanted--except they were women, and women were inconvenient bc of societal structure/expectations and ☆misogyny☆. he intuited what sex was between the lines of his dad's books and decided it was not for him. then a teenage boy stopped an 8yo eli in the hall, bent to fix elliot’s tie, and spiraled him into understanding.

his imagination became more in depth once he knew what he wanted to see but wasn't seeing it. as he grew older, his queerness became more prominent in contrast w the dominant culture, and he began to resent the way people treated him as a curiosity. it was in his sense of beauty, his voice, the carry of his body, his values, and he knew that he would feel humiliated abt it for the rest of his life. he doubled down on himself and allowed ppl who wanted to dislike him to do so; he would weaponize gossip against them eventually.

he's still self-conscious. self-hatred is part of it, but most of that hatred is towards other parts of himself. at this point, he's thrown himself so far into fretting about his socks  that bigger matters feel smaller. almost every salon, house, lodge, and backroom where queer talk happens has also heard elliot's laugh. his experience w relationships before nol are unexpectedly fleeting and shallow, too: 6 months mightve been the longest because he always knew smth isnt clicking completely and it's all hot & quick sparks before they stop talking.

his first approach to nol was intellectual before anything else, then sexual, and when neither of those made nol open up, he regarded their interactions as platonic until he actually learned what nolanel's suppressed af tells were. then he kissed the dope and entered the 'Oh. So Nolanel Like-Likes Me. He's Also Terrified Of Me. Please God Tell Me I Can Fix This' phase. it got worse before it got better. its a miracle he didnt drop nol then and there but i never claimed elliot was smart.

anyway. nols insanity aside its a huge effort for elliot to have to juggle his big silly personality & professionalism with smth (possibly) undesirable that ppl clock in him the minute he's in view. by n large tho, he likes being gay n celebrates it. he just gets in trouble bc his gay feelings are too big for him to handle.

nolanel is just. jfc. so practically everything in the world terrifies nol. romance and sex are no different. part of that is just his own brain, and the other half is taught or cultural. he grew up knowing the how and why of sex bc of how crucial it was to the operation of the ranch. simultaneously, the only love he had towards a person was ephemie, so he just assumed one day he'd marry her and figure the rest out. he kissed her when he was 10 and both of them were like. uh yeah No.

his only other exposure to love was at community dances in the lowlands, where he danced and tried to convince himself of feelings but just couldn't sympathize with the couples secreted away and groping at each other. it didnt seem fun or worth breaking rules for. halone would be mad.

moving to the brume when he was 14 woke him up. the culture around sex was more open, which was distressing and confusing and thrilling. then the military compounded the jumble with peer pressure, the live-before-you-die mentality, and ohhhhhhh god oh no no no men everywhere why are men hot too. sex seemed embedded in everything down to their uniforms. perhaps he would learn to live w this. :)

absolutely fucking not. the ppl who ply sex horrify him by reminding him of his own desires (which halone says are bad). the most nol's done is make out w rando ladies but the minute they touch him past that he nopes out. this got even worse when his body was burned. dont look at him dont touch him (please look at him please touch him). he wants to be in love and have sex but any exp fills him w dread to the point it makes him sick. also, war makes him scared and sick. he is now doubly scared and sick. he starts telling himself its a waste and a distraction while knowing its not bc he cant. stop. thinking abt it.

ENTER BRUCEMONT. who loves sniffing out a weakness. he drills those feelings deeper into nols head while loudly contradicting them in his own life. he'll sit there and give explicit details abt the woman he bedded the night before so nol gets blueballed and furious. its hook line and sinker every time. truly embarrassing. brucemont loves his job. also, elliot is a political pest Needs To Go.

so this uber ridiculous religious, occupational, and personal shame cocktail is rly not helpful to nols state of mind. he Literally throws up after elliot kisses him for the first time bc he's so violently scared. his internalized homophobia acts up at the worst times, he's deathly ashamed of loving elliot at all for a while, and it takes forever for him learn that privacy is not secrecy and vice versa. the last thing i wrote is all about this.

honest to god if he just let himself enjoy something instead of analyzing the moral properties of kissing the man he's been pining after for 4 yrs, he'd have a better time of life. nol please go get laid im crying. and then he can't be normal abt that either bc hes i like uhhhh yeahhhhh im not rly interested in taking any of my clothes off the first time

I'm bad with words, specially in English, which is not my first language, please don't take this as an insult or offense, I really tried to just come here in friendly terms (terms? What I wanted to say it's, whatever you do in any fandom it's always best to do it for intrinsic motivators, specially if the fandoms are small. Having engament it's great, I'm a fanfic writer, I know that feeling of seeing any comment in my stories, but I learned long ago that I must do things for myself, for my personal enjoyment and fulfilment.

