Little Unboxing: Nendoroid Claire!

Something fun came in the mail today! It's what will hopefully be the first of a few Story of Seasons Nendoroids: Claire!

Freeing her from her plastic prison, it's time to start messing with all her little accessories. She comes with a little tiny cow and a baby chick, as well as a turnip and (unpictured, whoops) watering can.

She also comes with alternative arms, hands, and shoulders so she can be posed in different ways. Perhaps the pose in the second image is what someone sees when she shows up to their place of business to joyously hand them a turnip she's had in her fridge for two months?

You can also slide out the box's interior and instantly create a cute little farm diorama! It's a little small if you want to use the included stand to hold up Claire, but otherwise it's a nice fit. The golden watering can was an exclusive bonus when ordering from the Goodsmile Shop.

Of course, you can also just pose her alongside any other Nendoroid figures you've collected. It's truly wonderful to finally have a figure of a character from this iconic series, so I'll definitely be trying more poses and taking more pictures in the future.

While preorders through Goodsmile have closed, she's still available if you missed her from some of their partner shops. For example, Big Bad Toystore still has US preorders available, which are shipping early next year. You might also be able to get lucky and get some of the extra stock from Japanese retailers and have her shipped right away, such as from HLJ. Just be mindful of that extra shipping cost if you go the import route to get her sooner!

If you're hoping for other characters from Story of Seasons to get figures, such as Pete, Gray, Marie, the Harvest Goddess, Nami, Rock... Whoever! Be sure to use the official request form! We made a guide on it and everything! And don't forget to try official names too! The AWL protags are Sion and Maya!

Sacré Bleu

I just remembered reading a book YEARS ago called Sacré Bleu. It was one of the weirdest books I think I've ever read (which is saying something) and I wanted to try to find it again. However, when I tried searching the name (which isn't terribly distinctive) I got lots of results that seemed to be about a mystery book involving the death of Van Gogh. I kept scrolling down and down, looking for a fantasy with extremely weird immortal protagonists who have a mysterious attachment to blue pigment. It ended up that Moore WAS the author of that book I was remembering, but the first search results just had very poor descriptions of the book. It is just WAY more complicated than a mystery about Van Gogh.

It is never clearly revealed HOW these two people from pre-history became immortal . . or just WHAT is going on with ultramarine pigment . . but it romps through a bunch of artists' lives and I remember it as pretty fascinating. I wonder if my library still has it.

Movie Review | Day of the Dead (Miner, 2008)

I was still feeling the good vibes from a showing of the OG Dawn of the Dead last night, so I figured this was the most generous mood I could possibly be in for this one. And, uh, nope, it still sucks. I was hoping with Steve Miner at the helm I might at least be treated to some sturdy hackwork, but this has every tendency of bad 2000s filmmaking: piss yellow lighting, unmotivated shakycam, zombie attacks cut to shreds in the editing room, random bursts of grindhouse filter, overuse of CGI. 

Plot wise, it’s less a remake of the original Day of the Dead and more a generic zombie movie with some callback elements thrown in, like the presence of the military and a bunker. It’s diverting enough when it’s the military characters running around shooting down the zombies, and Mena Suvari, Nick Cannon and Stark Sands have pretty solid chemistry. Now you may be questioning why Cannon was cast in a zombie movie. But I’ll have you know that he got so deep into character here that in real life he got a head start on repopulating the Earth after a zombie apocalypse by having twelve kids. So I guess he went full Method. Also, for what it’s worth, Suvari looks cute in fatigues.

But it’s a lot worse when it’s Suvari’s brother and a bunch of other characters who obnoxiously yell at each other during their scenes. Also, for some reason Ving Rhames is in this in a supporting role despite being in A-list movies at around this time. I have to assume producer Randall Emmett had some pretty good kompromat on him to get him to spend a chunk of his limited screentime as a zombie who gnaws on a chunk of his own skin. 

So yeah, this is bad. But at least I got that extremely lame Nick Cannon joke out of it.

'Tay Berry' was hard to review because it smells like it shares a base with 'Doric Oud'. My brain continuously returned to "this smells like 'Doric Oud', but, like, the best parts of 'Doric Oud' clouded over by autumnal notes" during the reviewing process until me and my faded car deodorant from last summer eventually gave up.
