Ultramarine's Bookwalker Guide

A (hopefully) simple guide to how to use Bookwalker! See my Ridibooks guide if you are interested in manhwas and Korean web-novels.

What is Bookwalker? Bookwalker is Kadokawa's official website/app for reading mangas and light novels! There, you can read your favorite series in Japanese, and also their official English translations. It's not region-locked, so anyone can use it!

Before continuing, here is something very important to consider: Bookwalker's website and app have two versions each, a Japanese one and a Global one. The Japanese version has, well, all the mangas and light novels in the original Japanese. Meanwhile, the Global version has official English licenses.

Global version of the app (the one that you'll be able to download, unless you have a Japanese Google account) vs the Japanese browser version. Of course, you can also access the Global version in your browser.

This is relevant because you'll only be able to find WMMAP's (or any other series') Japanese edition on Bookwalker's Japanese version. If Bookwalker doesn't have the translation rights for the series in particular, you won't be able to find it on its Global version. Such is the case for WMMAP, licensed by Seven Seas (Maybe one day this will change).

Alright, alright, but how do I use Bookwalker? As with any other platform, you first need to make an account (top-right corner of your screen, 👤 icon). A nice thing about Bookwalker is that you can register using your Google, Twitter, Facebook, or Apple account! If you are using Bookwalker's Japanese version, I recommend using Chrome or other browsers with a MTL function, so the page is easier for you to navigate.

Buying mangas and light novels. Once again, I'll use WMMAP as an example. As I said above, if the series you want to purchase doesn't have an English version distributed by Bookwalker (such as WMMAP's case), you won't find it on its Global version, no matter if you are using the website or the app. Searching 「ある日、お姫様になってしまった件について」 or "Who Made Me A Princess" on the Global platforms won't give you any results.

Similarly, because of these copy-right issues, you won't be able to find any English translations on the Japanese version of the website.

So, tl;dr, we need to use Bookwalker JP! Once you have your account (which will work on both Bookwalker versions, Japanese and Global), you'll be able to search for 「ある日、お姫様になってしまった件について」 (WMMAP's Japanese title), and buy any of the 9 Japanese volumes released so far. Unlike Ridibooks, here you can only buy WMMAP's full volumes (ebooks), not chapters. The prices will vary depending on the volume, but they are all around 1,000 yen (older volumes are cheaper, and there are often sales).

Using the Japanese version might also be convenient in general because of the favorable dollar-yen exchange rate.

Bookwalker's Coins. As with most manga platforms, Bookwalker has its own currency that you need to buy to then purchase any manga or light novel. It works in the same way as Tapas' ink and Tappytoon's points. The coins are worth almost the same as yen, but with a 1% accumulation rate. Selecting the "buy coins" option in your user profile will allow you to recharge the currency.

There, you can choose how much you want to recharge. Another nice thing about Bookwalker is that it accepts overseas credit cards (see the picture for the ones that work) and Paypal! Also, remember to check the purchase confirmation. After that, you just write your credit card/Paypal information, and you should be ready to buy your favorite manga or light novel!

If you want to use Bookwalker's Global version to purchase a series in English (as I said, you won't be able to find WMMAP here, please keep this in mind, or you could waste your money), the system is very similar, you have to buy "Points" in USD. Pictures for reference.

Once you have already purchased WMMAP, you'll be able to find it in your library (📚 icon).

You can filter out other books writing 「ある日、お姫様になってしまった件について」 in the search bar!

Also very important information: You will be able to read WMMAP on Bookwalker's Global version too (be it the website or the app) if you have already purchased it on the Japanese site. In the pictures shown above you can see screenshots of said app. At the bottom, you have your library, where all books you have bought are organized according to their date of acquisition. Here you will be able to read anything you have bought, in English or Japanese. It's only to buy Japanese titles that you have to specifically use the Japanese site, but only for purchasing purposes. After that, you'll be able to read it on any of Bookwalker's versions.

Surprise Tumblr round of commissions!

