Successors - Chapter Three - In Ruta's Shadow

The Champion’s Festival. 

The rest of Hyrule might share a similar day of remembrance for the Calamity’s casualties, Horano did not know, but this one was strictly Zora. 

It was to honor the sacrifice of Princess Mipha, who surrendered her long life to a set of Hylians that had not done any grand endeavors to win her favor. 

Princess Zelda and Prince Link, they were dear friends of her lovely Mipha. But the elders had already turned against them. Stripped Link of his title, even. They were still angry about Mipha’s death, but Horano assumed they held a grudge against the gentle Wolfbred.

After all, he did reject Mipha’s marriage proposal. 

But in the Hylian prince’s defense, he was already engaged to another. It was only fair to Zelda, who may have even been with child by that time. Horano did not know whether the golden little woman was expecting at the time Mipha proposed to Link, but that changed nothing. Link was already engaged to her, and had he been in love with Mipha instead, he wouldn’t have said yes. 

Neither of them deserved the elder’s punishment, which involved “forgetting” to remember that Link was the Prince of Hyrule and Zelda’s husband. Not even Rhoam tried to make the world forget his daughter was married. 

No doubt the elders would work to change Hylian history in the minds of future Zora youth, but that would not work on her: the shadow of the Divine Beast Vah Ruta, inactivated in the Rutala Dam’s waters, reminded her of the truth. 

Horano truly believed that Mipha’s death was not a malicious act by either Link or Zelda, but rather a tragedy that was accounted for when Mipha accepted their plea. She was not a selfish soul, after all. While it did not lessen Horano’s mourning, especially on this special day, it was important to remember alongside. 

Zora were beginning to gather at Mipha’s newly-finished statue. She wondered why they did not gather at Vah Ruta. Later today, she decided, she would visit the place where her princess fell. As she went to pick up the Lightscale Trident, she stumbled upon the small Prince Sidon. “Oh, my prince. Are you alright?”

His young eyes looked up at her. “I miss Mipha…”

“I do too… we all do.” 

“Why did she go?”

“Because Hylia needed her…”

“Will Hylia need me?” His voice was so vulnerable. 

“I don’t know, Sidon… but maybe. You’re the future of the Domain, if by some reason the Royal Family survived, Hylia will likely need you to help the kingdom.” 

“Will I see Mipha again after?”

“Maybe. Only Hylia knows.” She braced his back. “But today, let’s celebrate your sister, how about that?”

Although the entire domain made an appearance at their late Champion’s statue, she was the only soul sitting in Ruta’s shadow. The quiet fit the somber mood, but she also wished someone had come. 

After all, what better way to remember a late Champion than by spending time at their Divine Beast?    

“Excuse me?”

Horano’s attention flipped to a tall woman standing at the entrance. At first glance, the woman’s clothing made her seem like a Hylian, but striking red hair and a muscled body revealed her to be a middle-aged Gerudo. She had been a confident soldier, it seemed, but she no longer had that Gerudo fury. "Yes, ma'am?"

"Would it be alright if I came and sat by Vah Ruta? I didn't know if it was Zora-only or not."

"You're welcome to sit here. It would be lovely." 

"Thank you, kind Zora." The Gerudo came and sat beside her, looking up at Vah Ruta. 

“If you don’t mind me asking, who are you?”

“My name is Esosu. Former Captain of the Gerudo Palace Guard.”

“You’re from Gerudo Town?”

“I used to be.”

Horano blinked in confusion. “Used to?”

“I fled when Chief Akeku succeeded Lady Urbosa. She rules the Gerudo with an iron fist, forcing them to abandon Hylia and Hyrule. I now live in Hateno Village, been there about a year.” 

“Ah! We share something in common. Our elders are trying to force us to forget that Champion Link was married to Princess Zelda and Prince of Hyrule. They are angry at him for refusing her marriage proposal and then taking her to that fateful battle.” 

“It’s sad enough that my people have turned against Hyrule. But the Zora have been long-term allies with them…”

“The King is still in favor of Hyrule, it is just some of our elders that are not.” 