Don't get me wrong, i enjoy your blog, you will probably figure out who I am bc I'm gonna reblog stuff lmao but you know, do this for your own personal happiness, not to seek engament. I have stories from 2013 and even 2015 that to this day have no comments but I'm fine with it. I really enjoyed writing them and I'm proud of them, even if they have almost no engament at all, I wouldn't delete them for any reason <3

What I try to say it's try to not seek motivation in extrinsic motivators like engament and just do it to have fun! Do it for you, not expecting attention, but to just have fun and feel nice inside. Do gender bend, play with sexuality and relationships, explore and come out with new designs and lore, and enjoy it fully. Don't be afraid to take breaks if you need and come back when you feel like yeah, I wanna have fun with this again! I may be shooting myself in the foot since I'm saying dude take a break if you need, that it's totally fine, even tho I wnana see more of your ideas, but seriously, your personal enjoyment comes first :D

I'm a writer too, and I just have to say: it's just writing, dear. You're just writing some very good silly things and posting it on Tumblr, of all places. It's just some writing, no big deal here. You might feel like it sucks. But honestly? Nobody cares. It's Tumblr. No one has big expectations for anything here, or they shouldn't have, at least.

I usually feel insecure about posting because I feel like nobody is going to read or like my work. And... so what if they don't? I'm already expecting them not to read/like the moment I post something. So, what am I worried about? Worried about them not reading or liking it? When that was precisely what I was expecting to begin with? If you think about it, insecurity makes no sense.

There are people who come and go, leaving notes on your things (that have a lot of notes, from what I have seen). Some of these people decide to stay inside the room. i saw the post abt dj crazytimes being ableist which i checked his content and like yep its as bad and obvious as described. but then the addition to it by the literal YANK saying its xenophobic to make fun of eurodance having broken english is so wild to me like. yes cultural stereotypes against eastern europeans are v pervasive and often left unquestioned bc of leftover cold war propaganda yada yada. and arguably the fact that the original crazytimes sketches always mention eastern europe even tho a lot of those eurodance producers were from like sweden or especially germany is kind of dodgy, sure

that said, i genuinely dont think its xenophobic to make fun of these songs having broken english bc like. they genuinely did, in a funny and charming way. in the same way early max martin (britney, nsync, backstreet boys) makes NO sense - like wtf does 'tell me why / i never wanna hear you say / i want it that way' even MEAN. but then when the english is broken its almost even more poignant. like if u think abt it for a second 'what is love?' does not actually make sense in the context of the song but it goes so hard precisely bc its such a wild broken-english question. and stuff like "i still hear your voice when you sleep next to me" that raises more questions than it gives answers (is the person sleeping and therefore unable to talk? or are they gone but they used to talk in their sleep?) actually functions even more as a hook bc of how weird it is

idk if i just find non-english-speaking songwriters and singers fun and endearing (i love when you can tell guy-man is singing certain bits in daft punk songs bc u can hear his french accent even thru the robotic filters) but i genuinely dont think the song itself is xenophobic in that way? i wont even talk abt how the mention of 90s eurovision specifically is kind of silly from that one person and clearly shows they dont know the trope dj crazytimes is referencing, but like even without being v aware of eurodance in general, i think we can probably detach the real, bad, silly superiority complex of native english speakers when they hear foreigners try to talk in english (you speak one LESS language beloveds) from the fun of seeing words be used in odd, novel ways

i know a few ppl who agree that the mark saga was not... the best. and people are upset that leighs wishes were ignored in order to continue making sequels. i know he wasnt too happy abt the extra tape and stuff, which makes sense bc this is their franchise, but if they were not happy with it... im not sure why they bankrolled the rest? theyre producers on all of them after the first iirc. leigh might not like hoffman, his bastard child, but he seems content with us enjoying it so thats fine by me. if they truly hated it, i dont think theyd attach their names to it. that just looks like an endorsement. i think theyre just content with us enjoying it, leighs never seen them and probably never will but that doesnt mean he thinks we shouldnt see them either

i think a lot of horror would benefit if people were able to do things like this with franchises after people are done with them. theyre not always for everyone but i think a lot of people are fond of horror sequels. theyre just kind of a genre staple and i like what the rest of the films contributed to the lore. imagine if every horror franchise had a more open patent, like great gatsby? i think itd allow for more creativity. horror as a genre has so much world building bc it has to justify sooo much suspension of disbelief which means theres usually a lot to work with! imagine michael myers as a free character. id love to see what other writers think of his whole "fear personified" thing. if we allow more leeway with horror and less criticism at its imperfection, i think ppld enjoy it more. theyre cunt, theyre camp, and theyre fun and i consider myself a guy who likes fun

