Spring Hill High, Freshman Year, 7 years ago.

A 14K diamond necklace around her neck and a 24K pleated gold brooch on her uniform blazer. Silky brown hair all the way to her lower back always straightened, never a hair out of place. All eyes stared at her as she walked down the school’s corridor. She had a small, polite smile and sat near the front of the auditorium. Whispers could be heard all around her.

‘Is that Ning Yi Zhuo? Isn’t her family, like, super rich?’

‘Yeah! I heard her family signal-handily fund and build half of the school’

‘No wonder she’s so pretty; she can afford it’

Ningning was a known name around town; she was popular everywhere she went. She was popular, but not liked.

Ningning learned the hard way that to keep her life happy, she needed to keep a small circle. At the moment, this circle had a total of 0 members. That was pretty small!

It’s not that she didn’t enjoy the company—quite the contrary—but it was hard to see who wanted her for her friendship and who wanted her for money.

To keep things at bay, she’d wave and have small talk with anyone who asked, but when it came to hanging out outside of school, she’d always refused. Going to the mall or to dinner always brought up the subject of money. Since Ningning had an abundance of money, her friends always felt entitled to it just because they were friends with her. It would start arguments when she refused to pay for everything, thus ending her friendships. Friendships that were her everything fell apart so easily. Had anyone actually wanted to be friends with her? Or did they just want her money? It was a story that repeated itself over and over, but that was going to stop in high school; she’d keep her distance from everyone. It was her goal.

That is until a certain raven-haired boy came creeping into her life.

"Yeonjun, Park Yeonjun. And who do I have the honor of speaking too?"

Unlucky for Ningning, she had become chemistry lab partners with the most social boy in all of Spring Hill High.

"I’m surprised you don’t know. It’s Ning Yi Zhuo, but just call me Ningning."

"Ning Yi Zhuo, huh? It does sound familiar. Well, what does it matter? You’re stuck with me all year, Ningning; get used to seeing this pretty face all day." Ningning rolled her eyes and gave him a small smile.

"Aw, come on, princess, I can spot a fake smile from miles away. You don’t have to pretend to like me. It’s fine if you don’t; I’ll convince you otherwise eventually." Ningning’s smile didn’t drop, but she did feel herself giggle. It had been a while since she had genuinely laughed at someone’s joke. She had to stop herself, though. Ningning couldn’t get close to someone else. But it’s just one class a day with him. There was no way she’d become friends with Yeonjun.

And Ningning was right. She didn’t become friends with Yeonjun. They became so much more than that.

Meeting Yeonjun brought Ningning into a whole new world. One filled with adventure and curiosity. One where she didn’t have to force herself to be introverted for the sake of her happiness, she could be extroverted and happy without fear.

Day after day, he would come into class and tell her wild stories, half of which Ningning had been certain were fake, but that he only told her so he could see her smile. And laugh. Yeonjun always made her laugh.

One day, while walking out of the cafeteria on her way to eat her lunch outside, Ningning was stopped by two girls. One had long, flowing brown hair with a mole under her eye.

"Heard you’re getting chummy with our Yeonjun?" Both girls stared at Ningning, waiting for a response. She awkwardly shifted her eyes in confusion, but before she got the chance to explain herself, the other girl next to her with bangs began to laugh.

"Wonyoung, come on! You’re scaring her! Listen, she’s kidding. We don’t care what’s going on with you and Yeonjun; just know he won’t shut up about you."

"Ugh, it’s so annoying; you’re all he talks about, Ning. Just go out with him so we can have lunch in peace! Right, Aeri?" The girl with bangs, Aeri, nodded her head and giggled.

Ningning blushed at the thought.

"Aw, are you shy? Tell you this: Let’s go out together as a group. You could get a feel for him and see if you like him before making a move. I’m sure you’ll have fun!" Ningning didn’t want to go out with these strangers, but she did want to go out with Yeonjun. So she agreed, and it was the best decision she had ever made.

The group of four first went roller skating. It was Ninging’s first time ever rollerskating, and she learned the hard way that it wasn’t easy to grasp on the first try. With each fall came further frustration from Ningning. All she could do was watch as her friends laughed and had fun. While she lay on the floor alone, After falling down for the fifth time, she saw a hand extended out to her.

"Here, grab on to me. It’ll be easier this way; if we both fall, we fall together! Totes less embarrassing." Ningning held onto Giselle tightly, and the two of them skated together. Aeri never left Ninging’s side the whole afternoon, and if she fell, then Aeri fell right with her. It was comforting. Is this what genuine friendship is like?