“Ah!” Esosu nodded in some relief. “What is your name?”

“I’m Horano. I’m a guard for the Zora Palace.” 

“A small world!” Esosu declared with a few claps. 

“Indeed.” They looked back up and the elephantine mechanical beast that rested noiselessly in the reservoir. “Do the Gerudo visit Naboris?”

“Not that I am aware of. We tried to find it right after Lady Urbosa fell, but couldn’t find it in the blowing sand. I left shortly afterwards; I don't know if they ever found Naboris.” 

“How is the late prince’s family doing?”

Esosu startled a little at the sudden subject change, but promptly responded. “They still hurt. I don’t know if his father will ever heal… He didn’t lose just his son, but his son, his daughter-in-law, and their baby. I believe it was too much loss for his old heart. The Duchess will be alright, but I don’t think she’ll ever move on. Even a year afterwards, she still pulls me aside to show me something new that reminded her of her brother. The whole village still grieves, he was beloved by all of them.” 

"Ah," Horano sighed sadly. "I hope her father will soon find peace, and that she will heal enough to live. She's got so much life ahead of her, it all will be wasted if she can't move on from her past… when her brother was alive…"

Literally these people from Gaza have made an account on Tumblr and is writing in english to communicate what they need and you all are coming onto my blog or on the tag and not reblogging their posts. We have people both Palestinian and non Palestinian vetting the fundraisers! I mean more the reblogs, more the chance of the fundraisers gaining momemtum, the more there would be a chance of a donation. Please donate if you can and reblog!!! and follow them if it is possible.

@/mohammedayesh has posted about getting leaflets, telling them to evacuate Rafah. They are very low on funds. Go follow them and reblog their posts and donate if possible.

We have @/haneenatya too whose mother is suffering from eye stroke and need to evacuate. Please I have been following them for some days and it doesn't seem their own posts are getting much attention.

Do you guys notice how when Shawn Fain, president of the United Auto Workers union, started planning a general strike, he did it by a) targeting his messaging towards unions with the ability to safely and effectively strike in large numbers, b) laid out a clear, actionable plan for those unions to follow (setting contracts to all expire at the same time, since many unions cannot strike while under contract), c) is using union contracts to set clear, actionable demands that can be met in order to gauge success and provide an end goal, and d) started organizing FOUR YEARS before the proposed strike date to give people the chance to plan accordingly, because it takes a really freaking long time to get tens of millions of people organized?

You notice how he didn't do it by slapping a message on Twitter saying 'hey nobody go to work on Monday, that'll really show 'em'?

the thing is there's like, a point of oversaturation for everything, and it's why so many things get dropped after a few minutes. and we act like millennials or gen z kids "have short attention spans" but... that's not quite it. it's more like - we did like it. you just ruined it.

capitalism sees product A having moderate success, and then everything has to come out with their "own version" of product A (which is often exactly the same). and they dump extreme amounts of money and environmental waste into each horrible simulacrum they trot out each season.

now it's not just tiktokkers making videos; it's that instagram and even fucking tumblr both think you want live feeds and video-first programming. and it helps them, because videos are easier to sneak native ads into. the books coming out all have to have 78 buzzwords in them for SEO, or otherwise they don't get published. they are making a live-action remake of moana. i haven't googled it, but there's probably another marvel or starwars something coming out, no matter when you're reading this post.

and we are like "hi, this clone of project A completely misses the point of the original. it is soulless and colorless and miserable." and the company nods and says "yes totally. here is a different clone, but special." and we look at clone 2 and we say "nope, this one is still flat and bad, y'all" and they're like "no, totally, we hear you," and then they make another clone but this time it's, like, a joyless prequel. and by the time they've successfully rolled out "clone 89", the market is incredibly oversaturated, and the consumer is blamed because the company isn't turning a profit.

and like - take even something digital like the tumblr "live streaming" function i just mentioned. that has to take up server space and some amount of carbon footprint; just so this brokenass blue hellsite can roll out a feature that literally none of its userbase actually wants. the thing that's the kicker here: even something that doesn't have a physical production plant still impacts the environment.