What I Liked

at the core it's just a simple story abt how being a good person can bring about good changes and a happy life, a very fairytale-like sort of story. it's very happy and idealistic, a smooth feel-good read.

how mu tianchi also gained the ability to turn into a fish and they r an entire happy fish family swimming in their gigantic fishpond... what a sweet ending, it's what they rly deserve.

li yu is just such a good kid. it's like, he's an ordinary kid with no particular abilities but he's a good, kind-hearted kid and his sincerity rly got through to the "tyrant". he's kind of dumb but at the same time i can see why mu tianchi rly fell in love w him.

mu tianchi... one of the most loving doting sort of gong i've encountered. sometimes i feel like he's way too good for li yu but like also li yu is most definitely his treasure for basically turning his life around so i can def see how he fell in love. all in all these two make a v sweet couple, the love story just makes sense n it's a lovely read.

im always happy when the transmigration is uh "explained", the visit to the modern world was a sweet finishing touch ig, even if it does seem a wee bit rushed. i appreciate that they both also got to greet li yu's dead parents and grandparents, and mu tianchi got to experience firsthand li yu's original world.

hehe the merman scene when li yu showed off his beautiful silver gold tail and entranced mu tianchi all over again... his merman form is rly definitely beautiful, like even i felt that when reading... n then they even boned like man this couple sure is kinky

also the little bit abt qiu-shi and her cat piao xue... i think this author just rly likes animals or sth, but i like that bit abt how she prob tried to release piao xue to give it a better life but piao xue chose to come back to her bc it loves its owner!! n that she took revenge on chu yanyu bc he tried to harm her cat. i like that it makes her seem more humane, like even the most evil ppl have their bottom lines.

LI YU BEING SILLY sometimes i wanna smack this guy over the head bc he's rly so dumb sometimes lmao

it felt strangely draggy at times, like 150 ch is like 50 ch too long for some of the plotlines??? like theres no fillers but somehow i feel like it's a bit too long for sth so smooth sailing. but like most plot threads r wrapped up well i think, so it's not rly an issue.

how perfunctory the author was abt li yu's background lmao like the dude rly is super ordinary, he's just an orphan w no real ties to his "current" life so he's perfectly ok transmigrating into a fish and marrying n uh birthing the tyrant's children...

audie's the one i have the most lore about. he is genuinely on many levels a professional trophy husband, it's just that...he also has a ton of skills that he can whip out like a swiss army knife. a swiss army boyfriend? he's good at business, he's incredibly good at originium arts and swinging a big axe (he would basically be a duelist defender but that specializes in arts damage), and he's way more social than both encio and gnosis, so he fills that role in their team comp... all three of them are equally determined and capable and in a way manipulative, but audie is better at obscuring it by being friendly in a way that neither of them quite have down pat. so as much as they were a little weirded out at his appearance in their affairs, they do kind of need him sometimes. i can never quite decide if they're a V, a triad, or if audie just accepts that no matter what he does encio will be a little bit married to gnosis. but either way, they are quite tight when it comes down to it. because audie's family is minor and he's the only living heir, he kind of understood that he could either work his tail off on building a family legacy (a lot of work, a lot of resources, for little guarantee of reward especially since he would never actually be able to go super far) or he could hitch himself to someone with much more pull, and make himself invaluable. he decided to go for the latter, and so he's had very little illusions about how he does have certain roles this way. he has lower standards of behavior for himself and inhibitions in some senses than, say, shealtiel, who is, well, Catholic. he's the one of them who tries to at least get on with Enya but she's leaving him on read because, well, he can be as nice as he wants but he's still her brother-in-law and not even to the sibling she likes.

