LIMIT ONE VINYL RECORD PER BUYER
For a limited time you can get the widely-praised debut album Complexion by Tunic from our sister label Self Sabotage Records for only $8 on vinyl, that’s a savings over 5 dollars! (Also available in CD).
“After releasing several DIY singles and playing a range of gigs in unusual locations like disused prisons, Winnipeg noise punk trio Tunic are releasing their debut album, Complexion. The album is great, making the listener sit up and pay attention to its 11 tracks of rage and fury. In terms of their noise rock countrymen, the band sound like a faster METZ or a less metallic KEN mode.” (Echoes and Dust)

Listen | METZ announce new album with 'Entwined (Street Light Buzz)’ and '99'
METZ has just dropped the news about their anticipated new album “Up On Gravity Hill”, accompanied by not one, but two tempestuous singles – ‘Entwined (Street Light Buzz)’ and ’99’. ’99’, is a dynamic and energetic and pulsing composition. While ‘Entwined (Street Light Buzz)’, showcases the Canadian trio’s swerving guitar sound with a discernible rhythm. “These two songs couldn’t be more…

I've watched the Robespierre part in Le serin du major (1982) and I need you all to see Jean-Paul Farré as Robespierre because he is GREAT, it makes me sad he wasn't cast in a bigger/more interesting movie as Robespierre (I do have to find Joséphine ou la comédie des ambitions, where he also plays Robespierre).
He's a short, physically unimpressive man but his first seconds on screen, when he won't talk or look at the man talking to him and just stares at the birds, are very unerving.
He's friendly but also aloof and sharp?
HIS VOICE, oh my supreme being, his voice is perfect given what we know of Robespierre's? It's high-pitched and slightly grating, but it grows on you in the few minutes he's on screen? His delivery is also interesting, fast-paced but very careful and deliberate.
The way he can't stop playing with the birds or looking at them? (but he should be gentler about it, especially with the cage's door)
His face shape and green-brown eyes also work very well?
This movie (set in 1786 in Metz) is very much pre-Revolution in spirit and they choose to include Robespierre and present him in a positive light? This is so good.
Also I'm convinced he's wearing Negroni's coat from La Terreur et la Vertu (1964) and also possibly his black hair/wig band? In any case his outfit is very Negroni-inspired.
The "major" breaking the fourth wall at the beginning and telling us "it's Monsieur de Robespierre!!" is very cute and funny.

Every Record I Own - Day 792: Magma Üdü Wüdü
Back in 2009, my old band These Arms Are Snakes embarked on what would wind up being our final tour. The first leg of the trip consisted of five shows across Western Canada with METZ before dropping down into the states to do a loop around the US. It was our first time playing in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. I was particularly excited for Winnipeg (a sentence rarely uttered by anyone, I imagine) just because it seemed like such a remote outpost deep in the prairies of North America.
The Winnipeg show was at a venue called the Royal Albert Arms Hotel. I knew nothing of the venue beforehand, but the moment we rolled up, I knew we were someplace with a deep history. The venue was in the bar of an old hotel in the city center, on some street that looped off the main grid. I would describe the vibe of the block as "gritty." The bar was old and musty but the stage and PA looked decent. A bunch of old haggard drunks were ponied up at the bar. We started loading in, and as if on cue, the bar turned off whatever nondescript FM radio rock that had been playing and switched to some strange, dissonant, prog rock.
The drunks quickly finished their drinks and cleared out. The prog rock song continued on as we began setting up our gear. There were King Crimson-like guitar leads. Goblin-like synthesizers. Doomy riffs that sounded like something Neurosis would have seized upon when they evolved out of their crust punk years. Strange vocals that sounded like Mike Patton buried somewhere deep in the mix. And it just kept going and going. The tempo built into a frenzy. The rhythm section ramped up like Bill Buford and Chris Squire on a combination of bad acid and cheap speed.
I finally had to hop off stage and run up to the promoter to ask what was playing. He smiled and told me it was "De Futura" by the French "Zeuhl" band Magma. Apparently, he played it on the jukebox whenever bands loaded in because it chased all the day-drunks away. He burned me a CDR copy of the full album, Üdü Wüdü, and handed it off to me at the end of the night.
The show remains a highlight in our time as a band. Local noise rockers KEN Mode opened the show. I don't really remember if the turnout was great or if we played particularly well, but I remember the whole evening being charged with a dangerous energy. At the same time, everyone at the show was so warm and welcoming.
After the show, the promoter offered to take us on a tour of the hotel, which had once been a popular spot for traveling businessmen before the Great Depression. But after the stock market crash, the hotel became a by-the-hour haven for prostitutes and drug addicts. The hotel hit its nadir with a grizzly murder case involving a resident beheading, castrating, and dismembering a male lover during a drunken blackout. Much like the Dahmer apartment building, the crime was so gruesome that the building was faced with the possibility of being condemned, until a philanthropist bought the hotel and sought to preserve it as a historical landmark. It had to remain a functional hotel though, so the nightly rates were raised to an absurd cost, ensuring that the rooms would remain vacant.
The promoter took us up to room 309---the location of the murder. The room was in total disrepair. The tub where the pieces of the corpse had been stacked was stained with the rusty brownish-red color of dried blood. Later that night, as the bands drove away from the venue, a man with a fresh stab wound jumped in front of METZ's van and begged for a ride. The whole evening was draped with the aura of violence.
But we escaped Winnipeg unscathed, and Üdü Wüdü became the soundtrack for the remainder of the tour. Even now when I listen to it fourteen years later, it has this duality of delirious excitement and sinister intention.
It sounds like cheating death and reveling in madness.