After hours of skating, everyone was beat and decided to have lunch. Banter and jokes flew around the table; Wonyoung even told some embarrassing stories about Yeonjun. It was a blast! Once the check finally came, Ningning felt shivers down her spine. This is when the argument always happened. Were these new-found friends going to dump the check on her? Were they going to use her like everyone else did?

"I got it covered; it’s on me, babes!" Aeri called out.

"Oh, I can pay for my..."

"Nah, don’t worry about it; I have money for days." It was true that the Uchinaga family was rich.

"Just let the sugar mommy pay for our lunch; it’s the least she can do for forcing you here today!" Yeonjun shined a bright smile at Ningning and winked at Giselle.

"Aw, you think of me as a mother?"

Ningning laughed. Maybe this friendship wouldn’t be so bad. Maybe she’d finally found people who liked her, for her.

Spring Hill High, Junior Year

Ningning started her day like no other. She got dressed and ready for school. She had her personal chef make her breakfast, and she got in her personal driver's car. It was not a typical day for anyone else, but for Ningning, this was normal.

It wasn’t until she heard frantic whispering all around the halls at school that she knew something had happened. Before she got the chance to look for her friends, she was dragged by her arm into the janitor’s closet. After adjusting to the dim lighting of the room, Ningning realized it was her friend Wonyoung who dragged her in.

"Listen, I’m going to tell you something. You gotta promise me you won’t freak out."

"Wony, you’re scaring me; what’s up?"

"Ok, um, so yesterday I was in student council helping plan for Spirit week, and someone needed to bring the printed setlist to the principal's office. I volunteered, of course, since I hate being on student council. The president’s always so creepy and so boring. You know he went on a 10-minute tangent about-"

"Wonyoung, focus."

"Right, sorry. I got everything together and made my way to the principal's office, but on my way there, I heard someone making out at the bottom of the fourth-floor staircase. Anytime I hear love in the air, I just have to investigate! So, I made my way up and hid to see if I could get a good look at the lovebirds, and...

"And…"

"Ningning, it was Giselle and Yeonjun."

Ningning’s world had fallen apart. Her eyes quickly welled up with tears, while her brain still hadn’t fully comprehended the conversation. Her best friend and her boyfriend were fucking?

Her happiness, which she had tried so hard to keep, had been shattered. There are no good people in this world. At least not to Ningning. Not anymore.

"You fucked Giselle?" Ningning’s voice roared throughout the hallway. Her targets were right in sight.

"Ning, what are you talking about?"

"Oh, don’t act all innocent. I thought we were friends. I trusted you. Am I just someone you can toy with until you don’t want me anymore? Or were you just using me to get close to Yeonjun? Be honest."

“Ningning, I don’t know-“

"Wonyoung’s telling the truth, Babe. I’m so sorry. Just give it up, Giselle; it’s true. We messed around behind Ning’s back." Yeonjun looked sorrowful as he admitted to his "infidelity".

Giselle’s face had been twisted and turned in confusion. But Ningning didn’t give her the chance to speak. Why had Yeonjun confessed to something that didn’t take place? Why wasn’t Ningning listening to her?

"We’re so done. I’ll make sure you pay for this. You’ll regret ever crossing Ning Yi Zhuo."

On the first day of kindergarten, Mike does meet Will on the swing sets and asks him to be his friend - except, this Will is an old man. A White-haired, reading-glass-wearing Will who then vanishes after “I’d like that very much, Mike” with no hint of how he’d known his name.

What follows is Mike, living his life in the right order, thank you, visited by Will’s of past and future. It’s a fun little secret, just the two of them, and Mike doesn’t mind that Will, his Will, never wants to talk about it. Until he does.

Mike held his breath, as the footsteps got closer—no way Will could’ve found him that fast—but then a man’s face peeked its head into the tree hollow and Mike yelped, hitting his head against the wood, and holding in a word his mom told him not to say.

“Oops,” said the man. “Sorry about that. Good hiding spot, by the way.”

Mike looked up and found himself face-to-face with green eyes and a familiar brown mole and before he even knew what he was doing, surged out of the tree hollow with a rush of desperation. “You!” he said, trying to look for all the similarities and differences. He’d wondered for months if he’d imagined the whole thing. “You, you’re—”

The man laughed a familiar laugh, light reflecting off his glasses. The roots of his hair were starting to whiten, and Mike could see the old man he would become, sitting on the swing set, and even scarier, Mike could see the rough outline of his best friend in the entire world. “Will.”