audie was educated in leithanien, which is how he got so good at arts. the greataxe, i think, is a notable martial art of the fuchsfrost line. foreign education, martial skill, and general good looks are what got him to stand out as an arranged marriage prospect. (aka, he had the least depressing biodata out of every eligible noble single in kjerag.) the meet cute was that he walked in, sat down, and basically said "you need a partner for political reasons because you're now the most powerful man in the nation and you simply can't keep being the keystone of this entire country, because a human keystone can fail. if you select me as your partner, i will be your right hand arm. man. your silly rabbit. do you call me that? it's up to you" and encio was sold enough to fake marriage about it. (then, of course, they realize they get along quite well and have good teamwork and chemistry and uh oh. thinking about the how do i tell my husband i'm in love with him reddit post.)

so i like the show. i enjoy the show. i think it’s pretty silly, but so am i so that’s not necessarily a complaint. i am very attached to the show, bc i found it (only s1 had aired back then) at a time when i was dealing with a lot of EXTREME physical and emotional trauma (of which topic some more below) and then thrown into a grief hole, and as a result im not sure there’s a shark big enough for it to jump that would make me abandon it. it’s like...yea, literally my comfort show i guess! and i will always be grateful to it for that, and for leading me back into fandom and into writing fic!

large swathes of the plot do not stand up to scrutiny, and that bothers me not at all. if i wanted to watch a proper crime show, i’d go watch a crime show. and frankly if a person’s still watching this show expecting the concept of time to be treated as existing, that’s on them right?

ultimately i think the two things i love most abt this show: i. the acting is incredible & seems to be allowed to lead the plot reasonably organically ii. i cant predict what’s going to happen bc it’s batshit (which i can understand why a lot of ppl see as a flaw haha, but as someone who watches a LOT of american films/tv & can generally tell what’s gonna happen i fucking love) are often at odds.

anyhooo...i like s1 fine BUT there’s a lot of exposition and dialogue which i find v clunky. i can tho forgive a lot for first seasons (which are rarely-never my faves). i think the biggest issue i have with it/i guess the show generally is the mm lack of historicity btwn the 3 main characters? which is probs its own post but def ties into:

the point at which i went ‘oh this show is made by white ppl’ was s1e3. i was on a lot of codeine lol so idk if i wouldve clocked it earlier otherwise, or if i was just seeing deeeeeply through space and time but as @nakedmonkey has said since day dot basically: ok if something has the only latinx character as the only violent gang criminal character...like....i get what ive signed up for. and im Old so im pretty desensitised to racist tropes wandering in and out of things. and i honestly find it almost quaint how this show seems to manage to avoid stereotypes sometimes by simply not knowing abt them ahaha

but... rewatching s1 after s2 finished and having that context (particularly but certainly not only the s2 finale, of which more below)... idk. rio’s behaviour just seems pretty fucking random?! take: yea yea i love making noise let’s go bang some pots and pans blah blah blah im on facebook too vs. SHUTDOWN!!! like i didnt care when this show was fun and silly, but once youve upset me and im combing through trying to work out if he’s the stupidest person in the entire world, stuff like that sticks out?? and yes, i can find reasonings and explain it to myself (and i can have fun doing it!) but in the context of his batshit behaviour in s2: a lot of his behaviour generally seems wildly inconsistent, like the plot purpose of it is SO visible, and i think that is a flaw! but i have to acknowledge im MUCH more interested in character than plot.

i definitely think his behaviour being bananas inconsistent is casually, callously racist and as the show’s gone on it’s found a bouquet of harmful tropes to play with (what fun) but i can also acknowledge that the beth/rio dynamic wasnt an original part of it & im not sure rio was sposed to survive s1 & im almost certain he wasnt sposed to be as much a part of the show so ive got a lil sympathy for some awkward pivoting, & i think they retooled bits of both beth and rio’s characters to get matchier, which im pretty into.

nonetheless, i think s2 is probs the worst offender for nonsensical rio behaviour. the finale takes the top prize (of which more below) but like... ok can anyone explain to me what’s happening in s2e2? the ending of that ep (im going to teach you) was when i went ‘oh this show is stupid stupid’. like... am i sposed to believe that beth gave rio back the gun & then (he?) thought she was going to..... what beat boomer to death......? yea of course i can explain this to myself! he never thought she was going to manage it! it’s a test! but there’s a LOT of this.

what the fuck is he doing in s2e6? all ive got is: he REALLY wants beth to smack him in the face & doesnt know how to use his words (& also he’s very drunk.)

