THere’s not much fics about the Milkoviches growing up in a healthy environment in general. Even less with Mickey’s mom being alive and there for Mickey. The only one that kind of fits we could think of is:

Edit: @jeremiahsglasses suggested the fault in our southside - Ian Milkovich grew up a sheltered child and Mickey Melnyk and his twin sister Mandy grew up with nothing but love and adventure living with their single mother.

I wrote a fic in Italian based on this and I thought to share with you the prompt: Kid!fic in which Mickey associates the colour red with his mom's happiness but Terry in some way screws up (as always. the /how/ it's up to you and your creativity), and Mickey gets scared and decides to hate that colour - the idea is basically that happiness is something weak and temporary. Then, in his teenage years, he meets Ian and everything changes.

Yevgeny never failed to wake the Milkovich house at least once per night. Of course, Mickey always made Svetlana take care of it. That baby was not his problem.

Unfortunately, Svetlana was not taking Mickey’s shit tonight. “Your turn.” She growled, jabbing his chest with a finger. “You soothe baby. I sleep.”

But by the time he rolled out of bed and into the hall, the crying had subsided and in it’s place he heard a familiar tune. He hadn’t heard anyone singing that song in at least six years. Not since his mother died.

As he stood in the doorway, he saw Yevgeny’s face resting on Mandy’s shoulder. God. He wouldn’t admit it, but the kid looked just like him.

Mandy had her back turned, swaying Yev to sleep. As he got closer he could make out the words. “Take your time, don’t live to fast, troubles will come and they will pass, you’ll find a best friend and you’ll find love.” He couldn’t help but laugh at her changing the word “woman” to “best friend.”

Mandy whipped around startled by Mickey’s laughter. “Shit, Mickey, don’t fucking sneak up on me like that.”

“All those years singing me that dumbass song every night, and I go off and find a man instead. Think mom’s flicking me off from hell?” Mickey asked with a sardonic smirk.

Mandy frowned. “You were always her favorite, Mick. And anyway, she wasn’t like dad, y’know? If she’s flicking you off, it’s because you didn’t pay attention to said dumbass song. Lying to everyone about who you are? You think mom would have ever pretended to be something she wasn’t because people didn’t like it? She was an unapologetic bitch.”

Mickey raised both eyebrows as he began to back away, muttering, “yeah, yeah, fuck off.”

“How about a ‘thanks’ for getting up and singing your baby to sleep, asshole?”

Mickey flicked her off over his shoulder as he walked back to bed.

But a few weeks later, after a pretty memorable coming home party for Terry at the Alibi, he felt like the man his mother had wanted him to be.

Mama Milkovich headcanon: Okay i only really have the frame work of this, you can fill in the rest of the detail if ya want. okays mama milkovich did her best to be a good mom/protector to mickey and mandy (i head canon them as twins). She was very young when she had her kids (14/15) and Terry was older (18) and very abusive. When terry was on the war path, Mama milkovich would endanger herself even more by stepping in between him and the kids, causing her more beatings. (1/2)

(2/2) Mama milkovich died at the age of 24 when mickey and mandy where about 10 yrs old. she died of cancer that had gone undetected. mickey was very attached to his mother. Her sudden passing was especially very hard on him. After her death is when Mickey really started to get himself into trouble. Started to harden himself to the world and to his own emotions. For the first few yrs after their moms death mandy kept to herself, but once puberty hit is when she really started getting in trouble.

okay, so I believe that (for some reason I can’t explain, it’s just a feeling) Terry Milkovich genuinely loved their mother but yes, he was obviously abusive (only to get worse after she died). When Mickey and Mandy’s mom died (which I am so curious about??? was it drugs like some people think? was it suicide? was it cancer? did she just leave one day and Terry told all the kids she was dead? I NEED TO KNOW THESE THINGS.) anyway when she died, Mickey stepped up as the wall between Mandy and their father. Mickey took the brunt of the beating with Mandy unfortunately getting got in the crossfires when Mickey obviously couldn’t step in for horrible reasons. 

I just wonder if the Milkoviches were ever a happy family? I mean, it was mentioned that Mickey was in little league… did his mother take him to the games? did his brothers play too? did Mickey’s mom walk him and Mandy to preschool and kindergarten? did she make them snacks? did she cut the crust off of Mickey’s peanut butter sandwich just like he likes? did she and Mandy every bake cookies together? obviously ian knows something about the Milkovich mother but does he ever talk about her with Mickey? does Mickey have a picture of her somewhere that he only looks at on the bad days? WHAT WAS HER NAME? 

i just have so many questions and we are never going to get the answers and we are going to have to live through headcanons.

mama!milkovich playing hide and seek with her kids whenever terry comes home, so they would hide from him thinking they're playing a game. and she tells them not to come out unless she finds them! and they stay hidden and after terry's asleep she finds them and they all cuddle in one couch, staying up late at night!!! (she doesn't want to go to her room with terry.. :()

D: mama milkovich probs dosed terry with sleeping pills or smth so he’d stay asleep while she made her kids hot chocolate and midnight mac n cheese bc she loves her babies and she’s super ruthless. letting them all pile on each other to watch pg-13 movies and fall asleep stuffing chip and popcorn and whatever they want in their mouths bc she feels so bad for the difficult life her bbs have :( probably fed them twizzlers and fun dip and other candy for breakfast (mickey and joey and iggy ate that shit up; mandy and tony always begged for pancakes, which she invariably made) and took them out to baseball games and braided mandy’s hair and taught them all how to read and i’m!! so!! emotional!! i love mama milkovich!!!!

It would be interesting if they were to go into what happened to their mom, but they may not do that. One of the producers stated that the thing that separates the Gallagher's from the Milkovich's is Fiona, she's the mother figure and that the Milkovich's never had a mother figure... so we might assume if they never mention her, that their mom died when they were really young.

True.My only thought was that perhaps that's why Mickey has such a huge problem with Ian going to a psych ward.

Alright fellow Shameless watchers, specifically Gallavich shippers 'coz you'll probably know better than anyone, do we have a name for mama Milkovich? I'm just curious. And where is she? The show seems a bit confused as well. If I remember correctly in one episode she was going to pick Iggy up from juvie and then in another Mandy says she split years ago. And I'm not sure I'd the show ever said it but there's quite a bit of speculation that she died. So what do you think?
