Miraak's Lounge

There was a lull in business at the moment, and Miraak took the chance when he had it. Let the sous chef know he had to make a phone call and headed off to the back office. He dialed his sister's number and waited for her to pick up.

"Miraak?" Sadrith sounded tired. It was mid-day, she'd probably only just woken up. "How're you doing?"

"Well enough," he said, "You don't sound good, are you still working at the club?"

"Yeah, I am," she replied quietly.

"You know you don't have to keep working there, right? I can get you a job at the Akaviri place I manage."

"Miraak, we've talked about this. It'll pay the student loans off faster, I'll be a lot more comfortable without that hanging over my head."

"Yeah..." Miraak paused, and looked at the picture on his desk. The graduation photo she'd taken with him three years ago. Things had been bad then, but not as bad as now. "Listen, are you free Tirdas, say, at eleven in the morning?"

"What for?"

"Granddad's dead. Dead dead, and his lawyer called me the other day to say we've been left something. You and me both."

"Why would he leave us anything?" Sadrith questioned, "When we cut ties with dad, he cut ties with us."

"I don't know, he just says we're in the will, thought I'd let you know. Are you free?"

"Yeah, but can you pick me up? I had to junk my car."

"How've you been--don't tell me you WALK to work!"

"Miraak, don't be silly. I don't walk to work. I walk BACK."

"At FOUR IN THE MORNING? In the neighborhood you live in--" For a few moments Miraak was practically hysterical, before calming down. "Yes. Yes, I'll pick you up."

"Miraak, I'm a Dovah. I have literally nothing to worry about. The crime stats in this neighborhood are incredibly overblown...." There was a pause of her own there. "Dad's going to be there, isn't he?"

"When has dad ever missed the opportunity to reach for some of his father's money?" Miraak gave a rueful laugh. "We should be glad Vile's office is small, he'll be forced into his mer-ish form."

"Good. ...good."

They said their goodbyes and Miraak hung up, heading back into the kitchen when he heard a shout.

Sadrith was usually outspoken, but any proximity to Alduin and she clammed right on up, giving answers as short as possible. Miraak figured he'd do the talking - it was how things had always worked when it came to their intimidating father.

It started when they were seated in the office, before Clavicus Vile entered. Their father's mer-ish form was tall, pale-skinned, and covered in several places in the black scales that showed he was only the disguise of the true dragon beneath.

"I suppose," came the glare from those slitted eyes Alduin favored, "That you are still making a spectacle of yourself in front of strangers?"

"That's my job, yes." Sadrith's tone was muted.

"Disgusting. You had many better options and that was--"

"Father," Miraak said in a warning tone. "We have talked this to death."

"The talk did not end when you decided it did."

"The talk is OVER, father." Miraak let an edge slip into his voice. "As I told you four years ago, we aren't fighting with you any longer."

"Weak," Alduin growled, nearly slipping into a Shout. "Nikriinne, ney hin."

(Sadrith, seated on Miraak's other side, had suddenly grabbed at his hand and squeezed. He squeezed back.)

"No, we are simply taking our ball and going home."

"Home to a common slum, no doubt, which is where you belong when you--"

"Ah, my dear dovah family!" The polite tone of Clavicus Vile sounded off then, "Apologies. My expertise was needed on an emergency matter...but here I am. Let us proceed to the reading of the will quickly, and not waste any more time."

The first part of Akatosh's will regarded his donations as expected to the church of the Nine Divines. Miraak could still hear his father's familiar ranting on the upstart Talos, but kept focused on the reading at hand.

The donations to various charities took up the first third of the will, and after a few small bequests to friends it then moved on to family.

"Let me begin by saying it is also part of this contract's terms that any attempt to contest the will, will result in partial forfeiture of ones own share."

"You daedric swine," Alduin growled again, this time at Clavicus Vile.

"And of course," Vile showed no signs of being afraid, "Threatening the lawyer's person will result in a consultation fee's worth of gold being cut from the threatener's share. Are we clear?"