“Hi, Mike.” “Explain.”

The older Will tilted his head. “Explain what?”

Mike hit his head again, climbing his way out of the stupid tree, panting and knowing that—from his memory, anyway—they didn’t have much time. “Explain—this. How do you—how do you do it? How do you keep finding me?”

“Have you asked Will?” asked Will, tilting his head towards him, and Mike flushed.

“No,” said Mike. “I didn’t—I didn’t know if it was real. I was waiting, though. I knew you’d come back, I knew it.”

Older Will’s face softened into something that Mike hoped was fondness. “Okay,” he said. “Okay, I can explain it. I can try, anyway. It’s not like there’s a book, or anything.”

“Did anyone explain it to you?”

“A little bit,” said Will, a faraway expression in his eyes. “I’ll try to do a better job, though. But—yeah, it’s me. I’m Will. Just an older version of the Will you already know. And you’ve met other versions of me, too. And you’ll keep meeting them.”

“Why?” whispered Mike. “Why me?”

“We’re connected,” said Will, settling down into the limp, September leaves and crossing his legs. It was a little silly, but Mike sat the same way. “You and me. I don’t know why, exactly. Or how. But we are.”

“So you’ll keep visiting,” said Mike. “Just me?”

“Just you.”

TSA agents handles the personal belongings and touch the bodies of millions of fliers. Part time agents don't get health-insurance. If they think they might have Covid-19, they might not be able to afford to seek care.

TSA chief David Pekoske told Congress that the Trump administration's decision to take away health-care from part time TSA employees was a good one: "I have no intention of restoring health care coverage for part-time workers. I think that was a good decision."

About 100 TSA agents have been sent home after it was believed they came into contact with Covid-19. The TSA will not try to track down passengers who also might have come into contact with sick people.

A former top Cigna exec rebuts Joe Biden's healthcare FUD (permalink)

In a recent and important essay, Maria Farrell wrote about the road-to-Damascus conversions that ex-techies are having in which they recant the damaging product design work they did and begin to campaign against their former employers.

Farrell noted that these techies had missed an important step in their transformation from venal attention mercenaries to noble attention freedom-fighters: they had yet to hit bottom, to truly repent their earlier sins.

They skipped like stones over the waters of privilege, and never sank, unlike so many of their victims.

Contrast those journeys with that of Wendell Potter, the former Cigna exec turned whistleblower, who has devoted decades of his life to revealing dirty tricks and lies. Potter campaigns tirelessly – and shrewdly – for Medicare for All, and is always at pains to point out that the anti-M4A talking points his adversaries parrots were all developed by him, when he was on the wrong side of history.

Take this thread, rebutting Joe Biden's FUD about M4A, delivered in the midst of a pandemic that has been worsened by the 77 million un- and underinsured people who can't get care or screening and disproportionately work in food-service and cleaning.

As Potter points out, Biden's assertion that M4A costs $35T is just a lie. Once you factor in the savings of not paying for private healthcare, M4A SAVES at least $450B/year.

Biden's plan to cap premiums on a public option at 8.5% of your income is more than double what M4A would cost you. The corporate plans Biden lionizes shackle good workers to bad employers, and put millions at risk of having their care arbitrarily withdrawn or limited. And, of course, private care doesn't cover much. Surprise bills, deductibles, co-pays, out-of-pockets… Our plan – a blue-chip employer's top-of-the-line Cigna plan – costs us $24K/year.

We're rationing our family's health care because in addition to the $20K/year we're paying out of pocket, Cigna refused to cover a pain procedure that my doc – the most-cited pain doc working in California, who runs a major university pain clinic – says I would benefit from. That procedure might let me get a good night's sleep for the first time in 15 years and allow me to live a more normal, pain-free life. But because Cigna won't cover it, it would cost $55K, which we do not have. So I'm foregoing it.

I've been reading Beth Mole's outstanding science journalism for many years and I've always admired it, but even by the high standards of a Beth Mole explainer, this soup-to-nuts Covid-19 explainer is just spectacularly good work.

Mole's calm and comprehensive coverage relies on the most reliable sources and turns the results of our best evidence-based studies into a coherent narrative, from the disease's origins to its spread to its symptoms to its resolution.

Just this symptom-by-symptom breakdown was enormously informative and filled in a huge gap that I had previously mentally signposted as "flu-like".

