Malachite Butterfly - Siproeta stelenes
A very dear friend of mine has surprised me with some lovely pictures from his Mexico vacation! Previously, this same friend has shared pictures from his trip to Australia, including a few insects: one an iconic resident of the continent and another familiar to us in North America (the Monarch Butterfly), so imagine my surprise to find more magnificent insects in my inbox. There's many new tropical Butterflies to introduce, and we're beginning the showcase with the Malachite, a remarkable green-winged Brush-Foot with a taste for sweet fruit. The dorsal side of the wing is black-colored with many lime-green patches. It's such a little beauty. By stationing small areas around its environment with fruits, it offers a chance to observe them up close and really soak in all the fine details of their body and wings.
In the wild I'd speculate that they might be skittish, but under these circumstances the fruit can even be picked up and they'll remain sipping. Perhaps watermelon and oranges are really that appealing from them; the fruits are practically sugar and water, so it's similar to puddling behavior. Moreover, they've been reported to "puddle" on bat droppings and carrion, so maybe wash your hands after you handle one. According to observations and similar photograph submissions from iNaturalist, this Butterfly might be mistaken for a fellow Brush-Foot -The Dido Longwing (Philaethria dido) - where their ranges overlap. To distinguish between the two, the Malachite's dorsal wings feature more black and less green. Keep this in mind as from the underside, they both appear similar at a passing glance with large green-colored scales divided by borders of white and brown. The Malachite's body also has brown lines on it, while the Longwing has black lines.
While this Butterfly may not be red, I'm wishing a lovely and Happy Valentine's Day. I guess the malachite-green is meant as a complementary color of red this year? Maybe the Scarlet Malachite Beetle can convince you.
Pictures were taken on February 11, 2024 in Mexico with a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. On Friday, another tropical specie of golden magnificence!

YM SIte, UT. Sticking with the Cave Valley Style, here’s another iconic glyph located in a high, shallow alcove. The central anthropomorph contains yellow (limonite or ocher), red (hematite or iron oxide), and what looks to me like blue (malachite or azurite) but is most likely white (gypsum or caliche). My editing may have given a blue tint to the white pigment. You can see the white (blue) around the outside of the body and in the dots above the head, which is another common characteristic of CVS anthropomorphs. The two red spots above the shoulders could be earrings or jewelry. Notice the small yellow figure to the left.
The rest of the site contains a mix of petroglyphs and graffiti, but there are some very old gyphs here. Slide 3 shows a beautiful concentric circle design and a figure that both exhibit full repatination, where the exposed rock surface has developed a new varnish that matches the rest of the rock surface. Slide 4 shows one of the only examples of Cave Valley Style figures in petroglyph form that I know of (the triangle forms towards lower center).

Apologies for the mile-long ask, friend. Also sorry if the topic was a bit much, i just got caught up rambling. No hard feelings hopefully!
Instead, as far as Sands' powers go, i think the sand/glass manipulation is super cool! Would she also have basic Quartz abilities, being a type of Jasper? Have you thought of any other traits that Sands shares with Lapis?
it's all good!
i'm trying to think of lapis abilities that would be plausible for sands to have. if she's on a beach, she can form a giant hand out of sand and make it as loose or dense as she wants. she can't have water wings so likely can't fly. she might be able to terraform a little bit using glass and sand instead of water. her glass shards that she throws like daggers are her own version of malachite's icicles.
Tumblr media
of course she can do the iconic quartz spin dash.
sands's abilities, especially with glass works like "if you attack me, just know you're going to hurt yourself in doing so." she brings up a glass shield that you might not even notice in the heat of the fight because it's completely see-through and you hit it with your fist and it shatters, then those shards cut you up and she throws the falling pieces at you to stop you from landing your punch.

