Hi, so, it's been a while. I apologize for inactivity. Honestly, my excuse is pretty much what you hear from most depressed people: depression hits like a bitch, and lack of motivation. That basically sums it up for me. Oh, plus drdtxmas... Which y'all should join! Really fun!

Right now I'm writing some terueden for drdtxmas. Since I'm mentioning it, maybe I'll promote it here when I post it.

Anyway, here are some tidbits or head cannons that may or may not have to do with the fic. They're all family-related. Some of these I might reuse in other fics, too. I don't know.

tw: there's homophobia in this, and it gets icky.

˚₊· ͟͟͞➳❥ Eden's parents are supportive of her sexuality but aren't quite understanding of what her sexuality is. Or specifically, that it's possible for a woman to love only a woman or a man that loves only a man. In their eyes, Eden is bi or pan and happens to fall for another girl.

˚₊· ͟͟͞➳❥ Eden's parents adore Teruko. They don't talk about her sexuality at all after they learned that Teruko has dated men, too. But they adore her strength. They know Teruko can keep Eden safe, and they love that Eden is happy with her. Mostly because of what Teruko can do physically for Eden (as in, protection, and since they see her as a tomboy, maybe she'll show their daughter that women will always love men).

˚₊· ͟͟͞➳❥ Teruko's brother likes Eden, and he loves Eden for Teruko. In contrast to Eden's family, Teruko's brother thinks she's good for Teruko from a more emotional standpoint. She's kind, patient, loving, affectionate, forgiving, and a good person. He believes she has the potential to teach Teruko some valuable lessons, especially when it comes to what drives other people.

˚₊· ͟͟͞➳❥ They seem like a cat couple, and Eden is a cat person, but she also loves dogs (Teruko is a dog person). So, they have a small dog they adopted from a rescue shelter.

˚₊· ͟͟͞➳❥ They'll take in foster pets, but if they foster a dog, it has to be at least eight years old.

˚₊· ͟͟͞➳❥ Eventually, after marriage and therapy and preparation, they took foster kids, too. Specifically babies and teenagers above fourteen.

//So now that Chapter 2 is over, I suppose some of you are wondering how I feel about my theory being wrong after I spent a year and a half developing it.

//It was a long shot anyway, I never expected it to be right. There were bound to be reveals that undermined my predictions, and there were. I was hopeful for a last minute reveal, but it is what it is.

//For me, the biggest thing I was initially unhappy about was that Arei's death felt meaningless and emotionally manipulative, like they showed her tragic backstory and had her be friends with Eden, then killed her off so we'd be sad. It felt really cheap and hollow at first.

//I was even worried that last scene with her and David was only there for David's benefit, which felt like actual fridging to me. Mostly because I expected this to be all about him, rather than her.

//But with that ending, I actually think I like this better. Because it shows her role was not meaningless at all.

//Teruko was the only other one who stuck around to see Arei's emotional breakdown. Not only hearing about how she was bullied and mistreated...but that she didn't want to be the person she was.

//In the ending scene, Teruko admitted to MonoTV that she believed she was destined to be a terrible person because she had a terrible life and that everyone abandoned her. That it's not her fault she was cursed with terrible luck, so she doesn't have to feel bad. She was certain that she could never get close to people and that she had no choice but to be a cruel loner.

//She spent this whole chapter trying to convince herself that it's wrong to care, that it just gets you hurt, and that people like Eden are naive for believing in others.

//And Arei completely destroyed that idea. Someone who also had a shitty life and felt she had to be cruel to survive, but who actually wanted out and wanted to be like Eden. Someone who actually decided to embrace that idea and became friends with her.

//And I never expected Teruko to actually grieve like she did. She cried over losing not just Ace, Xander and Min, but Arei too. She even wondered if it was all her fault because they didn't abandon her. She pushed then all away for so long.

//I think, with Arei, she realized they actually had a lot more in common than she thought, right down to wanting to be better, but that she's gone now. She'll never have that connection.

