you know what i think is so interesting about the “only love makes you that crazy dear” scene is that it actually perfectly encapsulates jancy’s relationship, but not in the romantic way some people take it and the way it was (i assume) intended.

because jonathan wasn’t acting out of love for nancy when he fought steve. he was acting out of love for will.

nancy getting slutshamed? jonathan wants to leave. steve insults him? jonathan wants to leave. steve insults his mother? will? jonathan goes berserk.

because ultimately the most important person to him will always be will. nancy and her feelings and dreams and desires will always come second to jonathan’s family.

and that’s perfectly summed up by some old lady that knows nothing about the situation. love does make jonathan go crazy. but not love for nancy.

Not to come off as mean, but the Byler fandom really needs to stop using the plot and other characters as plot devices for byler. Lucas, Erica, Nancy, Max and Jancy have their own struggles who realistically are more important to themselves than Mike falling in love with Will. The most normal reaction would be them not giving a fuck lmao. We should not expect them to be wingmen or wingwomen because they have their own shit to deal with, not to mention thd Upside Down exists and Vecna is the most important part of the story, not the romance.

Also, stop talking about "realistically X and Y character would be homophobic haha" like, be for real. This is a TV show, ain't nobody gonna be homophobic lol. So, stop trying to act like "#1 canon defenders" by saying Hopper would be homophobic (just because he's a cop), when then you go around saying stoner Byler is "real". Like stoner Byler won't be happening because the Duffers are the first to want to get rid of the weed plot device. So it's likely Jonathan's weed problem won't even be mentioned at all, so it's even LESS likely Will suddenly decides to smoke. Not to mention that most Bylers enjoy making Will some cute, girl-ish, babygirl, who dresses and behaves hyper-femininely and is basically dependant on Mike. (Will is described/depicted as sensitive and artsy, so associating this with being feminine is lowkey harmful to gay men and misogynistic but whatever) So the chance of that Will taking the initiative to do drugs is 0%....

One thing that always makes me tilt my head in confusion is when someone says M*leven have been together for 4 seasons because...have we watched the same show? No they haven't lol.

If you really look at the timeline of Mike and El's relationship, you will see that they actually have not been a couple for that long. They have less episodes together as a couple than Jancy does. They kissed and got together in the last 5 minutes of season 2. Then they broke up after one episode in season 3 and didn't get back together until, again, the last couple of minutes of the season. And then they had a dubious break up in season 4 during the second episode where no one was sure if they were even still together or not. And then Mike "confessed his love" during the last episode and they didn't talk to each other once after the fact. We're still not sure by the end of season 4 if they are even really together or not because they didn't speak to each other to acknowledge any of the issues they're having or Mike's monologue.

So, the total amount of episodes where they are a confirmed on screen couple is about two and a half, give or take some minutes. Two and a half-ish episodes out of 4 seasons. And you guys expect me to believe they're supposed to be the main "it" couple? Not going to happen.

And this is why it's funny to me when people say they won't break M*leven up after all this time and make Byler canon. Like babe, they have already spent more time broken up than they have spent as an actual couple. And when we HAVE seen them as a couple on screen, they're almost tearing apart the party or they're lying to each other and making each other feel like crap. I think it's totally plausible for the Duffers to break them up for good and go through with Byler, which they HAVE been building up since season 2 whether you want to admit that or not.

It has just become glaringly obvious to me that a lot of M*levens don't actually pay attention when they're watching the show.

ok nobody asked but these r my stranger things unpopular opinions, inspired by a tweet where people just shared super common and well accepted opinions instead of actual controversy lol

also half of these r gonna be ronance centered because they’re literally all i think about

- first and foremost, nancy is a lesbian. i think so many of her actions and struggles can absolutely be traced back to comphet and repression and i feel like people want to cling onto her romance with steve and jonathan as a way to justify her fondness for them, when i think she can just care about them because they’re her friends and they’re trauma bonded(tm)

- while i like steve and robin being besties as much as everyone else i feel like people overestimate how close they really are in canon. of course they’re best friends but they really aren’t overly dependent on each other like people interpret them to be. they’re best friends but they also function really well on their own.

