How to use DXVK with The Sims 3
Have you seen this post about using DXVK by Criisolate? But felt intimidated by the sheer mass of facts and information?
@desiree-uk and I compiled a guide and the configuration file to make your life easier. It focuses on players not using the EA App, but it might work for those just the same. It’s definitely worth a try.
Adding this to your game installation will result in a better RAM usage. So your game is less likely to give you Error 12 or crash due to RAM issues. It does NOT give a huge performance boost, but more stability and allows for higher graphics settings in game.
The full guide behind the cut. Let me know if you also would like it as PDF.
Happy simming!
Disclaimer and Credits
Desiree and I are no tech experts and just wrote down how we did this. Our ability to help if you run into trouble is limited. So use at your own risk and back up your files!
We both are on Windows 10 and start the game via TS3W.exe, not the EA App. So your experience may differ.
This guide is based on our own experiments and of course criisolate’s post on tumblr:  https://www.tumblr.com/criisolate/749374223346286592/ill-explain-what-i-did-below-before-making-any
This guide is brought to you by Desiree-UK and Norn.
Compatibility
Note: This will conflict with other programs that “inject” functionality into your game so they may stop working. Notably
Reshade
GShade
Nvidia Experience/Nvidia Inspector/Nvidia Shaders
RivaTuner Statistics Server
It does work seamlessly with LazyDuchess’ Smooth Patch.
LazyDuchess’ Launcher: unknown
Alder Lake patch: does conflict. One user got it working by starting the game by launching TS3.exe (also with admin rights) instead of TS3W.exe. This seemed to create the cache file for DXVK. After that, the game could be started from TS3W.exe again. That might not work for everyone though.
A word on FPS and V-Sync
With such an old game it’s crucial to cap framerate (FPS). This is done in the DXVK.conf file. Same with V-Sync.
You need
a text editor (easiest to use is Windows Notepad)
to download DXVK, version 2.3.1 from here: https://github.com/doitsujin/DXVK/releases/tag/v2.3.1 Extract the archive, you are going to need the file d3d9.dll from the x32 folder
the configuration file DXVK.conf from here: https://github.com/doitsujin/DXVK/blob/master/DXVK.conf. Optional: download the edited version with the required changes here.
administrator rights on your PC
to know your game’s installation path (bin folder) and where to find the user folder
a tiny bit of patience :)
First Step: Backup
Backup your original Bin folder in your Sims 3 installation path! The DXVK file may overwrite some files! The path should be something like this (for retail): \Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Game\Bin (This is the folder where also GraphicsRule.sgr and the TS3W.exe and TS3.exe are located.)
Backup your options.ini in your game’s user folder! Making the game use the DXVK file will count as a change in GPU driver, so the options.ini will reset once you start your game after installation. The path should be something like this: \Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 (This is the folder where your Mods folder is located).
Preparations
Make sure you run the game as administrator. You can check that by right-clicking on the icon that starts your game. Go to Properties > Advanced and check the box “Run as administrator”. Note: This will result in a prompt each time you start your game, if you want to allow this application to make modifications to your system. Click “Yes” and the game will load.
Tumblr media
2. Make sure you have the DEP settings from Windows applied to your game.
Open the Windows Control Panel.
Click System and Security > System > Advanced System Settings.
On the Advanced tab, next to the Performance heading, click Settings.
Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.
Select 'Turn on DEP for all programs and services except these”:
Tumblr media
Click the Add button, a window to the file explorer opens. Navigate to your Sims 3 installation folder (the bin folder once again) and add TS3W.exe and TS3.exe.
Click OK. Then you can close all those dialog windows again.
Setting up the DXVK.conf file
Open the file with a text editor and delete everything in it. Then add these values:
d3d9.textureMemory = 1
d3d9.presentInterval = 1
d3d9.maxFrameRate = 60
d3d9.presentInterval enables V-Sync,d3d9.maxFrameRate sets the FrameRate. You can edit those values, but never change the first line (d3d9.textureMemory)!