Battle of the bands?? How about instead of groups of the IM you could ad groups of bands of many fandoms like for example a band made from the teens version of the kids of Little Nightmares (Six, Raincoat Girl, Seven, Mono, Low and Alone) it's just an idea if you the battle of the bands arc
While I really appreciate the idea (and don’t get me wrong a Little Nightmares Band sounds sick AF) I think I wanna stray away from a cross over in this AU (in general I’m not too much of a fan of crossovers, tho apparently I like my Little Nightmares AU just fine. Idk why but its cool and cute).
I am debating maybe doing Finley and Sammy or the Warners? But maybe more as friendly competition and they get along just fine.
Or I should pick a band of villains. That would fit better with a more hateful competition between bands. Idk 🤷🏻
Thanks for the idea Metz! (does Metz work?? TwT)

3, 5, 13, 19, 30 for the music ask meme?
TY! This was a fun one and didn't go how I thought it would. It also made me realize that I like a lot of bands that stylize their name by using all caps.
3: A song that reminds you of summertime
Jungle Boogie -Kool & The Gang
(reminds of me of a summer in the late 90's that I spent hanging out with the coolest chick and she played the Pulp Fiction soundtrack every time we drove somewhere)
5: A song that needs to be played LOUD
Headache - METZ
(pretty much all METZ should be played loud as fuck)
13: One of your favorite 80’s songs
Never Tear us Apart -INXS
(it's so dramaaaatic. was formative for my concept of romance and romantic love as a kid)
19: A song that makes you think about life
The Cuckoo -HEM
(makes me think of life in terms of how long anyone is ever on this planet)
30: A song that reminds you of yourself
She Don’t Use Jelly -The Flaming Lips
(I am nothing if not an absolutely messy weirdo who does nothing conventionally. but for the record, Vaseline on toast sounds horrible)

Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real Cut Loose at Webster Hall on Saturday Night
Tumblr media
Lukas Nelson – Webster Hall – November 18, 2023
It’s been a few years since Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real last visited Webster Hall and what feels like a lifetime of world tumult, happenings and music that’s passed since then. That the songs from the band’s crisp 2023 release, Sticks & Stones, sound like people eager to break out and boogie is probably not an accident, but then Nelson and his snappy country-rock squad have always walked the line between wistful-moving and barroom-blastoff — better than most. They’re love-me-tender when they want to be, with a joyful, almost goofy earnestness. They can deliver sad songs that hit the feels. And they can rock your face off.
Tumblr media
There’s a lot of Nelson’s dad, Willie, and a lot of occasional employer Neil Young, and a little of other obvious touchstones like Tom Petty in what they do, but these days POTR sound most like one of the best live bands of the past decade, never leaving behind their party-hardy roots, keeping the rock part of folk-rock firmly in mind, writing better and better songs that adequately pace a lip smackingly fun show. On Saturday they once again got after it, nailing the newer tunes and finding new excitement in the old ones. Opener “Entirely Different Stars” began mysterious, got to a crowd-stoking boogie and ended with a psychedelic guitar breakdown. “Sticks and Stones” had double-barreled piano and plenty of saloon in it to push the song forward. Nelson was rocking so hard during the fist-pumping “Four Letter Word” that his signature hat flew off. The early POTR favorite “All the Pretty Horses” underscored just how far the band’s come in their command of their own dynamics, starting quietly solo, patiently building to a full-band sound that filled up the room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Those were just part of the action. The tunes that at this point might be called the POTR classics — including stinging-sweet “Forget About Georgia,” groovy “Find Yourself,” country-gospel “Set Me Down on a Cloud” — all delivered, as they always do. But the band went deeper still, especially Nelson himself, who delivered a good chunk of the set solo, near-solo and acoustic, either guitar or piano, and left the room spellbound with the sentimental “Smile,” the proud “Just Outside of Austin” and the achingly beautiful parent-to-child-benediction “Giving You Away,” shimmering with steel from multi-instrumentalist Logan Metz. There were surprises, too: The brilliant NYC-based soulful R&B singer Emily King joined Nelson to duet on what was described as a new song, loaded with New York-centric lyrics.  As ever Nelson and the POTR band — Metz, Corey McCormick, Anthony LoGerfo, Tato Melgar, aces, all — brought things to a blowout finale, barreling through the hilarious “Wrong House,” a nifty segue from their own galloping “Ladder of Love” into Willie’s “Bloody Mary Morning” and then “Find Yourself” to close the set. It was as full and varied a show as POTR have ever played here. We wrote of this same band at this same venue in 2019 that they’d “earned their swagger.” In 2023, they totally own it. —Chad Berndtson | @Cberndtson