Brimming with anger, Alduin sat back. Showing a bit of his fangs as he spoke, he replied, "We are clear."

Alduin retained a great deal of things. Dovah Manor, a trust fund, an insurance policy, the position in the company he'd filled for the last few decades. Still, it was less than he expected, and he said as much.

Clavicus Vile merely went on with the reading. To the two children of Alduin went a manor house in the upper east side of Solitude, and another in Ald'ruhn. If either of them wished not to occupy these houses, offers were already on hand for their sale. A joint trust fund, and individual sums of money - for the remainder of their student loans, and the Dovah Lounge, an Akaviri restaurant in Vivec City with an incredible reputation.

"Gods, the weight this'll take off my shoulders..." Sadrith breathed a long sigh of relief.

"Had you not insisted on dual-majoring in art, you would already have paid it off," Alduin snarked, "Art is for Dibellans, and you are a Dovah."

"Father," Miraak interjected.

"Alduin, if you don't mind, my paralegal--" Clavicus Vile gestured to a plump and rather nervous looking imperial woman, "Has paperwork for you to sign. If you don't wish to risk a conversation that will result in any losses, I highly recommend you get on that."

Still brimming with anger, Alduin left.

"Always angry, that one," Vile went on. "Now, decisions do not need to be made about the houses now..."

"What do you think?" Miraak asked Sadrith, "You want either of those houses?"

"Wouldn't mind living in Ald'ruhn again," she replied, "I don't imagine you'd care for being a nord in Dunmer territory, though."

"I've been in Ramsay's kitchen, there's nothing they can say that'll faze me," Miraak huffed. "I'd prefer to be close to the Dovah Lounge...that, that's a bit more to my taste than a house in Solitude. Provided you don't mind having your big brother in the same house over your shoulder all the time."

"With dad ready to shout us down at every chance, I WANT you there. He didn't care about us before, he'll 'care' now. I'd...rather have you close."

"Does this mean you'll want to be rid of the house in Solitude?" Vile asked.

Miraak and Sadrith both nodded, and the lawyer drew out another envelope. "A list of contacts for you, then, of those who are interested in its sale. And may I say..."

"If we ever need a contract written, you're available. We know," Sadrith said, "How much did you get out of our grandfather for this will?"

"Enough," Vile said with a smile, "But he knew if he wanted something Alduin couldn't find loopholes in he needed to come to me. I am the best choice for writing ironclad contracts - period."

It was a breath of fresh (ashy) air, going back to Ald'ruhn. They hadn't been back in years; when they were a lot younger Alduin hadn't much cared for the ash-blasted city of Ald'ruhn. But it felt - right, to Sadrith, it felt like home. The foul weather outside was nice to watch from inside.

Miraak, of course, wore his mask outside, and only lifted it once he'd come inside.

"How you can feel at home here, I don't know," he laughed, "I feel like I've smoked two packs even with the mask on my face...but I guess your mother took you here often enough."

"When dad was...a bit too much. Before she..." There was a pause. "She said here it didn't matter, everything would turn to ash anyway, that it was pretty to watch."

Another pause.

"Do you think you'd want me waiting tables at the lounge?"

"Thought you didn't want to work for me."

"That was before. The loan's paid off. I can actually breathe." Sadrith took a mocking sort of deep breath, and coughed slightly as she inhaled the slightest bit of ash. "I hated stripping but I was making a fortune doing it."

The evening news here seemed to be handled by some dunmer who also wore a mask, and he looked only long enough to see the weather tomorrow was going to be ashy but sunny in both Ald'ruhn and Vivec City.

Good. It would make things a lot easier.

Miraak put a blanket over Sadrith when he realized she'd fallen asleep and then headed to the kitchen to see what was in the fridge.

Skyrim DLCs (un)popular opinion

Dragonborn = amazing

Miraak is such a cool and sympathetic villain. Solthseim is such an interesting, beautiful country. Teldryn!!! Hermaeus Mora is terrifying and awesome. New shouts! Fated enemies. The storyline is just *chef's kiss*. Lucien Flavius' questline (if you like mods). Nice perks from the black books.

