Please tell me if you're seeing this, too. Today I found out that the Archives of Ontario digitised more of the pictorial material in their Simcoe family fonds collection, and among tons of sketches and watercolours by the lifelong prolific Elizabeth and some that weren't in her style, but may have been works by friends or her children, there are these three silhouettes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To state the obvious, the sitters seem to have been portrayed by the same artist, and were a group of two women and a gentleman.
The two women, wearing a simlar bun-like hairstyle, also share similar facial features; both have the same chin and nose. Only the volume of the hair, the softer line between chin and neck in the first woman and the suggestion of a sheer shawl imply that she may be older than the second lady.
The gentleman is rather portly with more than a hint of a double chin and wears a queued wig.
Now, I was curious as to who these people could be, and...
Could they be Samuel Graves, Margaret Graves and Elizabeth Simcoe?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hairline of the wig rising from the forehead at an almost right angle and chin seem very similar. I'm not quite sure about the nose, but that might have to do with the shadows in the portrait.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Same pointy chin, same rather remarkable nose.
Sadly I have, save for an almost cartoonishly exaggerated doodle of her as an old woman, never seen another portrait of any sort of Margaret Graves.
However, assuming that I could be correct and these are Samuel and his adoptive niece, then it would only make sense for the second woman to be Margaret. Besides, Elisabeth had, save for two paternal aunts, no female relatives of whom you'd expect any sort of facial resemblance. Why would any of the two paternal aunts be depicted with Elizabeth's maternal aunt's husband?
If I'm correct here, and the three are The Three, then these silhouettes were probably made by Mary Anne Burges during one of her extended stays with the Graves' whenever she needed to escape her somewhat troublesome home life. If Mary Anne is the artist, these would have had to have been made prior to 30 December 1782, when Elizabeth (then still Gwillim) married her uncle's godson, a certain John Graves Simcoe. In that case, the Archives of Ontario would be wrong by a full decade, having dated the silhouettes to the 1790s.
Now, I could be wrong of course, because naturally I want my theory to be true, but if I were correct, that would be quite exciting.
Please do tell me what you think!

Thirsty God (Margaret St. Clair) "After the main character, Brian, assaults an alien girl, he takes refuge from her family in a "shrine" that's actually an ancient biological processor, and the process wasn't designed for humans. When he wakes up he finds that he's a lot bigger than he used to be and incredibly thirsty. Thinking it's a trick he decides to get up, but can't make his muscles obey him. A little while after that he's visited by a plunp, a toadlike creature who forces the excess moisture into his body. Even though his body is thirsty for the plunp's moisture, he feels (correctly) as if he is being poisoned by it. When after several hours the plunp leaves he feels bloated by all the water he has absorbed and his body is completely stiff and immobile. Although relieved that his torment has ended, he knows that many more plunp will follow and he can do nothing to prevent it. For the rest of the rainy season Brian passively and helplessly absorbs the plunp's moisture while his thoughts turn inward and violently self-destructive. Meanwhile, his sight and hearing slowly deteriorate and his body becomes permanently bloated.
As the rainy season comes to an end Brian is relieved when the plunp finally stop visiting him. His body becomes dry and dusty and begins to shrink, and he begins to experience blackouts which he dares to hope are a prelude to death and a final release from his suffering. Brian is not dying but merely entering a state of estivation, from which he will eventually awaken to the first of many more years of service to the plunp."
The Sandman (Damian Graves) "John and Sarah grow curious about the man who wins the local sand-sculpting competition every year. When they investigate, they discover his grim secret; all of his realistic animal sculptures are built around a real dead animal, be it a beached octopus or dead stray dog. When they confront him, he swears that the animals were already dead, and promises not to make any more sculptures of dead animals. Unfortunately for the kids, he didn't say anything about (formerly) live humans…
Extremely unpleasant ending, describing John's unblinking eye covered over by the thinnest layer of sand, staring at but not seeing the faces of the mourners gathered at the sand memorial to him and his sister."

I vote we put a cage over her grave like they did to keep suspected witches and vampires in.