According to data from nearly 56,000 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients in China, the rundown of common symptoms went as follows:

88 percent had a fever

68 percent had a dry cough

38 percent had fatigue

33 percent coughed up phlegm

19 percent had shortness of breath

15 percent had joint or muscle pain

14 percent had a sore throat

14 percent headache

11 percent had chills

5 percent had nausea or vomiting

5 percent had nasal congestion

4 percent had diarrhea

Less than one percent coughed up blood or blood-stained mucus

Less than one percent had watery eyes

Boeing is even worse at financial engineering than they are at aircraft engineering (permalink)

Boeing is experiencing a potentially terminal slump. Between losses due to its 737 Max scandal (a self-inflicted injury), and the dropoff in travel during the pandemic, it has had to draw down its entire line of credit and institute a hiring freeze.

Obviously, Boeing can't be blamed for the pandemic.

But you know what is absolutely the company's fault? Its financial engineering.

Since 2013, Boeing squandered $43 billion on stock buybacks, whose sole purpose was to goose its share-price.

As Wolf Richter writes, Boeing, this "master of financial engineering – instead of aircraft engineering – blew, wasted, and incinerated $43.4 billion on buying back its own shares."

The company just had to borrow $13.825B. Its shares are down 46% since March 2019.

The entire company – a jewel of American industry – might not survive, because it focused on short-term enrichment of shareholders, rather than safe aircraft or financial prudence.

Reality has a well-known anti-capitalist bias, part MMMLVII.

Senate Republicans kill emergency sick leave during pandemic (permalink)

Senate Republicans have killed emergency sick leave legislation, a move that will force millions of low-waged cleaning and food-service workers to choose between homelessness and potentially spreading Covid-19.

The GOP says that paid sick leave will endanger the fragile bottom lines of employers and also that the feds have no money to pay for such a thing – despite finding it easy to blow $2.3 trillion on tax-cuts for the super-rich.

Refusing to help poor Americans stay fed and sheltered isn't just cruel, it's lethally reckless, and it demonstrates the moral hazard of oligarchic capitalism. Subsidizing sick-leave would merely afford survival to millions of Americans, after all.

Whereas the crisis that this will produce – a pandemic that is made worse and longer – will cost billions more, but that money will go to the donor-class, the Beltway Bandits whose cost-plus, no-bid contracts will transfer even more money from the poor to the wealthy.

It's disaster capitalism at its worst. The Senate GOP is dooming you and everyone you love to the risk of disease and death because preventing that risk would help millions of poor people, whereas creating the risk helps a handful of ultrarich people.

The EU's new Right to Repair rules finally come for electronics (permalink)

The EU Commission's latest "Circular Economy Action Plan" has enormous significance for Right to Repair and electronics.

In addition to a host of eminently sensible, long overdue measures (bans on single use items and the destruction of unsold goods), there's a renewed emphasis on electronics, through the "Circular Electronics Initiative".

Currently writing: I'm rewriting a short story, "The Canadian Miracle," for MIT Tech Review. It's a story set in the world of my next novel, "The Lost Cause," a post-GND novel about truth and reconciliation. I'm also working on "Baby Twitter," a piece of design fiction also set in The Lost Cause's prehistory, for a British think-tank. I'm getting geared up to start work on the novel afterwards.

Currently reading: Just started Lauren Beukes's forthcoming Afterland: it's Y the Last Man plus plus, and two chapters in, it's amazeballs. Last month, I finished Andrea Bernstein's "American Oligarchs"; it's a magnificent history of the Kushner and Trump families, showing how they cheated, stole and lied their way into power. I'm getting really into Anna Weiner's memoir about tech, "Uncanny Valley." I just loaded Matt Stoller's "Goliath" onto my underwater MP3 player and I'm listening to it as I swim laps.

“That’s not how we speak to her,” Sakura stated. And though her voice was warm, venom oozed from her smile. She got out of her seat. Madara took a step back, gesturing with mock chivalry as Sakura opened the door. Sticking her head out, she called, “Sai?”

It took a moment. Then, Sai’s head popped around the corner. His gaze wary as he listened for a disturbance upstairs.

“Drinks?” she mouthed, miming taking a sip out of one.

“Yeah, Mama,” he replied, disappearing again. Sakura slipped back into the room. She wrinkled her nose at Madara as if she had stepped in a particularly large pile of dog shit. But then she took a step closer. She grabbed his tie. Fist wrinkling the red silk. Teeth gleaming as she stared up at him.

“That’s not how we fucking speak to her, sik si gau,” Sakura repeated. Voice tapering off in a hiss. Madara’s eyes twinkled. His grin widening.

“My apologies, Tenten-san,” Madara said, staring directly at Sakura.