New opening for "commissions"! I say that with quotation marks because I'm not looking to monetize this hobby (I want to have fun! Also, that wouldn't work under their license!), so the process won't be standard.

1) What can you get? One hoop, 10cm diameter (as in the pictures), depicting something from an episode of The Magnus Archives (check episode availability at link in my bio!). I don't do full color portraiture, so it'll have to be more abstract or else line art only. 

2) How does this work? You message me on this app with the episode in question, and, if there's a specific scene or imagery you're interested in or a preference for straight up embroidery versus the mixed fluffy stuff I do, that as well. We discuss if that works, and if we agree, you donate 50 US dollars to The Okra Project (food for black trans folx), your local Food Not Bombs (food for people in need), Palestine Children Relief Fund, Donbas SOS (Ukrainian civilians), RAICES (legal services for immigrants), or ActBlue (abortion funds) and I make you a hoop. There won't be revisions, because a) that's hard to do with embroidery and b) like I said, I want to have fun, so you'll have to trust that you'll like what I make. I will give you process updates though if you'd like, so you can have some input then. Please only do this if you are confident you won't regret it. When the hoop is done, you PayPal me the cost of shipping (typically between 7 and 15 Euros, ships from Germany), and then I mail it out to you.

3) How long will this take? Well, once I start stitching your hoop, it should take about a week or two. But since I'll do these in the order that they come in in and have a day job, it may take a few weeks for me to get started. Figure in another month for it to arrive outside of Europe.

4) Will more slots open up? Maybe! So long as it's fun, I will do more.

5) 50 dollars?? Really?? Yes really, and that's actually very, very cheap given that these take me up to 20 hours depending on the level of detail and techniques used. Plus material costs. Plus it goes to a good cause, so there will be no negotiating on this point.

Birthday Help, I'm sorry. (I'm not gonna tag you, but you should know that you've helped me tremendously and I DO NOT want you to see this and be like "well shit". love you long time, just gotta go through my panic mode sometimes and birthdays really bring it out of me).

Hey, I have received help in the last few years that I couldn't have gone without and I'm so grateful and also constantly embarrassed and ashamed that I need help. I feel like I need it more than most other folks, and then I remember I don't really have family nor a significant other like most households.

I can't guarantee I could pay anything back or I wouldn't be in this position anyways but if you can think of something I can do as repayment, I will do my best.

My birthday is on the 17th. I haven't quite figured out how I'm gonna buy textbooks for classes that start the 27th, one of which is about $200 for the lab kit since I'm an online student. If it helps, I've been on Deans' list twice and honor roll once (found out my mom had cancer and kind of fucked off), that was just my first year. This is the start of my second. So far, it's just my biology class that has the needed purchases. Oregon state tries to reduce textbook costs so I'm hoping my other three classes will be providing materials again.

I'm also maybe hoping to be able to make myself a little cake or something (like $4), and I'm still trying to not have my electric shut off or my car repo'd (both are many, many dollars). The other big one is a pair of shoes for work, I've been wearing the same non-slip crocs the entire time at work (3 years in april). The slip resistance is mostly scuffed off and I have plantar fasciitis so it's been fun. I'd just get another pair and they're like $35. I tried to get another pair and hadn't realized my credit line with kohl's had lapsed without warning.

I work full time, I'm a full time student when it's in session. I give plasma so I can eat and have gas for work. I just don't know if I can swing a second job and be mentally well enough to exist (again, for years I worked like 90 hours a week, that's how I got my car in the first place, and then I moved back across the country 3 months before the pandemic really got kickin').

Anything helps, ya know? I've given the car people over $500 so it's put the other things on the wayside. $233 to keep my electric on. So I'm behind on a lot of other things. Late fees are killer, and overdraft fees and negative balance every check because of it. Just keeps rolling.

I begged for a raise and got .50 and my new general manager gave me a referral bonus in the system to help with my car. I'm trying so hard.

What I learned from donating money

A while ago (a while in this context means maybe a year or so), I actually donated money to one of those donation posts that make the rounds on tumblr on occasion. It was from one of the people that I followed at the time, someone I didn't know and had never spoken to.