s2e10! park bench scene! what is happening?! episode before she threw him out! episode the next he throws her out! why??? is??? he??? being???? so???? nice???? (again! of course i can find some way to explain this to myself: well if *i* had some vague leverage plan over someone this is exactly how sweet and nice i’d be to them hahah)

but the overall thing is the whole season i was waiting for him to work out they didnt kill boomer (and try to get marry pat’s number off beth, haha). and then that he had the wrong body. and like......?????

look!!!! i love ambiguity!!! i do!!! omg do i!!!! hi!!!! BUT i love it when it’s INTENTIONAL. when it leads to SOMETHING. and im not sure that’s what the show is giving me...? and also!!! look!!! knowing what your non-pov characters are doing/thinking is a lesson *i* had to learn! i love it when stories have a grasp of what characters do/n’t know!!! s2 has annie realising that noah is fbi cos she sees him meet up with turner....who she’s not met...? and sure of course - she’s seen a photo or the girls have described him well enough or he has giant fed energy...maybe....? hmm

and then the s2 finale. ok. on a character level the thing that most annoys me is like.... kidnapping someone & handing them your only weapon & asking them to murder a fed presumably on camera IN YOUR HOME is STUPID. it’s STUPID. am i sposed to think he’s an idiot? like: it’s fucking dumb.

and from a story point of view: when the fuck did he find out about jeff? is rio omniscient but extremely drunk??????

and from a personal point of view: the knowledge that i wasnt going to quit this show. and that i was going to have to walk my rec back! me!?!?! my recs are fucking perfect 

s3! the beginning of s3 i think is pretty good on rio’s behaviour making sense! except he tells a person standing outside to get in his car for some fresh air. but ok, he’s driving drunk again! fine! fits the rest of his characterisation, sure. it felt to me like they made a conscious effort to write him consistently!!! i was very into it!!!!

& ive got a LOT of time for stuff like the hitman or boring dave -- when the plot machinations are externally-generated rather than rio-generated, his behaviour doesnt end up seeming so random bc he’s reacting to things and/or doesnt need to turn up to do something to make the girls do something else.

but the latter part of s3 into s4. hmm. look, i dont know what the original intent with wrapping up s3 was. there is really no point at which i thought rio was going to reveal he knew abt the hitman. like, i wouldve happily eaten my words! but i spent so much of s2 waiting for a reveal that he knew...anything really. burn me twice? pff good luck.

i suspect the original resolution to the hitman plot was sposed to be...better? rio apparently being a magical gps who doesnt ask qs is... dumb. i can handwave it, i can handwave a lot, but i suspect covid shooting restrictions probs played a part here?

rio’s behaviour this season seems pretty dumb to me. but it’s seemed pretty dumb and inconsistent to me for v long time. my expectations are not high lol. i think there’s a pretty reasonable chance that fitz is alive and/or rio’s put it together abt the hit (and thinks it’s romantic cos he’s a fucking idiot), but im not certain on that.

i was pretty on the fence abt the fingering scene (there were aspects of it that i really liked, including the No Dick TIll I Actually Trust You energy), but ive gotta super rec Be Good To Me by @blizabrth cos BOTH the povs like super sold me on it (and yea, should i need fic to sell me on the show? hmm idk but im used to it from the s2 finale, so)

i think a large part of what’s fucking me off is that BC of the time in which i found the show... it hurts me seeing the trauma (physical and emotional) & grief not being given due weight. it’s probably a bit silly to expect it from a relatively silly tv show (that’s literally what fic is for! haha) but... idk, i can put up with a lot when something is fun, but if you’re going to drag me into violence and angsty shit i need it be handled like that has fucking weight, and especially when im constantly being slapped in the face with SPECIFICALLY only black and brown bodies as sites of violence, my patience is extremely thin.

most of the damage ive taken personally is due to my own recklessness (so i do have a lot of empathy for this fucking idiot lol) but like.... there are certain ppl Involved who if i saw them, i think i’d straight up punch them in the teeth without thinking. im not proud of that necessarily. i dont think that’s a good thing. but... it’s accurate man. like, i wouldnt be all oooh hey wanna see the combo to my magic car safe yknow? (and not just cos i dont have a car). [and no... i did not care this much when they werent super paying attention to dean’s recovery/remembering his scar and that is bc idc abt dean. but!!! i still did sigh at it!!!]

