#mcu fandom keep hating on sambucky

i like sambucky to a certain extent but i think im just too loyal to stucky to really commit to it but regardless i can see why people like sambucky and can understand the dynamic. recently on both twit and tumblr i have seen an increase in hate towards stucky for reasons that just seem soo stupid and i can NOT get that 😭😭 i know there has been a HUGE issue with racism in the mcu fandom in general and specifically with stucky vs sambucky but this is not what i have seen (some) people complaining about or their reasons for disliking stucky.

i keep seeing people calling steve a bad friend to bucky, that stucky has no chemistry or is a bland ship, that they didn’t even care for each other, etc., and it leads me to think that people who are saying these things are, for lack of a better word, unimaginative.

i think it’s pretty hard to miss the devotion and love steve and bucky have for each other in the cap trilogy, and regardless of if you like the ship or not i think it’s worth mentioning 😭 but this specific type of hate towards stucky seems like people who can only envision stories within hard lines of canon and in the current state of the mcu where stucky is no longer really a plausible possibility 🤔

one of the great purposes of fanfic and fandom is to ask “what if?” what else happened between the characters that wasn’t explicitly stated in canon? what could have been had the mcu taken a different route? what if these characters existed in a different universe, in different forms, in different times?

i really don’t mean this as any hate towards sambucky or their shippers but it’s just a pattern i’ve noticed 🤔

5. Do you respond to comments?

Yes. Because if I write a comment, I like to hear from the author. It doesn't have to be much but it just makes me happy to hear that my comment made the author happy. And I think interaction is important to keep a fandom "alive" (even if often I don't know what to say but I try).

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I don't write angsty endings. But I'm a little worried that people won't agree with me that Match Made on Earth has a happy ending.

7. What's the fic your write with the happiest ending?

As I said, they all have happy endings, but the ending of Four Chord Songs and Sentimental Lyrics is particularly sappy. I was wondering if that love song in the last chapter was *too much*, but then I thought: nope, it's Anakin, *too much* is his personality trait.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

This year I got two very rude anon comments on one of my Obikin fics accusing me of horrible things. The accusations felt pretty generic and did not fit to that particular story at all, but they still left me a little shaken. Fortunately, the people in the Obikin discord were really kind about it and helped to cheer me up.

Back on FFNET I received the occasional "ew, they're not gay, why would you write that?" Also there were some people who were angry at the way I wrote Obi-Wan, saying things like "how can you say he's your favourite character and then characterise him as weak/flawed/incompetent... and make so many bad things happen to him?"

BUT, all in all, fandom has been a positive experience and the many good interactions far outweigh the odd rude comment.

Does one awkward sex scene per multi chapter fic count? (No.)

No.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I don't think so, not that I know of.

Yes, a long time ago on FFNET when I still wrote Harry Potter fic.

Step into Christmas with me. So far, I've managed to add two chapters every season. If I continue at that pace, I might finish it in two more years...

Beginnings and endings.

The long middle parts that always become too long and repetitive.

Okay, I have Opinions on this!

I don't like it and don't see the merits of it. It often just feels like the author wants to show off their language skills. But as a reader it takes me out of a story. I don't want to check footnotes or use google translate in the middle of reading.

Servants of the Force is definitely not my best writing but it's still my favourite fic anyway because I've never put so much effort into a fic before and I'm proud that I finished it.

I think as far as andor goes, everyone is a bit too harsh on Vel? I think she did the best she could in the circumstances she was put into - especially for the Aldani mission - she seems younger than a lot of her team, but she managed to keep them afloat pretty well, and she was a solid leader - the mission was a success after all.

I think as far as the MCU goes.... I have an entire desseration written about tony stark lol - like seriously SO MANY PEOPLE get him wrong! They either write him too arrogant or too lovey dovey - but forget the angst?? I'm not talking about the smaller bits of angst - I think it would be utterly scary and worrisome and MISERABLE and sad to live in his head.

Where is the angst?! Where are the daddy issues? Where is the "I was better than my dad since I was 4 so he HATED me and would have maybe even killed me so I latched onto to the other father figure, turns out he also didn't really like me that much, he was an enabler looking for a meal ticket?" where is the UTTER existentialism?! Where is the Cassandra levels of depressed screaming at the tower, chained, DOOMED to know the future but never to be believed?!

