Tomorrow Uh Tonight!
Didn't Paul once comment on Uh! All Night (1985) and said writing it was the result of trying to synthesize Tomorrow and Tonight (1977) and Heaven's on Fire (1984), or something like that?
I guess that's something that could be considered astonishing, if you keep in mind that Heaven's on Fire works quite well on its own as a kind of re-write of Tomorrow and Tonight.
Reason enough for me to cheekily take Heaven's on Fire completely out of Paul's equation and place Uh! All Night right next to Tomorrow and Tonight for the sake of simplicity and take a quick look at the two side by side.
And faster than Paul could ever hold his chest hair up to a camera, my hunch is confirmed, and I'd be in danger of confusing the vocal and chorus verses of both songs with each other if Uh! All Night's refrain wasn't underlaid with the riff from Led Zep's Misty Mountain Hop. Which certainly plays a not unsignificant role of distraction there, as for Kiss' musical identity in general.
Maybe someone should do a remix and put Uh! All Night or Heaven's on Fire with the vocals from Tomorrow and Tonight, and vice versa. Who wouldn't want to hear that? And maybe Paul and Gene should consider releasing some kind of box set with remixes like this.
There would certainly be more than enough material for something like that, I guarantee it.

“How do I—! How do I know!” Bilbo echoed, bristling with exasperation. “I journeyed all the way across Middle Earth, through forests and over the hills, crossed the Misty Mountains and the Great Greenwood through to the ruins of the great City of Dale and further still to Erebor, fighting goblins and orcs and giant spiders and a whole blasted war, then did the whole thing again in reverse, and you have the gall to ask me how I know!”
There was a beat of total silence. “Well, it was a reasonable question,” said Fortinbras, stung.
Bilbo drew in a long breath through his nose and gave an almighty huff. “Mark my words. All of you,” he said, pointing a finger at all the gathered faces, his voice tight with the desperation to be taken seriously. The dwarves would have listened. They would’ve had his back. “You must evacuate Hobbiton. Take only what you need to survive, and run. Go east. Forget your handkerchiefs and hang the silver spoons. Anyone who stays here, will die.”
“Now, Bilbo…”
He held up a hand to his cousin’s face. “No. No, don’t. You’ll see. Take my advice or don’t, you’ll see,” he said, casting a fearful glance at the smoke billowing from the ruins of the first raid. It was the pebble before the avalanche, and there were already more, thinner trails of smoke joining the larger one. A lump formed in his throat. They were already coming. He gave one last, loud proclamation to the crowd. “Flee on the east road. Tell anyone, everyone — we have no choice.”
—Excerpt from There Is One They Could Follow (One They Could Call Thain) by Oakensting (WorseOmens) on ao3
Basically, Bilbo pulls a Thorin Oakenshield and leads his people from the orc-ravaged Shire to safety. Meanwhile in Erebor, Thorin refuses to believe Bilbo is dead.
Sadly, i think this fic was deleted. I mourned it more than some family members.

*staggers into the room Kramer-style covered in water, soot, glitter, and slivers of paper from the waste bin of a paper shredder like confetti* So, guess who just watched the lotr trilogy for the first time despite being a fan of the Hobbit for a literal decade! Also the last two (three?) months have sucked ass and I’m exhausted, so buckle up.
Anyway, this is one of my comfort fics, I love it so much. Everything from the Pining(TM) to the blatant parallels between the dwarves and hobbits.
Things I loved in particular:
Gandalf the White Ox
Kíli taking one look at Thorin and being like “oh I know exactly what’s going on here”
Hamfast and Drogo
Petty Thorin
Seriously, he’s so petty I love it
Bard just being like “yeah, that’s pretty much how I was when I lost my wife”
The r e u n i o n
“you’re like a hobbit king!” “my title is thain, actually” *incredulous staring*

