Now when Kai and Cinder tell their daughter that she is a princess, little Peony thinks, "oh yeah, just like my friends." When she wears a ballgown and tiara, her friends wear tutus and plastic crowns. And all the TV shows say that, "anyone can be a princess."

So when she is sitting on her father's lap at a press conference, and a journalist asks her, "do you feel special because you are a princess?" she firmly responds that, "everyone is a princess!"

This wins over the hearts of all, and although they agree it's adorable, Cinder and Kai have to teach her that, "yes, everyone is special. But Peony—you are an actual princess."

explanation: i kinda struggled with finding one for cresswell. i’m not the biggest fan of their relationship. personally, i think the age gap combined with both of their maturities doesn’t make for a healthy relationship. i chose this song because 1) its a falling from the sky metaphor like hello and 2) it’s about relying on codependency to save you from yourself, and placing your trust on something that will lead to your downfall. this song could be coming from either perspective, but it makes the most sense coming from cress.

explanation: jacin has this deeply deeply repressed longing and adoration for winter. they also have soulmate energy. i think abstract represents that really well, because the journey of love and decline is way more subtle but also more inevitable. and i definitely think that the person showing compassion to a run-over animal can be compared with winter and her wolf.

When Cinder accidentally messes up her dance with Kai at the 130th Peace Ball, the first ball Kai and Cinder have attended as a married couple, she fears that the people of the Commonwealth would never accept her after the "stunt" she pulled...

As Thorne would've said, she'd "Cinder'ed" it up.

Casting her gaze upward to the sky, Cinder sighed as she counted the stars in the night sky.

Kicking her heels off, letting them tumble across the grass of New Beijing Palace's garden, Cinder shut her eyes and gave up counting.

A headache throbbed against her temples again.

Curse her two left feet for letting her mess up.

Her retina display repeated the moment in her little head-portscreen.

Her left foot slipping beneath her, Kai's shocked expression, his arms sweeping her up, inches above the floor.

"Stop," Cinder hissed to herself as her retina display showed her the moment where she bolted out of the ballroom. "Stop!"

"Cinder?"

Cinder recognized that voice. That beautiful, gorgeous voice.

She ignored it, burying her face in the crook of her elbow.

The rustle of the grass beside her and the warmth of an arm around her neck signaled her that he was here.

Kai.

"Kai, what are you doing here?" Cinder said. "Isn't your priority is to be in the ballroom, chatting with the guests?"

"The only priority I have right now is you," said Kai in her ear.

"Don't do that to yourself."

Kai gave a little snort. Cinder's heart thumped. "You know, sometimes your sarcasm hurts."

Cinder said nothing.

Kai sighed and scooted closer to her. He gently patted her arm, making her raise her head.

"Cinder, it's okay," said Kai quietly.

"No it's not." Cinder tugged at her hair, releasing it from its bun. "After that little stunt I pulled, everyone's going to think I'm a disgrace and I'm not fit for a queen."

"They'll understand, Cinder." Kai slowly turned her face toward his. "It's normal. You weren't raised by royalty like how your mother expected. You're just adjusting."

A ghost of a smile flitted across his lips.

"You're right," admitted Cinder. "I'm just adjusting."

"I thought it was my fault you slipped," whispered Kai.

"What?"

"Because you've spent 5 years as a mechanic and 8 years in a suspended animation tank, I knew you wouldn't be quite comfortable with this. Yet I married you anyway. I'm sorry." Kai looked away.

"Are you crazy?" said Cinder. "Marrying you was the best thing that happened to me. I would never regret that."

Kai smiled, taking Cinder's hand in his.

They stood up, both shining brightly in the moonlight.

Kai pressed his lips to Cinder's metal knuckle. "May I have this dance, My Empress?"

Cinder kissed him softly, then pressed her forehead against his. "Yes, you may."