7. What character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how the fandom acts about them? I don't know if HATE is the right word, but there are way too many dean stans in the supernatural fandom lol - the whole point is that they are all fucking fucked up beyond repair - Dean IS an asshole, and selfish a lot (in my opinion) - and he expected way too much of Sam, and Cas, and he was kind of an asshole sometimes - not to say that he didn't also suffer but yk - just opinions. 14. that one thing you see in fics all the time

16. what are your writing strengths? ooooo i think i'm good at realistic dialogue and character dynamics—i have spent hours of my life on fandomwiki looking at different character's quotes and watching videos of their interaction with other characters because that's something so important to me.

i think i'm good at balancing angst and humor too?? idk the walking dead really shaped my writing style because u can have a silly scene and then 2 seconds later someone is dead on the floor. hope to carry that vibe through everything i do.

17. what are your writing weaknesses? i am so bad at describing settings and character actions. i can always see the scene in my mind but on paper it turns into they are at a house. peter sits down in the chair, and is sad. and it gets to a point where i just give up on trying to fix it

18. thoughts on dialogue in another language? ough if i ever write dialogue in another language i'll be consulting someone who speaks said language (which is what i actually have done!!!! i have a fic coming out soon w a spanish title and i asked aster-argent for help:)). or doing the thing people do where they just put the text in italics and write ," he said in spanish or some shit.

idk for the most part i stay away from it (ignoring the throwaway, casada harley joke i make in my parkner series) because at the end of the day i am a white girl who learned how to count to 10 in spanish because of dora and took 3 years of german.

19. first fandom you wrote in? ok so. i was 11 and on quotev, writing a chatfic about the bands twenty one pilots, panic at the disco, my chemical romance, and fall out boy. the fic is still up and it makes me nauseous to think about

i think technically i had an ldshadowlady fic out on wattpad before that but it was a blatant ripoff of another fic so. i don't count it

i'll put down my roots when i'm dead i'm just so proud of it idk. first time i've ever really met a deadline and probably the most passionate i'd been about getting a fic out since r&r began? i just love the whole thing.

Is Close the Closest Star? this one is definitely a tie with the several other angst oneshots i put out around the same time, but idk something about this fic is so special to me. it's like 6 months old and i know my writing's improved since then, but i'll always go back and reread

okok last one sorry ur making me pick my favorite child. Unrotting Your Insides, Unrooting Your Limbs i am such a sucker for recovery fics sorry. i've written several fics about bulimia but this is my fav because it's just. so soft.

i wasn't really in the mcu fandom before tfatws and wow. coming across bucky stans has been like getting slapped with a live fish even tho i should have seen it coming. i hope bucky's characterization keeps going in ways that piss off his ridiculous racist stans. funnily enough, i felt the show finally made him an interesting character.

Let me tell you Anon! Bucky up, because I couldn’t agree with you more. Yes to everything you wrote. Especially about pissing off the stans.

I'm not saying this lightly, but they are the worst. The worst.

I've rarely seen this level of disconnection to reality in a fandom (expect maybe the Reylos) and I still love Bucky's character but sometimes I see some posts and I want to ... break things. They manage to make EVERYTHING about Bucky. For them, anyone around Bucky is bad and Bucky has never done anything wrong a day in his  life.

I was just surprised because I had never experienced this before, because when the Sambucky ship was smaller, the nonsense was coming from outside the fandom...But now we’re seeing it from Sambucky shippers as well, like what???

Here's a non exhaustive list of stuff Bucky stans have said, there’s so much more:

- I’ll start with the wildest post I’ve ever seen from a stan:

- Whenever there’s an accomplishement for Anthony or Sam/ they manage to make it about Bucky and ask why didn’t Bucky or Seb get it too?? They did it when it was announced that Sam Wilson was getting the shield, thy did it when it was announced that Anthony had been signed for a Cap 4 movie,

- They did it when Anthony was nominated to the HCA Awards for his Captain America role and not Sebastian:

Because no...the nomination couldn’t possibly be because of his talent, right?

- They never congragulate Sam or Anthony, or any costars their only reaction is: What about Bucky, why weren't there any announcement for him too? And when you tell them that this moment should be about Sam/Anthony, they invent the most insane lies like " Sebastian was promised a Solo movie, we have been waiting for 10 years.”

- They treat Sam as the bad guy but never acknowledge when Bucky f*cks up, or when he’s rude."Sam is so awful to Bucky, he treats Bucky like he was responsible for his acts as the Winter Soldier" When did Sam ever do that btw?, “Sam was awful for saying “cyborg brain”

- If you ask them why they always imagine Sam taking care of Bucky and never they other way around, they snap.

- And when you point out that in a healthy relationship one partner shouldn’t be the other’s therapist, they can be a confident but not a therapist, and that Bucky should see an actual therapist... they snap.