Hoffstrahm AU kinda thing idk
CW for mental health issues and su!c!de
OK LISTEN
What if post-glass coffin Hoffstrahm AU where Hoffman spares Strahm bc he pussies out at the end and couldn’t bear seeing Strahm die after his arm was starting to snap. Hoffman fixes him up (does a lowsy job at it ofc), Strahm miraculously survives the injury , he gets kidnapped and thrown in some cabin in the countryside where Hoffman feeds him and stuff, keeping him alive. Peter, still shell-shocked and helplessly incapacitated, stays with him. So Strahm lives but is so PTSD-ridden he can’t even function normally, he gets paranoia and panic attacks and practically depends on Hoffman like a little child.
LIKE okay I know this is kinda another typical “Strahm-survives” kind of premise for a fic but listen. While Hoffman, who is, at the time, still the cold-blooded selfish murderer that he is, initially treats Strahm like a dog and lets him live out of mere pity, he SLOWLY realises, through his actions, that he actually wants to care and protect this utterly broken man who’s a result of his doings, and inevitably falls in love. (cue the florence nightingale effect) Hoffman begins cooking him meals, from imprisoning him inside the home to walking with him everyday when the sky’s clear, washing his hair, showing him his favorite films or music, letting Peter sleep in his arms whenever he has a nightmare.
I suppose we could imagine Strahm being so traumatised and wounded he’s drained of his usual rationality and temper and that’s why he lets Hoffman baby him. But of course Strahm isn’t COMPLETELY broken. His symptoms lessen, he gets better but still has frequent attacks. After some time he regains his usual wit and nature. At one point of course he simply realises what’s been happening and goes batshit angry. Hoffman sympathetically and patiently works it out with him. Strahm resists at first, perhaps by trying to kill Hoffman and escape or even attempting k!ll!ng himself. After trial and error and lots and lots of blood sweat and tears, Strahm starts realising that Hoffman genuinely cares… and not out of pity, but love. His mental instability and wanted status leaves him crawling back to Hoffman whenever he tries to run away.
Eventually Hoffman stops killing and cuts ties with Kramer. All his resentment and vengeance now replaced by his attachment to Peter. As for Strahm, he takes a tad longer to give in, and to accept the fact that he’s actually content and at peace when he’s with Hoffman and break through the moral boundary(aka the fact that Hoffman used to be a reckless bloodthirsty killer). Hoffman pretty much retires and wants to pursue a different way of living with Strahm.
And after everything, they end up becoming two runaways living in a wooded cabin surrounded by forests and mountains, secluded from a tiny town where they work together among the locals, indifferent to the past they’ve left behind. They’d go hiking and fishing, watch all the shitty films Mark would bring home, plant a garden, cut lumber, play-fight and cuddle in grass fields. Mark tending to Peter whenever he gets a panic attack, Peter learns to get used to receiving such solace. Slowly it becomes this usual, domestic thing between them. Perhaps one day one of them would propose to the other. Perhaps they’d grow old together, too.
-
P/S i was listening to The Bug Collector by Haley Heynderickx when I had this thought. i suppose i kind of saw this poetic analogy between “the bug” and Strahm’s chronic issues and inner conflicts that Hoffman wants to get rid of while Hoffman is the “bug collector” so to speak??.. idk interpret it however you will but this song truly inspired the whole mess. kinda fitted the misty earthy mountains vibe i was going for with this prompt too. really suggest you guys give the song a listen its beautiful. i also suggest checking out the genius annotation of the lyrics

seinfeld characters in yellowjackets would be like. kramer vanishes into the forest for three days and when he comes back he's covered in blood and talking to people who aren't there. elaine insists she's above eating anyone and then is the first one to take a bite out of newman's dead body he's not even cooked yet she just goes for the raw thigh. jerry enters grief-induced psychosis when he realizes he'll never get to fight with newman again. george is mad no one picked him to be the ritual sacrifice. he doesn't want to actually be sacrificed he just thinks it would be nice to be wanted. frank eats a shoe - not even a leather one. just a straightup sneaker. uncle leo is so horrified to see it that he hikes 300 miles in one go and gets them rescued.
yellowjackets characters in seinfeld would be like. jackie breaks up with shauna again because she won't let jackie pick the music in the car but then wants her back because she realizes she's developed a pavlovian response and now can only feel true happiness when listening to angsty girl rock. van tries to convince her bodega guy that she's actually a spy to win a bet with taissa. misty stalks her doctor because she's bored. lottie gets caught shoplifting something small but gets misidentified as the leader of a local crime ring and van has to bail her out of jail with the money she won from the bet with taissa. while she's in jail she runs into misty who got arrested for breaking into her doctor's house. meanwhile, natalie accidentally befriends an actual spy who lives in the neighborhood. the last shot is them driving down the street listening to one of shauna's CDs that jackie threw out the car window during a tantrum.

