Hi! On anon for my safety, but I saw the ISSTD tweeted smth on the etiology of DID and I wanted to know your thoughts on it? Mostly for processing’s sake as well, as I can struggle with understanding studies now and then

The paper is Revisiting the etiological aspects of dissociative identity disorder: a biopsychosocial perspective. A very good one that I recommend to anyone interested in the causation of DID! I don't think I can do it justice if I tried to summarize the entire thing, so I'll just write down some bullet points of things I found interesting:

What is DID?: 

DID is a complex, posttraumatic, developmental disorder that is caused by trauma in childhood (usually very early childhood).

What causes DID?:

DID arises when a child’s ability to develop an ordinary sense of self in relation to others is impeded by unintegrated trauma.

Emotional neglect by parents and/or siblings is the strongest predictor of DID (and any other dissociative disorder).

More covert trauma such as dysfunctional communication in families or subtle emotional neglect can lead to milder presentations DID.

DID VS PTSD:

Switching between alters is considered to be a more elaborated version of PTSD intrusions & avoidance.

People with PTSD & DID generally experience the same amount of feeling shame, betrayal, self-blame, anger and fear.

People with DID tend to experience more feelings of alienation, loneliness, and disconnection than people with PTSD.

DID VS normal experiences:

The human mind is naturally made up of multiple interconnected “modes” that make up their whole self.

Trauma & dissociation causes modes to become decoupled and start existing in smaller, isolated pockets.

In DID, the modes have become so disconnected that individual modes start functioning as if they, independently from each other, are the whole self.

In a non-DID brain, new modes are always being created and old modes are always being updated.

In DID, this process is impaired. New modes are created in a disjointed way, and old modes don't get updated correctly if at all.

Have you read any books on DID/OSDD? If so, would you recommend any of them to people with either disorder?

Ohohoho I've read many books related to dissociation & trauma! You can find a bunch of them in this pdf drive, along with my recommendations below. Here's the books I recommend and why I think they're helpful:

Understanding & treating dissociative identity disorder: a relational approach: Want to understand wtf DID/OSDD even are, but you don't want to dive into a book with graphic trauma descriptions or scientific jargon? This book is the perfect starting place, in my opinion.

The Haunted Self: Love scientific jargon? Don't mind if you have to read through pages of graphic trauma descriptions? Want to finally understand what structural dissociation is all about and why DID/OSDD are trauma-related disorders? Read this book!

Got Parts?: This one is a tad old but it's honestly solid advice and a great starting place for anyone who is newly diagnosed or discovering their DID/OSDD.

Coping with trauma-related dissociation: Okay, so you've read Got Parts? or maybe you're a bit further along in recovery and you need something that really tackles all the deep-seated issues that come with having DID/OSDD. THIS is the self-help book to get.

Name: Robo Mario

Debut: Mario Kart Arcade GP

What if Mario had a mysterious metallic counterpart? One that could show up in spinoffs like Mario Kart as a sort of cool rival? Nintendo once asked this question, and made that character a reality.

And then many years after that, Robo Mario showed up!

Robo Mario is exactly what he sounds like! A robot version of Mario. METAL Mario may be mysterious, but ROBO Mario is not, because the emblem on his hat makes it clear he was made by E. Gadd. That guy is just making stuff all the time! Do you think he had permission from Mario to make this? I hope not. That would be funny. I suppose if E. Gadd created both Robo Mario and Gooigi, that would make them brothers! And I personally consider Gooigi to be a Mario Brother, so that would make Robo Mario one too. That's them! The four Mario Brothers!

Robo Mario is sadly not playable, and only appears as an opponent in certain challenge stages, where he is a big ol CHEATER. The challenge is that the player cannot pick up any items in the race, while Robo Mario can use as many as he pleases, whenever he pleases! He's like the CPU players in Super Mario Kart, who didn't pick up items during the race, but instead could use their personal item at any time. That was silly. Why did they do that?

While I think Metal Mario is very cool with his weird implications and status as a distinct character, Robo Mario is definitely VISUALLY cooler, and I would probably play as him sometimes if I could. Sadly, he never appears outside of the arcade games, and is not even playable in those. It's ok, though! The Thunder Cloud item was able to join mainline Mario Kart after originating in Arcade GP! Maybe Robo Mario could be eligible, too...? As it stands, though, Thunder Cloud plaguing Mario Kart Wii is like Robo Mario sending his regards for being forgotten. That rascal!

I must warn you! If you would like to kiss Robo Mario on the mouth, I must ask you to reconsider. Not because I am judging you. It's because his mustache is a jagged slice of metal, and I don't want you to slice your lips! Please kiss Robo Mario on his nose, which is a Mario's favorite place to be kissed.

Robo-Nene loves birds. She will sit and listen to them in the SEKAI. She also imitates birdsong a lot. After a while, she became the leader of a bird flock. If people try to attack Nene, they are both chased down by an angry robot and an angry pack of birds.

is it okay to feel like you switched but not know who it is? or to switch without even noticing?

Yes! YES! This is something I have experienced so much! It's a lot more common than the online community & media portrayals will make you think. Dissociation can impede your ability to be aware of what's going on inside yourself & your system. If you have a complex dissociative disorder, it's very normal to not notice you switched or to not know who you are.

if it’s ok to ask a follow up question.. how can u differentiate between anp or ep or a mix of both and can a host be an ep?

Here's what Nijenhuis says from The Trinity of Trauma Volume III (p.17):

"‘Apparently normal parts’ (ANPs) primarily aim to achieve the goals of common life. ‘Fragile emotional parts’ (fragile EPs) primarily defend the basic integrity of life amid a devastating umwelt. ‘Controlling emotional parts’ (controlling EPs) primarily strive to generate and maintain a sense of personal power, of shining autonomy. To achieve their aims ANPs strive to ignore the phenomenal selves and worlds of the EPs. They strive to feel, know, and/or realize it as little as possible. In the attempt to delimit their fragility, ignoring (e.g., mentally avoiding) EPs is a form of control. Although fragile EPs feel and know themselves to be fragile, they long and strive to defend their very existence. Their defensive actions or passions involve a form of control. Stuck in the dreadful past, however, they remain more or less ignorant of the actual present in terms of the third-person’s conception of chronological time, place, and the unity the fragile EPs are a part of. Controlling EPs share this ignorance and try to ignore their fragility. They strive to control their life and their umwelt. Being prototypes, traumatized individuals can encompass both mixtures and variations of these three prototype."

To put this more simply, there can be any variation or mixture of the following:

ANP = Parts that aim to achieve the goals of daily life. They are usually avoidant or ignorant of the trauma and EP.

Fragile EP = Parts that are stuck in trauma-time. The past trauma still feels like the present for them, and they defend this perception and existence. The online community often calls them "trauma-holders."

Controlling EP = Parts that aim to aim to maintain their autonomy and power. They sometimes turn against other parts, or even people outside of the system. The online community often calls them "protectors" or "persecutors."

To help you tell the difference, ANP tend to have more higher processing while EP usually have more lower processing (see chart below):

Also, yes an EP can be a host.