PHOTOSHOOT: MARINA FOR NYLON MAGAZINE
I mean, you guys. How great does Marina look here? For Marina's ever NYLON cover, she paved her own path and went for a more retro look for the magazine.
Photography was done by Damon Baker. Styling by Santa Bevacqua and Shawna Ferguson, glam by Ozzy Salvatierra, hair (look at all those adorable pins!) by Fallon Toni Chavez and lastly, nails by Stephanie Stone.
Tumblr media
I love how fresh, confident, retro, fit and coiffed up she is here for this spread.
For the cover look, we got Marina in a Dior Pre-Fall 2015 white, beige, orange & black striped rib stretch woven sweater with turtleneck design.
Tumblr media
You know how much I love a good mish-mash of pieces that create one look together.
Her coat and skirt belong to Fall/Winter 2015 collections. The first one is by Holly Fulton and is the Gaze repeat print silk and wool coat with red Mongolian fur collar and cuffs, while the latter hails from the French house of Vionnet and is a plaid maxi skit with electric-blue mohair strips and delicate black lace panels.
Underneath her coat M wears the Fortnight Fall/Winter 2014 Vega demi bra made from their signature chevron jacquard lace!
Tumblr media
The third look is from Emilio Pucci's Pre-Fall 2015 lookbook. I could totally see the majority of this collection on Marina for this particular shoot but I'm glad they went with one of my favorite sets!
A striped silk dress with roomy, tunic-like silhouette with lace-up neck in striking shades of magenta, blue and pale grey ($1,520.00 - sold out). Of course, she also rocked the matching flared trousers ($554.00 - sold out).
Tumblr media
Throughout the shoot, Marina rocks the Cartier Amulette de Cartier 18k rose-gold band ring with malachite and brilliant-cut diamond of 0.09 carats.
Tumblr media
Add one more fun printed ensemble to Marina's spread with NYLON.
This 70s-inspired chevron multi metallic jacquard coat with contrasting black panels ($1,540.00 - sold out) and matching flare pants ($495.00 - sold out) hail from Giambattista Valli's Pre-Fall 2015 lookbook – an ode to 1970s icon Mariana Schiano!
Tumblr media
The clever play with prints is truly something to be adored.
For the final look our girl looks more than amazing in this diagonally striped silk jacquard blazer ($2,285.00 - sold out) and culottes pulled straight from Dsquared²'s Pre-Fall 2015 collection!
Underneath, Marina rocked a silk blouse version of DKNY's Laura bandana print flare dress.
Tumblr media
Marina injected even more fun into her outfit with the shoe department!
The appropriately named Solar strappy sandals are from Charlotte Olympia. I love the typical Charlotte quirk factor on these stunners!

If Watts is the leader, how does the situation mirror Weiss acting petulant about not being leader of RWBY? Perhaps if the team name was CHTW (chateau). The hex code is BBB1A8
I do get other names fit better but WTCH is way too iconic not to, even if Watts isn't the leader
But it goes much the same, except Watts has less reason to believe himself leadership quality. He looks down on Cinder for being young and for being brash. She's a lot of power and brute force where he prefers meticulous planning with backups after backups. Watts thinks this makes him the better leader and refuses to go along with her plans but he's shut down pretty hard by Professor Malachite. Let's face it, he's an asshole and who's going to want to follow his leadership? Yes, he has valid critiques of Cinder's tactics but people follow her charisma where he has none. His backups after backups are perfect for support, much like the rest of his skill set.
Honestly, a lot of Watt's attitude also stems from having to start from scratch. He was going to be a genius engineer in control of Atlas' top military projects alongside his team. It's... weird having to learn a new dynamic where everything before felt easy. He needs to think back to Pietro and how he supported his project leadership rather than his own bitterness over Cinder not being him

RWBY Redesign - The Malachite Twins
Tumblr media
Twins I wished to return to the story but there are already so many characters. Melanie and Miltia are redesigned and I think this is going to be my last RWBY Redesign for a while, so hopefully, this is enough for 3 months or so-
Tumblr media
Main factors I have when redesigning the Malachite Twins!
Primary Color: Red and White (Any of team RWBY’s colors must be included too in some way)
Environment: Modern for Vale
Their clothes have to be combat orientated and match her style, they must be theoretically and/or easy to cosplay. The animators must also have an easy time animating them in their attire.
For Melanie I wanted her to be a mix of Yang/Weiss vibes where she looks like a boxer with similar traits to Yang’s Vol1 look, and Weiss’ skirt but shorter since Melanie’s old design was an old draft for Weiss.
For Miltia I wanted her to have an old western bartender vibe similar style to her mom; Lil’ Miss Malachite. I know I’m surprised they’re related but I never read Roman Holiday and personally don’t give a crap about spin-off books from RWBY.
I wanted the twins to still have something matching so of course they got the same shoes but different colors.
Let me critique the redesign though since it’s not perfect (feel free to add to this)
Originally I didn’t want the girls to have feathers so they wouldn’t have connections to Qrow/Raven but the feathers were too iconic and I added them last decision than a natural plan.
Melanie looks less protected for combat since she did have shoulder armor but I feel as though she would look too much like Tifa.
Even tho there’s a lot of detail to Miltia’s dress with the newspaper font I still think the dress is too plain and just missing something…
This is like C- on the tier for me, I do love Melanie’s look the most and Miltia appears the same or so but this was still very fun. It makes me wish the Malachite twins return even tho they’re just bodyguards.