and it all just feels like it's rolling out of control because like, you watch companies pour hundreds of thousands of dollars into a remake of a remake of something nobody wants anymore and you're like, not able to afford eggs anymore. and you tell the company that really what you want is a good story about survival and they say "okay so you mean a YA white protagonist has some kind of 'spicy' love triangle" and you're like - hey man i think you're misunderstanding the point of storytelling but they've already printed 76 versions of "city of blood and magic" and "queen of diamond rule" and spent literally millions of dollars on the movie "Candy Crush Killer: Coming to Eat You".

it's like being stuck in a room with a clown that keeps telling the same joke over and over but it's worse every time. and that would be fine but he keeps fucking charging you 6.99. and you keep being like "no, i know it made me laugh the first time, but that's because it was different and new" and the clown is just aggressively sitting there saying "well! plenty of people like my jokes! the reason you're bored of this is because maybe there's something wrong with you!"

Successors - Chapter Eleven - A Way to Rewind Time

 *Ten Years Later* 

 ~~~

“Oh, Symin! It’s finally ready for testing! After all these years!” An elderly Sheikah woman, who clearly had been beautiful in her prime, called out in child-like excitement. “Think of the possibilities should this work!” 

The remaining survivors of the Calamity had reached ages where even the more longed lived races could no longer serve their kingdom. Her wonderful experiment, whom she’d toiled over for the better part of seventy years, was nearly complete. The ability to rewind biological clocks… It hurt her how something so disruptive and damaging must come into being in order to finally bring peace to all and let healing finally begin. Her aged body grabbed an exact replica of the Slate which Zelda had sealed away with Link. 

His progress had been slow, yet steady. She could see the young king’s vitals just fine, but she wondered… would he be back in time? Would she, her body worn ragged by almost one hundred and thirty years, still be here when he did return?

She could feel Zelda’s struggle and agony in the last time they met up on Mount Lanayru. She was in so much pain… It was truly a miracle that Zelda still held on. 

She knows he’ll make it back to her… all the agony she’s experiencing, it's not just for Hyrule you know. Even more than Hyrule… the fight’s for the baby. Her little princess… She fights through her agony every day just so she’ll get to meet her daddy.  

Those words of Impa’s rang through her head whenever doubts about Link crept back. 

Zelda knew he would make it. Zelda knew he would come before it was too late and undo it all.

All of the continual suffering at least. The lives lost on that night were never coming back; there was no magic undo for the Champions, Link’s family, the Royal Guard, King Rhoam or any of the other thousands of lives who were extinguished. 

Whether she was here or with Hylia when he came was of no consequence. This was just an added measure to help Her Majesty. 

The replica Slate pinged on the Guidance Stone. 

The rune was installed. 

“Let’s do this, Symin! Can I get a click and a snap?!”

With a snap of his own, Symin booted the rune and directed its rays at Purah’s body. Only slightly longer than a few seconds had passed before adverse reactions developed and Purah fell unconscious. There would be time for analytics later.

After an entire day’s sleep, Purah’s full-body fatigue was only slightly less than extreme.

“Symin! What’s this young lady doing here?” Where there once was balding, there was now floor-length hair; and smooth skin replaced deep wrinkles. “I-it’s me! The age-reversal has already taken effect! Quick, let's determine just how many years I’ve regained!” 

She quickly noticed, after a few calls of his name, that Symin was still asleep. Instantly, she went to kick him upright to document this scientific achievement. Everything that the lab could test was tested, and the results startled.

Purah was now in her early fifties. Over seventy years overnight. She had rewinded her life more than her body had currently lived. After a morning of accomplishment, concern set in that she would find herself as a newborn the next morning.

Thankfully, the rate of rewind had slowed greatly. The next morning, she met a version of herself she hadn’t seen in about ninety years. She was thirty again. She had rewound all the age her body had received since continuing her research following the Calamity… There was so much loss that happened in that time, to see that self again was overwhelming. 

She’d had a Gerudo assistant and Link’s late sister Sydnei the last time she lived in this body. Esosu had passed long ago, and though Sydnei’s funeral was only about two years ago, it still sealed the fact that this body was not supposed to be seen again. 

