Elisa sees the gargoyels take off and rushes after them. It's sort of funny to me because there's really nothing for her to do here except be in the know, and she could get that from just... talking to the gargoyles later. But she cannot bear to be left out. I certainly believe she thinks she could be important in whatever takes place moving forward, but also how? If she would stop to think and also consider what it means to have a tag-along she's not sure they can trust yet... maybe she'd just... wait XD
And in the meantime, Goliath is holding everything close to his chest. Two people a little too caught up in their emotions just now. Goliath would talk about it with his clan, and I think before too long, about what Xanatos said. He's trying to collect his thoughts.
Only, woops nope. Xanatos doesn't want to see him doing that!

Propaganda under readmore:
Sure he's obsessed with the Illuminati and all, but he becomes a great friend to the gargoyles after figuring out Elisa was keeping them a secret, and later he helps Elisa run interference for them (especially in the comics)! Also i just think he's neat. Look at this silly little detective, out here trying his best. He was kicked out of the FBI but that doesn't mean he needs to be kicked out of the found family - please let him in!

Do you have any top favourite scenes from the show/comics?
First, anon, thank you for your patience while I thought long and in-depth about this. I love the show so much, it's easy for me to come up with 30 different examples of moments I love but that's not very exclusive ^^;
Some of my top scenes, in my rewatch of season 1 I'm undergoing at the moment, have been the little character-building moments between the Manhattan clan. For all of it's behind-the-scenes production struggles, "Enter Macbeth" has some very nice character interplay between Lexington, Brooklyn, and Goliath. "Sorry I was too busy WRITHING in AGONY to notice," and *DISTANT ROARING* "Looks like Bronx found Goliath," come to mind as moments that make me smile.
Another of my top favorite moments, (putting aside all OwenPuck scenes because otherwise this answer would be all about him, lmao) is the scene where Coyote and Dingo break The Pack out of jail. Fox reading Jean-Paul Sartre. "Nietzsche's too butch and Kafka reminds me of your little friends over there." The excellent sequence where Dingo breaks into the building with his powersuit and unleashes high-key horror imagery on the prison guard. It all fits so neatly together, and is such a well-paced scene it feels so luxurious in what it gives you. It's a top-tier scene for a season opener.
I've talked previously about "Kingdom," and what a great episode it is - I think what it really comes down to for me for "favorites" is how lived-in an episode feels. There's a lot of great character work in Gargoyles, which is one of the reasons people keep going back, in that it feels like a tangible world. When Matt comes back home to his tiny little apartment and loosens his tie and then gets startled by Broadway waiting for him. They way the clan collects Cagney to take care of back at the clock tower once it's apparent Elisa isn't coming back (an small but important detail not to forget, from a writing perspective - she's got a cat!) The dramatic but relatively domestic drama of the mutates in the Labryinth (oh no, someone in your underground collective is a major asshole!) Owen also sitting at David's desk with his jacket off and his tie loose. The little details like this make the show feel less like a cartoon where someone opens their closet and has ten of the same outfit as a gag, but like a world that belongs to the characters who live in it. If that makes sense?
Truly, the list does go on, but I'm going to transition to the comics now :)
I need to read the SLG run again; I've read it multiple times, but sometimes the more disparate quality of it's narrative and artistic elements distract me from forming a coherent opinion. But I adore the following moments:
Owen and Delilah bring Free Will to the Table
This is an interesting little interplay that frustrates me on the whole because I'm not entirely sure the Goliath / Thailog part of it is earned, but it does develop Delilah's sense of personhood in the narrative and also gives us a window into Puck's code-of-ethics-as-Owen. Goliath makes a mistake (girlfriends can be won like a prize) but Owen says essentially "Aren't you going to ask her what she wants? Doesn't she have free will?" which is a fascinating conk-on-the-noggin for the faerie-stuck-as-a-mortal-and-is-your-part-time-nemesis to deliver to the protagonist of your story.
And it does deliver in that Delilah says, "Fuck all this" (i wish she literally said that) and ends the party without being hitched to either Goliath or Thailog. She itches something in me because she's claiming some agency. She didn't ask to be here (who does, tbr) and was created from the DNA of two very complicated, very different women (who were unwilling donors to top it off) for the purposes of satisfying Thailog's desire for a romatic partner. NOT OKAY! What does Delilah want? For so much of her existence, what she's wanted has been a foregone conclusion (in that, it doesn't matter) and any move she makes in the narrative on her own agenda is one more step towards actualizating her sense of self. That being said - I would like more Delilah.
Shari = Shaharazade
Shari is such an interesting, stand-out character to me, and I wish she'd been around in the show because I'd love to see her animated. She's mystery wrapped in mystery - her motives are so opaque! She's a high-ranking Illuminati member who has presumably been alive for thousands of years - and she's helping Thailog for some inscrutible reason. I get really excited when she shows up. I'm also interested to see how Thailog and Shari pose as narrative foils to Xanatos and Co in the future, given their parallel but opposing structure.
Mary, Finella, and Brooklyn's timedance adventure begins
I think the last two issues of the SLG run were the strongest, and the content in them literally made me shriek when I read it. For one, you've got delicious interplay between Brooklyn's existence in the narrative. He's from the past in the future in the past in the present. Mary and Finella's relationship is great (and for the part of me that reads with shipping goggles - gay, please? they can bond over missing their kids and then kiss about it....a fine lady and her handmaiden, nothing to look at here boss, no sir!) Truly I want more Mary, Finella, and Brooklyn adventures. I think the beginning of their story was the best thing to come out of the 2006 comics run. Also, "You named the horse Magus?" "Something about his face...." (Magus confirmed horsey face🐴✨ ✊😔)
As for the new runs, I'm soaking it all in. I'm very excited for Quest - I don't have a "Top Favorite" scene from it yet, though I very much enjoy the fact we're getting a fleshed out picture of the NYC world of organized crime as it exists in Gargoyles. I like that they're all scared shitless of Uncle Dracon and I want him to show up more, he's been a very interesting player in the plot. I also really like the sequence where Renard says his goodbyes to his friends and family, even if it does implode ~10k words of unpublished fic I have on my Google Drive. But that's what the canon non-compliant tag on AO3 is for 👍! This is the short way to say I think Titania should be scarier. Like, shit-your-pants scary. I love women.
I love them so much, I married one! *ba-dum**tiss* 🥁🎶

