Wait, wait, wait. If White Martians are important for the life cycle of Mars how does M'gann leaving affect the planet?

So white martians are like cosmic trees: just because one tree is missing doesn't mean the planet is in trouble. As long as there are some white martians sustaining life on Mars, the planet will be okay. My'ri'ah would have to make an excuse for why M'gann is missing. Mars doesn't produce a fixed amount of white martians.

in fact, it's common for white martians to be brought on red martians' pilgrimage trips to Saturn or other planets to keep the crew well fed with familiar plants and fruits. Sometimes white martian seeds are smuggled out of Mars.

Such is the case for the Master Gardener, a green martian who was exiled from Mars for his crimes. He smuggled a handful of white martian seeds with him to Earth, training them to grow unique plants and control the weather in a town he resides in.

Today I checked out the local Master Gardeners demonstration and community garden. I met a MG who was thrilled that I was interested, and wanted to call the extension office right then to get me on the waitlist for the basic class (I’m already on it, but they only have classes once a year at most). She also definitely thought I was fresh out of high school (thanks, EDS!).

When I was a kid, becoming a Master Gardener was one of my life goals. My grandparents’ neighbor, who doted on me and my siblings like we were her own grandkids, was a MG, and I was enamored by her garden (and also her official MG polo and sun visor). As a teen showing livestock at the county fair, which can be overstimulating even for average people, the MG area was my oasis. I loved hiding away in the relative quiet of the plants next to the soothing water fountain with adults (easy to pick out in their volunteer uniforms) who were happy to talk to me about plants for an extended period of time. I have so many happy memories of that space and the kind Master Gardeners.

I hope they offer the basic class soon (and at a day/time I can attend). I want to make the kid I was proud.

Master Gardner opens with the quintessential Paul Schrader image: a character in an otherwise empty room hunched over a writing desk, scribbling in a journal. That’s the entire film in a nutshell, really: the director’s stylistic trademarks and thematic obsessions distilled to their purest forms, leaving behind no trace of excess fat or bloat.

The movie’s efficient, economical, methodical visual language resembles the gardens described by the frequent voiceover narration. The eponymous horticulturalist strives to sculpt botanical spectacles that simulate the spontaneity of nature through meticulously controlled cultivation and selective pruning. The setting that he inhabits is likewise rigid and inflexible, defined by oppressively symmetrical framing and shot compositions that stand in stark contrast to the chaotic subtext lurking beneath the story’s surface—a compellingly contradictory marriage of technical precision and narrative ambiguity. Our protagonist is haunted by dark memories; the intricate tattoos scrawled across his flesh serve as a permanent reminder of his shameful history of bigotry and bloodshed. The inherent tension between the relatively peaceful existence that he now enjoys and his desire to atone for his past sins lends the central conflict a pervasive atmosphere of inevitability: just as a seed must take root and a flower needs to bloom, so too is this latest incarnation of the “God’s Lonely Man” archetype inexorably propelled towards violence—the ultimate act of redemption.

Master Gardener is, in short, the epitome of transcendental cinema: elegantly simple, deliciously subtle, and sublimely minimalistic.

About the Master Gardener, how does the Green and the Swampthing respond to what seems to be alien terraforming of Earth.

On Mars, white martians are able to cloak the planet so that life is undetectable outside of martian civilization (capable of even disrupting technology that attempts to study the planet). It's how people on Earth don't know there's life on Mars.

So when the Master Gardener takes over a small town on Earth, he's able to terraform the area in an undetectable way with his white martians. Even other green martians- like J'onn- don't perceive what's taking place. The town essentially disappears from the maps.