The first thing to do with this newfound energy was not to mourn, oh no, but to science! 

There was so much science to use this energy on, energy she hadn’t had in decades. She quickly decided on the Sheikah Sensor, who had an expansion done when she was eighty.

All the Slate Tech would go directly to the coming hero, onto the Slate he inherited from his wifey. All the work would be worth it if said tech helped him free Princess Zelda.

People who knew the truth were dying. The Queen was once again just a princess. She was trapped in the past just like Purah now was.

The next day she was twenty. Exactly a century ago. This body witnessed the Calamity, smelled the blood and felt the ashes. 

Maybe Ganon was stronger then than he had been ten thousand years before. Or maybe he was expecting us to do what we did…

Regardless, the blood spilled on that night… there was so much. It was unrestrained in its might and reach, merciless to the screams of innocents that had never so much as laid a hand on him.

There were no words that ever existed who could describe the complete destruction of the Great Calamity.

The Champions were lost, the Castle and its inhabitants were lost, Zelda herself was lost… 

But one hope was recovered. The body of young Prince Link was recovered one hundred years ago from the plains surrounding Fort Hateno. 

His wounds and blood loss were extensive. The chance of him making it through the night was nothing, as his breathing and heart were stopped.

He was so young, so courageous, his death racked her even now. He was the youngest ever Imperial Guard, one of the first Liberated Wolfbreds, eventually he became the Matriarch’s Personal Guard; but all these things just led up to his greatest accomplishment as Princess Zelda’s beloved. There was no enemy that would frighten him away from defending his pregnant wife and the kingdom they set to share.

And that courage cost him everything.

He had everything on paper to defeat Ganon gloriously, but his efforts collapsed into tragedy.

The Sheikah Researchers and the Royal Family have been closely bound since ancient times, and the devastating loss hurt them just as much as it hurt the family he left behind.

Shortly before his passing, a chamber known as the Shrine of Resurrection was discovered on the Great Plateau on a cliff overlooking the kingdom and Temple of Time. 

It had never been tested… there was no guarantee. 

But it was the only chance at saving his life.

It was all they could do. 

Purah’s age continued to regress over the course of two days, finally stopping at the age of six. Her ability to wait patiently was gone. She wanted Link back  now . She wanted to jump on and kick him until he woke up. But Symin wouldn’t assist her, so she turned her time to developing a way to undo the process. It was finished within a day, but the Guidance Stone and its blue flame had flickered out. 

Attempts to restore them failed, and Purah was stuck waiting. Research was halted, and her days were now limited to sunlight and gas lamps. In only a few days, Purah’s entire life had managed to be uprooted. 

She expected that’s what happens when you force nature to do your bidding..

At least now she knows a little more about how the princess has felt these past one hundred years.

Except what clouds her mind and prevents her from fully acknowledging this learning was that she’d disabled her support of the Royal Family through trying to help save it…

And that now the years of research she’d prepared for Link to use was unreachable.

She’d blown his second chance before it had even begun.

John Epler on Emmrich: "I mean honestly, I will say, like, we expected a great reaction to Emmrich. Went beyond what we expected for sure. But it’s been fascinating to see, because again, Emmrich is this character, he’s more of the professorial, more, he brings a wisdom and kind of a calmness to the group, so even when things are at their worst, there’s that one person in the group who is kinda like, ‘okay, y’know, we've got, let's figure it out, let’s take a deep breath’. And just his journey through his character arc, and his interactions with the others, it’s been fantastic to see. Even just finding opportunities for him to bounce off the other characters, you know, the way he talks to Bellara, the way he talks to Neve, it’s all so different, but it’s also just, again, based around this core of this warm, kind-hearted, professorial necromancer. Which, again, is not something you see a lot of in media. I mean, usually, necromancers are depicted in a very specific way. But it’s been, it's awesome to see how Emmrich has grown and just, really one of the most, one of my favorite experiences has been just working with Emmrich’s writer, working with Emmrich as a character." A question was asked - "From your companion's perspective, which previous companion would you romance?" Zach kind of has a thing for The Iron Bull, saying "oh that awakened something inside of me". He also likes Dorian. Jessica was too overwhelmed to answer. Nick was also overwhelmed by the question, but thinks Solas is sexy [source] [source]

