Alanis On Education

Obomsawin’s belief in the educational capacity of documentary lies at the core of her work. As a filmmaker, she emphasises that her aim is "to make sure that our people are heard. I want to expose the injustices. I look for social changes. [My role] is to make sure that these films, these documents, are used in the educational system." (Harewood, 2003) Early into her career with the NFB, Alanis helped develop multimedia educational kits for classrooms, with short films, photographs, colouring books, activities, and objects that all were connected to an Indigenous community. She worked with the Líl̓wat Nation in British Columbia and the Atikamekw of Manawan band of the Atikamekw Nation in south-western Quebec to develop their own respective education kits. In an interview with Tom Powers (2021), when asked about education and her films, Obomsawin adds this: “My main interest all my life has been education, because that's where you develop yourself, where you learn to hate or love.” Not wanting other Indigenous children to go through what she had to in public school, her practice of filmmaking began.

Page 11. --- Bush Crime Discovered ---- Fire Wardens and Guest Carry Victim Eight Miles to Hospital --- St. Michel Des Saints, Que., May 15. 0 Three fire wardens and a French-Canadian priest, taking turns in carrying through eight miles of bush a trapper who had been shot in the face, reached this settlement Tuesday and the trapper was rushed to hospital at Joliette, 40 miles south.

Indian Detained The 30-year-old trapper, Georges Dulac, was found unconscious in the woods north of the settlement, which is 90 miles north of Montreal. The badly-wounded man was found by two fire wardens patrolling a section if a timber belt owned by a paper company.

Provincial detectives, sent here from Montreal to investigate the shooting were reported to have detained an Indian, believed to be a member of a nearby reservation.

Meanwhile, a report received from Joliette Hospital said Dulac had recovered consciousness and apparently was in no immediate danger although his wound was said to be serious.

Found by Wardens Dulac was found by two fire wardens named Leblanc. Thinking that Dulac was dying, the Leblancs immediately summoned Abbe J. B. Chagnon, cure of St. Michael des Saints. Later they were joined by J. Longpre, another fire warden, and the four brought Dulac to the settlement.