“Diu lei lo mo,” muttered Tenten in return. And Sakura had uttered the phrase often enough that Madara knew what it meant by now. He raised an eyebrow at her. Frown deepening, Sakura reached into his jacket to pull the revolver from his holster. She shoved him back with one hand. Passed Tenten the confiscated gun as she made her way back to her seat.

Itachi sighed.

“I’m not in the mood for wine. I’ll be right back,” he announced.

Sakura’s eyes followed him as he stepped out of the room. Listening for his steady gait down the stairs. As soon as the door shut, Madara looked to her. Practically leering.

“So? Has he taken a bite out of you yet?” Madara questioned. Tenten’s jaw tightened. But Sakura almost smiled, leaning back in her seat. Her tongue poked out, licking the corner of her mouth.

“That’s not how this goes, Madara. You know that,” she replied.

Sakura pulled her cigarette out. Pinched it between two of her fingers. Smoke poured out her throat like it was a chimney. And she watched Madara through the haze. Eyes narrowed.

“Are you really not going to sit?” she prompted, gesturing to the empty couch across from her. Madara crossed his arms behind his back. Rocking on the balls of his feet.

“I don’t know. I get the feeling that when I sit, a knife is going to shoot out of the cushions and stab me in the ass,” he responded.

Sakura didn’t smile.

“Don’t be crude,” she simply said.

So Madara, hedging and muttering, went to finally have a seat. He draped his arm over the back of the sofa. Pressing down on the cushion with his palm.

“Not bad. Maybe I should get one for my place,” he commented.

Sakura’s eyes only narrowed. She adjusted the front of her dress. Her thumb dipping into her cleavage to fiddle with the neckline.

A few minutes later, feet clomped up the stairs again. There were three sharp knocks.

“Come in,” Sakura said. She flicked ash off the end of her cigarette. Into the ceramic dish on the coffee table. And Sai entered carrying a large silver tray. He set it down on the desk. On it was a champagne bucket filled with ice. Nestled between the cubes was a black bottle of champagne with a gold label. There was also a small glass of whiskey, which Sai handed over to Madara without greeting.

Itachi entered the room after Sai. Closing the door behind him with his foot. A vodka tonic in each hand. Little slices of lime floating in the drinks. He paused by the desk to drain one of the glasses and place it on the tray. And he settled in the vacant loveseat with his drink.

“Did I miss anything?” asked Itachi. Sakura raised her cigarette back up to her mouth. Paused. Looked him in the eyes.

“Your uncle is a piece of shit,” she informed him. Like he wasn’t in the room with them. Itachi put his elbow up on the armrest.

“Oh, I’m aware,” he replied in the same tone.

Madara sighed. “Kids these days. No respect for their elders.” He lifted the whiskey to his nose, inhaling deeply.

The cork popped out of the champagne. Sai poured three glasses. The first went to Sakura, who winked at him. The second went to Tenten. The third, Sai took a sip of for himself.

Madara began lifting the whiskey to his lips. Paused. Eyes darting to Sakura who left her champagne on the edge of the coffee table.

“You take the first sip,” he said, holding the glass out to her. Sakura wasn’t surprised. But she still scoffed, rubbing her thumb across her lip.

“You think I would ruin a 14-year old single malt by poisoning it?”

But she still reached out to take his drink. She took a sip. Madara’s eyes were glued to her throat. Watching her swallow. And when she handed the glass back, he seized her wrist. Pulling her face close.

“Let me smell. You can’t fool me, Sakura,” he demanded.

Sakura blew into his face. The smell of whiskey spicy on her breath. Only then did Madara release her. Settling back in his seat, all smiles again.

“Good,” he said.

And just to rub it in her face, he licked the lipstick mark she had left on the glass before he took a drink. Sakura rolled her eyes as she took a drag of her cigarette.

“So, why did I find your shitty little brother dealing drugs in Hong Kong?” demanded Sakura. Pointing with her cigarette toward Obito. And Madara turned to look at Obito, as if he had forgotten he was there. He grinned.

“Ah. That? I’m surprised it took you so long to figure that out,” Madara commented.

“Where’s the real Red Eyes Chiu?” asked Sakura. Madara shrugged.

“He’s dead. Been dead for like- what-” Madara turned to look at Obito again, “Six years?”

“Eight years,” Obito corrected, staring straight ahead. The lines in his face etched hard and deep.

“I killed him when he was just some little street rat. Had Obito take on his identity. Wasn’t hard. They’re both ugly little fuckers. Kind of look the same if you squint,” Madara chuckled. Obito didn’t laugh along with him.