Between the way Raksura Queens managed and can draw in other Raksura into the main colony bond, the Fell abilty to mislead groundlings and mind control Kethel and Dakti, and how Malachite's powers function, I wonder if the Forerunners had the power to enthrall others. It just makes sense.
Ok so we know that the Raksuran Aeriat aren't particularly culturally minded, and Fell even less. Yet the Forerunners had some semblance of culture - their repeating flower motifs, their books, among other things. Shade, the closest to any forerunner we've met, is the only active Aeriat reader we know. So how can we reconcile these two facts about their daughter species and the ancestral species? Well, it becomes easy if one considers that Forerunners can enthrall.
If forerunners, particularly their Queens, can enthrall people, they can acquire knowledge and culture very quickly. They themselves don't really need to have a mind for culture. They can appreciate it no big deal, but coming up with the ideas and such is so much work. Why do that when you can create giant weapons of mass destruction and fortresses to keep eldritch abominations at bay (the supposed enthralled groundlings are doing all the manual labor btw). This would also reconcile the "Aeriat are lazy" stereotype Arbora have. If you can enthrall, you don't really need to do the hard labor. Other than mind controlling others to do it for you that is. Which is tiring. So better to sleep it off no? Maybe that's part of the origin Aeriat sleep so much.
Enthralling groundlings to do work for you, to love you, makes them vulnerable. Perfect opportunity to get a snack or two if you're hungry.
So yeah, Forerunners might have been mind controllers. How that fit in with those that became Raksura, idk. It's possible Arbora are resistant, that they need how to play with it, or maybe cause of the war, the Aeriat were desperate and were willing to make concessions in order to survive. Malachite mentions that the powers she used to kill Fell are very costly for her to Jade in Harbors of the Sun - if so, there is a biological advantage to lose such powers if you get into a symbiotic relationship with the Arbora (and interbreed with them, becoming one species). It could also explain, if Consolation and Ranea are to be examples, why Forerunner Queens have a groundling form and not Arbora form. I wrote a writeup on reddit that I plan to transfer to tumblr eventually with a similar argument in mind that Arbora magic forms are very costly, and similarly, so would Forerunner magic. Hence an energy conserving groundling form. Upon becoming Raksuran, Queens benefitted from an Arbora form as no doubt as interpersonal fighters, it's better to have scales and spines in both forms than just in one.
Basically, Forerunners likely had some intellectual pursuits - magic, especially mind magic manifesting in enthrallment and mind control/uniting the colony etc., and led to advancements such as their cities, their technology etc. However, the work to create said cultural icons and artistry is not innate to them, and they absorb them via enthrallment which they in turn use to control groundlings (to make the cities etc.). In other words, they've got some ideas, but refuse to put the work in. In becoming Fell/Raksura these pursuits were lost (cause it nearly annihilated their whole race) and eventually culture evolved so that Arbora were exclusively industrious (in that they come up with the ideas) whereas Aeriat exclusively did the managerial work if that makes sense. No similar social structure emerged for the Fell, instead a predatory mind control over their own people, hence the way they are.