The original DXVK.conf contains many more options in case you would like to add more settings.
Tumblr media
A. no Reshade/GShade
Setting up DXVK
Copy the two files d3d9.dll and DXVK.conf into the Bin folder in your Sims 3 installation path. This is the folder where also GraphicsRule.sgr and the TS3W.exe and TS3.exe are located. If you are prompted to overwrite files, please choose yes (you DID backup your folder, right?)
And that’s basically all that is required to install.
Start your game now and let it run for a short while. Click around, open Buy mode or CAS, move the camera.
Now quit without saving. Once the game is closed fully, open your bin folder again and double check if a file “TS3W.DXVK-cache” was generated. If so – congrats! All done!
Things to note
Heads up, the game options will reset! So it will give you a “vanilla” start screen and options.
Don’t worry if the game seems to be frozen during loading. It may take a few minutes longer to load but it will load eventually.
The TS3W.DXVK-cache file is the actual cache DXVK is using. So don’t delete this! Just ignore it and leave it alone. When someone tells to clear cache files – this is not one of them!
Update Options.ini
Go to your user folder and open the options.ini file with a text editor like Notepad.
Find the line “lastdevice = “. It will have several values, separated by semicolons. Copy the last one, after the last semicolon, the digits only. Close the file.
Now go to your backup version of the Options.ini file, open it and find that line “lastdevice” again. Replace the last value with the one you just copied. Make sure to only replace those digits!
Save and close the file.
Copy this version of the file into your user folder, replacing the one that is there.
Things to note:
If your GPU driver is updated, you might have to do these steps again as it might reset your device ID again. Though it seems that the DXVK ID overrides the GPU ID, so it might not happen.
How do I know it’s working?
Open the task manager and look at RAM usage. Remember the game can only use 4 GB of RAM at maximum and starts crashing when usage goes up to somewhere between 3.2 – 3.8 GB (it’s a bit different for everybody).
So if you see values like 2.1456 for RAM usage in a large world and an ongoing save, it’s working. Generally the lower the value, the better for stability.
Also, DXVK will have generated its cache file called TS3W.DXVK-cache in the bin folder. The file size will grow with time as DXVK is adding stuff to it, e.g. from different worlds or savegames. Initially it might be something like 46 KB or 58 KB, so it’s really small.
Optional: changing MemCacheBudgetValue
MemCacheBudgetValue determines the size of the game's VRAM Cache. You can edit those values but the difference might not be noticeable in game. It also depends on your computer’s hardware how much you can allow here.
The two lines of seti MemCacheBudgetValue correspond to the high RAM level and low RAM level situations. Therefore, theoretically, the first line MemCacheBudgetValue should be set to a larger value, while the second line should be set to a value less than or equal to the first line.
The original values represent 200MB (209715200) and 160MB (167772160) respectively. They are calculated as 200x1024x1024=209175200 and 160x1024x1024=167772160.
Back up your GraphicsRules.sgr file! If you make a mistake here, your game won’t work anymore.
Go to your bin folder and open your GraphicsRules.sgr with a text editor.
Search and find two lines that set the variables for MemCacheBudgetValue.
Modify these two values to larger numbers. Make sure the value in the first line is higher or equals the value in the second line. Examples for values: 1073741824, which means 1GB 2147483648 which means 2 GB. -1 (minus 1) means no limit (but is highly experimental, use at own risk)
Save and close the file. It might prompt you to save the file to a different place and not allow you to save in the Bin folder. Just save it someplace else in this case and copy/paste it to the Bin folder afterwards. If asked to overwrite the existing file, click yes.
Now start your game and see if it makes a difference in smoothness or texture loading. Make sure to check RAM and VRAM usage to see how it works.
You might need to change the values back and forth to find the “sweet spot” for your game. Mine seems to work best with setting the first value to 2147483648 and the second to 1073741824.