- They don’t respect tagging

- The racist posts that were flooding about Ayo, but never mention how Bucky betrayed Ayo’s trust.

-They imagined their own version of MCU Bucky and do not care that it doesn’t match what we have seen on screen.

.- “Uwu why is everyone calling out Bucky’s behavior in the police scene`?”..But then they don’t even think about how Sam must have felt and how the scene was about Sam, not Bucky.

- Comparing Bucky's experience to Isaiah's... Yikes

- Called Sam “petulant and childish” for asking Bucky why he cared so much about the shield since it had nothing to do with him.

- Let’s not even talk about how a lot of them talk about Steve.

- Whenever they make a racist post, instead of listening and ameninding it, they get defensive, start saying things that are actually worst than the original post.

And when they are being called out  on all of this their response is: uwu why does everyone hate Bucky??`? newsflash, it's not Bucky we hate, it's his stans.

I'm a Sambucky shipper but when I see a f*cked up Sambucky post I either call it out or block the OP, but Bucky stans don't do that, they just rally and write rants about how “not all Bucky stans are like that”, and that we shouldn't be generalizing. And I know that because my asks are always open. Here are the asks I get whenever I mention the problem with Bucky stans, these were sent a couple of months ago bty, just using them as an example:

So apparently calling out sh*tty/racist behavior is policing now... So this is basically how the Bucky fandom is, and the so-called “normal” fans remain silent which leads me to wonder where they stand.

And to be clear, I received these asks when I made a post about how I don’t like it when the fandom focuses on Bucky and sidelines Sam. I wasn’t even hating on Bucky or anything so...

This is why I cannot deal with Bucky stans. They live in an alternate reality where a different TV show was airing, and where emitting even the slightest criticism towards their character or their fandom is “hate”... Bucky is always the victim not matter what happens and so are they.

And then there are the  And the “regular fans”, the unproblematic ones, instead of calling out the problematic Bucky stans, come in my asks to complain about how my posts are “anti-Bucky”. Spoiler alert: They’re not.

In the end the people calling out f*cked up posts become the bad guys because they are " generalizing", but they never challenge or call out the problematic blogs directly. So excuse me to "generalize", but if a problematic or racist post in you fandom doesn't bother you, I'm going to assume that you lowkey agree with it. If you don’t have a problem with the toxic stans but you have a problem with people calling out the toxic stans, then I have bad news for you.

If the toxic stans really were a small portion of the fandom, then the problematic posts would be challenged a little more.

I love Sam Wilson as a character but, believe me, I have always been a pro Bucky Barnes blog back in 2016/2017, I was sharing petitions for a Winter Soldier solo movie, but the Bucky stans sometimes make me want to stay away from the character because they are just unsufferable.

The only stans who come even close to the level of toxicity of Bucky stans are Tony and Kylo Ren stans, but at least Kylo and Tony are awful characters on their own...but Bucky stans manage to make a great character with a lot of potential like Bucky despicable.

TL:DR: I love Bucky & hate the stans.

What I love the most about Samsteve is that Sam is Steve’s equal and vice versa. With Stucky and Sambucky, there’s a little imbalance in power dynamic and overall characterization. But Sam and Steve just fits together. Their chemistry is so strong! There’s an instant bond, a shared life experience! 

It really saddens me whenever people underestimated Sam’s role in Steve’s life, just as much as I hate it when they underestimated Sam’s role in Bucky’s life.  Of course there’s a connection that comes with knowing each other for decades. But who’s to say Sam cannot read Steve as well as Bucky, maybe even better? And who’s to say Sam doesn’t know what Bucky needs, better than Steve can? 

The way people REFUSED to see Sam as more than sidekick/bestie for both Steve (especially Steve, because there’s even less samsteve fics than sambucky) and Bucky is so, so frustrating. I once read a Steve centric fanfic where Steve said ‘he’s not my new best friend’ to Bucky in front of Sam and the writer didn’t give a chance to Sam to address his feelings. It hurts so much.

Sam is kind, but he’s not afraid to call you on your bullshit. Sam is strong, but he’s a big softie. He’s confident and smart, but knows his limit, therefor he doesn’t have an ego in him, unlike Steve who sometimes lets his ego get the best of him. He’s also incredibly skillful, which makes me cringe if writers write about his insecurities as if he’s a low class soldier among other Avengers. Is it really that hard to believe that Sam is a lot more than you’re see in him? why? cause he’s black and doesn’t have the super serum?? fuck you.

I just want to end this little rant by saying thank you for everyone who is keeping Samsteve fandom alive. I don’t care if there aren’t so many of us, at least we’re happy in our little bubble. If nobody gonna fight for Sam Wilson to the death, we will.