Dawnguard = bad

Serana annoys me for some reason. Both sides suck. No one, not even the people who work with him, likes Isran. Lord Harkon and his court is all cutthroat and the lighting is suspect. The vampire lord form is ugly af and nerfs your magicka. The quests are so far apart that doing a survival playthrough takes forever. The soul cairn is weird and I forget about the quests there as soon as I'm gone.

I’ve read many fics revolving around Miraak but rarely his backstory and characterization is put into play properly. Your work is just *chefs kiss* I adore the backstory you’ve given him and how you’ve taken into consideration where he’s come from/what he’s gone through and applied it to your stories

Yay! Thank you! An awful lot of fics either do nothing with his backstory, or have him given to the Cult as a child. I thought I'd go the other route and give him a Normal Family background, humble origins, rise to power by no means guaranteed, carve it out himself by the power of his Thu'um.

I probably wouldn't write a full story about Young Miraak - too depressing given how it'd end. But the odd short story, maybe.

5 songs tag! 🎼🎵🎻🪕🥁🪘

My dear @bougainvillea-and-saltwater tagged me to list 5 songs that fit with my fic, 'Wherever you go, there you are' so here it is!

1. "Follow you" by Imagine Dragons. This is the first song that came to mind because it fits so well with the friendship and found family theme of the fic. This is the fellowships anthem more or less, because it really shows how close they are and how they'd always be by Ravonna's side! The chorus is especially fitting here: "I will follow you way down wherever you may go/ I'll follow you way down to your deepest low/ I'll always be around wherever life takes you"

2. "Soap" by the Oh Hellos! I see this as *the* song for Ravonna and Miraak. The lyrics are absolutely perfect for them, and it encapsulates their relationship extremely well. I love the line: "I think that you're worth keeping around/ I think you're worth holding onto" -> this is very fitting especially from Ravvy's point of view! :D

3. "Can you feel the love tonight" by Elton John VERY SAPPY, I KNOW, but I can see it as a Miraak and Ravonna song! I thing she relates to the "And can you feel the love tonight?/ It is where we are/ It's enough for this wide-eyed wanderer/ That we got this far/ And can you feel the love tonight/ How it's laid to rest?/ It's enough to make kings and vagabonds/ Believe the very best" because at first she definitely considers herself to be the vagabond, a wanderer who doesn't have a place to call home while Miraak is, or better, was the king, as the leader of the Dragon Cult. He also makes her feel like a good person. He's her chance to redeem herself and become better and let go of the vengeful person she once was AND FORGIVE, so really, he brings her hope, he makes her believe the very best ;) AT the same time, Miraak sees Ravonna not killing him as his second chance at life. He gets to live again because of her, and he is very grateful for that.

4. "Dance Macabre" by Ghost. I'm twisting the lyrics a bit on this one, or ignoring them a bit. But the song itself really encapsulates the "dancing our way through the apocalypse" vibe that Ravonna and her fellowship have, I can really see them all dancing and having fun to this song. They will take all the chances they can get to have as much fun as possible, because they don't know when it's going to be the last time they do.

5. And last but certainly not least, a song that I associate with my version of Miraak: "Iris" by The Goo Goo Dolls! It's so fitting that it actually hurts my heart! Just these lyrics are perfect. Purely him!

"And I don't want the world to see me/ 'Cause I don't think that they'd understand/ When everything's made to be broken/ I just want you to know who I am" BECAUSE HE DOES WANT HER TO KNOW WHO HE IS. SHE SAW MIRAAK BUT THAT WASN'T HIM. HE WANTS HER TO KNOW HIM FOR REAL, THE MAN BEFORE THE DRAGON CULT. FENRIK. BECAUSE MAYBE IF SHE DID, SHE'D LOVE HIM AND AAAAH I'M GOING TO STOP BECAUSE I'M ALREADY YELLING.