Uninstallation
Delete these files from your bin folder (installation path):
d3d9.dll
DXVK.conf
TS3W.DXVK-cache
And if you have it, also TS3W_d3d9.log
if you changed the values in your GraphicsRule.sgr file, too, don’t forget to change them back or to replace the file with your backed up version.
OR
delete the bin folder and add it from your backup again.

B. with Reshade/GShade
Follow the steps from part A. no Reshade/Gshade to set up DXVK.
If you are already using Reshade (RS) or GShade (GS), you will be prompted to overwrite files, so choose YES. RS and GS may stop working, so you will need to reinstall them.
Whatever version you are using, the interface shows similar options of which API you can choose from (these screenshots are from the latest versions of RS and GS).
Please note:
Each time you install and uninstall DXVK, switching the game between Vulkan and d3d9, is essentially changing the graphics card ID again, which results in the settings in your options.ini file being repeatedly reset.
ReShade interface
Choose – Vulcan
Tumblr media
Click next and choose your preferred shaders.
Hopefully this install method works and it won't install its own d3d9.dll file.
If it doesn't work, then choose DirectX9 in RS, but you must make sure to replace the d3d9.dll file with DXVK's d3d9.dll (the one from its 32bit folder, checking its size is 3.86mb.)
GShade interface
Choose –
Executable Architecture: 32bit
Graphics API: DXVK
Hooking: Normal Mode
Tumblr media
GShade is very problematic, it won't work straight out of the box and the overlay doesn't show up, which defeats the purpose of using it if you can't add or edit the shaders you want to use.
Check the game's bin folder, making sure the d3d9.dll is still there and its size is 3.86mb - that is DXVK's dll file.
If installing using the DXVK method doesn't work, you can choose the DirectX method, but there is no guarantee it works either.
The game will not run with these files in the folder:
d3d10core.dll
d3d11.dll
dxgi.dll
If you delete them, the game will start but you can't access GShade! It might be better to use ReShade.
Some Vulcan and DirectX information, if you’re interested:
Vulcan is for rather high end graphic cards but is backward compatible with some older cards. Try this method with ReShade or GShade first.
DirectX is more stable and works best with older cards and systems. Try this method if Vulcan doesn't work with ReShade/GShade in your game – remember to replace the d3d9.dll with DXVK's d3d9.dll.
For more information on the difference between Vulcan and DirectX, see this article:

Those of you who switched or are thinking of switching to Linux, here's a neat summary of all KDE programs in case you are looking for alternatives to Windows programs such as Adobe PDF reader, Notepad++ or Bulk Rename Utility.
All of them are free and open-source and you can use most of them on Windows as well.
Personally, I recommend Okular as a PDF editor (I used this to organize my literature for my master's thesis!) and Kate as a text editor (Fedora comes with KWrite, but I replaced it with Kate as it has more features). KDE Connect is also fantastic for quickly exchanging files between your PC and your phone.

Islam and Daoism
Daoism is not a religion in the strictest sense of the word, but it can be practiced as one. There is no dogma and for this reason, it can be difficult to describe what Daoism is or what Daoists believe. Some practice magic like fulu or Yi Jing and others do not. Some use ritual and others are more free form in their approach. Some practice meditation while others have barely tried it. The common theme is that most Daoists are familiar with the Dao De Jing in some way. The link provided is in PDF form and happens to be my personal favorite translation. The editor is quite brilliant to have used Laotse's premier scholar, Chuangtse, as direct commentary on the work. The differences arise in that there were many students, and students of students, and differences in practices arose and branched off, etc. Additionally, we don't know the real name of the person who wrote the Dao De Jing. Laotse is an honorific but some people think his given name might have been Li Er. Some people think it may have been authored by a committee. My favorite myth about it is that it was written upon request as the Old Master left the country. The lack of good history on the subject can be chalked up to the fact that it was fundamentally different from the Confucian societal values, even going as far as to critique Confucianism, and therefore, they did not do it the justice of keeping good records of Daoist historical development. The Daoists did a fairly good job of preserving their own manuscripts though, so there is a good body of literature out there, even today.