- though there’s no denying that will has feelings for mike i sincerely doubt that those romantic feelings are reciprocated and i think people are way too confident that byler is gonna be canon

- elmax is miles better than almost every canon AND fanon relationship in the show (i’d argue jopper and lumax (and biased opinion ronance) are the only genuine contenders)

- while i make a habit of being overly critical of men i think people forget that the “grumpy dad” trope with hopper that they like so much comes with him being a total dick sometimes lol

- both jonathan AND steve were weird as fuck in season 1. y’all r having a mid-off when u argue jancy vs. stancy

- and by mid-off i mean stancy wasn’t as bad as y’all act like it was and jancy is not as good as y’all act like it is

- y’all infantilize the FUCK out of robin buckley and im SICK OF IT!! she’s incredibly smart and strong and u people act like she’s stupid/a pushover/a nervous little baby

- in general i think the ronance fandom likes to apply tropes to nancy and robin in a way that isn’t accurate to their characters. its a very common and predictable pattern and i think thats why a lot of fan works feel out of character (an example to this is people applying grumpy x sunshine to nancy and robin respectively and it just doesn’t fit)

- karen is not a good mother. i think everyone can agree karen is weird as fuck for the billy thing, but i see a lot of people argue for karen that she’s really grown as a mother but i’m not seeing it. i don’t doubt that she loves her kids but there’s a reason mike and nancy are Like That

- y’all made up a ton of steve’s personality traits. i’m all good with interpreting his character a certain way but if the reason you hate nancy wheeler is because she unknowingly poked at insecurity of steve’s that u made up i have 0 respect for ur opinions lol

- and on that note steve is pretty badly written. i don’t think his path to “redemption” was bad but he’s so far from anything special that the love he gets from the fandom astounds me

I really want Kali to make an appearance in Stranger Things 5. It would be great if she would be in more than one episode. I'd even accept a reference or mention of her. The dream would be for Stali to happen, lol.

I want her to come back, too!!! I honestly haven’t done much speculation about s5 and I’m trying to avoid spoilers, but… it would be great if she came back. El couldn’t defeat Vecna by herself, but maybe the sisters teamed up together could knock him out once and for all?

I’d imagine that what happened in Hawkins at the end of s4 probably made national news, so maybe that’s how she would hear about it and think she ought to go check on her sister. Canon Kali was full of anger and thirsting for vengeance against people who’d hurt her and her friends, so I don’t imagine she’d take it lightly if she found out that her sister, and her sister’s friends and family, were all in danger. Especially once she learned that it was because of 001. I’m not sure exactly how her powers would be useful in defeating Vecna, but I definitely feel like she should get to have a role in the final battle.

Stali of course would be fun (and would conveniently resolve the stupid stancy-vs-jancy triangle) but I HIGHLY doubt that’ll happen in canon. But hey that’s what ao3 is for! 😜

The whole thing with Murray’s comments and Nancy and Jon getting together…. It is set up in such a way that it can be read as a situation where an ambitious teenage girl was pressured into what she was “supposed” to be. Nancy was told by a man that she respected and who took her seriously (and was the ONLY one to do so, so Murray gained an untold amount of trust from Nancy immediately, and the show just brushing off their relationship is such a loss but ok), that in order to be her real self she must dump Steve. Now Murray was just poking at two teenagers with a metaphorical stick to see what would they do. Understandable position, as a younger sister haver love doing that also (not with romantic feelings though but Murray was never meant to be ethical). I doubt that what the comment meant for him can be easily translated into what it meant for Nancy (let alone Jon, who thinks that he is better than most people and that he is definitely better than Steve, so I imagine he was nodding along). But he did influence her into becoming an investigative journalist. Like Murray with him taking Nancy seriously influenced her into two major life altering decisions (career and significant other). Like wow. And they never interacted again! Fucking hate st continuity.

Like Nancy dumping Steve because Murray told her to do so is a major thing. It’s BAD for jancy. Before s4 I thought that they were not mentioning it because jancy happened and was the endgame. But with them toying with stancy and likely knowing that they might toy with stancy all along??? Why did they not leave it open to interpretation. It’s such a juicy storyline, it shows the magnitude of the influence that you can have on a teenage girl, it’s beautiful, it’s painful, it’s the stuff of a real love-triangle (which is hard to make interesting but that would make it interesting!!!). Why did they write it then??? Whyyyyyy?????