Anyway, Samsteve > literally any other ship in the MCU and that’s a FACT.

the only thing im getting from all of this is a reminder of how much i hate when fans or interviewers ask actors about fandom stuff. for the love of god just leave fandom alone in the shadows where it belongs. especially shipping. actors shouldnt have to be interacting with any of this cringey shit for their own protection and for the protection of the fandom.

This stupid fandom is really making me defend actors and celebrities, huh? But okay, here we go ;-;

You're mostly right. I really agree that the actors should be left alone and not asked about majority of this stuff, because it's literally not their job to care about it. They are paid for acting in the movies and later for promoting them in the media. I pretty sure that nowhere in their contract was there anything about keeping up with shipping culture, being nice to the Twitter crowd, or fullfilling the wishes of the fandom by confirming their headcanons.

Not to mention that fandom is a complicated landscape (well... a minefield) and it's very easy to make some group of people angry if you don't say the right thing. Because it's very obvious than no matter what kind of answer Anthony would have given it would infuriate someone. If he said "Sambucky is canon" he would make the homophobes angry along with the entire crowd of people who prefer to ship Bucky with... ekhm... other character and are very vocal about it. If he said that he likes the idea, but it's not a canon relationship, people would go back to that idiotic "Sambucky is just queerbaiting!" discussion AGAIN and fandom would be angry over that.

There's no winning here. He was set up to say something controversial. Of course he could have been more vague about it or choose different words, but let's be real... There are thousands of people who watch his every move and wait for him to trip, so they have something to hate him for even more. And part of the reason why I cannot stand by the group who criticizes him right now is that majority of the fans who were the most angry about it sound like they would've acted exactly the same regardless of his answer.

And just to clarify... I don't think fandom stuff is inherently cringey or bad, and that it should be hidden in the shadows from everyone else. There are some harmless parts of fandoms that could be brought up in front of the actors. (And it's not that hard to decide what is or isn't appropriate.) It's not like we should be ashamed of liking characters or fictional ships... it's fun. But like I said before: these people are not paid to deal with that. And they are not familiar with every drama and frustrated subcommunity that exists in the fandom, because why the hell would they be?

So bringing it up in the interviews seems rather unprofessional. Interviewers should just ask actors like Anthony about the production process, their own interpretations of their roles, their upcoming projects that are not in the MCU, or I don't know... what other comic book stories they would want to adapt if they could. Plus maybe some more serious questions that are relevant to Sam Wilson's story.

Asking actors about fandom and especially shipping is like giving them a set of buttons and saying "you have to press one of these... every single one causes an explosion that will hurt you and make a lot of people hate you... choose wisely <3".

I return from the dead with a fic that isn't even for the Naruto fandom and I don't really have an explanation for myself.

Pairing: SamBucky Word count: 2317 Fandom: MCU Summary: Visiting Steve was always strange now that the guy was old and retired. Still, of all the things Sam expected out of today, witnessing a prime example of gay panic from the co-worker that's been mysteriously avoiding him was not one of them.

Honestly, the fact that Steve's house smelled like prunes was probably one of the funniest things that Sam had ever heard in his life. More than anything he would have loved to go back in time, to the days of reading about glorified heroes in history textbooks, and tell his fifteen year old self that Captain America, Steve Rogers, retired in a house that smelled like prunes. God, his best friend just had to throw himself in to being old the way he threw himself in to everything else.

"Is there a special reason for you visiting?" Steve's voice was more tremulous these days, less steady but no less warm. Just hearing him again after the shameful amount of weeks it had been since his last visit made Sam grin.

"Nah, just thought I'd pop in and see if you'd expired yet. Your birthday's coming up. Gonna be, what, three hundred? A thousand?"

Steve narrowed his eyes but there was fondness in them so it wasn't very scary even if he could probably still tackle Sam across the room if he wanted to. At this point it would hurt him too but he could do it. "You, young man, are-"

He looked chagrined at himself when Sam cut him off with a laugh.

"You shitting me? Did you really just call me young man? See if I ever let you live that down."

His friend grumbled but accepted the teasing as his due. That was just what he got for going back in time and doubling down on being so much older than his own best friends.

Since it had indeed been a little too long after they last saw each other there was quite a bit of catching up for them to do. Over cool glasses of sweet tea and a plate of cookies the two of them spent a pleasant couple of hours shooting the shit until Sam could almost forget the years that stretched between them now. It was jarring, sometimes, looking away from those clear blue eyes to realize all over again just how many wrinkles they were set in. Sometimes he hated it. Other times he could only smile to know that at least one of their ragtag bunch had found the peace they were looking for.