Now, the idea of a god in Chinese history was that of an idol. For Daoists to claim that the Dao was older than any god would in fact make it closer to the concept of God in His pure form, as described in Surat al-Ikhlas. But it does fall short, because the Dao De Jing also describes the Dao as impersonal in that it doesn't directly care about or pay attention to the creation that it gives rise to. The original Daoists were certainly observant, but they probably lacked the knowledge of the unseen that would've allowed them to understand God's deep love for us. Still, their perception of the natural world did give rise to a deep respect for it. Stewardship is a value in Islam that predates Ibrahim AS and is being revived today within the faith through some groups.
At this point, you might be saying, "Okay great. That's a lot of facts but you haven't really tied anything together yet." And to you I say, "Hold up, I haven't had any coffee yet and I'm tired." *** *** I have now had coffee and nothing has changed. You will perhaps enjoy doing some of your own rumination on this one.
While I do not claim to know the unseen, I am a fairly intuition dominant person and I have many suspicions about many things. I mentioned in a previous essay that Islam teaches that before Muhammad ﷺ was sent as the final messenger of God, a messenger was sent to every nation, as many as 124,000 in total, all around the world. My thinking is that Daoism represents a remnant of the work of a prophet or, perhaps, multiple prophets who were sent to the people of China. You may or may not know that China as we know it today contains AT LEAST 56 ethnic groups so if one prophet was sent for each linguistic group, well, that's a lot of prophets.
For all you mystic types out there, you may want to compare it to Sufism, but I have to caution you in that no Daoist was reflecting on the infinite love of the Dao. And if you think self cultivation and spiritual maturity is ONLY practiced within the Sufi sect, then think again. But this misconception arises due to differences among cultures and cultural interpretations of Islam, not the religion itself. If you live in a corner of the world where Islam has become flattened or is grossly misunderstood, then I get it. Is this the part where I complain about people who claim to be the most enlightened are often the most spoiled, entitled a******s who can't engage in healthy conflict resolution to save their own lives? You know, people who claim to be allies of marginalized people but still need to be SEEN at Coachella? Those kinds of people. <It was at this moment she realized that the practice of Haya was a form of love for others, and even a path toward environmentalism>
As for me, I am neither a warrior in a garden nor a gardener in a war. I am merely a bull in a china shop, breaking everything and apologizing profusely and I am forever in debt to the people around me. I give thanks to God who I pray will forgive me.

Build a Dynamic Dashboard Using VBA and Excel
In today’s fast-paced business world, data visualization and automation have become essential tools for professionals. One of the most powerful ways to combine both is by creating dynamic dashboards using VBA in Excel. With the right VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) skills, you can automate data processing and build interactive dashboards that update with just one click.
In this blog, we'll explore how you can build a dynamic Excel dashboard using VBA, step-by-step. We’ll also show you how you can upgrade your skills with expert training from Innozant Institute, a leading name in smart tech learning.
🧩 What is a Dynamic Dashboard?
A dynamic dashboard is an interactive visual representation of your data that updates in real-time or with minimal manual effort. It includes charts, pivot tables, buttons, drop-downs, and reports that respond to user inputs like date selection, product filter, or region.
Unlike static reports, dynamic dashboards can be reused, refreshed, and reused with just a few clicks. And when combined with Excel VBA automation, they become even more powerful.
🛠️ Why Use VBA in Dashboards?
While Excel’s native tools like PivotTables and slicers are helpful, VBA offers added flexibility. Here’s what VBA can do:
Automate data import and cleanup
Dynamically refresh charts and PivotTables
Hide/show sheets, rows, and columns based on selections
Trigger actions with buttons or UserForms
Save or send dashboard reports in PDF or email
In short, VBA gives life to your static Excel files and makes your dashboards dynamic and intelligent.