He and Nancy have the potential for a really interesting dynamic! It really is a shame we don't get to see more of it tbh. and you are so right in what his comment meaning to him and what it meant to Nancy and Jon separately would be so different! I don't know if Nancy would necessarily feel pressured by it, (though I wouldn't say she wasn't, either) but maybe it would vindicate something of how she was feeling about her relationship with Steve at the time and her feelings for Jonathan? Like a "oh this man I respect and who takes me seriously also thinks Jonathan is better for me, thinks I should go for it. Maybe I will..." kind of thing?

And lol yeah so true Jon just had his own conception of himself and Steve and their relationships with Nancy confirmed by Murray. he just kinda got...permission? I guess? to make a move on Nancy even though he was the one bringing up Steve both times he's mentioned on the road trip.

Totally see where you're coming from of Murray's influence not being mentioned because you figured Jancy was endgame, makes sense (if boring) to not question it if it doesn't need to be addressed as an issue because the pairing is canon for the rest. But now the teen love triangle has been brought back.... you're so right it is bad for Jancy. It brings up stuff about them that a lot of people (especially the Duffers!) don't want to deal with or acknowledge. Though I don't think they were planning the whole time to bring stancy back I think that sort of happened because the duffers unfortunately don't know what to do with Nacy if she doesn't have a boy to look at and Steve when he isn't pining over Nancy.

There's not enough time left to fully and satisfyingly delve into the issues between the original older teens, especially since some of those issues aren't treated as issues. It would be interesting to see, and also so so juicy, the complicated relationship they have with each other because of the UD etc, but I don't think a whole lot of interesting canon material will come from it (though that doesn't mean fan content can't!!) just based on how other romantic relationships and their dynamics with each other have been treated through the show. tbh I think maybe s5 will tease the love triangle but ultimately either end up with them all single (my preference) or with Jancy still together.

I did read the entire manga (except for the bonus stories) but from my memory, the only love interests the other guardians had was the gem boys who were working under queen beryl and those guys died. this got so long i'm sorry lol. that post about jonathan hurting steve just reminds me of my number one issue w steve and jonathan/nancy becoming closer which is that the onus is almost always placed on steve to make amends and take that first step w/little to no emphasis on that effort being reciprocated. like, steve apologizes to jonathan for everything in s1 (as he should) and saves his life twice. whether or not you think jonathan should apologize for how intense the fight got is up for debate (i would just like acknowledgement of how seriously he did/almost did hurt steve) but steve def deserves an apology for 1)the photos (which he never got - obv he broke the camera but then he also bought jonathan a new one all w no actual apology to steve on jonathan's part, it wasn't only nancy's privacy he invaded) 2) the fact that he slept w nancy knowing she and steve were still together (which he literally verbally acknowledges when nancy says she waited for him or w/e). that second one obv also goes for nancy bc she also doesn't apologize to steve for leading him on for a year while having feelings for someone else then cheating on him. this isn't me saying jancy are terrible ppl and entirely unsympathetic (nancy is obv v traumatized and struggling w barb's death tho this does not excuse the way she treated steve) but they both did some fucked up shit to steve that ppl rarely make them acknowledge or even feel bad for, which creates a v unbalanced dynamic imo.

So this might just be curating different fandom experiences, but I don't personally see a ton of Steve being the one who has to make amends in fandom or Jonathan and Nancy not having introspection on their pasts. In canon I totally see that though, and it's a lot. Like I think they're all just really human, which I love. They fuck up, and they mistrust, and they have to learn and grow into being close. It isn't automatic.

I think like.......here's my thought process. Apologies are nice. Apologies are good. The right thing to do is always to apologize if you feel like you've wronged someone.

But I also think Steve wouldn't accept it.

Okay I'm putting the rest under a read more because I'm going on a little meta rant on Steve Jonathan Nancy and why apologies are a complicated thing for them and ultimately not what any of them really need.

First Steve because he's my blorbo. Steve is a really interesting character. He has this veneer of extreme self confidence that hides a really soft core of a person that ultimately experiences a significant amount of rejection. He has this brittle exterior that's bitchy and snarky and gives as good as it gets, but things touch him in a deeper way that I think is easy for a lot of people to ignore. I could totally see Jonathan awkwardly trying to bring things up to maybe try and apologize only for Steve to be like nah man we're fine! It didn't work out no biggie, I'm aok, you guys work together and we didn't.

