i feel like all the benrey discourse is missing the point that scorpy went in, was silly, and left. that was benrey. that was the benrey experience. any attempt to understand benrey would require understanding the sick, twisted psychological labyrinth of scorpy's mind. i dont even think the hand gaslighting was intentional i just think scorpy actually zoned out for the entirety of hlvrai and went into a trance that made him roleplay as a mean gay guy.

so banana fish has this scene which obviously stuck out to me (that’s his adoptive father)

the focus is not on the opera itself, but the name of the composer. is the name amadeo/amadeus a reference to something else? the only thing i can think of is like… the relationship between mozart and salieri? the film amadeus came out in 1984, 1 year before bananafish began in 1985 (idk when these panels were drawn but i estimate around 1986-1990). but 1985 is the same year the vampire lestat was published, the book in which armand reveals his name was amadeo and provides most of the initial detail about his relationship with marius.

i feel like i’m missing some cultural information on why anne rice and akimi yoshida are making similar comparisons at similar times. i know wolfgang amadeus mozart was big in pop culture at the time, and maybe yoshida was just referencing salieri trying to destroy mozart out of jealousy, but the portrayal of “amadeo/amadeus” as a teenage sex worker in an unbalanced and harmful relationship with his wealthy and all-powerful adoptive father (who saw him as already “damaged” due to his history of abuse and then turns him into a literal killing machine) seems REALLY specific and completely unrelated to mozart.

it’s possible it’s totally a random parallel, and a throwaway scene, but given the timeline i feel like it’s also possible yoshida read the vampire lestat and is referencing the character armand.

thoughts? just a coincidence? is there something im not considering or does my timeline not add up?

a gentle reminder to myself: slow down when you're met with someone else's creation. just because it's not in a museum, doesn't mean it's not worth your time. you can skim through your life all you want, you can jump over the annoying cracks and never look back, but when someone presents you (in the most literal meaning of this word – as a gift) with their art you should sit down and pay back with attention. people need creativity that is shared and appreciated, and it needs your focus and care to bloom properly. briefness kills both the idea and the community around it. so, slow down.

I’ve probably posted this before, but it always feels so strange when canon Subspace simply calls his Biografts “my invention.” Simply invention. It genuinely feels so disconnecting to me, for some reason.

They were my creation. I was their creator. It was not ‘creator’ and ‘invention.’ It was a mutual ‘creator’ and ‘creation.’ Inventing is one thing to me, but the act of making something real and creating it is another.

And it’s so very interesting to me how even though I called them creation and how invention seems so distant, most Zeta units I made I did not care for in the slightest. The only ones I cared for were Z and A. Yet deep down I still think I had some form of attachment, hence why I addressed them differently.
