Showdown 2k24 Nominations!
alright, redoing this post now that I can give a concrete start date of Monday the 15th of January!
Nominations for the tournament are open up until the start date, and you can submit anyone who could reasonable be considered a companion, either by sending me an ask or by filling out
this form.
If you make your nomination via the form you can also submit some propaganda to go alongside the poll. Anyone who was considered a regular at any point in the last year will automatically be included, as well as anyone who was in the original tournament (+/- a couple I might miss or misremember as being a regular because I don't have old lists anywhere). The exception to this is last years winner, Rose Tyler, she will not be getting a place in the main tournament, however after the final I will run a poll to see if our new winner can beat her. (oh and also maybe I'll leave the TARDIS out but not fully decided yet)
The tournament is going to be run in the same way I did @adventure-showdown, meaning I'll keep companions from different periods of the show and different mediums segregated at first so the nicher ones don't immediately get knocked out, and slowly get mingled together. The exact details are going to depend on just how may characters get included.
Errm yeah, so go wild, nominate whoever you like (as long as they are a companion). If they are from teh TV show they have to be on this list to qualify, and for EU companions I'm going with them needing a TARDIS wiki page, and also I will give them a quick proof read to make sure they pass, the bar is low but it is there
if you want to submit an alternate version of the character sorry but main version only unless you can give a really good reason, eg regenerations of a time lord
also, if they are primarily from another franchise that'll be a no
The full list of contestents is under the cut and will be updated as nominations come in. Its sorted by medium and then to be alphabetical by first name. if an eu companion exists in multiple mediums i just sort of picked one or I put them under the other category, people who exist in real life are also sorted into their own category. There are some characters under Classic Who/NuWho who were not companions on TV but were in the EU. Companions who's names are in green have had propaganda submitted for them, if they're not in green then they don't, and just because someone has propaganda doesn't mean i wont accept more

Tell me the most CHARACTER DEFINING episodes of Doctor Who... For EVERY COMPANION. 1963 - 2024.
Tumblr media
OK, so I worry this list will not satisfy you. It's been over a decade since I've done a full Doctor Who watch through, so there's a lot of companions I haven't seen in a long time. Some of these choices, as a result, will be a bit vibes based.
I was going to do some justification write-up on some, but I'm looking at a list of like 60 names (and that's after I omitted the 10th Doctor Specials companions since they're all only one episode). Feel free to ask me about any specific choices.
This will be TV Companions (counting plot-important Webisodes as TV, but most of those are just regular TV companions anyway), but I do reserve the right to have an audio adventure as the chosen episode (in one case, it's a Companion Chronicle). I am also including spin-off shows.
List under the cut
Susan Foreman - The Dalek Invasion of Earth (Maybe The Empire of Death if the theories are right, lol) Barbara Wright - The Romans Ian Chesterton - The Daleks Vicki Pallister - The Rescue Steven Taylor - The Celestial Toymaker Katarina - The Daleks' Master Plan Sara Kingdom - The Daleks' Master Plan Dodo Chaplet - The Gunfighters Polly - The Power of the Daleks Ben Jackson - The War Machines Jamie McCrimmon - The Mind Robber Victoria Waterfield - The Tomb of the Cybermen Zoe Heriot - The Mind Robber Liz Shaw - Inferno Jo Grant - The Death of the Doctor Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart - Spearhead from Space Sergeant John Benton - Invasion of the Dinosaurs Captain Mike Yates - The Dæmons Sarah Jane Smith - The Monster of Peladon Harry Sullivan - The Ark in Space Leela - The Talons of Weng-Chiang K9 - School Reunion Romana I - The Androids of Tara Romana II - Destiny of the Daleks Adric - Earthshock Nyssa - Castrovalva Tegan Jovanka - Time-Flight Vislor Turlough - Planet of Fire Kamelion - The King's Demons Peri Brown - Peri and the Piscon Paradox Mel Bush - The One Doctor Ace - A Death in the Family Grace Holloway - Doctor Who: The Movie (Mentioned in Night of the Doctor counts, so...) Charley Pollard - The Chimes of Midnight C'rizz - Creed of the Kromon Lucie Bleedin' Miller - Lucie Miller Tamsin Drew - Situation Vacant Molly "Dark Eyes" O'Sullivan - Dark Eyes 1 Rose Tyler - Journey's End Adam Mitchell - The Long Game Mickey Smith - The Age of Steel Donna Noble - The Fires of Pompeii Martha Jones - Last of the Time Lords Captain Jack Harkness - Captain Jack Harkness Wilfred Mott - The End of Time Amy Pond - The Beast Below Rory Williams - Dinosaurs on a Spaceship River Song - The Husbands of River Song Craig Owens - Closing Time Clara Oswald - The Magician's Apprentice Nardole - The Doctor Falls Bill Potts - World Enough and Time Missy - The Doctor Falls Graham O'Brien - The Woman Who Fell to Earth Ryan Sinclair - Spyfall Yasmin Khan - Survivors of the Flux Dan Lewis - Legend of the Sea Devils Ruby Sunday - 73 Yards (So Far)
This list is probably bad