Tumblr media
Crack open your spell book and enter the world of the illustrious Galileo Academy for the Extraordinary. There's been a murder on campus, and it's up to the students of Galileo to solve it. Follow 18 authors and 18 students as they puzzle out the clues and find the guilty party.
Professor of Magical History Septimius Dropwort has just been murdered, and now everyone at the Galileo Academy for the Extraordinary is a suspect.
A prestigious school for young magicians, the Galileo Academy has recently undergone a comprehensive overhaul, reinventing itself as a roaming academy in which students of all cultures and identities are celebrated. In this new Galileo, every pupil is welcome—but there are some who aren't so happy with the recent changes. That includes everyone's least favorite professor, Septimius Dropwort, a stodgy old man known for his harsh rules and harsher punishments. But when the professor's body is discovered on school grounds with a mysterious note clenched in his lifeless hand, the Academy's students must solve the murder themselves, because everyone's a suspect.
Told from more than a dozen alternating and diverse perspectives, The Grimoire of Grave Fates follows Galileo's best and brightest young magicians as they race to discover the truth behind Dropwort's mysterious death. Each one of them is confident that only they have the skills needed to unravel the web of secrets hidden within Galileo's halls. But they're about to discover that even for straight-A students, magic doesn't always play by the rules. . . .

Hello!! I've come with questions for the ask post! 14, 24/25, 27 :)
Ah, thank you, friend! :D
14. Why are you are interested in history?
I think I told the story before, but the underwhelming answer is that I just cannot recall ever having not been interested in history. A professor I know quite well, and with whom I had a bit of a chat after class in undergrad once, asked me "how did you know?" as if being interested in history were some magical ability one discovers at some point in one's life. Unable to come up with a witty reply to the question, I merely shrugged and said that I always had been. The face in the houndstooth-patterned sports jacket with mismatching tie and shirt smiled benevolently at me. "It was the same for me," he said, and that was that. Sorry my reply isn't more original!
24. Who do you consider to be one of the most underrated historical figures?
If I have to limit myself to just one, I am going to pick a woman: Mary Baddeley! I would love to see what an extensive study of her might unearth. Usually a mere footnote in the history of the powerful man in her life, I think the story of her life, and the various perspectives she had on life in Georgian Britain, and the Colonies from being the daughter of a landowning MP to being first the runaway bride of a carptenter, and lastly the lifelong partner of a wealthy general would make for a most intriguing study, and clean up with some of the mysogyny with which she has previously been treated by (predominantly male, and often American) historians of the Revolutionary War.
Staying within the same conflict, I of course have to mention Samuel and Margaret Graves, though! The maligned Admiral and his formidable wife hold a special place in my heart, and are often passed over in overviews of the naval side of the war, since Samuel Graves' tenure of CIC of the North American Station was but fairly brief.
25. Who is the most overrated historical figure, in your opinion?
George Washington. I am a bit tired of seeing anything Hamilton-related, too, which has mainly to do with the fact that I think the musical did the serious study of the man and his times a great disservice.
27. What’s your favourite historical “What if…” scenario?
Ah, I am sure you know already! We have mapped out the whole scenario from 1702 to the early 1780s together, after all. ;)

TWQ 10th Anniversary
THE WHITE QUEEN 10-Year Anniversary Week
->Most Underrated Character
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The White Queen features a huge ensemble cast to fill out its storyline of romance and palace intrigue and betrayal. Most of these characters are drawn directly from actual history, and while some are either shown out of context or don't appear long enough to make any real impact, the one undeniable--and perhaps most underrated--character is surely Thomas Stanley, Earl of Derby. His first appearance is as Margaret Beaufort's third husband. She marries him to secure her son's safety, and he marries her because she's fabulously wealthy. This is about as convenient a marriage as any in the 15th century.
If anyone but Rupert Graves had played the part, Stanley would have been entirely forgettable. But the actor brought such charm and wit to the role that everything from his knowingly arched eyebrows at Margaret's vow of chastity to his sardonic grin at all her machinations became imprinted on my brain. It only seems appropriate then that Stanley should have been the one to topple the entire house of Yorkist cards and hand Henry Tudor the throne.