Lapis Lazuli
1 - For starters? Out the gate, I roleplay this character as ace. Did years ago in the SU fandom and I see no reason to change her. I will ship her and more or less smut with her still, however, but be picky and be sensible about it as I did prior. Regardless, and here’s my personal message to anyone who has a problem with this: Ace people have dated, had sex, or been repulsed are varied and not a monolith, etc. The amount of weird control I see over shipping Ace characters, sex lives is fucking creepy, but also I understand if it’s disregarded or sexualized/handled poorly and I hear you, I can relate to that in my own, but not exact experiences. But those outside of being ace who do not understand nuance and are incredibly aggressive or annoying about this? Fuck off and quit talking shit about stuff you don’t get, take more than five seconds looking up a definition to learn about how actual people live. Anyway, you’re free to ask me if you want to ship, but I will say if I don’t think it’ll work I’ll tell you out the gate. I will just say there are gems just canonically involved with people, so it’s not because she’s alien. I just hrm, can’t really see her into people a lot of the time other than in certain ways I can’t really say is ‘down-bad’, though could be willing.
2 - I roleplay Lapis more or less with the ending of SU but also my original characterization, I believe before the Malachite arc ended years and years ago. She’s a bit fighty, lonerish, but incredibly loving if close, bit of a goofball, memer, more below etc. That being said? My Lapis is stand-alone. She is not to be presumed to be living or with Peridot, Bismuth or otherwise and isn’t a Crystal Gem. She fights for the people she cares about, but it’s nothing canon changing other than motivations, relationships or what she identifies with in terms of factions etc. I roleplayed this character for her potential and friendship with Steven and still do. Most canon-compliant Stevens I’ll accept out the gate but at least ask me first.
3 - This character is fairly powerful to being overpowered? Bit of a glass cannon if physically hit though, so bit of a warning if on Earth for example or other heavy water-based planet.
4 - I will have this character curse occasionally, as Lapis is probably one of the few who would. But I’ll try not to go crazy with it. 5 - Oh right Jasper is also in the wrong, but I will say that Lapis abused the ever living heck out of her with Malachite. I am not going to skirt around that and if you try to say otherwise or have a problem with it? Do not approach me for this character, as I embrace every aspect of a character if I take them up as I like. As Lapis is a victim, yes, but it does not make her weak, if anything? It made her one of the more formidable characters of the series and dangerous.
Tumblr media
Do I want them to die: Nah. Stakes can be high but SU has no real death other than skirting the censors for shatterings. Death can occur in rps so long as it isn’t too gorey though. Just have them pop like a balloon or something into paste if shot with a laser or like comically smushed etc. Will I have/get icons: I have them Tag: tide reformed (Multiverse, after the events of SU default verse) tide formed (Homeworld Verse, Prior to Meeting Steven and the mirror) Age: 10k+ Years in terms of age. Sex: Nothing. She’s a rock. Gender: Fine with any pronouns, he/she. Race: Gem Race - Subcaste: Lapis Lazuli Sexuality: Ace. Personality traits: Extremely loyal. Loving. Distrustful of outsiders, people or even other Gems at first until she knows their intentions. Can be incredibly selfless, but also selfish. Can enter toxic relationships at times, especially if it’s her in control in terms of power or wrestling power into her control. Unforgiving, grumpy at times though is not incapable of forgiving people. Can hold a grudge. Has deep guilt regarding certain things. Tends to forget certain people she doesn’t hold much regard for. Brutal beyond words if pushed or she sees the need to be, is not canonically above torture. Is a touch unstable at times in terms of anger from being in isolation for six thousand years, but has immense willpower as she’s one of the few who didn’t go outright insane. Enjoys memes. Art if you could call it that in the form of ‘Meep-Morps’ and other activities in random garbled words. Likes memes even if she misunderstands them, phrases, words even if she misuses or misremembers them. Deadpan sense of humor or grimness but also can mess with people. Laidback, likes to be lazy and lounge. Likes jokes, humor, a little immature honestly for what she’s willing to get into for some good fun. Mental traits: Gem Mentality, she isn’t human by any means. Physical traits: Pretty slim, petite, inhuman body type but not overtly so. Flat-chested, thickish legs and all around a smaller body. Around 5′1 to 5′2 and has a free-spirited but mature beauty to her despite her personality. Powers: All of this is simply here canon powers as this character does not need help other than flavor for a few unsaid things. Enhanced Condition - greater strength, speed, and durability but varies gem to gem Immune to disease - age. Bubbling - can bubble objects, gems or large objects like other gems can. Shapeshifting - can shapeshift form, parts of herself. Regeneration - reforming and such after poofing. Gravity Shifting - adjusts to gravitational changes. Weapon Summoning - she’s never had a weapon summoned before as she usually just has water. It’s presumed she has one though, however, and it’s basically a whip-sword that moves and flows like water. And can be manipulated as such and use her hydrokinesis, it’s usually used like that of a razor ring in self-defense when there’s no water around. Hydrokinesis - Lapis is exceptionally strong in this regard it seems even compared to other gems. Most likely from being more early generation gems than the later ones. It’s a self-explaining ability but the exact limit is not known but it’s planetary for the manipulation she’s capable of. She could potentially manipulate high-density liquid entities but I will say that blood is not water-like enough for her to do this to and it’s more intended for liquid metal and minerals such as moving tectonic plates since she’s a terraforming gem. Water Generation - she can generate a certain amount of water from her gem, but it’s unknown. She usually use’s this with a combo with her weapon if forced into tapping into it. Water Form Manipulation - she can cause water to turn into ice or even use it as deadly projectiles. Thermal Manipulation - she is capable of causing water to steam or boil. Hydromimicry - she can create clones against her enemies. Water Bubbles -  she can use these to imprison gems, people, granted they’ll drown if not given air. Water-Walking - she can walk on water and even allow others to walk on water with her. Water Wings - she can fly using a form of water wings and like other things, she can manipulate, stretch and even punch with them. Memory Projection - can project memories onto a mirror-like surface or still enough water. Pathokinesis Resistance - she is immune to emotional manipulation such as Blue Diamond’s empath attacks. This is not to be confused with White Diamond’s ability to control other gems. High Nobility Status - Lapis Lazulis judging by their demeanor for the others we’ve seen and the vast amount of power they have? Seem to be Blue Diamond’s higher gems, so when it matters. I will say that Lapis is pretty high up there in terms of caste and privilege. Motivations: To be free. To move past what’s happened. To belong, to find purpose beyond her original intent. To find what’s considered home. Backstory: The entire wiki for her other than being with Peridot, Bismuth, at the barn. I primarily have her come and go, then mostly show up to help Steven, make a few friends but more or less just have her in the background. She comes when she’s needed or wants to be there and gets better about it as time goes on, along with those approaching her consistently does she become more social. She never considers herself a Crystal Gem but she told Homeworld to eat it basically.
