I love Shakeshaft’s work. There is something quite blisteringly candid about his work despite how painterly some of these photographs are. Martin Shakeshaft documented the Strike throughout its duration, and the struggle of communities in solidarity against increasingly severe repression by a government that was determined to pursue its plan to de-industrialise the economy and dismantle trade unions.

On 6th March, the N.C.B announced that Cortonwood Colliery would be shut down with 20 other mining pits to follow suit. This would result in the loss of 20,000 jobs. It was intended for the closures to extend to 75 pits despite the N.C.B claiming otherwise. The N.C.B’s justification for the closures was to rationalise government subsidisation of industry.

In response to this unexpected announcement, the workers at Cortonwood staged a walk-out. The N.U.M, headed by Arthur Scargill, announced a national strike on 12th March, despite holding no national ballot, and at its peak roughly 142,000-165,000 miners were striking.

Keep in mind that the total workforce of miners in Britain numbered roughly 187,000. At a time when redundancy was rampant in Britain, with 3.2 million unemployed by the end of 1984, the prospect of it for any working class man was an affront to him and his family’s existence. For miners and their wives who played a massive part in the organisation and essence of the strike, the closures were not just a threat to their livelihoods but also their heritage, communities, and histories.