the glee with which i will eat my words if rio is revealed to not be being an idiot is... gigantic. i dont need a lot. i dont particularly WANT rio pov (i think a lot of the desire for it is obvi bc his behaviour...is so...batshit), though i’ll take weary irritated mick pov with fucking pleasure. i dont need a tearful apology from beth, the further we get from the s2 finale, the less i can imagine anything like that happening and feeling even remotely in character/true to their dynamic/the tone of the show, though i’d take a drunk grudging ‘im vaguely glad you are alive’ with pleasure. i would v much like them to talk some stuff out, but i can cope without it. i dont need them to touch, though give me a hug and i’ll die. i just.... want... to feel like....they’re being written internally consistently? and maybe they are! i felt relatively positive abt it when s3 started, and i can see how stuff mayve been derailed by the pandemic restrictions & the cut short season. and i think the fact that they’re introducing rio’s family & backstory is potentially a positive thing, as well as the fact that he’s getting frankly too much screentime considering he’s not had a single scene with dean (I DEMAND MY TAX!!!! NAME A BAD RIO & DEAN SCENE, I WILL FUCKING WAIT)

but i am firmly at I’ll Believe It When I See It bc theyve wronged me & I Do Not Forget

(and most of all what i want is for both beth and rio to be written off the show. like. im not joking. theyre both fucking me right off.)

that all said: if you (even if temporarily) accept that beth & rio are canonically just as stupid as we keep being told they are, and tilt your head to the side..... this might be THE greatest absurdist comedy of all time.

like: writing them as morons is absolutely hilarious, im having a great time but.... that’s how stupid i have to think they are, yknow?

-  i think ive become a leetle less judgemental abt like all fiction/storyelling including this show. bc writing is fucking hard & ppl have different strengths/weaknesses & collaborative writing/storytelling certainly has its own challenges & i mean....creating art/media in capitalism certainly has its challenges & the fact that the obsessive attention to detail/depressing realities im looking for from the show are missing may well be a positive thing for the ppl involved in it haha

- i’ve definitely become less frustrated. bc i have somewhere to....put my emotions? it’s genuinely therapeutic, and i strongly recommend it to everyone, even/especially if they dont (intend to) publish it

Horse stance. THIS BITCH DESERVES THE TOP SPOT SO HERE GOES. I somehow did not make this connection until like I’m almost all the way through the book, but 扎马步 (zhā mǎ bù) or if you take the literal meaning of characters “poke horse step” is literally so well known it’s insane. I’m talking one of the first training/fighting stance that comes to a Chinese person’s mind when u mention kung fu/combat training in general well known so I rly dunno how it slipped my mind for an entire book

this particular stance is always a lil funny to me bc of the way it’s phrased in Chinese; with the 扎 “poke”, the intention is to convey a planting & sinking, steadying of the stance that’s just also funny af to me

so imagine sth u find a lil silly & funny fully becoming a flirtatious & romantic code specific to the main characters of the story? hilarity ensued; rip my friend who had to listen to my scream-laughing

Jianzhu, the architect, his name is literally pinyin for building (建筑 jiàn zhù); imagine naming ur kid Building Smith. No wonder he’s such an uptight type A

the name of Jesa’s (Kyoshi’s mom) sky bison, Longyan / 龙眼 (lóng yǎn), while directly translates to “dragon eye”, also happens to be the Chinese word for Longan fruit (which like Lychee, has cloudy, white/clear-ish flesh surrounding a dark, round pit)

Rangi’s name in the Chinese translation of the book is 燃姬 (rán jī), which itself is a basic sound translation, but these characters mean “lady on fire” or “burning lady” this is kinda cute as heck 4 me for some reason????? lil furnace lady Rangi makes me soft

…that brings us to Rangi’s mom Hei-Ran, someone who we know can be cold and calloused in getting sh*t done with some shady days in the academy, & her name may reflect that. her name could be these two characters 黑燃 (hēi rán), which translates to “black burn” or “dark burn”. talk abt obvious characteristic here; nothing more obvious than ur name amirite???

