Summary: Charles's soon-to-be-ex has locked him out of their apartment in a fit of temper. Without his coat, his wallet, or his phone. On Christmas. He expects Charles to spend the night begging at the door. Charles walks out instead to the only place that is still open - a Jewish deli across the street. The owner had always scowled at Charles whenever he and ex stopped by, but at least it's warm in there and possibly the man will let him use the phone to call his sister.

Pocketful of Miracles / Hope Lange as Elizabeth "Queenie" Martin

The story is set in the 1930s, but this gown owes much less to that era than to Elizabeth Taylor's dress from A Place in the Sun. This is unlikely to be a coincidence, as Edith Head designed both garments. The heavy ivory satin looks great, though, and I love the combination of ruching and sparkle on the bodice. The fur-trimmed shoulder cape makes it the perfect thing for a holiday party--appropriately, as the movie does take place around Christmastime. (You can see a bit of a tree in the background of some of the pictures above.)

Miracle on 34th Street / Natalie Wood as Susan Walker

Susan has a couple of nice winter coats in this movie. I picked this double-breasted plaid one for three reasons. First, because it's a nice item in itself. Second, because Maureen O'Hara (as Doris Walker) and John Payne (as Fred Gailey) also have terrific costumes in the scene where it appears--just look at that gorgeous overcoat and perfectly sloped hat on Payne! And third, because I couldn't resist a chance to screencap Natalie Wood giving some truly epic sideye.

The tailoring on the coat is very nice: note how the stripes line up between the body and the sleeves. It also has a belt in the back to adjust the fit. With it, Susan wears a hood-style hat with rosettes over the ears, probably of felt.

This was always my favorite of the classic Christmas movies. Remakes? What remakes?