I'm not a very charitable person, or at least not generous. At least not on the internet; if I have cash on hand and someone is begging, I'll likely give it to them, but mostly because I don't really have much use for cash these days, especially now that I no longer have a car and the nearest ATM is probably five or six miles from me. But on the internet I'm tightfisted.

I think it's the lack of clarity as to where your money is actually going. I've always held the somewhat cynical view that if you give your money to a charity, maybe about one percent of that donation is going to end up where you intend it to. Obviously that differs from organization to organization, but the same concept is generally sound; if you can't see where the money is going, from start to finish, donor to recipient, you should assume that almost none of it is going where you want it to.

I'm not sure what made this post I saw on tumblr different. Maybe because you can have a reasonable read on a person on tumblr rather than a faceless organization. Of course, you can lie about who you are on tumblr, but as long as things are consistent people can get a picture of the person behind a blog.

It really was just an idle whim. I thought maybe it might make me feel pleased with myself, or like a good person, or something like that. It was a relatively small amount, not the typical e-begging for thousands of dollars, just something like eighty dollars or so. I paypalled them more than they asked for, either a hundred dollars or a hundred and twenty. They messaged me on paypal very appreciatively and asked who I was; I didn't say anything. I understood, for a very brief moment, the kind of smug satisfaction wealthy donors to theaters must have when they choose to remain anonymous and then go back and look at the back of a playbill and see their donation listed. It's a very small and common human joy, knowing a secret and keeping it from everyone else.

I felt very vaguely happy. There's a danger in magical thinking, in the idea that someone only has to achieve some goal or milestone or landmark that will, in and of itself, change themselves or their lives or their outlook. I have learned through bitter experience that nothing works like this, that you are who you are with very little changes unless you're capable of changing your worldview by yourself, which very few people are capable of.

And it would have stayed at that, with me feeling very vaguely happy that I had done a nice thing for someone, if it wasn't for what happened next. The person I had given the money to reblogged the post. There was no mention that the goal had been reached, exceeded even. Just the same e-begging post asking for help.

I didn't necessarily feel betrayed or cheated or anything that ridiculous; I was more just impressed by the audacity. I very easily could have called them out for it, if I had felt the urge to; they certainly would have known that I must have been someone following them, that I would have seen the post being reblogged.

Now, I understand that they can do whatever the hell they like and that just because I paid the entire amount doesn't mean that they have to stop begging for more. Maybe it's a fundamental difference in worldviews; I've been in relatively desperate situations before but I've never liked to throw myself on the goodwill of strangers, and if it had been me I don't think I'd have kept begging after that. And me giving them a gift doesn't place any sort of obligation on them to act any sort of way; it's not like they're signing a contract with me that stipulates that they have to do something in exchange for the money; it was a gift, given freely without any ability for me to take it back.

I was disappointed, reasonably so I think, but I had learned something. I had given the gift because I wanted to be acknowledged, even anonymously, as having done someone a good turn. I wanted to see the post reblogged with the little meter filled and a little sentence saying how grateful they were because I, whoever the hell I was, had helped them out.

I've always been mostly a Stirnerite and known that nobody does anything out of the goodness of their hearts, that every action, no matter how charitable or innocent, is done out of some calculated want, some logical step on the subconscious mind's internal playing field to bring you one step closer to a goal, no matter how arbitrary or inconsequential. Thankfully, I rarely get concrete confirmation of this, even despite believing in the truth of it. The people I work with and live with are kind to me and I'm kind to them, and for the most part the raw selfishness of the individuals around me is veiled.

But it's good to get a reminder every now and then. I was selfish; they were selfish. It was the only possible outcome, and if it hadn't gone like this, if I had gotten exactly what I wanted, it would only have been an affirmation of the selfishness that had lead me to donate the money in the first place.

So I won't be doing that again.

i saw a thread on twitter saying that otw elections being only for $10+ donators is intentionally leaving out people from the global south and other financially challenged people. i know that it's kind of BS but i cant exactly put my finger on why

It's not entirely BS.