…then again it could also be 黑兰 (hēi lán, “Black Orchid”) which tbh I kinda like better bc it’s more likely to be used as a name; AGAIN, no one wants to name their kid “black burn” it really doesn’t sound as cool as you’d think

SO! After clues from the comments (thank u @taare-writes!) and help I outsourced from TikTok — Hei-Ran’s name actually could be 혜란 in Korean !! also when I put this in the translator I used, the corresponding Mandarin it gave me was 蕙兰 (hùi lán), which is a specific type of orchid (boat orchid I believe?) and SUCH A PRETTY NAME oh my

the term used for the outlaws daofei, is literally just 盗匪 (dào fěi) “thieves/bandits”; this especially tickles my friend (who’s also reading these novels) so I gotta include it for her ;))))

the daofei’s secret gathering spot next to a lake in the mountains, Hujiang, could be 湖江 (hú jiāng) “lake river” or 湖将 (hú jiāng) which if u squint at it could mean “just by the lake”. this is fun bc it’s possible the author just flipped the saying 江湖 (jiāng hú), which while directly translates to “river lake”, has a much broader & meaningful use often in 武侠 (wǔ xiá, if u know u know, but if u don’t you can think of it as samurai or traveling knight but CHINESE) lore: it is used to refer to the world of action, thrills, and adventure walked by these warriors. It’s p cool to me lmao

oh and the Lei Tai the daofei’s fight on? Just 擂台 (lèi tái) “fighting stage”, same thing as the ring in boxing but doesn’t only reference one specific type of fight

Yun’s name is p simple & straight forward, probably just 云 (yún, “cloud”); it’s also an actual last name and I know someone from Highschool with this last name :)))

While Kyoshi obviously has Japanese origins, the kanji corresponding to きょし is 虚子. the design of Govener Te’s mansion complex, the traditional earth kingdom siheyuan design that Rangi mentioned? It’s an actual traditional courtyard’d household design. I’m not the expert on this but if ur interested u can just search siheyuan and read more abt it ! v fascinating

for pen it is probably alba if he had to pick anyone? just because he can do Crazy Shit Sometimes. but pen still feels like he understands him v well!!

for agni its probably elvira! she is from a place she knows next to nothing about besides what elvira’s explained or what she’s learned from school, she is 100+ years old, yeah! while agni doesnt like fully Understand her she still thinks she’s really cool!! it was rlly nice of her to try and comfort her when she initially found out abt Rei Time. and also knitted her a pretty holster that was so nice of her!!

19. what haunts them? what doesn’t?

pen’s is home. so mf much he genuinely loves his party a lot and has gotten really attached but also like he misses home so bad it hurts. he felt like he was an intrinsic part of something that he fit perfectly and was never gonna have to give up, and he got to be w everyone he cared about all day. he’s haunted by mikolai’s wedding lol. he’s also haunted by The Shit That Went Down Pertaining To His Exile, His Subsequent Exile, Making the Pact,  Dying, Making The Pact Pt 2, The Thing He Had To Do After He Made The Pact, And Then Also Dying Again. he’s haunted by holding ori dead in his arms and bringing her back using power he now understands was from a Not That Great Place. he barely knew her then but he still thought about it all the time, and now he thinks abt it even more lol! he just is not used to life being. Like This. at all. he was a vvvvvv spoiled kid. (some nobility complex part of him is haunted by lydia! stupid jester!) 

he’s not haunted by everyone he’s been a bitch to lol, unless he vocally apologized for it later nfjnf. he’s not haunted by vargas. uh

agni is not haunted by most things and That’s On her super healthy coping mechanism! she tries to not think about her personal life with that much weight, she tries to keep it abstract in her head? but also there are some things she can’t help but get Unnamed Bad Feeling from instinctively. rei. w how last session fucking turned out lol, watching seras collapse in the doorway Will Def Become One. Moms Time, both for individual reasons. sometimes, not being accomplished, but that also filters into Moms Time. everything else tho she kind of just vibes through.

pens Official Title is penance the jester, court jester of tarbyen (and he makes sure no one forgets it lol.) everyone he grew up around had official titles so it made him feel realllyyy good abt himself that he had one too! (he likes that the party’s nicknamed him pen tho, he thinks its sweet >:) ) his Name name is camil, but only his mom n mikolai called him that, so he thinks its very like..... informal, and he likes being a Formal Title Boy, but also it makes him go all soft bc the two ppl he loved most called him that!! conflicting feelings. 

agni’s had her nickname since she was really young i think, one of those like, you’re in fantasy kindergarten and learning how to spell and your first name is rlly long, so u employ a nickname very early Kind Of Moments. her full name is agnodice and she likes it well enough! it feels very kind of like. stiff and formal to her tho. she thinks agni suits her better!