@sugar-soda You're gonna love this: I'm about to explain the Dark Gargoyles AU!
Okay, let's set the background first: After the Wyvern Clan Massacre and sacking of the castle, and after the gargoyles were turned to stone except Goliath, after Goliath saves the princess, the Magus, as an apology and per Goliath's request, turns him to stone as well, but not before casting a spell so that when Goliath and his remaining clan awake above the clouds, the rest of their clan, who died, will be back as well... The Magus afterwards also makes sure there's a spell set in place to help the clan and any if their allies find their reincarnated clan members...
Cue a thousand years later...
Xanatos has the castle moved to his building, the gargoyles awaken, and surprise, they're all a bit vengeful/distrusting of humanity. But then the fight happens, and surprise surprise, Elisa rescues them, and oh, she's one of their reincarnated clan members. So is Xanatos. And a deal is kinda struck/made: to find their missing members, rebuild their clan, and maybe have Manhattan as their new territory to control...
Well, it goes about as well as one can expect. Most of the human population flees the first day, but those left behind or unable to leave flee underground. The likes of Tony Drakon and people like Fang aren't as evil as they were, having to step up and help others and growing as people, and other characters are bit more villainous or morally gray, such as Matt Bluestone (also a reincarnated clan member).
Reader is a younger teen who's been helping the hidden group under the city, scavenging for medicine and non-perishable food, and bringing news of the weather, what Xanatos is up to, and if anyone is too close to their hideout. Reader's usually on their own, not wanting to live underground most of the time, but also wary enough to sleep during the day, and stay awake at night. They do what they can to stave off boredom, climbing brick walls, finding new hidey holes all over the city and parks, sometimes swimming or staying by the water...
Then one night, as they're by the water, one of the smaller gargoyles falls in, and Reader jumps in, barely getting them both onto the bank. Reader is hacking up lungfuls of water, and the gargoyles they rescued is trying to get over the shock that someone, a human who isn't one of their's, just rescued him. And he decides this person he now owes a debt, but... Reader won't give their name. They can't say why they saved him, or where they go, but they say he can call them a nickname, or make up a name for them...
Then Reader leaves, disappearing into the fog...
This gargoyles now decides to keep finding Reader and tries to be friends with them. And so far, he notices they squirrel things away, they collect blankets and jars and bottles, they like to hide in dark places and sleep curled up amongst their blankets and books, and acts kinda like the dragons his clan was supposed to be related to. So, he decides the perfect name for them is Dragon, because they act like a little dragon.
Reader slowly becomes friends with him, but is secretive on where they go, and warns the others that they did rescue a gargoyle, but comes up with the excuse that if they'd let him die, the adults would have surely killed them in retaliation, or worked harder to find their hidden group...
The young gargoyle, in the meantime, really doesn't like his friend Dragon being so lonely. They have no clan it seems, they constantly talk about doing questionable things with no one there to catch them if they fall or get hurt, they sometimes have a cough or bruises or cuts, and they dodge the question of if they have somewhere to go once Winter fully sets in. He doesn't like it. They're too small, they're sickly at times, and they have no one in their corner if things go wrong. So, reluctantly, he decides to tell Goliath and Demona and Elisa and Xanatos...
Now the adults are worried, and suspicious. Is Dragon really to be trusted? They saved one of their own, without thought of payment, so they aren't cruel. But they also aren't entirely honest. It's best if they try to spy their son/young one's odd friend...
And they're quite... young. They don't seem to be healthy. They jump at the sound of a clattering rock, and avoid lights and the people of the city. Even when Elisa tries to approach them, they grow scared, anxious. It's like approaching a hatchling, one who's been on their own for too long...
And their scent... they can smell the same scent on them that clings to Elisa and Xanatos and Matt... the scent of clan...
It seems they'll need to step in soon...