my excitement at seeing jessica jones and luke cage etc in ur fic :)))) also LOVE the jake lockely jessica jones luke cage etc friendship thing
OH BABY WAS I EXCITED TO PUT THEM IN THERE. You've never seen such delight as me writing witty banter. I wrote so much I had to cut out half of it.
As I mentioned previously, I'm most familiar with Matt (really familiar with Matt, fortunately/unfortunately) and Jessica. I only saw a few episodes of Luke Cage ages ago but I decided not to worry about that when I made him pretentious and annoying. Actually, I want an excuse to tell people the conceit for them, so I'll tell it here. I'll even do it in BULLETPOINT FORMAT like other people do for their AUs.
Always Sunny + Teen Titans (2005) is the vibe of their sitcom
The team itself is Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Danny Rand, Colleen Wing, and Misty Knight. Matt and Jake are the Kramers (they just kinda drop in and help out). (Oh my god Kramer Jake)
They are the kind of superhero team who all live together and have sitcom hijinks but it's just because even Harlem rent prices are skyrocketing and none of them have enough friends to have anybody else as a roommate.
There's character development, but at the outset everybody is either incredibly smarmy, incredibly pretentious, or the most awkward person socially you've ever seen. They all think everybody else is insufferable and annoying, except for themselves. In reality this is the least tolerable people on the planet together in a room.
Luke keeps on trying to explain political issues to people who don't know and don't care. Jessica thinks women are catty and fake so she spends all her time with dudes but she won't stop bitching to them about how terrible men are. Danny will go outside and find himself accidentally working at McDonald's because he wanted to 'help a guy out'. You can take the Misty out of the pigs but you can't take the pigs out of the Misty. Colleen used to have a more respectable life before she had a 1/3rd life crisis and dropped everything to live like a bum in a Harlem apartment and she blames everybody else for it. Matt's definition of fun is going to an art museum and staring thoughtfully at the paintings, freaking everybody else out. Jake is there.
Jessica and Luke, two incredibly bonkers people, have a very steady and loving and reliable relationship. Misty and Colleen, two people who swear up and down how normal they are, have those scary vegan wellness jogging together at 5am color coordinated WLW relationships that makes it seem like they're trying to get a good grade in relationship. They fight WAY more often. Danny's terrible with dating because he keeps forgetting that a girlfriend isn't just, like, a buddy. We know what's up with Matt's relationships. Jake keeps saying he has a wife but we know that's bullshit.
Misty and Colleen and Jessica think they're all private detectives. They're not private detectives. Luke and Danny think that they're doing superhero work on request for pay. They aren't doing that either. Jake thinks that they're the stupidest and least lethal mercenary group of all time and no matter how many times they try to explain to him that they're PIs/superheroes/freelancers he refuses to believe them. This is because Jake is right. Matt thinks they need real jobs. He is also right.
They are relatively functional, sane people apart, but if you lock them in a room they turn unbelievably dysfunctional and crazier than a box of rats. Superhero Team That Makes Each Other Worse. But also, like, in a necessary way. These are all guys that, if they don't go off their shits at least once a week, they explode. They've all tried to be normal people and failed. They tried to be socially acceptable and failed. They tried to do it alone and failed. And now they're all taking that first, terrifying step into not doing it alone. And none of them know how to do it, but none of them realized how badly they needed it either.