He looks so good! I can't believe how far your art has come in such a short space of time. The colour choices, robe textures, lovely shading on the face, it's just, chefs kiss. He's looking decided frosty here, which I love.

Nonvul may have started off as AU Chrysanthe but he's very much diverged and formed his own story, I think. I've watched the dragon priest Chrysanthe AU with great interest, admired the time and love you've put into building the lore, and I'm so pleased to see it blossom into its own thing! I've really enjoyed the artwork and very much hope to read a full-fledged story about him and Miraak one day.

Lovely Nonvul hasn't been drawn in months, and he deserves to have a chance to shine again!

I feel like I finally have the skill to properly convey his appearance, and I'm so glad to get the chance to do so.

As for his story, he *is* the adaptation of @99corentine ’s Chrysanthe, *buuuut,* I plan on working on his story separately, to really expand upon it and give him what he deserves. He won't be much of an AU anymore, though, and so I'll be going through and adding ‘oc: Nonvul’ tags to all of my previous arts. I hope this decision is understandable

Hmm, this is cool! My pleasure.

A Miraak that chose to turn to Hircine is a lot more driven in some ways than the one who went to Mora. He is a hunter, someone who sees his Dragonborn powers and focuses on the most important part being the consumption of the soul, the permanent end to any dragon.

After years in the Hunting Grounds, I can see a Miraak who is boastful and full of posturing, arrogant and vicious to offset being hunted in turn. He brooks absolutely no disagreement at all and rules with an iron fist. He remains manipulative, choosing to isolate and subjugate followers, with an ample helping of fear. He will tend towards bloody shows of power (hanging corpse cages, anyone), whenever he feels threatened.

This Miraak, with his focus on death, is a lot more vengeful towards the cult in general, and encourages his followers to seek out and destroy the temples, continue his work. He is pleased by sacrifices, particularly of draugr, though as always, he disdains unnecessary violence - thinking it crass and crude, as well as an indication of poor skill. To Miraak, the perfect way of killing a dragon is to sneak up on it while it sleeps, or betray it while it eats, so that he can have the pleasure of taunting it as it dies slowly.

Physically, I think his powers would be a souped up Dragon Aspect. How better to hunt dragons than as a creature with all the advantages (the wings, the tail, the teeth, the claws) without any of the disadvantages (the lumbering size, no hands) to hunt dragons? He is animalistic in the extreme, and I think in his worst moments he might even forget how to speak but just Shout voicelessly. He embodies Hircine's much-more feral sphere, though his smaller size and magical skill means he utilises trickery than brute strength when he is actually hunting. I think he would remain in this changed form the majority of the time, and may even find it difficult to change back as it were.

I actually think this Miraak would be a lot friendlier to the Last Dragonborn. He would try to kill them - and never stop - and he would expect to be killed in turn, but he would respect any non-pacifistic Dragonborn and orchestrate a meeting between them to see who was the stronger. He may even want the Last Dragonborn to succeed, out of a desire to no longer have to live the life of a scavenger warlord.

I think Hircine maintains his control over Miraak by exploiting his trauma from the Dragon Cult. Miraak as I write him has had a very violent upbringing where he has been forced to be useful or very aggressive to stave off pain, which tails real well with a constant fear of being hunted and persecution. Miraak is paranoid, constantly suspicious of not only Hircine but his own nature - fearing losing himself to the beast that Hircine has made of him. A Miraak that escapes the Hunting Grounds would not survive too long in Nirn, he would never be able to relax again and would wear out his heart too quickly.

Does Miraak like any modern food?

He does, but only when I or Xelzaz makes it, we're both good chefs. And where one of us lacks skill the other usually makes up for it, while he (Xelzaz) doesn't like sweetrolls as much as others in our group he can make them. I can't they always turn out wrong.

The foods Miraak tends to enjoy most are quite simple like Apple pie, soups, beef and chicken, as for the sweet stuff he enjoys boiled creme treats, honey nut treats and pancakes with syrup or honey.
