Day One Hundred Nine
So totally my ninth graders read their books and continued the assignment on World 101 that they'd started yesterday. And I thought it went pretty well! Students were really productive, whether they opted to sit alone or group up with their friends, and I loved the effort- particularly from students for whom this was a challenging assignment. I also loved that some of the ones who don't usually self-advocate were asking me to clarify questions, or point them in the right direction if they were having a hard time finding information. One even negotiated an extension after having some trouble with the wifi connection on his chromebook (I'd have given it without him asking in that situation, but I loved that he asked before I could say so).
The funniest part of the day happened during my second section. I was walking around, checking students' progress, and out of the corner of my eye I saw a boy pull what, at first, looked like a block of cheese out of his backpack and take a bite. It was actually a twinkie, but I told him what it had looked like in my peripheral vision, he laughed and said that would also have been a great snack. I said, "Yup, would've been no judgement."
Cue the chorus of "We listen and we don't judge!"
The boy then added that it would be totally normal for him to have a block of cheese in his backpack, and last year he and his friends hid in the band room closet and made a whole charcuterie board on a music stand.
So, of course, that was the moment The Principal walked in. He shot me a quizzical look, I just grinned and shrugged. Then he told me why he was there: to find out whether or not I'd be interested in being part of a district team doing some curriculum work (the paid kind, and I told him yes). I assume the mysterious ways on ninth grade boys are something folks miss out on when they go from being classroom teachers to administrators. Or, at least, they get less exposure.
Anyways.
I spent my prep time sending emails (failure notifications as well as some positive ones, which got a great response), talking about union stuff with Mr. B, and then chatting with the majority of my department about the odds that we'll have a snow day tomorrow. We're definitely going to have snow, it's just a matter of when and how much!

A family doesn’t have to be a husband, a wife, and their kids. Sometimes a family is a scientist, his butler robot, and their school full of amusing clones of famous historical figures.

His company, meanwhile, was in a state of mutiny. The jealousy, envy, and finally rage among his youngest and most talented dancers at his seeming disregard of them was reaching a boiling point. The women, but also the men, felt deserted, as if by a lover, they said, and they let out a collective cry: what about me? [...] Fearful that the company would collapse, senior dancers such as Melissa Hayden and Arthur Mitchell pulled Suzanne aside: "Things are falling apart, why don't you just sleep with him?"

Day One Hundred Three
During advisory, we all do little lessons based on the grade our students are in. First semester, the tenth grade lessons were about community service during; now they're all about career exploration. They're fairly simple and they don't take long. There's always plenty of time for students to socialize, get a bit of work done, and schedule their flex times for the week afterwards. But I still have one boy who just refuses to do anything.
I think he expects me to get angry about that, but I'm more perplexed than anything.
But I'll keep trying to figure out what's going on there.
I didn't have anything major to do during my prep time because I'm in the middle of showing Shake Hands With the Devil in Global Studies. But a bunch of supplies I ordered came in, so I went around and delivered those: some textbooks for Mr. B, lined sticky notes for Mrs. C, a new pencil sharpener for Ms. B, a few other odds and ends. The general stuff- expo markers, batteries, pens and pencils- went onto the shelves in the social studies office.
Being a department head is like being teacher Santa Claus.
Global Studies was solid. Shake Hands With the Devil is an engaging film, it makes students ask questions about what happened in Rwanda. It's also heavy- two of the girls said they almost cried (after one of the most powerful scenes Roy Dupuis does as Romeo Dallaire)- and I thought they handled it with a lot of maturity. We'll finish the film tomorrow and discuss what happened next in history, and how it relates to the current crisis in DRC.
Cause and effect, connecting dots, that's what I'm all about teaching here.
