And yes! That past post did make it sound like he was just made up on the spot lol, but the real Shyf Cian appeared in The Bridge of Bones as Edric (the new Commander)’s lackey! (He was more evil in the books, though, while in this Tumblrverse he’s just an annoying HR guy lol.) 

Basically, in the Bridge of Bones, the old Commander died, named shady outsider Edric as the new Commander, and the Order split into two: the faction of Shepherds who adamantly believed that the Commander planned to choose Blade as his successor and was loyal to the old ways, and the faction who either didn’t care, were neutral, or actively helped Edric establish his new reign in exchange for more power or status. (This would have been a great time for Riel to be around, since outsmarting his opponents and sabotaging people politically was his jam, but he had defected and left the Order by this point, so the team had to struggle on without him.) 

Anyway, Edric--who was pretty much a genius in his own right--needed a way to weed out the loyalists, the people who felt that the Order stood for its old ways and didn’t want to bow completely to his command. But he couldn’t mass-fire them all and didn’t really know who exactly stood for what. So he installed two lieutenants to help him whip the Order in shape: Miha Mikin, who replaced Shery and was in charge of spying on officers or taking note of seditious activity, and Shyf Cian, who was in charge of making sure all Shepherds adhered strictly to the new guidelines and rules of the Order--and if they didn’t, they would be written up immediately or fired. So he was essentially an insufferable tattletale as well as rule-monger! 

At one point the team was deployed to deal with a demon attack/possession in a small village, and after the ordeal was taken care of and they were headed back to Haven, Trouble wanted to stop in order to help an unrelated caravan that had broken down in the middle of a bad area (a dangerous and demon-infested forest). Shyf demanded that they stick to protocol, which was to only act in the service of an assigned mission; he insisted that the caravan didn’t have anything to do with their assignment and refused to let the group stop, under threat of pay cuts. Trouble responded by hauling him off his horse and punching him out cold, but he still got fired and put in Shepherd jail lmao (as did Arainia... both of them got put in jail multiple times in that book. Blade was so mad that they couldn’t keep their cool lol... good times). Eventually Trouble, Chase, Halek, Ayla, and Arainia got fired by Shyf, while Blade, Red, Shery, Tallys, and others managed to do everything right and stay under the radar to work on things from the inside. 

Anyway, later on the group decided that they were doing everything wrong, and that to take down Edric, they needed to turn one of the people in his faction against him, while making themselves the more obvious enemies. This lead to Red and Blade asking Lavinet (who had been more neutral and self-preserving) to change sides and turn against Edric. The climax of the book ended with Chase killing Vaughn (the other antagonist and Edric’s cousin), Shery poisoning Miha Mikin, and Lavinet subduing and arresting Edric (along with some other stuff: serial killer, evil Changeling, etc...). 

With his boss and general cohort taken down in one swift move, Shyf--I think--slipped away quietly in the night and left the Order! 

So he could, theoretically, return another day, though I don’t know why he would lmao!

She was born under the sign of the Twins, and while she's always ready to act and ready to joke, she's neither neat nor nice.

Her traits are Aristocratic, Unlucky, Extravagant, Ambitious, and Handy.

Mikin is 'the handsome one' in the family, or would be if he didn't have that haircut. He dreams of making a Fortune, and becoming a Merchant Prince; if he had his way, he could support his whole family in comfort. He was born under the sign of the Fish; he's very active and nice, but much more serious than his siblings. Unfortunately, the family madness has touched him, too- he's prone to wild mood swings and fits of feverish feeling.

His traits are Loves the Heat, Angler, Unstable, Coward, and Over-Emotional.

Tyto, at the moment, just wants to Grow Up, but that might be harder than it sounds- and not just because he's a scandal child. People say that his mother was stolen by fairies while he was in the womb; he's strange and unearthly and already speaks like a grown man. He was born under the sign of the Scorpion. Like the rest of his family, he's always active, but he's neither outgoing nor nice.