Steve is constantly searching for validation and love (Implied because his parents are neglectful or at the very least have an extremely bad marriage that would be enough to add layers to anything) I think that the bullshit conversation really impacted Steve in a significant way, but if he shared that, then he's leaving himself vulnerable to getting hurt again, so he would do everything in his power to truly make everyone think he's okay, even potentially making himself think he's okay too, when deep down he isn't.

I alsoooo don't really think that Nancy or Jonathan necessarily feel bad. If Steve is pushing so hard to say he isn't hurt, then eventually I could see them not thinking too hard on it. Jonathan because in canon they aren't really friends obviously (Which is a goddamn travesty by the way I wrote an entire series of fics because I hated that they weren't friends) and Nancy because Nancy is an extremely self focused person.

Not selfish. I think it's important to make the distinction between selfish and self-focused. I don't think she's intentionally doing things to hurt the people around her for her own gain, but she thinks about how things effect her and how things impact her first and foremost. Not even just with Steve, but with everyone. A good example of this is in season three when she cost Jonathan his job too with her sleuthing. Her boyfriend who is in a very bad financial situation at home and could have really used a job that actually pertained to his interests and might have lead to future relationships in his industry. She didn't feel bad about that, she was too focused on the injustice to her. Even something as simple as never knocking when he's in the dark room and ruining his pictures over and over.

She just doesn't think about other people, which makes sense! She's a teenager, she's a privileged person, and she's smart as all hell. She gets extremely focused on doing the 'right' thing (according to her rules and her mind because she knows she's smart and thinks she's the smartest in the room always) and she misses doing the best thing a lot of the time.

For Steve, someone who is clearly extremely not self focused-which is also not a great way to be because extremes never are- and Jonathan- Someone who has been forced to put his family first his entire life- that is always going to be a point of conflict in her relationships with them.

But I don't know if we've ever seen Nancy give a genuine apology in the show, and I honestly doubt we ever would. It's not in her character really. But! Regardless of all of that, apology isn't really the end goal. Saying your sorry shouldn't be the end of something. I would much rather see Nancy Steve and Jonathan grow into people with more empathy and ability to own up to their shit/call people out on their stuff in the future rather than rehashing their past again. Unfortunately I have a feeling season five is gonna be a lot of rehashing lmaoooo

The Stranger Things watching continues with Episodes 5 and 6.

Things are really heating up!

You know, I’m just glad someone finally told Joyce, to her face, that they believe her. Almost nobody deserves that more than her. Also her and Hop investigating together is hmmmmmmmm. I think I mentioned in the discord that I legitimately forgot that they were a canon pairing, lol.

More seeds of Jancy. But now featuring Steve Harrington’s broken heart. And face, courtesy of Jonathan. But you know what? He needed that. It’s the start of his character development. I know where that path is headed, and I’m giddy to see him finally walk it. Not that I completely hated bitchy King Steve or anything (only a lil bit), but you get what I’m saying.

Drama in the Party, of course. Normally I would say that it only feels dramatic because they’re like twelve, but you know… this is one case where it’s a little more justified, lol. What with the interdimensional monsters and all. The entire friendship of the Party is very sweet and heartwarming to me.

Also I can’t decide what my favorite line in either episode was:

Hopper telling Joyce, in no uncertain terms, “You were right.” (heartwarming, completely necessary, finally validation for her)

Or

El dealing with the bullies, and Dustin yelling at them as they run “That’s right - she’s our friend and she’s crazy!” (sweet and also lmao)

Two more episodes left. Planning on watching them tomorrow. Probably later at night, but I’ll get to it.

Creelarke lmao they were 100% friends when they were younger and honestly they would have been really sweet, I hope we get to see some of them in the play.

Elmax I also love, the vibes are fantastic, but I equally love their friendship lol.

Elumax is a great dynamic and I can never decide whether or not El and Lucas are dating or not.

