We are hitting peak bird migration season in the United States with hundreds of millions of birds making their way north this weekend. Artificial light can be extremely confusing and disorienting for these birds as they migrate! Please make sure to “go dark” and turn off any unnecessary lights around your home. Your avian neighbors are counting on you to help them on this perilous journey. Lights out this weekend!
Bird migration forecast map is from BirdCast, where you can find more information and live updates.

So tumblr has started putting this little banner at the top of posts from new accounts, and honestly I kinda dig it. I've seen a lot of people get absolutely eviscerated for doing something that was perfectly normal on their previous platform but a huge faux pas here, and I think this little banner will go a long way to mitigating that.
Editing to add: DO NOT BE SHITTY TO PEOPLE WITH THIS BANNER I SWEAR TO GOD IF THEY'RE TRYING TO BE NICE YOU BE NICE BACK OR SO HELP ME

A very welcome visitor that I only get to see during migration times - the White-throated Sparrow, one of the native sparrow species of America. There are several passing through in spring and fall, and I always love watching them. They scratch the floor for food just like the Juncos.

A New Study Reveals Migration Isn’t a Solo Affair—It’s the Social Event of the Season
Migrants face myriad challenges. That's why certain songbird species choose to travel (and possibly even work) together, according to research drawing on a trove of bird banding records. In a pioneering study published last week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers discovered that songbirds socialize across species lines, forming “migrating communities” as they travel. While ornithologists previously believed migrant species like the American Redstart and Magnolia Warbler just happened to end up flying near one another, we now know that this closeness is no coincidence:  It’s a sign that different bird species can form ecologically meaningful relationships and may even help each other out along their migratory journeys...

Oregonians: Lights Out Oregon starts tonight! It’s peak migration season for the next month, and millions of birds will be flying by night. Bright lights disorient them, draw them into cities, and increase the number of window strike deaths. If you have any overnight lighting, please consider turning it off! You can also call local businesses if you see lighted buildings overnight, to inform them of the risk.
Other people: Your city, county, state, or other region may have a similar initiative with slightly different timing or specific recommendations. Look it up!

The sounds of a wood full of migrating warblers as well as some other birds like a vireo. For those who never have or who may never get to be in a spot like this during spring migration.

Songbirds socialize on the wing during migration, new study says
The night sky teems with migrating songbirds, aloft in their millions following routes etched in evolutionary time. But those flight paths may not be entirely innate, according to new research led by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Evidence from over 18,300 hours of recorded flight calls suggests songbirds may “talk” to other species as they migrate, forming social connections and — just maybe — exchanging information about the journey. “We can’t be sure what they’re saying, but birds might broadcast calls during flight to signal their species, age, and sex. And we can certainly speculate that these flight calls could relate to navigation or finding suitable stopover habitat,” said lead study author Benjamin Van Doren...

Some more spring migrants from the bottom of a brush pile. An immature White-throated Sparrow (the white bib is not perfectly bright yet), a White-crowned Sparrow and an out-of-focus Brown Thrasher, added because I see them so rarely.