📊 Step-by-Step: Build a Dynamic Dashboard Using VBA
Let’s look at how to build a simple yet dynamic sales dashboard using Excel and VBA.
Step 1: Prepare the Data
First, get your data ready. It could be from an Excel sheet, a database, or even an imported CSV file. Make sure it’s well structured — rows for records and columns for fields like Date, Region, Product, Sales, etc.
Step 2: Insert PivotTables and Charts
Use Excel’s built-in PivotTable feature to summarize your data — total sales by region, top products, monthly sales trends. Then, insert PivotCharts based on these tables.
To make the dashboard dynamic, we’ll now connect it with VBA.
Step 3: Add Form Controls (Buttons, Drop-downs)
Go to the Developer Tab in Excel and insert buttons and drop-downs. For example:
Combo box to select Region
Button to refresh data
Button to export dashboard as PDF
Name these controls so you can reference them in your VBA code.
Step 4: Open VBA Editor and Write Code
Press ALT + F11 to open the VBA editor. Create a new module and add code like:
Sub RefreshDashboard()
    Sheets("Dashboard").PivotTables("SalesPivot").PivotCache.Refresh
    MsgBox "Dashboard Updated!"
End Sub
You can also automate chart updates, formatting, and data filters. Connect your buttons to the macros via "Assign Macro."
Step 5: Add Export or Email Option
Want to share your dashboard? Try this code:
Sub ExportDashboardToPDF()
    Sheets("Dashboard").ExportAsFixedFormat Type:=xlTypePDF, Filename:="Sales_Report.pdf"
    MsgBox "Dashboard Exported as PDF!"
End Sub
This allows users to download or email the dashboard as a professional PDF report — all from within Excel.
Step 6: Build a UserForm for Advanced Control
Using a VBA UserForm, you can let users select multiple filters (like date range, region, or category) and click a button to view updated results. This adds a sleek, app-like feel to your Excel file.
🎯 Real-World Uses of Dynamic Dashboards
Sales Teams: Track targets, product performance, and regional trends
HR Departments: Monitor hiring status, attrition, and employee engagement
Finance Teams: Compare monthly expenses, profits, and forecasts
Project Managers: View project timelines, milestones, and risks
With just a bit of VBA, your Excel file becomes a powerful business intelligence tool.

Vector Graphics: Mastering Adobe Illustrator
Vector graphics, unlike raster graphics, are composed of mathematical equations defining lines and curves. This makes them infinitely scalable without losing quality, a crucial advantage for various design applications. This inherent scalability is a key reason why institutes like MAAC Institute, which offer comprehensive training in graphic design and multimedia, emphasize the importance of vector graphics in visual communication. Adobe Illustrator, a powerful vector graphics editor, is the industry-standard tool for creating and manipulating vector artwork.
Understanding Vector Graphics
Points and Paths: Vector graphics are built from points connected by paths. These paths can be straight lines or curves, and they define the shape of the object.
Scalability: Vector graphics can be scaled up or down without losing quality. This is because the mathematical equations that define the shape remain unchanged.
Layers and Groups: Vector graphics can be organized into layers and groups, making it easier to manage complex designs.
Color and Fill: Colors can be applied to shapes using solid colors, gradients, or patterns.
Key Features of Adobe Illustrator
Pen Tool: The Pen Tool is the cornerstone of Illustrator, allowing you to create precise paths and curves.
Shape Tools: Illustrator offers a variety of shape tools, including rectangles, ellipses, polygons, and stars.
Type Tool: You can create and manipulate text in various fonts, sizes, and styles.
Color Panel: The Color Panel allows you to choose colors, create gradients, and apply color effects.
Effects Panel: You can apply various effects to your artwork, such as drop shadows, blurs, and 3D effects.
Blend Tool: The Blend Tool allows you to create smooth transitions between shapes.