We get to meet Matt Bluestone! I did remember that this was coming up. I do think it's fun that they introduce him here in a context he doesn't know about that includes the gargoyles. That TV is meant for the gargoyle at the top in the clock tower. It makes sense that he won't learn of them any time too soon—Elisa does not really have a reason to trust him yet—but she never does tell him, and it's an interesting thing that is always between them, even before and after he finds out about them. I do think he forgives her and it's fine? But also like, that is kind of a big deal once they do establish trust. So this little nod in their introduction is just... really great imo XD

Alright, I must afflict you all with this silly fan fic idea. It stemmed from the fun fact that the sound designer for "Bob's Burgers" is the same one for "Gargoyles". The streams are crossing! Basically, Tina has to do a paper for her English class on Shakespeare and nothing seems to be popping out to her. The romantic ones are either tragic or taken already by other kids in the class. And the dramas just don't appeal to her. So what does she do? Makes a whole new story inspired by elements of Shakespeare. Enter in the Gargoyles parody, in true Bob's Burgers fashion. All the characters are replaced with the Bob's Burgers cast, the humor is on point, and there are moments of commentary by the family while Tina reads her paper to them. Casting: Elisa Maza: Linda Belcher Goliath: Bob Belcher Hudson: Mr. Huggins Bronx: Little King Trashmouth (yes, this part will be played by a raccoon, I don't make the rules) Brooklyn: Tina (especially hilarious when she runs after a newly mutated Jimmy Jr and Gene has to tell her to stop) Broadway: Gene Lexington: Louise (small and full of vengence) Xanatos: Mr. Fischoeder Owen: Felix Fischoeder Demona: Cynthia Bush Matt Bluestone: Teddy (admit it, you wanna hear this guy yelling about the illuminati) Derek Maza: Gale (she'd probably get genetically spliced with her cat Mr. Business)
In the end, Tina appreciates elements of Shakespeare, but wanted more from it, like romance and strong female characters. Hope this silly thing brings you some laughs 😆

fox: she only got it after having alex, and the majority of the videos are “how to care for baby 101: teach your baby self defense (under adult supervision, of course)” (the ‘adult supervision’ is just puck who doesnt… even really count as a adult)
lex: just him talking about the hot guy he saw in the coffee shop, or at the park, or anywhere. “guys! this one LOOKED AT MEEEE he must be in love with me help im lonely”
goliath: so he wouldn’t have gotten one if angela hadnt convinced him to, and all it is is people requesting words for him to say with his DEEP SEXY VOICE™ such as “in a world” and “cucumber”
brooklyn: pretending to be like, a punk guy but everyone can tell hes not
hudson: the trio… convinces him to do tiktok dances… the account name is “cool tiktok grandpa”

Carry On Countdown Day 3 - AU/ Alternate Universe
"Angel of the Night"
Disney's Gargoyles was my very first fandom and the first time I encountered fanfiction! This show still has a special place in my heart.
The easy matching up of characters would be Goliath!Baz and Brooklyn!Simon, but I like the idea of Goliath!Simon and Demona!Baz. While Simon and the rest of the clan are cursed in stone for a thousand years, Baz spends that time trying to survive on his own and it changes him. When the curse is lifted, Simon and Baz are reunited but Baz isn't the same person anymore. There's so much more opportunity for angst and accusations of plotting this way. Penny would be Elisa Maza and Shep would be her conspiracy theory loving partner, Matt Bluestone.
#so obviously elder millennial self indulgence#and i just found out there are graphic novels!#i was such a Goliath/Elisa shipper as a kid#carry on countdown 2023#coc 2023#snowbaz gargoyles#snowbaz
