Okay so. You're bringing up one of my main obsessions rn. I also have some ocs that I'm developing, but of the ones introduced:

Finished Dawntrail MSQ tonight. Assorted scattershot (and spoiler-heavy) thoughts under the RM.

-I came to DT without much preexisting hype or emotional investment. All I wanted out of this expansion was to have a break from being the main character who has to save the multiverse from extinction, again, and to have some cool scenery to look at and some banger music, and we sure got that!

-There are a lot of things about how this expansion was written that didn't effortlessly or instinctively emotionally appeal to me in specific, but that are, when I think about them, really good, solid workmanlike choices re: how to construct a video game narrative.

-I know J-media tournament arcs are “well worn” in the same sense that the Grand Canyon or the Marianas Trench are, but they provide a plausible pretext for the things that MMOs are set up to do. Better than a host of supposedly highly-realized and virtuous precursor beings insisting that we repeatedly justify our existence by fighting, for sure.

-Being Wuk Lamat's mentor/emotional support Eorzean/800 pound gorilla was an interesting conceit. I think the writers carried off "non-protagonist PC" fairly well, and I've played other games where that was tried and didn't work (lookin at you SWtOR, re: KotFE). Lamat'yi feels like a more competently-written version of Stormblood-era Lyse. She's got both a core personality that remains consistent and a trajectory of increasing competence and maturity. I think she's well constructed as a protag/viewpoint character: she's primed to like things and people, her ethos of addressing conflict by seeking understanding and consensus is a good pretext to deliver exposition, and she feels/empathizes intensely but doesn't get stuck on her own emotional reactions. I wouldn’t say I effortlessly enjoy her as a character, especially early on when the writing leans hard into her immaturity and desperation to be liked and to prove herself, but I understand and respect what that’s for. It’s no different than Naruto or early-OT Luke Skywalker.

-I like the variety of Central/South American cultural inspo (Aztec, Quechua, Yucatec Maya, Pueblo, etc), we got in the setting and culture for this xpac, and the conception of Tural as a very racially/culturally heterogeneous place where power comes from the aggregate of a complicated network of relationships that have to be negotiated on an ongoing basis. It's not zero-sum, and finding solutions that benefit everyone is hard but worthwhile.

-I was excited to be able to bring Krile, my favorite Scion, along this time. I feel like the ShB/EW A-team had enough presence to appeal to people who like them and not so much that they upstaged the new characters or the change of scenery.

-I think there was effort to add cinematographic interest to the many, dense cutscenes other than wide-angle shot/reverse-shot over paragraphs of text. Some of the camera angles (switching between the faces of my minimum-height lalafell and 2m+ Wuk Lamat) and long shots of characters' expressions resulted in...sometimes-intentional uncanniness and unintentional comedy. This probably was not the devs' intention (their intention was probably a performance with emotional subtlety that the graphics overhaul alas still doesn't permit), but my instinctive read was that it felt like unnecessary padding/stalling for time.

-Re: other stuff that felt like it unnecessarily lengthened the playtime and the amount of text to read, sometimes I resent that it feels like I'm being not just spoon-fed, but bottle-fed plot and character beats that are not complicated or hard to understand. Then I see people evincing failure to comprehend what they're reading elsewhere on the internet and understand why it's done that way. :\

-There's basically one trademark Ishikawa conflict: Local man driven to extremes by inability/unwillingness to come to terms with loss, aging, and death. There's also one trademark Ishikawa sin that characterizes all of the ShB-and-after antagonists: a delusional insistence on harming the living to feed the dead. Those come up so consistently that her style is instantly recognizable...and I wonder some about what she's experienced or how she's doing.

-The hairpin turn in the plot about 2/3 of the way in and the by-now very familiar tropes aren't my narrative jam at all, but it was engaging enough to mostly keep my attention until the end. I'm beyond weary of Ascians/Ancients and shard math, so I'm glad those things were referenced (and there's some interesting stuff to chew on re: Lalafell history in particular) but not focal.

-I'm a little mad, because my pre-Heritage-Found speculation that El Dorado was going to turn out to actually be an aetherologic Superfund site (which would explain the security, the giants charging in and coming back dead, sick, or unable to reproduce, the teratogenic effects on eg Blessed Siblings etc and the fight for control of it as a putative military asset) seemed to have a lot of fun possibilities. I guess you could argue that Living Memory might be a very abstracted nod in that direction.

-*Queen Sphene*? Really, you couldn’t have named her anything at all else???

-I'm not at all satisfied that "he felt overshadowed by his father's accomplishments and wanted to prove his worth independent of his unusual heritage" is sufficient justification for how Zoraal Ja was, especially prior to his first contact with Alexandria. I figured based on his behavior and Krile's remarks, that he had to be Tempered, or affected by an equivalent kind of magical compulsion.

