Verkaufe - Stockholmer Gesamtausgabe der Werke von Thomas Mann - Der Memoiren erster Teil: Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull. Erschienen 1955 im S. Fischer Verlag. Es ist das erste Buch der Reihe mit 442 Seiten. Das Buch ist in einem akzeptablen Zustand, die Seiten sowie das Buch selbst sind aber sauber und sehr gut lesbar. Akzeptabel aber deshalb, da sich im ganzen Buch, sowie auf den ersten zwei Innenseiten handschriftliche Eintragungen und unterstrichene Textstellen, sowie Randnotizen befinden. Ich muss dich vorerst enttäuschen, ich schreibe meine Memoiren aktuell selber. Wofür soll dieser Blog denn sonst gut sein?

Zu deiner Frage: du gehst auf "Thilo Wagner's Larp Kalender", eine Website in originaler 90er Optik, suchst dir da was in deiner Nähe raus was halbwegs interessant klingt und off you go. Du wirst dir entweder Tickets kaufen müssen, oder dich irgendwo anmelden, hängt von der Orga dahinter ab. Wenn du dir irgendwo unsicher ist kannst du den Orga-Leuten meistens einfach eine Email schreiben, man wird dir weiterhelfen. Das Problem ist: dir wird niemand irgendwo in diesem Prozess erklären wie Larp so wirklich funktioniert, bis du tatsächlich irgendwo auf einem Larp auftauchst und es selbst mitbekommst. Bisschen nervenaufreibend, aber das ist es wert.

Hey! Tbh apart from rumours, the only source I have about this topic is Kiharu Nakamura's biography. The word "Mizuage" isn't in the book, but there's an entire chapter dedicated to "deflowering" (literally). So I guess it's about Mizuage? For a chronological placement - this happened in the 1930's, in Tokyo-Shinbashi. Not some shady brothel district. According to Kiharu's Okasan: for becoming a famous Geisha, it is important who you were deflowered by. Only a minister or a major industrial comes into question. That guy might even become a sponsor in future! And if he doesn't, at least the respective Geisha could boast with "this important guy deflowered me". Kiharu talks about that one day, she attended an Ozashiki, where a specific minister with "a grotesque face, as old as my own grandfather" attended. The guy who was willing to do the deed. After some time, he vanished and she was called into a backroom of the Ochaya by the housekeeper of her Okiya. The minister waited there, the housekeeper wished "well then... have fun" and vanished. According to Kiharu, she was able to coax the minister into leaving her in peace. It also reads like Kiharu had passed Hangyoku stage at that point and was free of debt, so I doubt it has any meaning of "this girl has passed an important step in her training". So, yeah. Vor knapp einer Stunde ist die Sonne aufgegangen, ... ich meine Regius Luopa, sorry. Ich zerbreche mir schon die ganze Zeit den Kopf darüber, wie es jetzt weitergeht. Bisher konnte ich kein Wasser finden und ich traue mich nicht, einfach das nächstbeste Gestrüpp in den Mund zu nehmen, um zu sehen ob es essbar ist. Ich bin ziemlich am Ar***. Letzte Nacht war so eiskalt, mir wären echt fast die Zehen abgefroren. Und diese ganzen Albträume! Ich hoffe wirklich, ich muss nicht auf diesem beschissenen Planeten versauern. Sollte ich je meine Memoiren schreiben, ich werde sie "Am Ar*** der Galaxis" nennen. Warte Mal ... was ist das?!

... ich glaube, ich hab grade Glück. Aber ich weiß nicht, ob ich das so sicher sagen kann.

Dort in der Ferne ... da ist eine Rauchsäule. Das könnte das Frack meines yP sein.

Also, ich würde ziehmlich viel Zeit verlieren und es könnte sogar gefährlich dort sein. Oder mir passiert irgendwas auf dem Weg dorthin. Ich weiß ja nicht mal, ob das wirklich mein Frack ist.

Andererseits könnte ich vielleicht Vorräte, oder zumindest irgendwas brauchbares dort finden. Oder sogar Mitglieder meiner Crew. Und vielleicht wäre das ein toller Ort, um die nächste Nacht dort zu verbringen.

The sun came up almost an hour ago, ... I mean Regius Luopa, sorry. I've been scratching my head the whole time about how to proceed now. So far I haven't been able to find any potable water and I don't dare just put the nearest weed in my mouth to see if it's edible. I'm in a pretty stupid position. It was so cold last night I almost froze my toes off. And all those nightmares! I really hope I don't have to die on this shitty planet. If I ever write my memoir, I'll call it "The Ass of the Galaxy". Wait a minute... what's that?!