Literally any price point has this issue. $10 is quite a chunk of change for some countries and is less than 2 fancy coffees for others.

We discussed this when we were setting up OTW. We opted not to have a labor-instead-of-money thing because it would involve keeping "Fannish name X is wallet name Y" records. I think we can all see that this practice would lead nowhere good.

(In nonprofits that are some uncontested "save the children" stuff, I think it would make sense to allow people to donate services instead of $10. People serve in those under their wallet names anyway.)

We also opted not to make it $1 because if you put it very, very low, it's not an effective deterrent to people from rich countries who would misuse it.

People do try to game the Hugos, which is expensive, but it's people who might well already have attended those cons or bought the supporting memberships. For a lot of things, once you get above a couple of dollars, the temptation to buy 5 in your friends' names goes away.

Moreover, this is not the only way that money shit is unfair internationally.

In the early days, we couldn't accept donations from a lot of places. I'm sure there are still some where it's an issue. There are tons of fans who could save up the equivalent of $10, but they can't get a credit card or access to Paypal or any of the easy ways to send money to the US.

Being an international organization of this type means providing services to a wide array of people who simply can't participate financially.

Building something like AO3 is inherently the work of people with more resources for the purpose of benefiting a larger community with fewer.

It sucks that some passionate people simply cannot participate in voting. But that's the reality of organizations: sometimes, practicality has to trump being scrupulously "fair" about giving absolutely everyone a turn.

Making a system where the barriers to entry were so low that douchebags in the US could flood in with spurious voting accounts would also not be fair to people from the global south who just want an uncensored archive that stays up.

I think it's less that the OTW rule itself is unfair and more that it highlights inequality that already exists and is a fact of life.

In an ideal world, sure, OTW would find a way to charge different prices depending on local cost of living. Maybe they will one day. But doing that requires time and resources. There is no magic "Be fair and nice to everyone! It costs nothing!" answer here.

So basically, I think that observation is true as a literal fact.

The reason it smells fishy is that you can tell the people saying it have ulterior motives.

They want to pretend that the ~noble oppressed people~ of the world would side with their pro-censorship message. Or they want other whiny people from rich countries to agree that OTW is Big Unfair Meanies. It's not actually about figuring out how to get the ability to vote to specific fans who genuinely want it.

I'll also note that you don't have to be a voting member to be a volunteer or a staff member or to run for the Board. Someone with few financial resources but with time and skills could still have a fair amount of power in OTW.

There are other practical realities aside from money that are also not fair, like many volunteers being in one time zone and not another, so realtime meetings will suck for the outlier. OTW operates in English and has a strong American contingent; culturally and linguistically, that excludes people who are nonetheless welcome to post works on AO3. Working for OTW requires a lot of free time and specific skills. Not everyone has those.

Life ain't fair.

I've been thinking of doing this for a while, but I noticed I always have a lot of requests, about 1,000, and most of them don't get written- either because it's not my cup of tea or I just don't have the time. So this will be kind of like, you get to bump your request up to the front of the queue with 100% guarantee it'll be finished. All commissions will be digital and posted on this blog, and you will be cited as the very generous benefactor who paid for it :)

Payment must be through friends and family on Paypal, or via venmo. For right now, I'm only doing one-

Blurb Level - $2.50

This will probably be around anything from 250-500 words

It'll either be a short imagine or a bulleted list

Anything longer than that will be charged the industry rate of $0.01 a word, and you give me a word count. For Example, You want another part of the Damian Wayne School Series, and you want 1,000 words. It would be $10, any words I happen to go over are on me, you don't have to pay me anything more if I happen to write a 2,000 word part.

All requests are at my discretion, and I’m free to reject any commission if I feel like I’m not the right writer for the job. As always, I don’t do ‘dark content’ so any requests consisting of anything that might need a trigger warning will be rejected.