I absolutely LOVE (emphasis on love) Cinder and Kai when they have their heart to heart conversations with just the two of them. Honestly, any conversation with just the two of them is already gold, but those kinds just make it better. We got a good amount of their sweet convos in books, but thinking about how many they’d have now that they’re engaged or married is even better. They’re honestly so perfect for each other, it’s so clear. You can tell they truly value and love each other’s company the most. definitely soulmates

I love them too. My favorite thing about kaider is how they're naturally just good friends. They don't have that childhood friendship like Jacin and Winter, but they have that ability to talk with and tease one another like they're old friends. I also love how well they understand one another and are able to support each other when things are hard. They balance each other out in cool ways while still being super fun and interesting.

Hmm, so I know I have taken literally forever to answer this request and my apologies for the same but I finally wrote it and shall be replying for the other pile of requests resting in my inbox for over a year now- and I feel like cheering on myself cuz yea (wohoo! 😍 finally out of my writing block) Thank you so much anon for this heart breaking request, it was fun to write and I didn't really write anything drastic for I have to write multiple other break up fics for our lovely pair of royals. Still, a fair warning to keep a box of tissues close by in case you feel the need to use them.

Better Fates, Worse Futures!

Cinder's Perspective:

"Are you happy, Kai?", she prompted.

She wanted to know if he was drowning in the same misery just like her or if had he moved on and found someone else and made love to her-- the very thought brought a pang of jealously but it was the bitter truth. Kai was no longer hers. His happiness was not the same as hers- not anymore.

"Do you have to ask, Cinder?" He sighed.

"I want to know."

"I'm not sure, sometimes I feel happy- other times I feel guilty and when I don't feel these two emotions I feel regret over the possibilities of the future." A future- our future together was left unsaid. A fantasy never becomes a future- a cyborg never married a prince and a love story never had a happily ever after.

"Well, I can understand-"

"You don't really, Cinder. I gave my word to you and later broke it. I betrayed your trust in the with form and I'm so sorry, you didn't even get a chance-"

"Kai, it's all things of the past now, we both have moved on and I guess it's better if none of us brings our past together up." Moved on- her foot, she had placed the order for the 'Cinder and Cinnamon' cologne that he uses just again yesterday for she missed his smell.

"I'm happy to know that you're happy."

"Who said I'm happy?"

"I just assumed."

"I'm doing better, yes. Better than last year but I'm not happy. I haven't been happy in a while now. Honestly, happiness is overrated." She retorted.

"Happiness is a shitty feeling."

They sat in silence waiting for the other world leaders to show up. Cinder tried to break the awkward silences with more awkward questions. Had Iko been present here she would have strangled her- not that it won't be justified.

"How is governing going?"

"Hectic per se, but it's okay. I'm used to it."

"Expected from the best diplomat in the world," She praised without thinking through.

"Well, he failed at one thing he wasn't  supposed to so what's the use?"

"I don't think he failed. He tried his best but fate had better plans for him."

"What's better than you, then?"

Now that caught her off guard: 'what was better than her?' Had she been asked this question 10 years ago, she would have sarcastically replied, "What's worse than her?" 

However, Kai made her feel like she was the best thing in the world for over 9 years now. She asked herself, what's better than her? That was a little bit narcissistic to say, that she was the best thing that happened to Kai.

But in the stars' reality, what was better than them being together?

Although, it had taken a lot of effort to convince herself that she was dating The Emperor Kaito of the Eastern Commonwealth in the beginning, once her mind had absorbed this piece of information- She had never really thought of an alternative future where they won't be together.

Being without her was better than being with her, in multiple ways as well. She had noticed the breakdowns, anxiety issues and skipping of meals, dark circles under his eyes in the last days of their relationship. She had tried to reach out, to help him and soothe him but there wasn't much to offer when she was the 'misery'. The guilt ate him up and in the end unsaid bitter words and broken promises resulted in a turmoil of holding on and letting go. There wasn't much to hold on to, to begin with- a love of two royals against the prejudices of million citizens. Alas, the majority wins and heartbreaks happen and the royal lovers pretend to be strangers.

She replies to his question at last, "In the eyes of the million, I assume it's Ms. Chen Daiyu."

"Cinder, I'm just seeing her as a public stunt- My Inner Circle thinks it's the right time to get married and I'm unable to oppose it. I'm not willing onto this."

Chen Daiyu was all that she had seen all over the news for the last week. Too bad her newsfeed was really in her own retina scanner otherwise should have broken every other screen showing the two lovebirds and the speculations of their engagement and all the times they were seen together. 