Eventually all that sweet tea went right to his bladder and Sam excused himself to use the bathroom. When he returned he took in the sight of his friend all snug under one of the blankets his late wife had knit and sighed, feeling maudlin suddenly for no good reason.

"I should probably get out of your hair," he said. "Let you get in your afternoon nap or whatever. No, stay there man, I'll clean up." His smile was easy as he snagged the dishes from their grazing and hauled it all over to the kitchen.

"You sure?" Steve's voice floated after him. "Nothing else you want to get off your chest?"

"Huh?"

Sam frowned at the cups he'd just placed in the sink, running back through his mind. They'd talked about pretty much everything he could think of.

"You didn't mention Buck once, you know. I thought the two of you were friends now."

"Ah. Yeah. So did I." The corners of his mouth twisted with a little bitterness, a little confusion. After everything they'd been through and the number of times Bucky had accepted his invitations down to Delacroix he'd thought they were well past the point of calling themselves friends. Maybe he himself felt something a little more than that but he knew better than to push.

That was probably why Bucky's sudden radio silence hurt so much though.

"Trouble in paradise?" Steve called from the other room and Sam snorted.

“Shit, I don’t know. One minute we’re fine and the next he just up and disappears on me again. I may or may not have checked a bunch of obituaries for your name just in case because I have no idea what I might have done to piss him off.” Sam pursed his lips. He’s already gone over all this with Sarah a half dozen times and in all the recounts he’d done of their last couple missions he still couldn’t find any particularly bad moment between him and his best friend. Unfortunately the sweet tea he was glaring at didn’t have any answers either so he snatched the pitcher up and moved to put it in the fridge.

“Have you tried, oh I don’t know, asking him what’s wrong?”

“You think I didn’t try that?”

Steve’s hum drifted down the hallway with a distinct note of sass. “Neither one of you is very famous for your communication.”

“Excuse you, I was a counselor. A certified veteran’s counselor. Communicating with people was literally my job until your overly buff ass came running around all ‘on your left’ and ‘everyone I know is trying to kill me’.” Sam huffed as he snapped the fridge closed. “I damn well tried to talk to him but he’s not answering my texts or my calls. Short of breaking in to his apartment I don’t really know what else you want me to do.”

Without any other excuses to keep him in the kitchen Sam heaved a sigh, knowing he couldn’t dawdle any longer. He could only get to the door by going though the living room so his choices were either run away out the back, which he would never ever hear the end of, or go back in to the living room and face Steve with his stupidly wise and knowing eyes. Seriously, let a guy live to almost two hundred and suddenly he thought he knew everything. Annoying was what it was.

He was only halfway down the hall when he heard the front door open. Sam very carefully swallowed down the jibe he’d just been about to deliver and hoped that meant what he thought it meant. Maybe Steve had finally gone vague after all and bailed in the middle of their conversation; he’d rather chase a crazy old coot down the street than talk about his feelings regarding one James Buchanan Barnes. Actually if he looked at it from the right angle then chasing an old coot down the street was pretty much his job description whenever he and his partner teamed up on missions. Sam was just glad they hadn’t been called in to one since this whole silent treatment had started because he wasn’t sure he wanted to know whether or not Bucky would still have his back even when the guy was mad at him over reasons unknown.

Two more steps and Sam froze in his tracks, eyes wide with disbelief. Bucky’s shoulders were hunched in to himself with something bridling on panic as he fit himself through the front door and kicked it shut behind himself, eyes wild and fixed on the ground between his feet, nervous energy pouring out of him in a way Sam hadn’t seen before. From his spot on the couch Steve watched his childhood friend let himself in with serene indifference.

“Didn’t know you’d be over today,” was all he said. Then he smiled benignly when Bucky let out a soft whine.

“Help,” Bucky pleaded. “I’m dying.”

Then Bucky slid down to his knees and face planted in the carpet, arms and legs splaying out wide. Steve hummed.

“You know,” he murmured, “no one ever believes me when I tell them you’re this dramatic.”

“Steve! I’m having a crisis!”

“I tell everyone you’re a drama queen and they just shake their heads at me.”

“This is important! You have to kill me, Steve. Or I’m gonna just- just-!” Bucky’s voice petered out with another extended whine muffled by the carpet that probably didn’t smell any better from that close up.

Crossing one leg over the other, Steve folded his hands in his lap with a great lack of concern for the ridiculous scene playing out before him. Sam remained frozen in the hallway, wondering if Bucky even realized he was there, but he got an answer to that almost faster than if he’d bothered to ask himself.