Jargyle!!!!!!! I actually love Jargyle and I'm so glad that Jonathan actually got his first friend that wasn't his younger brother or gf lol and I'm also glad he got to relax for once in his life, Argyle was my favourite addition to s4. Them being stoner bfs would have such great vibes.

Ronance I love them so much and their scenes in s4 together were so great, their dynamic was everything and I hope to see them more in s5 and I think we will. With the whole ronance, jancy, stncy and single Nancy debate, I think that anything but stncy would be great and it depends more on how the Duffers pull it off.

Stonathan and Henderhop have great "in another life" energy.

stranger things non-canon ships are almost always more interesting than canon ships imo. That’s because they’re all about the theorizing, the build-up, the clues, the potential pre-dating stage. Almost ships lose intrigue the second they become official. That’s what happened with Jancy, that’s what happened with Mileven (not that there was much “build up,” but I’m talking once season 3 started), that’s what will happen with Jopper. I’m a Byler because I love the theorizing. But even ships that objectively have no storyline in canon (Stonathan, Jargyle, etc). are just more interesting to think about. And it’s precisely *because* they are unexplored.

Totally respect your opinion! I'm sure delving into non-canon ships are fun for some people. I am...not one of those people LOL I actually hate non-canon ships. To me, there's really nothing worth exploring in non-canon because there's no storyline or evidence, it's just all headcanons which I'm not a fan of either. I think you can still have build up and intrigue even when couples become official, but the writers have to figure out a way to do that, too! Non-canon ships are just not my cup of tea, but totally respect that others really like exploring them! :)

Nancy is capable of being a de facto leader of the group the way Mike is and to be the kind of person willing to jump off a cliff/jump in the water for her friends’ sake; she’s also unfortunately polarizing in the fandom much like her brother, partly due to how her romantic relationships are being handled

Steve is loyal, has big sibling—not necessarily second parent, but specifically older brother—energy, bit of a romantic, and the closest one of the group to have one foot in the popular circles before ultimately choosing his friends over that crowd; they also both directly faced off with a blond, fandom-polarizing “top dog” type of antagonist at one point

Ironically Nancy is more of the ranger in terms of weapons like Lucas while Steve would be more of a sword swinger like Mike’s paladin

Robin coming from a lower class background, having felt like an outcast, and possessing a similar creativity and sharpness (enough to survive the UD on her own for a week) with a sarcastic streak similar to Will; “Is that why you don’t have friends?” / “He just said he dumped your ass, that doesn’t sound like a break” That’s literally her

Imagine Robin being Will, her going missing, and then Jonathan turning up in the woods around the same time; Steve being suspicious of him + of the way Nancy trusts him to help them find Robin can mirror S1 Lucas’s suspicion towards El and her intentions while really wanting to find Will

I can see Robin falling in love with Nancy like Will has for Mike; meanwhile Nancy was raised in the Wheeler household that’s so famously known for having parents that love each other, and then there’s her relationship with Jonathan

Argyle is the last to join the Party, originally hailing from CA and wanting to make friends as a lonely newcomer to Hawkins; the supernatural and everything the Party deals with can be a lot, but he goes where the group goes, accepting the risk and rolling with it, sorta like he does with Cali gang in S4, driving all the way to Indiana, and learning his best friend’s little sister has powers

Initially Argyle was being left out of the loop by the group and later, despite being excited to meet him, Jonathan was probably a little dismissive of him at first like El was to Max

But they warm up to each other, and the S3 Elmax bonding where Max helps El experience being a regular kid -> Jargyle bonding where Argyle helps Jonathan experience being a regular kid kinda like S4 Jargyle with Jonathan having been able to have a friend + feel a little more like a teenager

El going to Max for relationship advice in S3 -> Jonathan going to Argyle for relationship advice

Also he’s a good driver; he was the getaway driver for Cali gang that is zoomer behavior

heheheheheh yesss they are cringefail loser dorks!! it's a relief to hear that they were still relatively in-character for this one - i was definitely a little worried, just because it started becoming more of a funny thing than anything, and i feel like anytime i try to write with humor i end up sacrificing some character depth along the way. i'm glad they were acting how they should in this one though!!

the jancy interruptions T_T i feel like in canon they'd be a lot nicer than they were here. i'm just way too fond of the idea of them teasing their younger siblings for being together lol