"Engagement doesn't seem like a publicity stunt to me, Kai."

"Cinder, it's not what-"

"Please, Kai. Don't pity me now, I'm happy you have found your one." She said rather too bitterly, he didn't deny the claim not like she expected him to.

"I did find my one. I found her and loved her and lost her to my shortcomings. You are my one, Cinder. You always will be."

What episodes of 'Heartbreak and Confessions" was she walking into? Iko loved that drama when exes met after some years and confessed about how they were still in love and just bullshit happens and they get back together.

They were Kai and Cinder, just ex-lovers still in love with each other. Even if their eyes shone with devotion for each other and their hands longed to hold each other, the burden of royalty broke a bond of 9 years, in months- in seconds at last. In the end, it was a simple 'I can't take it anymore' that forced her to leave and him to stop trying. Talking with him, she realized it was necessary to break ties and be actual strangers than just pretend to be one. It was going to hurt a lot and she would feel numb and heartbroken when she would see him with someone else, married and happy. Yet bitter pills need to be taken to cure the ailment.

Rising from a seat, she said, " I was the one, Kai. I'm not your future anymore. Ms. Chen Daiyu seems like a lovely lady. I wish you happiness with her. You can ask Torin to seek me when all the world leaders gather on time. It was nice talking to you. Take care-", she was thankful she couldn't cry, "- Congratulations."

She walked away. He didn't stop. Her words were the final closure for both of them- she was allowing him to move on just as much as she was allowing it to herself.

Her grief came back six months later- this time it was in the form of a wedding invitation.

Now at almost 20 I can't imagine dating a person my sisters age but I still have such a soft spot for Cresswell😭 I read the book at 13 and thought it was weird but in my mind it was fine bc he didn't do anything too bad. Tangled was my favorite movie and the connection made me love it. At 16 I knew I wouldn't date a 20 year old and knew him kissing her was a problem but his speech about being the man she believed he was softened me to it and so did the collective trauma they shared. Their age difference was also the same as when my grandparents got married. Now I know that she should've lived a life without romance with him to discover a life outside of trauma and then their found family. Actually experience things and then if 2-3 years later they wanna date then ok. However Thorne was actually really pushing that so I don't think he's really a problem. The biggest part is also the satellite and her lack of life experience

Kaider do it before or after getting married or maybe after they are engaged? Thoughts?

In my mind it definitely doesn't happen before they get engaged. They're both extremely busy world leaders and even on the rare opportunity they have time to be intimate together, they're too exhausted. There are, for sure, heated make outs and maybe the occasional dry humping session to relieve sexual tension. But there's not full-blown sex until they're both living on the same planet--at the very soonest. And even at that point, they're both ridiculously busy with running the Commonwealth and wedding planning that I don't think they'd actually have the opportunity to until their honeymoon when no one is allowed to bother them. They'd spend a week on some tropical island fucking, catching up on well-deserved rest, and simply enjoying their alone time together.

what antics of Kai’s do you think would make Cinder crack whenever she tries to maintain a cool façade?

Mostly the ones related to their work. You have to be solemn and responsible as a politician, and Cinder gets tired of people not take her seriously so she begins working on her 'politician face'.

When she's practising her speeches, she'll look at herself in a mirror to maintain a straight face. Kai sits behind her and makes silly faces to try and get her to crack. When she doesn't, he comes right up in her face poking out his tongue. It doesn't work either.

But then the first time after this that Cinder has a meeting, she's doing well, keeping it cool, when her eyes land on Kai. He merely winks, but the memory of the practising comes back and she cracks up. Everyone else at the meeting thinks she's having an asthma attack and calls for a doctor, so she gets away with it.

The other one is inside jokes. They of course have a lot of them and Kai likes to slip them into his speeches veiled in innocuous phrases. The public catch on that a lot of the time, Empress Selene is biting her lip and smiling during Kai's speeches. Thorne mentions on his podcast that Kai is trying to make her laugh and it immediately becomes a public game. People betting on how many times the emperor will succeed and trying to understand what the inside joke is from the vague references in the speech.