“What’s wrong, pal?”

“It’s Sam!” Bucky cried. His arms lifted up like wings to flail briefly before falling back to the floor in a boneless sprawl. “Please just crush my head or something. I can’t take this.”

“Ah, yes, I hear you’ve been avoiding him.”

Whatever kind of noise Bucky was trying to make, it came out sounding more like he was choking on carpet fumes. “Of course I’m avoiding him!”

“Now why on earth would you do that?”

“I want to stick my tongue in the gap between his teeth!” Bucky said, entirely unaware of the sparks that were suddenly running up Sam’s spine in the hallway. “Help me, Steve! I want to press my thumb in the little dimple on his back. He has a dimple on his back! Why!? Steve I want to hold his hand! What the fuck!”

Steve had both eyebrows up near his hairline and the most shit eating grin any human on the planet had ever worn when he turned his head to look at Sam. Frozen with his eyes on the figure currently panicking in to the floor, Sam paid him no attention. He was busy processing. After getting to know Bucky, inviting him to stay in Delacroix time and time again, the dramatics weren’t actually that much of a surprise. Obviously as they grew closer he’d gotten a number of glimpses in to who the real Bucky Barnes was under the grouchy veneer he presented to the world. Watching him starfish on the ground and whine wasn’t too far from what he’d already seen.

Hearing him say anything about his tongue in conjecture with Sam’s teeth, on the other hand, now that was a bit unexpected. More than a bit.

“I think Shuri called this ‘gay panic’ and honestly I’m in agreement,” Bucky went on mindlessly. “If I have to watch him go through one more workout and not grab his ass with both hands then I’m just going to rip both of them off. Who needs hands if I cannot grab Sam Wilson’s ass with them!?”

“You may be slightly exaggerating the situation, I feel,” Steve told him.

Bucky snorted. “I am not. I absolutely am not. Why is he so hot? And nice? I hate that. Except I don’t. Steve why is he so nice to me?”

“That might be a question you should ask him.”

“Oh yeah, sure, I’ve got lots of questions for him! Hey Sam, why are you nice to me? Hey Sam, can I lick your cheekbones? Hey Sam, how big is your cock?”

“Well. Not that I’ve ever thought to ask that myself but, alright. Go on, Sam, how big is it?”

Sam had just enough time to cross his arms over his chest and assume a very casual pose leaning against the wall beside him before Bucky’s head shot up off the carpet. If possible, his eyes were even more wild than before when he fixed them on Steve, full of the deepest betrayal. Then he very slowly dragged them sideways to see the man he’d just been panicking over. Sam gave him a very friendly smile.

“Depends on your frame of reference,” he admitted. “I’d say sizeable.”

“Nnnggggg.”

“Hi Buck.”

“Ggnnn.”

While Steve very poorly disguised a laugh behind one hand, Sam pushed off from the wall and sauntered further in to the living room. Bucky slammed his face back in to the carpet.

“Leave me here to die,” he pleaded in a very small voice. Sam tutted, reaching for the front door, only looking over his shoulder once he was halfway through it.

“Come on, Buck, can’t lick my cheekbones if you don’t get off the floor. It was a nice visit, Steve, but don’t be looking out your front curtains for a bit. I think I’ll let Bucky decide for himself what sizeable means.” He thanked god for the mercy of Steve’s house being situated out here so far from any other homes, surrounded on all sides by enough trees that you couldn’t see it from the road. A gorgeous little island of privacy. Sam was fairly sure he wasn’t the only one grateful for this, judging by the mad scrambling noises he could hear going on behind him.

Bucky’s voice garbled out something that sounded like ‘fuck you, thank you, bye forever’ and then Sam was listening to the slam of the front door barely a second before strong hands were wrapping themselves around his hips. He laughed even as Bucky’s face came in to view.

“Greatest assassin of several generations and you didn't notice my truck in the driveway?” he said.

“I may have been a bit distracted.” That was definitely a pout on Bucky’s lips.

“By being so hot for all of this”-Sam gestured vaguely down his own body-“that you literally ceased being able to function.”

He didn’t expect such easy agreement as the sheepish nod that followed his words. “Pretty much.”

Sam blinked slowly once, twice. For one long moment he considered teasing the man. Then he decided that their time was much better spent doing things they’d both obviously been wanting to do while assuming they would never get the chance.

“I was promised a tongue in my teeth. Are you gonna get to that any time soon or am I gonna sit here and pine some more for something I apparently could have had all along?”