-The final trial, and to a lesser extent the last dungeon are an unmitigated (and unmitigatable until mods become available again) accessibility nightmare if you're photosensitive or prone to motion sickness. I hoped the devs would take the feedback they got from the ShB alliance raid series under consideration but they sure didn't give a shit. Guess I'm not doing roulettes for a while.

Mirabel actually had four children, one of them is just not pictured. Her husband’s name is Esteban.

The oldest one is named Diego, and he is not pictured. He had the ability to bring his paintings and artwork to life, and he takes after her mother’s artistic side.

Claudia is the second oldest. She has the ability to speak and communicate with the dead, and she is only a year older than the third daughter:

Inez, the main character of the story, has the ability to jump through time. She is at odds with her older siblings, but is extremely close with the youngest:

Maya, had the ability to control the water, and make big waves. She loves Inez and her Tia Luisa.

Isabela has twin girls, because she had one relationship with a man, and that was apparently enough for her.

Rosa is the older of the two, has the ability to charm others using her words, and she usually does so to help them heal emotionally.

Liliana has the ability to animate inanimate objects, and move them with her mind.

Luisa

Valentina (yes, named after Mirabel), has the ability to grow and shrink on command.

Ivan, her younger brother, is the first Madrigal to not have a gift since Mirabel.

Camilo

Emilia is Camilo’s wife, who is a rivals to lover’s situation. They constantly got the leads in musicals and plays, but didn’t like each other very much and argued constantly, until they eventually got together.

Clara is their daughter, and she has the power to produce light.

Dolores

Mariana is Dolores and Mariano’s daughter, named after her father, and has the power of invisibility.

Their second child, Pedro, is named after their great grandfather. He has the power to grant wishes.

Carmen can control sound waves and is quite the musician and dancer. She sometimes speeds up the music so everyone else can’t keep up with her.

Her second youngest son, Carlos, has the power to fly, and her youngest son, Alejandro, has the power to produce force fields.

Notes:

I haven’t decided whether or not to give Bruno a child, or at the very least give him a significant other, but right now the answer is probably no. At this point in the AU, Antonio is not married.

I will also list these characters from oldest to youngest in another post.

THANK YOU THANK YOU (<-IN THE MARIANA TRENCH OF INSANITY AT THIS POINT) and legitimately, i think phoenix & maya's bond is the highlight of the trilogy. for me and in general. they're each other's best friends no matter which way you look at it. in every way that matters. mia may not have gotten to introduce them the way she wanted (like she was planning to) but my god if it didn't work out anyway. ace attorney is one of those fandoms where i could not care less about anything romance-wise i just want to burn content of phoenix and maya being besties into my brain 24/7. there is no ace attorney trilogy without them.

I know ppl are still fighting to save the show or want a Marina spinoff. But really what does a Marina spinoff look like...

How can a 1 hr ep be based on Marina without the rest of the cast? I just don't see how that would be possible. If it is greenlit it wouldn't last past a season cos I just don't see how there would be enough or fruitful storyline to last that long with just them.

Please know I'm saying this as someone who adores Marina they are hands down the best ship ever!

But I just don't see a spinoff happening. You need the other characters and their storylines too. If they had that they really it's just Station19 all over again.

Would it really be interesting to just see them being mom's and working and raising a family? That's not enough. Sorry but it's true.

It's only worth it if the whole show is saved but they can definitely do much more and add much more Marina in it

I mean it depends what the spinoff would consist of, what platform it would be on, what the basis would be, etc. There's a lot of factors that go into it and obviously that makes it a low chance to begin with but you could absolutely have a a show centered around Marina that would obviously have other characters involved too but that doesn't necessarily make it Station 19. I mean look at Season 7 of Station 19...Marina really didn't get much of anything when you think about it. They tried to throw so much at them at once that they barely had any time to go through any of it and especially when their kisses are getting cut, edits are weird and they're getting wordless montages. That's why part of me had felt while watching this season did we really want more of this? Especially if it was going to be like that. Because the treatment of them was completely unacceptable especially compared to the other ships.

I don't know if you watched the Fosters but their spinoff, Good Trouble, was based off of Callie and Mariana, two of the sisters from The Fosters but then had plenty other characters and storylines involved. I don't think anyone expects a spinoff to just consist of Maya and Carina and if they do then that's unrealistic but I would certainly take my chances with a Marina spinoff/other characters that are involved in their storyline as opposed to a bunch of annoying useless men taking up useless screentime which we had to deal with way too often. But I don't see it happening anyway even if it would be nice.

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to share my feelings about today’s episode… lets just say that I am going to be in denial for the rest of the season (that this show is going to end) unless and until it really really ends.

