Spuffy Appreciation Week - Day Three - Favorite Quote(s) So, this is more like a whole scene worth of quotes. Oh well! =P But, I just love this whole scene between Buffy and Spike. The dialogue here is just really amazing. I’ve talked a lot about the softer, lighter, and more emotional side of their relationship that shows up later in the series as a whole. So today I thought I’d show some love and appreciation for the harsher, darker side of their relationship as well. This scene and these quotes have been talked to death though, so I wanted to try and approach them in a different way to make things more interesting. So, I thought I’d give the Japanese version of the scene a listen and boy was it fascinating! I’ve done some posts here and there on the Japanese version of Buffy, but this time I decided to step up my game and provide video as well as my own translations of the Japanese. Usually the Japanese sticks fairly close to the English, but this time there were a lot of small subtle changes found in the Japanese that were quite intriguing. (Apologies for the video ending a bit abruptly, it goes directly into them fighting, so it was hard to cut it off nicely.)

Here are my notes on some of the Japanese used here and my translation of it: (Found under the Read More due to length.)

- Spike says that Buffy’s blood is umai, which can mean “delicious, tasty, appetizing, and etc.,” but also “skillful, clever, splendid, fortunate, and promising.” Umai is more often used by men in Japan, rather than oishii, especially for Spike’s super masculine speech patterns. However, if they wanted Spike to just be talking about Buffy (and her blood) on a purely food level or purely to any type of physical attraction, then oishii would have been more fitting. The fact that he uses umai likely is meant to indicate that he has a level of appreciation for Buffy’s skills as well.

- He also refers to Buffy as a wakai onna, which is a “young woman,” though rudely. Usually onna (woman) and otoko (man) have no hito (person) attached to them to come off as less rude. Girl is onna no ko (with ko meaning “child”) and in the Japanese subtitles, they actually use musume, which means girl and fits more with the image that the English gives of making Buffy seem younger (while the Japanese gives the sense of her being older/more like an adult than a child). - In the English, Buffy specifically asks, “Do we really need weapons for this?” But in the Japanese, Buffy specifically asks if Spike’s weapon is necessary (for him). She says anta no buki or “your weapon.” She also refers to Spike using anta, which is a rude way of saying “you” in Japanese. - Spike, in response, replies “I just like them. They make me feel all manly.” in English. However, in the Japanese he literally states that he is just holding the weapon. Then he says kono sama ni naru kara na, which can translate to what I picked of “Makes me look good,” but could also just as easily have been translated to “Makes my look complete,” which is very interesting to me. The Japanese gives an added layer, this early on in the series, that Spike creates a persona to some extent.

- The Japanese doesn’t even bother with trying to translate doilies and just has Spike say that he messed up the room, haha. He also “apologizes” by saying warukatta, which is the past tense of warui, which means “bad.” It translates quite easily to “My bad.” That type of apology is way too informal for Spike to be using with Buffy, someone he doesn’t know well and for a situation that requires a stronger apology than that. So the Japanese itself and Spike’s VA’s delivery of the line quickly and easily indicates that Spike isn’t really sorry at all - it’s a flippant apology. - Next we have Spike’s last few lines. In English: “As a personal favor from me to you I'll make it quick. It won't hurt a bit.” In Japanese: Sono dokyou ni menshite tokubetsu atsukai da. Sugu ni sumu kara, sukoshi itakunai ze. or “On account of your bravery, I’ll give you a special service. It’ll be quick. Won’t even hurt a bit.” I listened to this sentence a ton of times because I wanted to make sure that I heard the first part correctly, since it is quite different from the English. Spike says sono dokyou ni menshite, which means something like “being faced with that bravery (courage, pluck, nerve, etc.),” this is interesting because there is a level of talking down going on here. 

This is furthered by the fact that Spike refers to Buffy as omae during this whole scene, a term which means you, and is very masculine and often times rude. But at the same time, Spike’s words also indicate that Spike is impressed and admiring her bravery, thus leading to him offering his tokubetsu (special) atsukai (treatment, service), which is (supposedly) a quick and painless death. The English specifically mentions how Spike will make it quick, but the Japanese grammar makes no such specific indication. Rather it is just focused on the fact that it will be quick and painless.

- Finally, I have Buffy saying “No chance!” here as opposed to the simple “Wrong” answer that Buffy gives in the English version because the Japanese used is a more powerful way of saying that something is unacceptable or wrong than just plain “no.”  So yes, this was immensely fun and the Japanese made me look at these quotes and the scene from a different perspective that I never have before. :)  Credit: Buffyworld for the English transcript/quotes.