Bucky keened piteously. Then he surged forward to follow through on his own promises and Sam really hoped that Steve had taken his words to heart about the curtains. The man was way too old to be seeing all the ways they were about to defile the side of this truck.

Okay so I rewatched parts of Endgame to write a Sambucky fic. I haven’t seen this movie since the theaters and then S8 ep 3 Game of Thrones destroyed my life.

-The fact that The Snap took Hawkeye’s entire family way outsides the odds proves how much the universe just hates Hawkeye.

-I forgot how much I fucking love Nebula. I want more Nebula and Rhodey. Bucky and Nebula would get on, too. Disabled superheroes club unite.

-I did like the beginning of Endgame. Everyone was just so wrecked and they played it so well. Thanos living his best life in his cottage. That was great.

-I still genuinely do not understand why Steve looks at Peggy’s picture when he’s talking about bringing everyone back from the Snap because he ‘doesn’t know what he’ll do otherwise.’ Like does she represent everyone he’s lost, like Sam and Bucky, his closest connections that are actually dead from the Snap? It doesn’t make sense.

-Is that Steve running a support group because he asked himself, “What would Sam do?”

-This was actually the best scene dealing w the fallout of the Snap. The MCU was definitely not ready to address the full scope of what The Blip means and you see that lack of follow through in every movie/series post Endgame.

-Steve Rogers: “You gotta move on.” UNLESS

-“...Thanos should’ve killed all of us.” I think this is the reason Steve goes back in time, honestly. The Snap just broke him. Without Sam and Bucky, with the enormity of this failure, Steve just lost his ability to cope. Steve has always needed someone to save him from himself but they’re gone. Even though they get most people back, they still lost Tony and Nat and 5 years. Steve can’t win. And Steve Rogers cannot cope with losing. So he rewrites a history where he wins. I don’t even think it’s about not being able to get over Peggy (though they did try to shoehorn that in hard), it was about Steve needing to be in control of his life again.

-It’s one of those situations where I can understand the character’s individual choice, but from a storytelling and narrative perspective, it doesn’t make sense with the story they were telling in the Captain America movies and it’s deeply unsatisfying and confusing. It leaves so many questions and potential consequences. I wasn’t even in this fandom at the time and had zero opinions on any ships, and I was like “this makes no sense.” It still doesn’t. But you know what good for Steggy shippers, ya’ll really won. Stucky fandom, as someone who had to watch Game of Thrones S8 wreck my fandom life, I feel you. My deepest sympathies.

Anyway I skipped to the end after the support group scene. Dammit here we go:

Had to watch the final battle. Cause I had to hear Sam say on your left.

I still lowkey ship Tony/Strange

What you don’t see in the finale battle is where Sam and Bucky keep saving each other. That happened.

The backflips they had to go through to explain why Carol Danvers doesn’t end this movie in 5 minutes. Lol

Tony Stark takes no prisoners. RIP coerced alien soldiers. I have a hard time believing they couldn’t have saved Tony between a portal to Wakanda and magic but fine heroic moving death it is.

Sam didn’t have to go that hard and put a hand on Bucky’s shoulder. But he did.

Okay the finale scene with Sam, Steve and Bucky. The whole reason I watched this lol. So it looks like they’re at the wreck of the Avengers compound. It’s unclear how much time passes between final battle, funeral, old man Steve and the stones. I still theorize Sam and Bucky get arrested after this because they’re fugitives and need to be pardoned.

It’s clear Steve told Bucky and fans were right about this for ages, but why not tell Sam??????? Like seriously wtf??? Couldn’t have said HEY Sam any interest in becoming the new Captain America??? 😂

That last look Steve shares with Bucky; right in my fucking heart.

So when Steve leaves he has no shield because it was destroyed by Thanos. When Steve comes back, he brings a shield to Sam. This seems to confirm the separate branch theory. The shield Sam has comes from a different timeline. Which means Steve came from a different timeline, maybe using the same tech. So it’s possible he rescued Bucky from HYDRA and he, Peggy and Bucky lived a great polyamorous life in that verse. Aw.

But that begs the question of how Steve got the shield in a different timeline. Like WHAT. Did he go find it in the Arctic? Did he convince Wakanda to make another one somehow? Like wtf? Again this ending makes no sense.

Poor Sam. He seriously has to deal with one last mindfuck, losing his best friend that he gave up everything for, and Sam being stalwart and true, just rolls with it. At least Bucky knew. Bucky had the chance to go back with Steve (but for a million reasons Bucky could never go back, that’s what this fic is going to be about lol). But Sam is just left to deal with one more loss.

Can we talk about how Bucky 100% supported Sam getting the shield from the start. Bucky was READY for Cap Sam Wilson. Bucky was like nope this shit is written.