“To spy?” Sakura probed. Madara shrugged.

“Sort of. There was opportunity in the 24K. Heard that some lunatic named Orochimaru was planning something ugly. And I was always curious about expanding into China,” Madara drawled. Sakura’s lips tightened into a line. She seeped smoke from between her teeth.

“I saw instability. Knew I might be able to use it. So I sent Obito undercover. Just wish he’d tried a little harder in school to actually learn Cantonese. That was your undoing, wasn’t it?” Madara said, almost laughing. Obito grit his teeth.

“So he wasn’t planted to spy on me specifically,” Sakura mused. And Madara nodded.

“Although, I did have the pleasure of making your acquaintance around then. I was curious to see what would happen if I stabbed that man. And I ended up stabbing you instead,” Madara laughed. His tone light.

“I don’t know if I would use the word ‘pleasure’,” replied Sakura, dryly. She fiddled with the front of her dress again.

Itachi took a gulp of his drink. The ice tinkling together in the glass. And that drew Madara’s gaze.

“So yeah, you found my little mole. But is it really worth bringing up to that chairman of yours? Are you really going to start an all-out war with the yakuza? Is it worth it?” Madara scoffed. He stared directly at Itachi as he spoke. He downed the rest of his drink. Setting the glass down a little too hard on the coffee table. And then he grinned.

“And why’re you here, nephew? You here to slap me on the wrist?” he challenged. Itachi stared back at him, his expression flat.

Sakura plucked her cigarette from her mouth. Let it rest between her middle and ring finger as she reached for the flute of champagne. Madara blinked.

“Shit. Maybe I drank that too fast. That’s strong,” he remarked.

“I told you. That was 14-year old single malt. You should have savored it,” Sakura replied, almost smiling again. She touched her lower lip and examined her thumb. Like she was checking to see if her lipstick had smudged. But her finger came away clean.

She held her hand out. Sai came forward to hand her another glass of whiskey. She took a sip of it before Madara could ask again. He barely grunted an acknowledgement as she handed him the drink. And then she sipped her champagne, eyeing him over the rim of the glass. Dropped her cigarette into what remained in the flute. Listening to it die with a faint sizzle.

“I invited the Kumicho here as a gentle reminder to you, Madara. Although you broke off to become the Kobe-Uchiha-gumi all those years ago, you are still Uchiha’s. Don’t you still have to answer to him as your aniki?” Sakura remarked. At this, Madara’s face darkened. He tossed back the whiskey in one gulp. Hissing between his teeth as he slammed it down on the coffee table.

He pointed directly at Itachi. “You’re just my aniki’s kid. I don’t owe you shit. I should have been the Kumicho. Not you.”

Itachi arched an eyebrow.

“And yet here we sit, Uncle. One of is the Kumicho. And one of us isn’t,” he replied. Drawing out his words. Lengthening the syllables. Madara’s lip curled.

“You should be thankful, Uncle,” Itachi went on, “My father knew you wouldn’t be satisfied pledging loyalty to me. So he gave you Kobe. Like when you distract a child throwing a tantrum with candy.”

Madara gripped the arm of the sofa. His eyes were a little unsteady. Like he was having trouble focusing.

“You little shit,” growled Madara.

“My, my,” sighed Sakura. She got out of her seat. She stepped over to Madara. Her shadow falling across his face and neck. She deposited herself in his lap, cupping his cheek with her left hand.

She smiled.

“Now, Madara, be nice. You know I hate it when my guests fight,” she cooed.

“Although, I’m a little inclined to take your nephew’s side. Since he hasn’t tried to drug me and fuck me while I’m unconscious,” she added. Eyes sharpening.

“I did apologize for that the last time I saw you. Remember? After you strangled me?” Madara sighed, almost sounding bored.

“You did,” she agreed. “You told me that you received money from Yakushi Kabuto to do that.”

“That’s the story,” Madara agreed, leaning his head against the sofa. But then he lifted it again.

“I also apologized for stabbing you,” he went on.

“You did,” she agreed again. She took his face in both her hands. Stroking down his cheeks. The sides of his neck. Hands resting on his shoulders.

“You most certainly did. But... there’s just one little problem with all of that,” Sakura pointed out. Madara’s eyes narrowed.

“And what’s that?”

He watched as Sakura slipped her thumb into the front of her dress. Down between her cleavage. It emerged dusted with white powder. A pellet sticking to the side. Sakura stuck her thumb in her mouth, and before he could react, she brought her mouth down his. Tongue darting past his lips. The bitter taste of almonds spreading over his palette.

