可她做不到，像周围人一样把自己的猫装到铁盒里，锁上折断钥匙丢掉。她说，这是唯一留下来温暖着她的生命。她说，挠痕传来的阵阵刺痛才能让她在灰霾笼罩下清醒。

冒险家是特立独行的。

——他们总排斥特立独行的人。那些独特的个体，眼中的光芒最终消逝。

The hardest thing we can do is own our power and identity. ⠀ The term writer/author sits uncomfortably on me sometimes. I wonder who I am to consider myself a writer; I think I am still an amateur. ⠀ It is effortless to play small; you lose very little, and unexpected wins become more epic. The only problem is the small box you squeezed yourself into becomes super painful. Any comfort you found in that small space starts to feel suffocating. ⠀ Last fall, I asked all of you on social media if you would be interested in attending a workshop on writing, poetry, and creating. Everyone said yes, and I had a lot of DM asking for dates and location information. I was very excited to plan it and then... ⠀ I completely chickened out. ⠀ I listened to the voice in my head, that asked "who was I and what did I know to think I was "expert" enough to organize this?" I completely got stuck in my head and broke a promise to all of you, who responded. I didn't have the faith that you all had in me and didn't see myself as someone who was an expert. ⠀ The thing about surrounding yourself with real connections, is they don't let you play small. They push you and make you question, "why not you?" So, with their help and a heart that refused to let me get comfortable in my box, I got over myself. I remembered that the whole reason I wanted to do the workshop in the first place was to create a community that could share and support each other. ⠀ So - this is my very long apology for the delay in organizing the workshop. Your Poetic Pick - Small Pleasures . I love the little things about love. The way just seeing someone can brighten the darkest of days. It's not the the grand gestures, but the small little things. I have mentioned before that I watch Korean dramas, and there is this line that almost all dramas have. Someone will ask one of the leads, why they love the other person and the lead will say simply - "because s/he is x." ❤️It makes my heart melt the idea that a person does not love you for all  these reasons but because you are a unique combination of things that make you, well you. There is no one else like you and you don't need to check off a list to be loved.  . . As someone who is opening my heart this year, these words always remind me that I don't need to have everything checked off in order to feel loved. As someone who needs everything to be perfectly lined up before I do anything (except my poetry 🤭) this is a pretty hard lesson for me to learn. Working on it though 🤗. . . Your Poetic Pick - Fear . . PC: Max Pixel . . . In silence do we learn our absolute truths. Being comfortable in silence is something that I am struggling with this year. It makes you embrace your insecurity. . . I am turning 40 this year, which is both insane and exciting. Since it is a big “10” - a part of me feels like this year I need to do more, have my sh*t together more, be a better adult. Instead, I am more confused, feel like I have more to lose and I am not where I want to be. I didn’t end up completing the Midnight NYC challenge in time and as I have told you guys I have been struggling with writers block. Your Poetic Pick - Tamil . . If this feels a bit disjointed, maybe it is meant to be. I love Tamil but have a strange relationship with it. I am Tamil - my ethnicity, my identity, my sense of self BUT at the same time I am not - I don’t speak it, don’t fully get the culture and never really grew up in a Tamil land (I lived in Nigeria before Canada). Tamil is a nuanced experience for me and maybe why I couldn’t really write it simply. . The beginning of the poem is a reference to the Tamil Alphabet - “The vowels are termed as 'uyir elutukkal' ('uyir' meaning 'life' or 'soul') and the consonants are called 'mei elutukkal' ('mei' meaning 'body') - this terminology has very deep linguistic and philosophical implication!” (Source: Wiki University) . I really wanted to write this poem in Tamil, as least a transliteration of it but I don’t YET know all the words to create my Tamil poem. It is a goal for 2019 though - wish me luck. . . . Your Poetic Pick - Connection . I had mentioned before that I lost my mom at a very young age. I don’t really have a lot of memories of my childhood - God gave me the gift of forgetting, I guess. I don’t remember a lot about my mom, and as a child of immigration, I didn’t grow up with communal memories or shared stories from extended family. In many ways, my mom is a collage of stories that I piece together from other’s memories. Every time I hear stories about her I desperately search for a connection, a shared trait, a commonality, a link between her and I. My extended family will tell me I remind them of her and I want to be like “how?”; “Can you categorize it, and explain it, so that I can re-examine it later?” I take their words and make them gems, hidden in spaces in heart, taking them out to scrutinize when I am trying to figure out who I am. . Your Poetic Pick - Self-love . You guys know I was suffering from writer's block trying to write for this post. I have a terrible habit, in the 10 seconds the words travel from my mind to my fingertips, I am already judging them. They don't feel like enough, or they feel too simple, too complex, too... Trusting my writing is an every growing path for me, and like self-love, I don't think it will ever have an end point. It is a process and the days that I can just write, are the days that I am happiest. Don't get me wrong, sometimes the things I create at that moment is absolutely terrible and resonate with NO ONE but, to me, they are some of my best pieces.