- Carina being panicked about the baby and coming for help to Miranda.

- Carina singing the same song to Liam which she use to sing for Andrea

- Maya talking about getting house to Andy.

- Lastly, Maya coming to home and Carina waiting with Liam and they both go inside.Carina excited about showing the crib to Maya.

- Most awaited Mariana kiss…Carina and Maya slow dancing with Liam and they share a kiss… being in their own little world.

This whole episode was straight out of some fanfic which we all have imagined…we have read so much of fanfic that its hard to ignore or accept the reality that it really happened.

I am so overwhelmed with this episode bcoz we should have got all this moments at the end of season 6 ( i know their healing journey was important) but i was more of this happy moments between this family…its heartwarming and so beautiful…i hope we get to experience that through out the season. I am waiting for more of domestic fluff between them and i hope we get it in the next episode ( Stefania’s first directional debut)

Band name: Beneath the Challenger (BTC). Octavia came up with the name and it’s basically a metaphor for them being super depressed lmao. It comes from the Challenger Deep which is the lowest point on earth beneath the Mariana’s trench.

Fandom: Aquanauts. I hc that Maya figured out the bands meaning and picked based on that, Octavia genuinely loves it and finds it cute. And somehow the fact that the name makes sense to what the band name is makes them feel very seen and comforted tbh

Favorite unreleased single: The Slowest Heart (Which i actually took from Gilded Lily bc that song has heavy Octavia x Seven vibes) They have “the slowest heart” tattooed on there left rib age side boob area lol Although I feel like if she wrote it it’d be closer to the sped up version and a bit angrier mixed with hurt but the lyrics are perfect)

Romance: Seven’s ex. Still has his initials and doesn’t bother to cover it. And they are harboring a very blatant crush on Orion that if they’re being honest about started specifically because Orion seems pretty unattainable and they have no actual expectations of that fantasy becoming a reality (at least at first). Some cute stuff about them and seven tho: I hc fans called them Seven8 cuz Octavia means 8 or i guess Setavia works but Seven8 is so cute to me. And that seven had them in his phone as “8” and Octavia had him as “7 Ducky”

Some backstory:

Octavia is biracial her mom is white and her dad is black (specifically has afro indigenous roots but he was a foster kid so very estranged from these cultures) does not have a good relationship with their parents at all. Their parents didn’t really want kids? Sort of had Octavia because that’s what they were “supposed” to do next after getting married. Octavia is very much just an item checked off a list in a lot of ways regarding them. Very much the type of people who probably shouldn’t have had a kid not because they didn’t provide physically but they’re just emotionally nonexistent and incredibly dismissive lol. So yeah, so she had a very lonely childhood.

They did lots of ballet/contemporary dancing and soft ball which she does still actually enjoy as hobbies presently, but for the most part she’s obsessed with music and making music. They have a bat from highschool that they call “Lucky Lucy” where for two separate games in a row she hit nothing but home runs with it. Now, she takes it to every show and makes everybody touch Lucky Lucy before performing.

Octavia is obsessed with old hollywood glamour and old movies/shows from that era— most specifically Audrey Hempburn. They have several references/quotes from her tattooed on them: “never throw out anyone” is a partial quote from “People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed; never throw anyone out.” that they have tattooed directly under their S.D. tattoo which is my favorite lol and another is “i was born with an enormous need for affection, and a terrible need to give it.” probably on their opposite forearm from S.D. (There’s more but i gotta map them out.) They can do a transatlantic accent, and did so for many months as a teen to annoy their parents.

Lastly, romantic history: before Seven they had a girlfriend, Maria. Who was pretty much their polar opposite—very straight laced, serious, and structured but also incredibly sweet, polite, absolute wifey material—and honestly while she supported Octavia’s dream on a surface level she thought Octavia needed a more concrete plan for the future. They dated for about half of high school and split amicably when it became clear that Octavia wasn’t going to change/Octavia’s underlying feelings for Seven became a bit too obvious to ignore. They’re still in contact and friendly and Maria is married and has two kids.

Post Seven, Octavia had one serious relationship that was on and off for 8 months about a year after their initial split. It was bad. Incredibly toxic content warning type bad. Dean Clayton was the lead singer of another indie band Violet Vapors and was a general misogynistic piece of shit. It was a they just didn’t see the red flags until they were already in it type situation, bc no one advertises themself as a pos partner obvs. She doesn’t like to talk about it and borderline actively ignores it, but if they ever saw him again they’d probably take their bat to him tbh. Octavia is in a muuuuch better place now (comparatively speaking, which i mean the bar is in hell so do with that what ye will) still does drugs and drinks but it’s not nearly as bad as uhhh this era of their life.