35. which party member do they worry for?

pen worries for All Of Them. he tries to follow juni when he’s having one of his (as pen puts it) “freak out moments” bc he’s scared someday it’s going to be something that really hurts him, and he wants to be there to help if it does. pen has fully accidentally triggered ori before, and he feels really bad about it, especially since her triggers literally Set Her On Fire. so you know. he tries to be really careful with his words around her, especially since the incident a couple sessions ago. also, he is Very Concerned abt all of her past stuff with the mahne that he’s recently learned abt, especially putting together all the past knowledge she’s given him abt the river and what to do in a pact and Where Exactly She Got That Info From. he’s grateful she’s not in any of that anymore, though, whatever the mahne is exactly. alba’s impulsivity worries pen n he wants to make sure alba doesnt accidentally Put Himself In A Situation accidentally w that someday. 

agni worries for theodosia, just because she seems to know a lot about the fucked up illness time thats going on and it seems to rlly effect her and she knows it cld be coming from prior past experience? she also worries for cyrus because of the whole you know. his family’s shop and home being burned to the ground Situation, even though theyve since recovered it couldnt have been good for him. worries for kai, also, because he is Small Baby Boy. but worries as in like. does so in her agni way and it may not come across as such?

40. do they enjoy poetry?

pen loves poetry he heard a lot of epics at home!! the stories were Less fun when it was about like, war and bloodshed and stuff, but he loved them when they were all pretty n flowery or like romantic 🥺

agni likes hearing poetry recited, especially when it has a specific repetitive syllable pattern she can get lost in!

pen simply be like [wants validation from nobility noises]. its his Complexes. thats why being @ ravenloft rn is so... bad for him lol bc hes getting like all the positive attention from important people hes wanted for his entire life, oops. hes literally living out a dream being asked to dance with someone so important!! he also seeks validation a lot from like powerpful women bc of growing up with his mom and how much he looked up to her and cared about her, which manifests itself a lot w wanting attention from ori and jenny (and previously w lady wachter lol) and also the lady of delights. 

growing up agni sought validation from her mothers n instructors, now (while she still wants momsvalidation) she looks for validation mostly from herself, which is kind of bad bc she never feels fully satiated w her work n accomplishments! 

69. how would they describe their party members?

for pen: ori feels like an older sister to him, hes too scared to express as much, but yeah! she is warm (he means figuratively but also lol) and Kind and Competent and Smart and above all, Safe. he defintely feels like, the safest with her than anyone else he’s encountered in his life, both i mean in the physical protection sense but moreso the emotional sense! yeah. juni is.,, complicated. at first pen was uhhh scared of him bc of the whole Sorcerer Thing, but after all of them talked abt it at jenny’s, that feeling passed and he was more just concerned for him than anything. he is Powerful and Pretty and even though he’s been thru a lot of things pen himself cant even comprehend juni’s still Soft and Understanding and pen really admires that about him! alba is Also Complicated, for different reasons. pen thinks he is Reckless and Impulsive but also Smart in his own little scheme way, and pen really appreciates him as like a constant in his life? like yeah, he is scary and concerning sometimes but he’s always Predictably as such and while pen doesn’t see alba as all that loyal in general pen is kind of blind to that stuff when it comes to ppl in relation to him, so he’s just glad he’s met someone that wants to stick with him.

for agni: cyrus is so nice to her!! he feels like a capital f Friend in her head and so far like. she’s only had one of those before so thats really cool!! he helps her out a lot and she tries to do what she can to be there for him too! it was nice of him to teach her abt Beach Swimming. theo is really cool and agni loves seeing her in her element doing Medicine Stuff she thinks she is really smart w that kind of thing and rlly respects her practice, agni’s also very interested in her magic!! she thinks dendy is small little lizard guy who sings silly songs. greatly appreciates him. she wld follow kai blindly into terrible plans because she wants to make sure this cool teen is alright , is thankful to know he can turn into a bear at will and she didnt do that on accident that one time! amadeus is confusing and hard to keep track of in her head, but at the end of the day she thinks he’s very caring and just looking out for people. adaeze is really fun to hang out with and she is both concerned and greatly impressed w her just straight up downing one of fer’s Fucked Up And Evil Potions no questions asked, bc thats something even Agni’s too scared to do. thinks her sword is very interesting in terms of the arcane, wants to see what happens w all that! elvira is super different from anyone agni’s been around but she thinks she’s an amazing artist and would love to see her home bc she talks about it so vividly!!