Sakura pulled away, her eyes fluttering open. A smile curling the corners of her mouth.

“I’m still mad about all that,” she told him.

“What the fuck was that?” Madara sputtered. His mouth smeared bright red. His head whipped around when Tenten suddenly stood. She reached into the inner pocket of her blazer to pull out a thin case. When she popped the lid, two syringes were nestled inside, along with two glass bottles. She pulled out one of the needles, plunging it into the top of one of the bottles. Filled it halfway. Filled it up the rest of the way with what was in the other bottle. She flicked her nail against the side of the syringe.

“Sodium nitrite and sodium thiosulfate,” Sakura said. She held her forearm out.

Tenten crossed the room to grasp Sakura’s wrist. She plunged the tip into Sakura’s forearm. Injecting the contents of the needle directly into her bloodstream. A few droplets of blood seeped out when Tenten removed the needle.

“Common antidotes to cyanide poisoning,” Sakura added when Madara didn’t react.

“Cyanide?” he repeated. Eyes blazing, he reached out a clawed hand for Sakura’s throat. But she held up her finger.

“Ah. I wouldn’t if I were you. Because I have enough antidote for you too. Although, you’ve had a lot more than me, so you’ll want it quick before it kicks in,” Sakura told him.

Madara’s gaze flickered from her to the two empty whiskey glasses. He bared his teeth. Chest rising and falling too fast.

“You fucking bitch.”

Sakura laughed.

“So,” she then said, clapping her hands onto his shoulders, “I’ll give you the antidote as long as our Kumicho answers a question for me.”

She twisted her head to look at Itachi. Who hadn’t stirred from his seat. HIs eyes gleaming in a strange way as he watched her.

“What question is that, Jing-Mei?” Itachi queried. His voice like silk.

“Should I let your uncle live or should I let him die?”

Itachi didn’t hesitate.

“I don’t need a dog that isn’t loyal to me,” he uttered. And he finished off his vodka tonic. Wiping his mouth on the back of his hand. He leaned forward. Elbows on his knees. Like he was preparing to watch a particularly interesting movie.

Sakura beamed.

“You never disappoint me, Kumicho,” she sighed.

Turning back to Madara, she pressed a kiss to his cheek. Leaving another red mark. His lips were beginning to turn blue, breath coming in shallow pants. Sakura climbed off of him, easily twisting out of his weakening grasp.

Itachi held his hand out to her. She took it, let Itachi pull her into his lap instead. His arms wrapping around her waist.

They said nothing else as they watched Madara asphyxiate. His hands clutching at his throat as he choked on nothing. Eyes rolling back into his skull. It was a quiet, but ugly way to go. Somehow, Sakura had always imagined Madara going out in a fiery explosion of some kind. This subdued ending was worse, somehow. She tilted her head to one side as she watched him convulse.

“This is going to cause problems,” sighed Itachi. Like he had chipped a nail or accidentally cracked his phone screen. Sakura ran her fingers through the end of his ponytail.

“You could have stopped me,” Sakura pointed out. But Itachi clucked his tongue.

“But he was so irritating,” he sighed, “He would’ve ended up trying to kill me eventually.”

“I could make some phone calls. Frame the Inuzuka-kai,” Itachi then thought out loud. Sakura wrinkled her nose.

“I shot Inuzuka Kiba in the hands not too long ago. I’d feel a little bad throwing this at him so soon,” Sakura responded, looking down at her nails. “Besides, I’m not letting someone else take credit for all my hard work. Picasso didn’t sign his paintings with someone else’s name.”

Sakura glanced over at Sai, who was pouring Tenten another glass of champagne.

“Sai lo, let’s make this all pretty and send him over to Uncle Hashirama. You were recording everything, right?” she asked.

Sai nudged the collar of his shirt aside to reveal a microphone and a wire.

“Yeah, Boss. You want him in chunks or ribbons?” he asked, already rolling up his sleeves.

“Send Uncle the head. I don’t really care what you do with the rest,” answered Sakura. Sai nodded. But Tenten jabbed her thumb at Obito still sitting in the chair. He was quite still. Expression stony. Quiet, despite what he had just witnessed.

“What about this one?” she inquired.

“Are you angry that I killed your brother?” asked Sakura. She already knew what his answer would be.

“Yes,” Obito ground out. His glare focused on the ground.

“Do you think I was wrong to kill him?” she went on.

“No,” Obito replied.

“Hm...” purred Sakura, considering him. And then she looked at Itachi.