Pathfinder: The Pathfinder panel lets you combine, subtract, and intersect shapes.
Creating Vector Graphics with Adobe Illustrator
Setting Up Your Document:
Choose a suitable artboard size and color mode (RGB or CMYK) based on your project's requirements.
Drawing Basic Shapes:
Use the Rectangle Tool, Ellipse Tool, and Polygon Tool to create basic shapes.
Use the Pen Tool to create more complex shapes and curves.
Working with Paths:
Use the Direct Selection Tool to edit individual anchor points and paths.
Use the Pathfinder panel to combine, subtract, and intersect shapes.
Applying Color and Effects:
Use the Color Panel to apply colors, gradients, and patterns.
Use the Effects Panel to add shadows, blurs, and other effects.
Creating Text:
Use the Type Tool to create text and apply fonts, sizes, and styles.
Convert text to outlines to edit it as a vector shape.
Exporting Your Artwork:
Export your artwork in various formats, including AI, EPS, PDF, SVG, and PNG.
Real-World Applications of Vector Graphics
Logo Design: Vector graphics are ideal for creating scalable logos that can be used on various media, from business cards to billboards.
Illustration: Vector graphics are used to create illustrations for books, magazines, and websites.
Web Design: Vector graphics can be used to create icons, buttons, and other web elements.
Print Design: Vector graphics are used for print design, such as brochures, flyers, and posters.

(C) EU This interview is facilitated by EUPL and funded by the European Union.
I am posting snippets of my correspondence with Anja Mugerli as it would give readers an insight into how she intermingles folkloric elements in to contemporary fiction.
Dear Anja,
Thank you for sharing the two PDFs of your stories in English translation. I have been pondering over the stories for a while now. Your stories operate at so many levels. They require the stories to be read over and over again and there is always something new to discover. I am not sure if you intended it, but at one level it is a straightforward short story. At another level, particularly if read again, it has a “folklory” air to it. I am not sure how to spell it out any clearer. Then, your fascination with the body without being voyeuristic or sleazy but in a calm, matter-of-fact tone, is lovely. It is almost as if a confident female gaze is over the body. and owns it. It is a very empowering feeling while reading your fiction. Thank you.
Dear Jaya,
Thank you for your very interesting questions. I’ll be happy to answer.
Anja
****
Anja Mugerli, born in 1984, is a Slovene writer. Her debut, the short prose collection Zeleni fotelj (Green Armchair), was published in 2015 and in 2017, her first novel, entitled Spovin, was nominated for the Novel of the Year Award in Slovenia. In 2021, her short prose collection Čebelja družina (Bee Family) won European Union prize for literature. She graduated with a degree in slovenian studies and has a master’s in performance studies and creative writing. She lives and works in Nova Gorica, on the border of Slovenia and Italy. In 2023, was published her second novel, entitled Pričakovanja (Expectations), by Cankarjeva založba.
Q1 How and why did you start writing fiction?
I grew up surrounded by books. I was a very shy and quiet child and sometimes it was hard for me to make friends. I guess what was missing in my real life I found it in books and when I grew up, I realized that I can express myself in writing. After I finished my studies, I decided I want to start writing seriously and I started sending my short stories to Slovenian literary magazines. More I wrote better my writing became and in 2014 I send my best stories to some editors because I wanted to publish a book. A year later my first book, a collection of short stories Zeleni fotelj (Green Armchair), was published. The book was very well received in Slovenia and since then I wrote three more books, two novels and another collection of short stories Bee Family, that received the European Union Prize for Literature. It was translated in Croatian, Macedonian, Hungarian, Italian and Bulgarian. Other translations will follow.
Q2. You are a polyglot. English, Spanish, Italian, and Slovene are the languages spoken by you. How does this familiarity with languages and thus, with different cultures impact your writing?