Birthday commission gift thing so I can buy myself gifts

Hi I know this is super lame and needy but tomorrow is my birthday and I deadass haven't bought myself anything nice or anything for leisure since I moved five months ago and I'd really appreciate if people would be willing to maybe give me five or ten dollars so I could go out on my birthday and get myself some art supplies or buy myself a custom shirt or something. I know this isn't like a donation post about homelessness but it is something that's a result of my disability and poverty and the fact that I've had to support my family of me and my spouse and cat with my money and had to also support someone else's drug habits for a year now while giving up my own hobbies so.... I am in a serious financial bind. 😥 If anyone is in a position to listen & help or signal boost, pls keep reading...

This is from my apartment complex. I am in low-income housing. I called them & sent them proof I could pay on the 23rd. I told them I could (just barely) put 100 down now & they said that was too little.

They said they would file for eviction on the 16th, which adds $150 to my rent. They will cancel the court date and eviction on the 23rd when I pay.

But that doesn't cancel the $150 filing fee.

Idk where that $150 would come from. Idky they think it's fair that someone who cannot pay should be forced to pay even more??? That makes no sense. I can only just barely afford my rent every month as is.

These are from my energy company. I apparently owe them over $600. I genuinely do not know how this happened. We were on the phone for a very long time trying to figure it out & I was in tears for the latter portion of it because I swear I paid.

I usually keep record of my payments via taking a picture of my receipt since they are electronic, but my dog chewed up my phone (which I have pics of if need be for evidence) and broke it, so I had to get a replacement phone sent to me from the insurance company & nothing transferred from the old phone, so all my pics were wiped.

I found no record in my emails, either.

The meds I am taking to try to go into remission and the autoimmune disease itself both cause brain fog and issues with time warping, so it is possible maybe I skipped a month or something, but I highly doubt I would have skipped up to 600+ dollars worth of payments.

I have tons of electronic and hard copy calendars & they are all synced and constantly updated so that I know when payments are due. I also have text and email reminders sent to me, but I could find no reminders in my email for MONTHS now until they were telling me they were going to shut my power off if I didn't pay this. Idk why I was not sent reminders for months???

In the end, I agreed to set up a payment plan. Paying, like... 50-60ish on top of whatever my electric bill is every month for 12 months. It was the lowest they could go.

I can barely afford my electric bill as it is, so idk how I will be able to do this? They did give me a list of charities in my area so I will be using what little energy I have to call around & see if any of them would be willing to help me pay this. Idk how those work (they're mostly churches???), so I'm just gonna try & see what happens. 🤔

On top of all that, I *think* this is telling me my Medicaid has been cancelled but I'm not 100% sure?????

I'm going through treatment for a very serious, disabling problem that should last ~1 year and rn Medicaid is picking up what my Medicare doesn't cover and some of my doctors/specialists and treatments are medicaid only.

If I lose this, I'm basically done.

I know they'll do backpay if I get it back, but Idk if I *will* get it back. I'll be trying to get it back, but in the meantime, I guess I'll just have to pay out of pocket, idk??? Which I do not have.

I have lost almost ALL autonomy due to this autoimmune disease, which (in a very simplified form) is basically my immune cells "eating" my muscle tissue. I can barely get out of bed. Treatment should put me in remission & give me my life back. I am seeing a rheumatologist, neurologist, dermatologist, PCP, physical therapist, psychiatrist, psychologist, and going to a holistic pain treatment center that does a different kind of physical therapy to bring down pain levels (which I was put into that program by my rheum). All of these are in relation to & necessary for my disease. I am going through TONS of testing almost weekly now & trying out treatments like IVIG and chemo where I am in the hospital hooked up to an IV for 4-6+ hrs of that day and the cost of those things without Medicaid picking up what Medicare doesn't cover is astronomical. I have to sign waivers every time I get my blood drawn (which is almost weekly now), do tests, and do treatments saying I will pay if Medicaid does not pick up the extra.

I already have crippling medical debt; I don't need more. I'm scared they won't let me do any more tests or treatments if they see I am just letting it all go to collections & am not paying.

