The Rise of the Guardians IOS Mobile App

In the Year leading up to the movie premier Dreamworks released a Mobile Countdown app for fans to keep track of the date, and slowly reveal characters as the months passed.

Beginning with Bunnymund and ending with the reveal of Jack Frost, each Character was unlocked over the course of 6 months, as each character was revealed there would be a short intro, a character spot from the voice actors, and a series of cards containing between 6-10 small facts about them. Then with the prompt to Enter <Lair> you could explore realms, do activities, or watch character animations.

Here are the 3 characters whose lairs you could explore, beginning with Bunnymund.

If you so chose to you could enter the Warren where you would find yourself in a scrolling view of moss covered boulders as far as the eye can see, a gentle sun shines under a soft mist. Faces are etched into oblong stones wearing various expressions from Joy to Fear.

You stand under the drooping branches of wisteria as hundreds of eggs meandered around you among soft blue fireflies.

Entering Tooth's Palace you find yourself standing on a platform surrounded by spires seemingly floating in the air, small hummingbird like fairies whizzing by.

As you turn to explore the fairies take notice of you and approach your screen to investigate.

Entering the Shadows brings you to the quiet clearing of a forest, an old abandoned bedframe in the middle surrounded by the fresh growth of grass trying to peak out of the early spring snow. It groans and breaks a little when you click on it.

Scrolling down you descend a shadowed collection of stairs seemingly piled atop each other, further still you find a cluster of black iron cages suspended from the ceiling.

Finally you reach a bronze globe of the Continents, empty space where the oceans should be, and behind it a palace of infinite shadowed archways all overlaying and collapsing into each other.

Applied Content Labels

There are rando CLs being applied on the mobile app. I follow (and am in turn followed by) mostly fiber artist who post content about animal fiber production, spinning, weaving, and other forms of fabrication.

These posts are being flagged as needing a content label due to 'possible mature content'.

It's processing fiber from the poofs of fluff to garments FFS not outlining a stripteaser.

Report this shit when it happens, please. Something changed on April 26 because this crap flagged a dozen posts on my & fellow fiber blogs within hours of each other.

how do I turn off the number bubbles that invaded my mobile app tumblr feed/home icon THEY ARE MAKING ME CRAZY BC I CANT EVER FINISH THE TASK OF CHECKING MY FEED

and also they stay there until I scroll all the way back up to the top and refresh, which completely harshes my scrolling mellow. which is an unacceptable zone to harsh. i've been dramatically long-suffering about the other recent changes but this one will actually drive me from the android mobile app.

How I've been falling asleep lately

I've been pretty quiet lately because I've been slowly working on an android app of my own outside of work. Still a long way to go before it's finished, but baby steps.

It's an app where you can make custom beading patterns easily with mobile UI in mind. The only other one I've seen on the android store was this really old one with only two stars because they hide 90% of the features behind a paywall while calling it a free app.

While I like using the Beadographer website it has its limits and is designed for computers in mind rather than touch screens. Trying to use it on a phone can be a bit annoying.

Right now I have a basic grid set up for square stitch and loom stitch with the ability to select colors, color/clear beads on tap, add rows/columns, and pan/zoom in using two finger touch. I plan on adding more features including the following:

Drag your finger over several beads to color them at once rather than have to tap them individually.

Templates for several styles including peyote, brick, herringbone, right angle weave, different circular peyote stitches, and others.

Auto save patterns in progress.

Can store multiple patterns.

Create and save custom colors to use between projects.

Tools like undo/redo, rotate the canvas, select and drag, color picker, image import, and mirror.

Export patterns as png files.

Available different kinds of beads (toho, miyuki, etc)

I know this isn't most peoples' cup of tea but I'm really excited to try and complete this, and maybe even get it on the app store :D

My biggest worry is how I'm going to handle the circular peyote patterns since they don't conform to grids as easily as other styles would due to increases. The rest seems easy enough albeit long and tedious to develop and test for everything.

Yes! Our app will be a Progressive Web App (PWA) that will be downloaded directly from the browser site. Once installed it will behave just like a native app, but this way we don't have to worry about app store restrictions. In the interim: we've also optimized our site with improvements for mobile browsing.

Rise of the Guardians Dash n Drop

The mobile game by PikPok and released in the App Store and Google Play. It stayed online for years but ultimately was taken down in 2016.

This game, by every right, should have been what was released on game consoles everywhere. The graphics, music, and gameplay are all brilliantly done. The game is fun, addictive, and incredibly challenging without being frustrating. It has only one single control, something that should make this unbelievably simple to play but creates a difficulty in maneuvering around the constant enemies approaching from all sides.

This likely encourages the purchase of boosts in the workshop, but the lack of negative consequences to losing a level means you don't experience the frustration that fuels in-app game purchases.

The price of coins is reasonable for the cost of each lower level boost. For $20 you can get 1,500 Holiday shields, protecting you from 4,500 nightmare attacks. (In 2012 I was making $10 an hour, the cost of the ticket to see this movie was $8)

And that's not the only boost, as you progress across the cities you begin to gain support from your fellow Guardians, who will attack or block the Nightmares to protect your sliegh.

From Sandy turning them into Coins, recouping part of your purchase, to Jack freezing them in place making them harmless or easily breakable if you run into them. These boosts are not just a purchase item, you can collect them as you go, either by themselves or by rescuing Elves on the way.

Like all mobile games they keep you coming back with daily goals, and get you started with rewards for logging in on Facebook and joining their group or liking them. So you don't have to spend real money on coins if you didn't want to.

And a Leaderboard so you could see how you were stacking up with fans around the world.

Although its no longer in the app store if you have an older Android phone, or download the Vmos app and run an older version of Android on your phone, you may still be able to download and play the game HERE. This is a fully downloadable app, but I have not been able to verify if it still works disconnected from the developers.