Adulkt Life – There Is No Desire (JABS/Our Voltage)
Second album for this Male Bonding-meets-Huggy Bear tussle and I think this one edges it. 2020’s Book of Curses was refreshing for its launch into a Gravity-welled pseudo Antioch Arrow echo pile of riffs, but There Is No Desire, launched by a flotilla of friendos, puts big riffs front and center (and they are big BIG riffs, some of John Webb’s biggest, at least of what I’ve heard, and hope he hasn’t been holding out on us all this time) and Chris Rowley’s lyrics-that-sound-like-the-collages-he-makes-look delivery feel like the safety in all of this for once. They definitely rubbed off some of that time spent with METZ in this new set, at least in terms of the volume war going on within, and the push-pull that gives more space for Sonny Barrett’s poly-rhythmic-roly drumming to sit up top (the action in the second half of “Blackout” is real excitement). Wow, if only we could ever hear this band live, right? Also kinda glad this band slowed down the pace and let these big boys loose up front. Record sounds balanced, not one of those things where a band unloads all sorts of chaos and closes on a slow, contemplative bit. Diggin’ it, even with that lyric about McDonald’s fries in “4’33””. Don’t fuck with a truly legendary product. (Doug Mosurock)

January 2023: 1 of 12 mixtapes connecting the music of my childhood (Tamil pop) and the music that influenced me (sinophone indie) to the music of my new home (The Netherlands). This month: Ilaiyaraaja to Space Fruity Records, via Charlotte Adigéry and boba dream pop.
Tumblr media
Track-by-track notes: 1. Ilaiyaraaja - Raaja Rajathi (1988) (from 'Agni Natchathiram') This song - from a 1988 Mani Ratnam film - was a childhood favourite, and maybe even seeded my future love for minimal post-punk?
2. 昏鴉 The Murky Crows - 我們如此超群絕倫怎能居於世俗所見 (2015) One of the first Taiwanese bands I adored, and my introduction to the branch of twee sinophone indie that would define my life between 2015 and 2020. 3. Ilaiyaraaja - Vikram Vikram (1986) I only discovered this classic thanks to the recent remake of the cult 80s Kamal Hasan spy film Vikram, but I was familiar with the writer Sujatha, whose works were serialized in magazines like Kumutham. My literary magazine of choice between ages 7 and 13 was Gokulam, where I submitted many terrible sci-fi short stories that were thankfully never published. Does anyone remember the Undir family stories? 4. Stereolab - Metronomic Underground (1996) Stereolab was the first band that got me into live bootlegs, rarities, B-sides, and "sessions" recordings, now a standard part of how I consume music. 5. METZ - Wet Blanket (2012) METZ was the first band I did a tour poster for! 6. Charlotte Adigery and Bolis Pupul - Ceci N'est Pas un Cliche (2022) Belgian duo. The best, most joyous, and most exciting concert I saw in the Netherlands since moving to Amsterdam in 2022. 7. Gino Cochise - Fo Woa (2022) Amsterdam hip-hop artist. The artist I most want to see live in the Netherlands in 2023. 8. Chaar Diwaari - Kaun Mera? (2022) I get excited by an average of 1 (one) Indian hip-hop song every year. This was the one for 2022. 9. Naujawanan Baidar - Khyber Sound (from Kabul to Peshawar in Fullmoon) (2020) From an incredible album of anti-imperialist Afghan-rooted experimental music, from the now Netherlands-based N.R. Safi. 10. bed - WET (2022) I saw bed play at the back of the Foo Concepts milk tea shop in Rotterdam, the crowd sipping boba and swaying to dream pop. A perfect gig. Normalize milk tea at shows! Normalize shows at milk tea shops!
11. Ts Bayandalai - 灰色公马 (2020) Seeing Bayandalai play live was always a transcendent experience, and this is the album that makes me miss Beijing the most.