Ali fangirled over Lucanis and Emmrich [source], prefers Emmrich [source]

A question was asked - "Is DA:TV and DA:I streamlined together?" [paraphrased]. Answer: DA games are not as streamlined as Mass Effect and act almost as standalones [source]

The cast were asked about which aspect of their character is their favorite. Ali loves the little quirks about Harding. "Lucanis is a good cook!?" ** Neve is very dry and pretty closed off about it. For Emmrich, it's the "exploration of the idea of death and necromancy" [source] (** FINALLY CITATION for this? :D)

A question was asked: "How do you decide to introduce the lore in each game?" BioWare answered that it depends as they build each game. They always know the base lore, and see opportunities through game mechanics and characters. They try not to infodump [source]

A question was asked: "Any favorite party banter?" Ashley Barlow said to listen for "hand to bone combat" [source]

The game takes place approximately 10 years after the end of DA:I. You start the game hunting for Solas. The game is built on some core principles: be who you want to be in a world worth saving and with characters that matter. The companions are always at the heart of DA and they are at the heart of this game too. [source]

The moderator asked John Epler about what is bringing this party of people ("this rogues' gallery") together. John: "I mean, it's the end of the world, and each character that you bring into your party understands that the world is ending, that they need to stop that, and you're really building, what I would say is, more of a found family. These are characters who may not start off liking each other, may not even start off liking you, but over time they grow to understand the importance of what they're doing and just, how critical it is to stop the elven gods" [source]

If you're worried about the riots right now and are concerned for your safety, the safety of friends and loved ones or the safety of other members of your local community, here are a few posts, organisations and social medias that may help. Feel free to add any others that you know of in the notes.

Organisations:

Exit Hate: Helping people and their family to walk away from extremism.

Stop Hate UK: 24 hour hate-crime reporting hotline

Migrant Voice: A charity that helps migrants advocate for themselves.

Refugee Action: Helps refugees to rebuild their lives.

North East Anarchist Group: Some information regarding locations of planned far-right riots on their social media, as well information regarding the location of counter protests in the north east of England.

Green and Black Cross: A "grassroots activist legal support group". They offer "know your rights" training courses, as well as information on your rights as a protester and interacting with the police and staying safe. Find them on instagram as well under @gbclegal.

Netpol: Or, the Network for Police Monitoring. A good organisation to look into regarding protest rights and legal resources.

Migrants Organise: Provides a platform for migrants to organise. Offers advice and support, as well as access to grassroots organising, research, advocacy and campaigning.

The Anthony Walker Foundation: Local anti-hate group in Merseyside.

Social Medias:

It's worth checking your town/local area's social media pages (if they exist) for information regarding possible planned riots and destruction. There may also be one or more pages regarding news in your county/constituency.

Additional social media pages:

@ukisnotinnocent on Instagram. A group "mobilising against fascism" across the UK, providing updates on the riots as well as information on the locations of planned violence and staying safe while counter protesting. CW: There are some shocking videos and images on here which depict some of the violent scenes seen lately.

@monitoringgroupne_n on Instagram. A group that shares updates, information and concerns regarding the policing and fascism in the North and North East of England. Including sharing information on the location of planned riots, some information on counter protests and staying safe while protesting.

@standuptoracismuk on Instagram. A good resource for riot times and locations, as well as counter protest times, locations, information and footage.

@ukfactcheckpolitics on Instagram. A page dedicated to "exposing government corruption". Great for quick news and updates regarding both riots and counter protests. Like @ukisnotinnocent, they do share videos and images as well, the contents of which can be shocking.

Also, I've noticed that a lot of groups protesting the ongoing genocide in gaza have been very vocally against the far-right riots and have been sharing some information alongside their usual stuff. If you know of a local encampment/group, it's worth searching for their social media.

It's worth checking the lists of people that the listed groups follow on social media as well for more information regarding riots across the country.