This could mean the difference between having a life worth living (to me) where I am happy & thriving & autonomous or being bed-bound & living a life of just existing from day to day & miserable & in pain & suffering & unable to do anything for myself. This is literally life and death for me because I wouldn't be able to handle continuing to live in the latter scenario. I cannot handle living like I am now. Knowing my treatments are progressing is what keeps me going. Knowing I can go into remission is what keeps me going. Knowing my future is one completely different from now is what keeps me going. But if I cannot have that and am destined to live in this current state, it's just not worth it. I don't know a person alive who would want to live like this.

Finally, my anger noodle needs to get to the vet for MULTIPLE things. Nothing is, like... life threatening or super immediate like his cancer was last year, but they're things that need to be addressed in terms of preventative care & to make sure he isn't in pain.

He needs his trachea checked, possibly x-rays for that, maybe more...

He needs some medication updates, needs a physical, needs a full groom & nail clip under anesthesia (for those who are not familiar with Echo, he has extreme fear-based aggression & usually gets this done under anesthesia; since I worked with him so much, he had his first non-anesthesia nail clip at the beginning of quarantine, but he has gotten worse during quarantine & with my muscle eating disease, I can no longer restrain him & don't have the physical strength to run a brush through his thicker fur as his winter coat is in, so I can no longer groom certain areas of him at home, so his tummy & back legs are matted & I fear he may need to be shaved... which breaks my heart since you don't shave double coat dogs unless medically necessary.), he needs a full physical, & needs to be checked over for MCT's.

He may also need a fecal test or something else, as he has been having odd bowel movements. 😥 His tummy has been upset lately.

I have been crying myself to sleep every single night & often during the day because I cannot get him to the vet. No, it isn't urgent or life threatening. But he is reverse sneezing more than normal & I worry about tracheal collapse, which is a common small dog thing & even MORE common in pomeranians specifically. Every time he has a fit, I think "Oh god, this is it. This is the time I'm gonna have to rush him to the e-vet & get slammed with a huge bill & he is not gonna be okay..."

It breaks my heart to see his legs & belly matted. He is horrible about letting me groom him coz of his aggression so he only gets a full grooms at the vet, but I do short grooming sessions at home with him nightly. Takes about 2 hours just to do the majority of one side of him (not even all of it; just most) coz he needs breaks & lots of praise every few strokes or he will tear me to shreds & hurt himself snapping on the undercoat rake. 😥

But now that my autoimmune disease has atrophied my muscles to the point holding up my phone without something to prop it up feels like I am lifting weights & tires my arms out with a lactic acid burn & pain, I can no longer groom him with the patience he needs & can only groom in 20 minute intervals at the VERY longest. By the time I have gotten one leg done during the week, his entire other side is matted. 😞 Matting on dogs---especially double coat dogs---hurts them. It's like if someone were to wrap your hair around their fingers & then pull it taut. It's a constant pulling pressure on their skin... it's painful & irritates the epidermis. I feel miserable feeling the matting on his back legs & tummy & now feeling the mats beginning to form on the rest of him. He hates me working them out, even with the detangling spray. I know it must hurt so much...

So he may need to be shaved at this point & that will destroy me. I feel sick thinking about it. But anything to get him out of pain. Maybe it is what's best for him while I go through this year of treatment & get my muscles back. But in order to do that, I need to get him to the vet.

The stress of not being able to get him to a vet is tearing me apart & literally making me physically ill.

He is my world. My everything. My #1. My heart dog. My priority in life. My entire universe revolves around him. I would do anything for him. Not a single person, animal, thing, etc, comes before him. It is KILLING me that I cannot provide proper care for him right now. I always always always make sure to sacrifice for him if need be & his things ALWAYS come first, even if it means I'm not eating or not paying bills or whatever. As long as he is taken care of & his needs & wants are met, nothing else matters to me. And right now........ I feel he is suffering because of my finances & the fact my treatment with building my muscles up is not going fast enough.

I cannot control the latter one, but the first one is something I can at least ask for help for. So that is what I am doing.