Slovene is of course my mother tongue. From other languages the closest to me is Italian because I live in a city on the border with Italy and I was in contact with this language form early childhood. English and Spanish I learned in school. Understanding different languages means that I can also read books in English, Italian and Spanish. Reading a book in original language is a different experience than reading it in translation. I often read the same book first in original language and then in Slovenian translation. An advantage of understanding different languages is also that I can read a book before it’s even translated in Slovenian. All this affects my writing. When I write a book about specific theme, I read other books that deal with this topic. In this way I compare different views and I try to look at the theme from other angles. This definitely broadens my horizon. Sometimes I use different books as references. In my novel Pričakovanja (Expectations) for example, I related to the female authors like Rachel Cusk and Sheila Heti who in their novels write about motherhood and womanhood.
Q3. What is it about cultural mappings that interests you?
In my book Bee Family, I explored different old customs and rituals specific from old Slovenian culture. Because I wanted a specific, darker atmosphere in the book, I chose the customs and rituals that deal with a little more obscure topics, for example burials. I knew about some customs, about others I found out during my research. There are a lot of old customs that are not used any more but they are still part of our culture’s heritage. I think it’s important to remember them and their role in past culture, and since many people don’t read ethnological articles, I think it’s a good thing to write about it in fiction. I like literature from which I learn something new, in which it’s not only about the story.
Q4. Would you self-translate your books, say from Slovene into English or even Italian? If yes, then what are the safeguards you would put in place, so as not to tinker with the text too much? Or would you merely translate the Slovene text as it has been written into another language?
In the past I actually translated a few of my texts from Slovenian to Italian. They were dramatic texts for a competition held in Duino in Italy. Two times I received the second prize, so I guess the translations were not bad. Today I wouldn’t do it anymore. I love writing in Slovenian. I can think, explain, interpret best in my own language.
Q5. You seem to be fascinated by the body. Why?
I think in western culture everyone is fascinated by the body – with this I mean of course female body. Since we are little girls, we hear and see everywhere how should a female body look like and also how it shouldn’t. This applies to films, tv-series, commercials and nowadays social networks, but it doesn’t stop there. Girls and women are confronted with comments on their bodies also in their social circles, from their classmates, coworkers and family members. The people who think they are allowed to comment on your body are often men (but not always!) and therefore also this myth of “perfect” body was made by men. I’m interested in women’s experience of their own bodies. How does it feel to be constantly aware of your own body? Because I think that women are constantly aware of their own body: how does it look, does it fit the society “standards”, what you think is wrong with it? Can your body get pregnant and can you have children? This is another thing that is very important in our society. Are you still a woman if you can’t have children? Or if you don’t want to have children? In my writing I try to turn the focus from “how should” to “how does it feel”.
In my novel Pričakovanja (Expectations) I write about a couple who can’t have children. The protagonist Jana is confronted with her own expectations and longings and with expectations of society. She is married, she finally has a steady job, she and her husband just bought a new apartment, the next step is a child. It seems that everyone around Jana expects that she will get pregnant. If she can’t get pregnant naturally, the medicine will help, it’s as easy as that. But during procedures of artificial insemination Jana feels more and more alienated from her body. She is reduced to her uterus, ovaries and cells and she gradually starts to lose contact with herself. The fact that the procedures of artificial insemination don’t succeed doesn’t help. Jana begins to think about motherhood. What does it mean to be a mother, is this really the only way she can live a full life, is it such a tragedy if she will never have children, what are the advantages of not having a child? She also realizes that it’s sometimes very difficult to separate your own expectations from expectations of others.
Q6. What is it about folk tales that intrigues and you wish to experiment with in your literary fiction? What are the technicalities that charm you, apart from folklore being a fine example of storytelling that has withstood the test of time. Can these be used and adapted with sophistication in modern stories?