Mini-Tournaments Contestent Lists
Green is for definite inclusion
Red is for maybes (opinions on if they should be included are welcome)
I am not familiar with EU companions, so if any of them should be included, please tell me (note, numbers are capped at 16 per tournament, EU companions won't be added if it would mean removing TV companions). They'll be listed in green as definite inclusions until the list is too long, companions in red will be removed first
Also, I'm writing these lists off the top of my head, so if I've forgotten someone obvious, let me know

So who in totals travelled with the doctor? I know we saw donna, but what other companions are there?
This is gonna be a big one, so *Takes a deep breath* In his first incarnation, the First Doctor started his travels with his granddaughter Susan, accidentally taking her school teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright. Along his travels, people would come and go, including Vicki Pallister, Steven Taylor, Katarina, Sara Kingdom, Oliver Harper, Dodo Chaplet, Ben Jackson and Polly Wright.
In his second incarnation, the Second Doctor would continue his travels with Ben and Polly, taking on Jamie McCrimmon, who would stick with him through his life. Along the way, The Doctor would also travel with Victoria Waterfield and Zoe Heriot. It was during this time that The Doctor would also meet Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, who would become an important figure during his most of his lives.
In exile is his third incarnation, the Third Doctor was forced to work with the Brigadier as UNIT's scientific advisor. Working initially with Liz Shaw, Mike Yates and John Benton, he would finally be able to travel again, first with Jo Grant, and later Sarah-Jane Smith.
In his fourth incarnation, continuing to travel with Sarah-Jane Smith and joined by Harry Sullivan, the Fourth Doctor would go on to travel with Naomi Cross, Leela of the Sevateem, Margaret Hopwood, two models of the robot dog K9, "Anne Kelso", Romana in two of her incarnations and Adric.
In his fifth incarnation, The Doctor continued travelling with Adric and took on Nyssa of Trakken and Tegan Jovanka, who he had met towards the end of his previous incarnation. Along the way, he would also travel with Marc, Thomas Brewster, Hannah Bartholomew, Vislor Turlough, Peri Brown and Erimem.
Still travelling with Peri in his sixth incarnation, The Doctor would travel with others including Frobisher, Evelyn Smythe, Charlotte Pollard (retroactively under the guise of Mila due to already travelling with his Eighth Incarnation), Flip Jackson, Constance Clarke, Melanie Bush and Hebe Harrison.
Continuing to travel with Mel in his seventh Incarnation, the Doctor would go on to be joined by Ace McShane, Bernice Summerfield, Hex Schofield, Sally Morgan, Lysandra Aristedes, Mags, Raine Creevy, Elizabeth Klein, Will Arrowsmith, Chris Cwej and Roz Forrester, though ultimately ended up travelling on his home.
The Eighth Doctor would find himself starting afresh, briefly meeting Grace Holloway and Chang Lee, before going on to travel with Izzy Sinclair, Fitz Kreiner, Charlotte Pollard, C'rizz, Mary Shelley, Lucie Miller, Tamsin Drew, Molly O'Sullivan, Liv Chenka, Helen Sinclair, Tania Bell, Andy Davidson and Bliss.
The War Doctor would go on to make a point of travelling alone, never taking on a travelling companion during his life.
Though he would continue travelling alone for much of his life, the Ninth Doctor would finally yield and take on Rose Tyler as a companion, and later Adam Mitchell, Captain Jack Harkness and Tara Mishra
In his tenth incarnation, The Doctor would continue travelling with Rose, though would later go on to travel with Mickey Smith, Martha Jones, a returning Captain Jack, Donna Noble, Gabby Gonzalez, Cindy Wu, Anya Kingdom and Mark Seven.
The Eleventh Doctor would start his travels with Amy Pond, going on to take on Rory Williams, Alice Obiefune, John Jones, ARC, The Squire, Abslom Daak, The Sapling, Valerie Lockwood and Clara Oswald.
Clara Oswald would continue to travel with the Twelfth Doctor, who would go on to travel with Hattie Munroe, Nardole and Bill Potts.
In her Thirteenth Incarnation, the Doctor would spend her entire incarnation travelling Yasmin Khan, being joined by Ryan Sinclair, Graham O'Brien and Dan Lewis.
Throughout many of their lives, The Doctor would constantly meet River Song, though on many occasions would be forced to forget their encounters to preserve the web of time.
And with that, I'm taking a nap - Dev~