“Kumicho, let me borrow this one. I think he’ll be useful.” It was worded like a request, but it wasn’t.

Itachi dipped his head. “Of course.”

Top 10 bias list

I was tagged by @teodoraherman and it’s so hard to decide, but here we go. THERE IS NO PARTICULAR ORDER.

JinJin (ASTRO): i’m the softest when it comes to him. squealing even when i only hear his name. such a precious cinammon roll that deserves so much more appreciation. such a talented human being. a great leader. puts others as his priority and i love him to the moon and back. truly a blessing in my life and i’ve never taken him for granted. his rabbit smile saved me from misery and his underlip mole is probably the cutest thing i’ve ever witnessed. i could write entire essays about him and how much he means to me but we don’t have time for that. definitely my ult bg bias.

Sana (TWICE) : a real life princess. i still remember how i fell in love with her while watching Twice Private Life, she melted my heart right away. but can we talk ABOUT HER LOVE FOR GIRLS??? (especially for Eunha) she is a precious angel, queen of talent and visual and starting trends in S.K. i’m head over heels when it comes to her.

Wheein (MAMAMOO): way before i was stanning MMM, i saw a picture of her and didn’t know who she was but i was so attracted by her unique facial features. almost 2 years later, here i am, a Wheein stan. i don’t have enough space to write about how talented she is and how much i love her. my first ever ult gg bias. i’d describe her as the love of my life and the dimple queen. ( lately i’ve been an unloyal ass, cuz Hyejin And Byulie have been wrecking me).

YoungK - Brian (DAY6) : i don’t think i respect an artist more than i respect him. just the fact that he can study and go to uni while he has monthly comebacks and midterms , it’s unbelievable. i can barely cope with 2 exams. his (eye) smile can light up any room tbh and his bromance with Terry is so precious. his english is so precious. had a dream with him once and we were just hanging out and i asked him about the life in Toronto and he seemed like such a close friend, i don’t think i ever woke up that happy. a passionate musician , AH-MA-ZING LYRICIST, he basically sees the world as a huge poem. an overall happy bubble that just wants to live his dream and is already doing that.

Ken ( VIXX): my second ever kpop bias, it was love at first sight. i remember randomly finding the “ Eternity” m/v and how i instantely fell in love with the song and the group. spotted him and the rest is history. he is definitely the king of fanservice. he loves starlights with a passion. holds a meaningful place in my heart. a gorgeous talented man that deserves SO MUCH MORE RECOGNITION, IT’S SAD!!!!

LE (EXID): she is an inspiration. a multitasking queen, that not only serves HQ viSUALS , she comes with a whole package: rapping, singing, dancing AND composing/producing. her flow is unbelievable and people are still sleeping on her, which is sad. i love her so much, she is a true beauty, inside and out.

Seunghee ( OH MY GIRL): whenever there is something involving Oh my Girl, i get as soft as a mochi because these girls are such angels and their music is INCREDIBLE. Seunghee is such a talented vocalist, she blows me away every. single. time. and the fact that she is doing her best to learn English BY WATCHING MOVIES, so she can communicate with the intl Miracles, it melts my heart. also, Twice × OMG interactions and admiration moments are my favourite.

Gahyeon (Dreamcatcher): been stanning since debut, unique concepts and SYNCRONISATION. the cute maknae caught my eye on the Asc episode and i’m still in process of knowing her and the group as a whole. dope songs, DOPE COVERS, dope choreo, dope personalities.

Jimin Park (15&) : i have no words for her. she is incredible in absolutely everything she does, she is incredibly funny , her talent is from outerspace. jyp needs to wake the fuck up and promote her better. a true artist and one of the idols i really wanna befriend in real life. beauty from head-to-toe. much love for her.

Siyeon ( PRISTIN) : a fuckboy in the body of a girl. she is g a y AF and she just slays on stage. her presence is stunning and queen of “Annyeong!”. took 8 years of training to debut and here she is slaying as a rookie.

I have to remember other biases as important as the 10 i just reminded: Seulgi (RED VELVET), Suho (EXO), Rosé (BLACKPINK) , Sojin( Girl’s Day), Chungha (soloist), Jessi (soloist) ,Yeoreum (WJSN), Eunha (Gfriend), Changsub (BTOB), Vernon,DK,Joshua (SEVENTEEN), Baekho (Nu'est), Cory (24K), Jooheon ( MONSTA X) Jimin (BTS), Yongguk (BAP) etc. also, there are groups where i can’t choose a bias ( SHINEE) and groups that i didn’t get to stan even though i love their songs.