... I think I'm lucky right now. But I don't know if I can say that for sure.

There in the distance...there's a column of smoke. This could be my yP's tailcoat.

Should I go there and have a look?

Well, I would lose quite a lot of time and it might even be dangerous there. Or something will happen to me on the way there. I don't even know if that's really my tailcoat.

On the other hand, I might be able to find supplies, or at least something useful there. Or even members of my crew. And maybe that would be a great place to spend the next night.

Diese Frage gilt es für die drei zu lösen. bei ihren Ermittlungsarbeiten sind die unheimlichsten Situationen zu überstehen und Peter kommt nach einer entscheidenden Entdeckung in große Gefahr ...

Katte, my beloved! Now this is right within my comfort zone!

The Katte Incident features in most (probably all?) biographies about Frederick, but it's usually a rather short summary and there are some common mistakes (it noticeably doesn't feature in the audio guide tour at Sanssouci which i am still mad about).

The memoirs of Frederick's sister Wilhelmine (Memoiren der Markgräfin Wilhelmine von Bayreuth on Gutenberg) are a fun read and give insight as to how she perceived the whole thing. She does get a few things wrong because she wrote everything down over ten years later and was not present for everything (common mistakes that are often repeated in bios and documentaries include "Frederick sent the letter to the wrong Katte by accident" (that one is in one of my old posts too i think... gotta fix that) - he didn't, he told Katte's cousin about the plan on purpose - and "Katte was executed right in front of his window" - while FW I did order this, he was probably "just" lead past the window and executed down the road), but overall it's worth a read. The sometimes quoted "they behaved like an indiscrete lover and his mistress" line is from Pöllnitz's book on prussian rulers, however, Pöllnitz was even further away from things than Wilhelmine at the time and also made a living selling gossip, so I'd take his account with a whole spoon of salt - though I do hear the original French is good to actually get a grasp on the gossipy side of things.

Parts of the trial files were printed in 1936 in "Hinrichs, Carl: Der Kronprinzenprozess. Friedrich und Katte". The year 1936 of course leads to a moment of unease in regards to german historical literature, but this one is fine as far as I can tell - it's really just a compilation of sources without much interpretation going on and it's easier than going to the archive to check out the files in person. Apart from the trial files it also includes Katte's last letters to his family and friend and accounts of the execution. Very useful overall, should be somewhere on the web.

This one is not to be confused with "Ahnert, Rainer: Friedrich und Katte. Der Kronprinzenprozess" from the early 80s. It's based on the first one, but it writes an explanation of the events around excerpts from the sources. An easy read, but a little iffy source wise (Katte suddenly has "a terrible beard" in Wilhelmine's memoirs...?). Then there's "Merten, Detlef: Der Katte-Prozeß" which is about the legal side of things and which I haven't read yet.

The best books on the subject to date are definitely the ones by Jürgen Kloosterhuis: "Kloosterhuis, Jürgen: Katte. Ordre und Kriegsartikel" and "Kloosterhuis, Jürgen und Lothar Lambacher (Hgg.): Kriegsgericht in Köpenick! Kronprinz, Katte, Königswort", the latter of which is the catalogue of an exhibition on the topic from 2011 - repeats quite a bit from the first book, but ads a ton of new things. Kloosterhuis is very meticulous about his sources and was able to work with stuff from the Katte Family Archive (living my dream...), so the historical side of things is great. However, Kloosterhuis is also ice cold at times, so the emotional side of things is not really his strong suit (i.e. "Well, ordering to execute him in front of his son's window was the only way to go, really. Katte's family got over it and Frederick forgot about him by January and wasn't really impacted by the whole thing." I really hate that "He forgot about poor Katte by January"-line, you find that multiple times in bios and I think it's incredibly stupid). Ordre und Kriegsartikel also includes printed sources, for example lists of the belongings of those incarcerated over the course of the trial (sadly not Katte's, that list was lost in WW2; we just get a list of precious stuff found at his place that might belong to Fritz) and the best short biography for Katte out of any of these (in which it becomes increasingly obvious that this man was as much of a mess as the Crown Prince).

Other than that, there's a metric ton of more or less fictionalized retellings of the whole thing, the most important being that by Theodor Fontane (ja, der von Effie Briest) in his Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg (Havelland for Katte's home village of Wust and Oderland for the Küstrin section of things; both links are for Gutenberg and should lead directly to the chapters in question). Fontane really likes Katte; Havelland includes a completely fictional one shot of Katte's father returning from the war to spend some quality time with his son in the family crypt and Oderland includes the phrase "Er ist der Held" iirc.

TL;DR: Kloosterhuis. Just get Kloosterhuis.