His traits are Insane and Eccentric, and if Ayana has her way he'll be a wizard someday.

Hello Mina-chan We're once again celebrating your birthday together. This year is a little bit different than last year though the feelings and the joyous atmosphere is still the same, a lot has changed since your birthday! I can't mention all those changes in you but my point is my baby has grown into someone even better than you were and that makes me love you even more.

Thank you for surviving hardships, you've been nothing but a stubborn rock standing amidst raging strom bravely in the middle of the sea. I know you've been struggling a lot but remember that I will always be with you, to hold your hand when you're about to fall, or to give you reassurance that everything will be okay.

Drum Mikin

This week we looked at different way to mic up a drum kit. Different factors to consider and different approaches depending on the circumstances. 

The type of microphone used is really important. You would usually go for a dynamic microphone with a cardioid polar pattern. Condenser mics are way too  sensitive and it’ll destroy them. 

You would use a dynamic mic because they aren’t too sensitive and able to withstand high Sound Pressure Levels. 

There are different companies that create condenser microphones especially for drums such as the Sonotronic drum mic kit. It has a bunch of small-diaphragm cardioid condensers with -10db pad and handles sound pressure levels of up to 135db. They also use a large-diaphragm cardioid condenser kick mic which can handle SPLs of up to 155. 

But usually. Dynamic is best. 

Kick Drum:

For a kick drum you would want to use something like a Shure Beta 52a or an AKG D112 MKII. 

When miking up a kick you need to think about the sound you want. The kick is the pulse of the song. And there are quite a few considerations to keep in mind. 

Around 2-4cm from the head to one side of the beater will capture more of the click/attack of the beater.

Inside the drum, halfway to the head will capture more body and outside with drum with the outer head one will capture a more boomy sound. 

A really large kick can have fundamentals lower than the room can handle. You can end up hearing an octave above the fundamental than the fundamental itself. This could make the pitch of the drum sound higher than what you would hear a smaller drum. 

To dampen the sound of the kick you can stuff some newspaper in there, or a folded pillow case. 

HIHATS:

Use a dynamic mic but be careful of the positioning as it’s easy to get Hi hat spill onto the snare mic and vice versa. 

Sometimes, the snare mic picks up so much of the hat that some engineers don’t see the point of a dedicated hi hat mic. Even with the high leakage from the snare. It’s really worth giving the hi hat it’s dedicated mic for the additional controls it provides. The ability to increase the levels in some parts, or add effects...

There’s a few different ways to mic up a hi hat. Here’s one example. 

Place a mic pointing straight down at a cymbal, around halfway from the edge of the rim. but towards the back of the hat. Away from where the drummer is hitting. Move the mic towards the bell for a thicker sound or more towards the edge for a thinner one. 

Snares:

For a snare you need to use a cardioid mic because the snare drum is so close to the hi hat and other drums. 

Generally the mic is placed between the hi hat and the high tom. About 5cm from the drum head. Point the diaphragm directly at the head, you may need to make minor adjustments to not get any bleed from the hi hat. 

The Shure SM57 has been the go to mic for years. It’s one of the few mics that maintains it’s punch regardless of how loud the drummers playing. 

Toms: 

For toms, again use a dynamic mic, you can use one or two. If using one, place it between the two drums at around 10 to 15cm away from the head. If using two mics, place one above each tom at around 3 to 5 cm. Do the same for floor toms. 

Overhead Techniques:

For overheads, you would usually go for condenser mics. They can be used to capture the sound of the entire kit or used for cymbal mics. 

There’s a few different techniques such as the “Glyn Johns” techniques. Which are overheads at equal distance from the snare with the snare central. 

Or XY Overheads. 

You could use these overheads to record the overall drum kit. Place the microphones about 2 feet above the drummers head, centred over the middle of the drum kit. You can raise or lower the mics to achieved the desired balance.

After receiving our drum lecture on the 30th of November, we went into the studio to look at some different set ups.