//But I'd also like to think, if Arei were still around, she would've considered Teruko a friend. It doesn't matter what she's done or how she's acted, nobody's perfect and she doesn't have to be. She just has to try and be better.

//Levi jumped in front of a hail of bullets for her, Ace willingly went to his death to save Levi in front of her, but Arei reflected everything Teruko thought she had to be to survive and proved her wrong. Not only that, but proved her wrong enough to do what she said she'd never do for the people in this game: mourn.

//And if there's anything I'm glad I was right about, it was that.

Teruko a refreshing take with the Ultimate Lucky. Mostly because they actually do something with her luck that affects her character both positively and negatively. (Spoilers) Xander isn’t the first person who attempted to take her life and her backstory implies that it’s not her first time dealing with people like him. There are some parts of Teruko who genuinely wants to open up and make friends, but her distrust and paranoia overtakes her. Despair Time is about Teruko opening up again. (Con)

Yeah, that’s what makes her so interesting and compelling for a protagonist. We’ve never seen anything like this before. Usually protests are all like, “We’ll never commit murder and always be friends forever!”

But Teruko flips script and comes with, “Aye, woah, back up! I don’t trust you guys. You could kill be at any moment. Arms length motherfucker! We just met each other, who knows what’s going on in those brains of yours”

She has a genuine reason to feel this way and I’m sure as the story goes on she will eventually try and be able to trust people some more. It’s character arc. And I can’t wait to see how she progress later on down the line.

Xander: Enjoying the time he gets to spend with his new friends.

Min: Studying.

Arei: Calling everyone a pussy and telling them it's just a little rain.

David: Encouraging everyone to stay calm; the rain will be over soon! (Real David: Calling anyone who gets scared of the rain a pussy.)

Ace: Bitching about the rain.

Nico: Outside in the rain, looking for any stray animals who might have been caught in the storm.

Hu: Probably with Nico.

Eden: Working on her newest clock.

Veronika: Messing with the circuit breaker just to fuck with people.

Because I did teruwhitrei, like terurei, I struggled with headcanons. I wrote a short story instead! If you want headcanons, wait till the inbox is open and ask again, just specify!

Anyway, I love teruwhit. You're so right, anon.

"At least I got to hold hands with a pretty girl."

Jesus, that drove Teruko crazy. She chuckled at the time, but that cheesy one-lined stirred up butterflies she didn't even know were there in her stomach.

It wasn't like her to fall easily, no was it like her to fall for something so cliche. What had happened to her?

That was what she thought about when she went to meet Xander in the Computer Lab. Her guard was completely down, thinking about Whit, thinking about his story, how he made her blush.

You shouldn't be behaving so child-like.

Teruko reached out to push open the doors to the Computer Lab when she was spun around. Teruko startled, but didn't retaliate as her instincts once told her to.

Calmly, her eyes met with striking blue ones. After that, an awkward silence. God knows Teruko didn't want to pull away-- Whit's hands were clean and soft-- but she had to, "Is something wrong?"

"No," Whit said slowly, tilting his head. "What're you up to?"

"I was--" Teruko stopped herself. Hadn't Xander told her to keep it a secret? "I wanted to try the computers again. Thought maybe one of the CDS may have a hidden message."

"You're lying," Whit insisted. He grabbed her hand again, squeezing it tight. The gesture made her feel sad for not telling him the truth, but she trusted Xander.

"Teruko... I don't think you should go in there."

"What?" She looked at him, eyebrows furrowing. Though it was hard to be mad when he was this close. "That's not any of your business."

"Yeah, I know," Whit agrees, putting one hand up in surrender. "But I need you to trust my instincts. Please don't go in there. Tell him you forgot or something-- better yet," he started, tone going from serious to teasing. Whit yanks Teruko in the direction of the Movie Screening Room. "You can tell him we ambushed you!"

