Mort Garson - Journey to the Moon and Beyond - Sacred Bones' new collection of the synth pioneer's odds and ends

Like a perennial that returns with each new spring, the Mort Garson archives (Plantasia, Ataraxia, Lucifer) have brought to bear yet another awe-inspiring bloom. Journey to the Moon and Beyond finds even more new facets to the man’s sound. There’s the soundtrack to the 1974 blaxploitation film Black Eye (starring Fred Williamson), some previously unreleased and newly unearthed music for advertising. Just as regal is “Zoos of the World,” where Garson soundtracks the wild, preening, slumbering animals from a 1970 National Geographic special of the same name. The mind reels at just what project would have yielded a scintillating title like “Western Dragon,” but these three selections were found on tapes in the archive with no further information. The crown jewel of the set is no doubt Garson’s soundtrack to the live broadcast of the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing, as first heard on CBS News. That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for Moogkind. For decades, this audio was presumed lost, the only trace of it appearing to be from an old YouTube clip. Thankfully, diligent audio archivist Andy Zax came across a copy of the master tape while going through the massive Rod McKuen archive. So now we get to hear it in all its glory. Across six minutes, Garson conjures broad fantasias, whirring mooncraft sounds, zero-gravity squelches, and twinkling études. It showcases Mort’s many moods: sweet, exploratory, whimsical, a little bit corny, weaving it all together in a glorious whole.

One of our planet's most stunning sights is coming to the skies - a super blood Moon on Monday 16th May 2022.

In the year's only full lunar eclipse, Earth will come between the Sun and the Moon.

Falling fully into Earth's shadow, the Moon will slowly darken before turning dusky red.

It will be visible with the naked eye before dawn on Monday in most of Europe. The Americas will get a great view on Sunday evening.

The Moon will appear larger than usual because it will be at its closest point to Earth of its orbit, giving it the name super Moon.

It will also be called a super flower blood Moon. In the Northern Hemisphere, a full moon in May is often called a flower Moon because it coincides with the Spring flowers.

The only sunlight reaching the Moon during the full eclipse will be passing through the Earth's atmosphere. This light will be blood red, from all Earth's sunrises and sunsets reflected on to the Moon's surface, explains Dr Gregory Brown, astronomer at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London.

"You'll actually be seeing every sunrise and every sunset occurring around the Earth at once. All of that light will be projected on to the Moon," he told BBC News.

India is now the 4th nation to land successfully on the moon, thanks to the national space agency ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization). Chandrayaan - 3 (literal meaning: mooncraft) is a successor of a previously failed mission Chandrayaan - 2. Back in 2019, CH-2's lander lost contact barely 2 km above the surface of the moon, absolutely breaking so many hearts.

But not the will! Because what the scientists learned from the crash, they corrected. So much so that, when CH2 was landing, it still had a downward speed of 58 m/s (210 km/h). Too much! This time, though? This time it landed with a velocity of less than 2 m/s!! A brilliant soft landing!

Kudos to the ISRO team, may you fly us farther and farther!

Seitdem kann man Mort Garson und seine Moogs in Fernsehsendungen, Dokumentationen, Podcasts, Hip-Hop-Tracks und überall sonst hören, der Mann ist wieder ein kulturelles Phänomen. Wie eine Staude, die mit jedem neuen Frühling wiederkehrt, haben die Archive von Mort Garson eine weitere beeindruckende Blüte hervorgebracht. Journey to the Moon and Beyond zeigt noch mehr neue Facetten des Sounds dieses Mannes. India's moon rover completes its walk and enters "sleep mode."

India’s moon rover has been switched off after completing its walk on the lunar surface two weeks after its historic landing near the lunar south pole, the country’s space agency has said.

The Pragyan rover from the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft, which took off on July 14, was “set into Sleep mode”, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, late on Saturday.

The rover’s payloads are turned off and the data it collected has been transmitted to the Earth via the lander, the statement said.

The Chandrayaan-3 (“Mooncraft-3” in Sanskrit) lander and rover were expected to operate only for one lunar day, which is equal to 14 days on Earth. ISRO hopes that the rover may reawaken for another set of assignments when the next lunar day starts on September 22.

There was no word on the outcome of the rover searches for signs of frozen water on the lunar surface that could help future astronaut missions, as a potential source of drinking water or to make rocket fuel.

Last week, the space agency said the moon rover confirmed the presence of sulfur and detected several other elements. The rover’s laser-induced spectroscope instrument also detected aluminium, iron, calcium, chromium, titanium, manganese, oxygen and silicon on the surface, it said.

The Indian Express newspaper said the electronics on board the moon mission were not designed to withstand very low temperatures, less than -120C (-184F) during the nighttime on the moon.

Pallava Bagla, a science writer and co-author of books on India’s space exploration, said the rover has limited battery power.

The data is back on Earth and will be analysed by Indian scientists as a first look and then by the global community, he said.

By sunrise on the moon, the rover may or may not wake up because electronics can die at such cold temperatures, Bagla said.

“Making electronic circuits and components that can survive the deep cold temperature of the moon – that technology doesn’t exist in India,” he said.

After a failed attempt to land on the moon in 2019, India last week joined the United States, the Soviet Union and China as only the fourth country to achieve this milestone.

The successful mission showcases India’s rising standing as a technology and space powerhouse and dovetails with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s desire to project an image of an ascendant country asserting its place among the global elite.

The mission began more than a month ago at an estimated cost of $75m.

India’s success came just days after Russia’s Luna 25, which was aiming for the same lunar region, spun into an uncontrolled orbit and crashed. It had been intended to be the first successful Russian lunar landing after a gap of 47 years.

The head of Russia’s state-controlled space corporation Roscosmos attributed the failure to a lack of expertise because of the long break in lunar research that followed the last Soviet mission to the moon in 1976.

Active in space exploration since the 1960s, India has launched satellites for itself and other countries, and successfully put one in orbit around Mars in 2014.

India is planning its first mission to the International Space Station next year, in collaboration with the US.
