Funny Sonic The Hedgehog facts I’ve learned after scouring the wiki (P.1)

(I’ve never watched anything sonic related I just think he’s neat)

Character descriptors

He’s had a myriad of nicknames such as, Blue Buffoon, Blue Rat, Faker, and my personal favorite-Pin cushion.

Sonic not only isn’t a fan of romance, but has an apparent dislike for Amy.

More quotes from his dislike list; The word “slow”, insults directed at his speed, slowness, someone claiming to be faster than him, tears, being impersonated and thought to have turned evil (this is rlly specific??), egg man polluting nature, strong winds (again ???)

Some skills include; breakdancing; vehicle intuition; swordsmanship; grinding.

My favorite attacks from the listed moves: Wimpy Punch, Wall shuffle, Windmill

Creation and Early Drafts

Basically in the 1990s Sega wanted a game involving a company mascot. They wanted it to rival Nintendo’s Mario and it to be as iconic as Micky Mouse. So R&D submitted a bunch of ideas like a wolf, bulldog, warrior character, and a robot.

Speed being a big thing in the game was important because Yuji Naka was doing Mario Bros.’s World 1-1 speed runs and felt inspired. So the focus switched only to fast creatures (one concept was of a rabbit who could grab stuff with prehensile ears. It was deemed to complicated and scrapped)

Later Sega changed tunes and started working on concepts based on animals that could roll into a ball for an attack move. After asking locals opinions at a state park, Naoto Oshima found the hedgehog to be the favorite.

Sonic was originally named Mister Hedgehog.

English speaking fans mistranslated his notes and thought it was “Mister Needlemouse” until Yuji Naka corrected the misinformation in Jan. 2021

In the early designs of his debut game, sonic was originally colored teal, then later a light blue. Then it was changed to a darker blue so he would stand out against specific backgrounds, along with matching the Sega logo

According to Oshima, sonic was designed by putting Felix The Cat’s head on Micky Mouse’s body. His boots were based of the Bad album cover, and the white/red scheme was based on Santa.

His personality was inspired by Bill Clinton.

Sonic was created without being able to swim because Naka did not believe hedgehogs could do so.
