#2758 - Araucaria araucana - Monkey-Puzzle 

Clearly a cultivated specimen, but that profile is unmistakable.

First described as Pinus araucana by Jesuit priest, linguist, and naturalist (and early evolutionary theorist) Juan Ignacio Molina in 1782. In 1797, Spanish botanist José Antonio Pavón Jiménez named it Araucaria imbricata - illegitimate, as it didn't use Molina's older araucana. Eventually, in 1873, after several further redescriptions, German botanist Karl Koch published the combination Araucaria araucana, which seems to have stuck. The binomial is derived from the local Araucanians who collected the nuts.

A living fossil from the Central-southern slopes of the Andes, and like the Sequoia an endangered species. Logging, forest fires, and grazing are the biggest threats.

Trees can be over 40m in height, and live for over 1300 years. The triangular, scale-like leaves themselves have an average age of 24 years.

In its home range the long-haired grass mouse Abrothrix longipilis is the main seed disperser, burying seeds whole in locations favorable for germination.

The oldest fossil records of Araucariaceae are from the Early Jurassic, if not earlier. Early representatives of Araucaria were widespread across both hemispheres by the Middle Jurassic.

A popular ornamental conifer everywhere the climate suits it and it has room to grow - Cornwall has a excellent genetic diversity of the plant thanks to the number of seedlings and seeds sent home by miners after the Cornish diaspora.

Monkey Puzzle Tree Update

The first chapter of the second work Monkey Puzzle Tree is up!

Summary: Alfie and Edna are married. There are so many surprises in store that neither of them have time to think of what it will mean when the surprises stop being good.

Alfie gave her a look, his brows raised and they both laughed. “Anna’s been on the sauce a bit, eh? Are you ready?”

Edna put her arm through his and Alfie pushed open the door. Everyone was cheering so loud Edna couldn’t hear a word. She did cry just a little bit, just because it would have made Mama and Papa so happy to be here, throwing handfuls of rice and confetti and rose petals along with everyone else, and maybe a small part of her wanted Cece to know that her dress was better, but mostly the tears were because she wanted her family there and they weren’t.

Alfie opened the car door for her and she slid in, holding her skirt close until she was sat down so it wouldn’t wrinkle. Alfie slid in after her and they were both laughing as Ishmael started the car and they started pulling things out of each other’s hair and brushing off each other’s shoulders.

“You all right, Edna?” He wiped a thumb under her eye and it came away wet.

“I just got a little homesick. But I’m better than all right.” To prove it, she kissed him.

Ishmael dropped them both off at the train station and Alfie grabbed her hand and didn’t let go as they boarded and found seats together. The train was crowded. She hadn’t thought of getting a private car since it was only an hour long trip , but she kind of wished she had once she realized they would have to share their car with three men all sitting a careful distance apart and looking at their respective newspapers rather than chancing talking to each other.

Alfie put his arm around her and they sat in a comfortable silence. She rested her head on his shoulder, glad for a reprieve from all of the noise of the wedding.

It had been absolutely perfect.

Finally, food for all ten of us in this tiny niche fandom that is… somehow still going in spite of the everything!! One of several I either need to finish up or DID finish and just forgot to post!

A sudden snowstorm and psychic power outage lead to the unlikely duo of Nelson Tethers and Guybrush Threepwood to get out on duty to fix it! Little do they know that the culprit, one Otto Mentallis, has a ton of old tech hiding out in his lab, and some of it packs an unintended punch.

once again big shout out goes to @genaleah for coming up with this AU to begin with. It’s been almost ten years with these goobers and I still don’t get sick of cooking with them. Keep your eyes on here, Wildcard fans! Cause I hope to put out even more this year, including a much, much longer endeavor I’m cooking behind the scenes ;)