Tears for Fears - The Hurting (Steven Wilson 5.1/Atmos/Instrumental) Blu-Ray Audio
Slightly over a year after the first Blu-Ray audio disc in the "SDE Surround Series", said series circles back to the band that began it all.
Tumblr media
Steven Wilson (renowned musician and engineer) wasn't involved yet when Universal (helped by Paul Sinclair and Steve Hammonds) compiled the 30th anniversary box set of The Hurting in 2013. Looking back, it almost appears modest. None of the tracks were previously unreleased, although many were on CD for the first time, and the concert video In My Mind's Eye made its first official DVD appearance.
The High Fidelity Pure Audio initiative started in 2012, and in early 2014, The Hurting was released in this format, but only in stereo. This disc is one of many good examples why the BD-A format never really took off: It was seen as pointless by most music buyers.
As Songs from the Big Chair was a bigger album, Universal then brought Steven Wilson on board to create a new stereo and 5.1 mix. Both were included on a DVD-A within the box set, but also on a standalone Blu-ray Audio - a much more attractive release than the Hurting BD-A. Nevertheless, the format fell out of favor. Blu-ray Audio continued to exist (both standalone and in box sets like Steven Wilson's 5.1 of The Seeds of Love), but the series was over after 2016. Until Paul Sinclair brought it back from the dead with the exclusive The Tipping Point Blu-ray.
That release, it turned out, was just the beginning of a series. Follow-up Blu-ray discs have been made of albums by xPropaganda, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Shakespear's Sister, Brian Eno, Orbital, Ten Years After and most recently none other than Bob Dylan!
Now for the 40th anniversary of The Hurting, Steven Wilson created not just a 5.1 mix but also a Dolby Atmos one (which will also be listenable on streaming sites, but the other mixes are exclusive to this disc), as well as an instrumental mix of the whole album!
Another find is two bonus tracks - versions of "Mad World" and "Watch Me Bleed" from the aborted Mike Howlett sessions (the original b-side mixes of "Ideas as Opiates" and "We are Broken", which were erroneously missing from the 2013 box set, are absent, though).
Tumblr media
So we're getting four different versions of the album:
Dolby Atmos
DTS-HD 5.1
Original stereo mix (apparently/hopefully a new remaster)
Instrumental mix (hi-res stereo)
Plus two bonus tracks (stereo):
Mad World (Mike Howlett Version)
Watch Me Bleed (Mike Howlett Version)
The exclusivity and various tax/customs shenanigans haven't gotten any better since last year for me, but at least the offering appears quite a bit more generous than The Tipping Point. Still, I'm definitely glad none of the other SDE Blu-ray discs were anything I needed to have. (If I lived in the UK, I probably would've gotten more of them.)
As with the second pressing of the Tipping Point blu-ray, the number of copies of this disc is going to be pressed based on how many are preordered until March 17.
There's also a new half-speed mastered vinyl reissue of the album.

Ghost Rider and More
My guest this week is comedian Mike O'Sullivan! Who was the first Spider-Man on TV? Where did Spider-Woman get her start? How many people have played Superman? Does anyone like crowd work clips? What happened when they rebooted Ghost Rider? Who is Danny Ketch? What is Midnight Sons? What issue of Ghost Rider freaked Brett out? Who is Cosmic Ghost Rider? What do we like about Ghost Rider? Did you think you'd become a millionaire by buying number one issues of comics? What was the New Universe? What comic book is Brett holding onto because he thinks it will be valuable? What's a change they made when they adapted Spider-Man for the movies? Have we hit superhero movie fatigue? Who was in the West Coast Avengers? What Spider-Man titles were there in the 80s? What's the deal with the Kraven the Hunter movie? Why are fan trailers annoying?