You can see that imposter syndrome revving up to 1000% on Sam’s face. And he turns to Bucky for confirmation this is really happening.

I think this also explains why Bucky is so defensive about the shield. It really is the only thing left of his past. It’s his only tie to the Howling Commandos, to Steve, to the person he was before HYDRA took everything. And the only hope he has in staying behind is the certainty that Sam will be Cap, and that’s the hope that makes him stay. The thin vague tie to Sam and the possibility of their future. So for Sam to reject the shield, oof, I bet that felt like a rejection of Bucky himself. Because Bucky stays for Sam.

(None of this explains why Bucky then ghosts Sam. That is the biggest mystery but there are many delicious possibilities. It’s also possible that Bucky didn’t really ghost Sam - we know his flip phone is just something he has for show. He could be talking to Sam on his smart phone. And they had another falling out.)

Dear God the emotion in Sam’s face as he processes that he’s being given the shield. Cue existential crisis!!!!!

no problem! the mackie thing was a variety interview back in june that basically framed mackie as homophobic, after multiple questions about his stance on sambucky as a romantic relationship. it was wildly blown out of proportion by a shit ton of people that didn't read the actual article and listen to the interview, in which mackie actually criticises hollywood and fandom exploitation of gay relationships potential or otherwise (aka, queerbaiting).

people were quick to jump on the mackie hate bandwagon, but most evidently, a lot of white queers engaged in anti-blackness towards mackie on sites like twitter and tumblr. on this site alone, there are still a good lot of people that think mackie's homophobic, or make memes out of the whole "exploiting homosexuality" thing, or even actively post about sambucky with captions like "mackie this is for you" and such. and that whole situation made me really want to just stay in my brown queer lane AWAY from the whites in this fandom. bc a lot of them proved to me in that week that it is NOT worth it.

(also, a lot of these people are fucking annoying with how they treat sam. how the mcu fandom as a whole treats sam is heinous, but the way "sambucky" fans that are just masqueraded st-cky fans treat sam is specifically disturbing, and it is no shock to me that most of the people i encounter that are like that are white. so i prefer to drive people that see that part in my bio away rather than take any chances.)

5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you? fandom’s ruined virtually every paring for me in some wayfjfjfdljkff. the mcu (and merlin) fandom definitely made me realize im not as shippy a person as i thought i was lmao sooooo yeah. 

basically, the oversaturation of pairing content kinda put me off most pairings. im so tired of seeing characters not able to breathe without another being shoved into a post with them. like you rarely get purely sam content, you usually always have him + steve or him + bucky and it’s just...sigh. 

i’m definitely at a place now where i’m less fond of all my pairings – even otps – than i was before, so like this extends to merthur, frostiron, rhodeytony, sambucky, etc for that very reason. and to further confirm that, im just realizing the pairings i’m not tired of are the ones i just don’t see much of – or the ones that are canon – like argwen, pepperony for canon n like very rarepairs like mjshuri, samrhodey bc no one really talks abt them.

(so to counter that, i’ve unfollowed a lot of very shippy blogs n i also filtered out a lot of ship names so that they wouldn’t be all up in my face all the time unless i wanted to see them for myself)

Lady Danger - A few points to address here:

On Walker, they seem to have softened his stance from full on nationalist crazy. He’s still U.S Agent - read the wiki. We haven’t seen the last of him or Val.

On Sharon, never liked her character to begin with and in the comics, she has been brainwashed this entire time as a sleeper agent. She may be a villain now or is she a triple agent? Who knows but they left her story open for more.

Just because you don’t like where the MCU has taken certain characters (still grappling with Endgame!Steve) doesn’t make the entire universe suck. Look at DC and then get back to me 😉

Anon 5: Only the MCU knows why, but IMO I see people outside the fandom complaining about the series saying that the plot of the series sucks, nobody likes flagmashers, and the actress is bad. Her scene with Sam, Mackie acted around her, she almost missed the scene because she sucks. This causes people to lose interest in the series. Another is that there are many characters shouldn't be there, like Zemo. Flag plot is stupid, they say they don't have food and such and blame people's return. There is enough food in the world for people, but capitalists do not allow it. Blaming the capitalists, the powerful in the world, not the Avengers. Disney would never allow it! haha ha. I'm watching because of Sambucky and White Russel is a great actor, he makes it interesting.

Lady Danger - They must be watching a different show and I don’t follow people who’ve said any of those things so 🤷🏻‍♀️. Wyatt has shown himself to be a great actor and lots of great SamBucky moments!