In my book Bee Family, I explored old customs and rituals that are specific to Slovenian culture but can also be related to Slavic folklore. I never wanted to write about the past, instead I wanted to place these customs and rituals in today’s time (only one story happens in the past, during Second World War). I personally see old customs as a link to our ancestors and their way of life. I like the magic and secrecy of it, but I’m aware that nowadays society is very different, the values changed. Because of this, in my stories I tried to rethink old customs and rituals in a way that their main role changed. For example, in the first story of the book, the dance with the chair takes another role in the protagonist’s life in comparison to the old woman’s. If the dance with the chair in old woman’s life was important because during it, she found her future husband, the protagonist uses this old custom differently. In this way she breaks the tradition but on the other hand it’s because of this custom that she takes her life in her own hands. These customs and rituals often help my protagonists but not always in the way the reader may expect. My translator into Croatian said to me that these unexpected turns were exactly what fascinated her about the book. I see tradition as an important part of our culture, but I also think that we should rethink some old customs, see if they still make sense in the life we live today. Some cultures for example still blindly follow some customs that are hurting people and animals and nature.
Q7. How would you define femininity? Why is it that I get a sense from the few stories of yours that I have read, it is a concept that you wish to tussle with?
I think about this question a lot and I also try to integrate it into my writing, so I guess your sense is correct. What does it mean to be a woman? I often think about my mother who passed away four years ago. She was the first female role model to me. She was a very kind woman who always put her family first. She would do anything for us, her children. Some would say that this is a very natural thing, maternal instinct, but I personally know many women who don’t feel this way about their children or who even won’t have a child because of it. Are they less women because of it? I don’t think so. In her caring for others my mother completely forgot about herself. I see femininity as an ambiguity, always keeping balance between your own needs and wishes and expectations of family, friends, society. Some women, especially older generations, couldn’t handle this balance and they lived like my mother, they never put themselves first. It still happens today. I know many young mothers who deal with sense of guilt whenever they choose to put themselves before their child. I don’t have children, but I think you can’t expect to raise a child, who is sure of himself and who loves himself, if you as a mother don’t feel this way about yourself. It’s always about projection.
Q8. Your authorial comments in the stories are astute and you etch characters brilliantly. They are memorable.  How do you observe people in real life?
As I mentioned before, I was that child that didn’t join the play or quarrels with other children. Instead, I’ve rather observed the behaviour of others, not only my peer but also adults. I’m an introvert and as you may know introverted people prefer solitude and conversations one-on-one than big gatherings. But because our society (with “our” I mean Western) is more extrovert oriented, introverts are sometimes forced to act in extroverted way, for example if they want to get a job. Some years ago, I read a beautiful book about introverts, Quiet by Susan Cain, and the author during her research found out that introverts often imitate the behaviours of extroverted people. They do this so they can survive in hyperactive western society. I found myself in this description and more I think about it more I’m sure I did/do the same think. I observe people, but I don’t stop with their behaviour, I also focus on their moods, fillings, reactions etc. I use all of this in my writing and in creating of my protagonists.
Q9. Women writing about families tend to get mired in a lot of domestic detailing, which in its own way needs to be articulated and made visible. Yet, in your fiction, you take it one step further and probe the grey spaces between relationships and explore the “what if”, without underlining it. Are these conscious acts in your craftsmanship?
In connection to my previous answer, I would say that in my writing there isn’t a lot of action. Although I observe different people and use the material in my writing, I simply can’t write from the focalization of an extroverted protagonist, because I don’t know how it feels to be extroverted. Instead, I focus on the things that interest me the most: the inner life of my protagonist, their psychology, their relationships and how they are being shaped in these relationships.
Q10. Do you have any Slovenian author/book/literary website recommendations for readers?
I would recommend writers Lojze Kovačič and Ana Schnabl (their books are also in English), and Slovenian poetry which in my opinion is very good. My favourite Slovenian poets are Miljana Cunta, Veronika Dintinjana, Maja Vidmar, Barbara Korun. I would also recommend they visit websites Airbeletrina and Vrabec Anarhist. Together with my two colleagues I edit literary newspaper November and your readers are very warmly invited to check our Facebook page and Instagram.