"W- w- wait, who's we?--"

Regarding the people being suspicious of Eden thing, it brings to mind a quote from The Incredibles 2: "Politicians don't understand people who do good simply because it's right. It makes 'em nervous." Anon would argue a lot of people in fandoms today are the same: they can't stomach the idea that there are genuinely kind people in the world, because that "makes them feel bad" for not being the same. So, Eden can't GENUINELY be a nice person, because then "they look bad in comparison".

//All of this is actually very interesting because Teruko and Arei both have very similar logic in Chapter 2:

//They have a similar sort of view that kindness, friendship and optimism are naive at best and actively harmful at worst. They've bought into the lie that reality is unilaterally terrible and everyone is an asshole out to get to you, and the only way to survive is to be an asshole right back.

//And it's definitely not for nothing, especially when you look at who says these things:

//It's a perspective I've seen in a lot of people who've been beaten down and dealt with so much awful shit in their lives that kindness feels almost alien to them.

//I've seen a lot of real people make those same conclusions, and they often decide that someone being kind is either too stupid to realize what they think they know, or they have ulterior motives.

//And like I keep saying, Despair Time is telling us that this perspective is wrong.

//Teruko's trust issues have only isolated her more and more from the others, and left her with far less information to work with than she would've had if she cooperated. Ace's antagonism and constant fights lead to him nearly getting killed. Arei actually did patch things up with Eden, and how that turned out...well, we can't really say for sure yet.

//It perplexes me how people have mostly latched onto the darkness and misery, and assume that this is some nihilistic misanthropic edgefest simply because the protagonist is the one who has to learn how to trust others. Or that David exists.

//Eden, meanwhile, is the person in the cast who best represents kindness and optimism, and instead of it being a two-dimensional platitude, it's her personal decision to be kind even though she knows how dark the world can be.

//I say all this as someone who has dealt with depression and anxiety for well over a decade at this point: Eden is absolutely right. Bottling up your emotions, withdrawing from others, and only thinking about yourself is a recipe for extremely unhealthy behavior.

//And approaching this from a writing perspective, if this were the grimdark story so many seem to think it is, characters like Eden usually die in the beginning to firmly establish the tone. They don't get scenes like this.

//Now, obviously I have no idea where the story is going to go from here, but I highly doubt that putting so much emphasis on Eden here is meant to signify that this is somehow going to prove Teruko right. On the contrary, I'm still certain this chapter will prove Teruko's decision not to trust anyone is far more dangerous and unhealthy.

//Either people didn't actually pay attention to what was happening or being said in the game itself, or they think that, because a character is kind, that somehow means they're going to be evil.

//I honestly think Eden is the least likely to be the culprit in this chapter. You can quote me on that and throw it in my face if I turn out to be wrong, but I'm sticking to it from here on out.

I do really enjoy Teruko's character and how different she is from your standard protagonist., but something I've repeatedly had people disagree with me on is the direction of her character. I've had people say her paranoia and cynicism is justified and that Ch. 2 will prove she's right...even though it has been going out of it's way to show she's not only going to the opposite extreme (not trusting ANYBODY in this) but she's isolating herself to the point that it's unhealthy. I’m not saying Chapter Two is and the rest of the story is going to prove that Teruko’ss pessimism and distrust of others is right. But she is justified to feel this way after what happened.

Teruko seems to have used and taking advantage of before, and so she did make attempts to be more trusting during the start of the Killing Game because; you might as well if you’re all going to be stick in the same boat. And what happens right when she gets opens herself up, she gets stabbed in the back by Xander!

…..Well it’s more of her stomach but you get the idea.

Now, feeling absolutely betrayed by the one person she would call a friend during this whole ordeal, and solely fighting for her innocence during the majority of the first class trial, Teruko’s gone back even deeper into her shell with added defenses. And again, who could blame her?

But Teruko does seem to want to trust others and form bonds again during her time playing with cactuses and talk with Eden. Her heart says, “To trust others and make friends” but her brain says, “Everytime you’ve done so, you’ve been hurt. So just stop altogether” And I’m positive little by little her shell will start to crack overtime and learn to be trusting again. It’s only a matter of time.
