17 PLEASESEEEEE
(ask game from here)
OFCOFCCC
17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that wonât make it in the text.
ajdhajd so actually I have many wips đ I guess the most recent would be the one i am TRYING to write for revalink week but sadly it has literally no worldbuilding so I'm gonna use a more substantial wip..
let's talk abt my modern revalink hip hop au đ
I've talked about this au quite extensively here and here, but recently I've been thinking more abt it 𫣠I've really considered making a playlist of all the songs I can imagine either revali or link doing a combo to, but I never got around to it SKFJSKF so I'll just talk abt it here
first of all, mr morale by kendrick lamar is definitely a revali song like?? especially that first part with the spoken intro, "it was one of the worst performances I've seen in my life, I couldn't sleep last night" AJDBAJFJ it sounds so mean but then the rest of the song is sort of conveying those emotions and I just feel like revali could really relate to it yk? also the beat goes hard â
next is silent hill by kendrick lamar and I think link would really slay this, despite what you might think I am not a kendrick lamar listener AJDBSJFN ok but I'm envisioning a very specific combo to this song that sadly I can't show you guys but it's very isolated and groovy and to the audience it looks laid back but it really takes so much precision and control to hit every beat and I'm just in love with it !!
ok this one is for revali, king's rant by masego, and I just think that honestly revali is a king that has many things to rant about and this song fits him perfectly, plus it gives him that opportunity to be a little more fluid with his movements while still retaining his more aggressive control đ
I FINALLY HAVE A VIDEO this one is for link đ u guys the attitude?? the control and precision but also in a way that keeps the flow?? the facial expressions?? this is literally how I imagine link would dance like slay đ¤
hm.. I seem to have deviated from the original prompt oops. OK let's get back on track
I just feel like revali is someone who is very passionate about the history of hip hop, like he thinks that people who start doing hip hop just because it's trendy or whatever aren't "real dancers" and he thinks they should be educated in hip hop's origin and stuff like that before they can call themselves a dancer. he's fr like my current dance teacher, ok last year he literally sat my class down and made us watch a documentary on hip hop history and gave us homework questions đ so yeah that seems like something revali would do
I've very briefly mentioned this before, but actually hip hop was not revali's first love! it was ballet ;w; AJDBAJBDSKJDKSKDKSK it seems so fucking funny but he just really liked the feeling of being free soaring through the air with his little leaps and twirls (idk can you tell I'm not a ballet person LMAO) and so he did take ballet classes as a kid for a while. but sadly internalized and external toxic masculinity pushed him away from that :( he went into hip hop instead because it's seen as a much more masculine discipline of dance, and luckily he ended up really enjoying it too!! over time he's changed his mindset to not feel like he has to do hip hop to be a "real man" but he just can't see himself doing ballet anymore :/
a lot of the time he places a very strong emphasis in breakdancing in his style, because that's what he forced himself to learn when he was pressured into hip hop. and he's very good at breaking, so he does it most of the time when freestyling or choreographing. however, he truly shines when he gets to be a little more graceful softer with his movements, because he's always been in tune with his body and the way he moves, and he's very skilled at being able to dance in a more fluid way, he just never feels like he can comfortably do it in front of ppl :(
link on the other hand is not afraid to get more sensual/graceful in his moves, however his strengths truly lie in isolation. this bitch has so much precision control over his body like he is out here tutting and locking like ?? but I've also mentioned how he does a little bit of contemporary on the side, which I just think is so *mwah* đ I've said it before and I'll say it again, but any given sunday is peak vibes for this au bc like ????? not only is it revalink it's just if link's dance style was put into a song idk how to explain it
ok I will stop talking here bc I feel like nothing I'm saying is making sense anymore đ I'm running out of more ideas for this au ngl maybe it's time I start actually writing it lmao
#revalink#revali#link#botw#breath of the wild#the legend of zelda#legend of zelda#tloz#loz#i will answer everyone else's asks tmrw!#im v tired rn#but thank u am oomfie for the ask !! đĽş#sorry if I didn't answer it in the right way ajdbakfj I just really don't do worldbuilding for any of my aus đ#i guess I have one but it's for mdzs and I assumed you probably wouldn't know it ajdbskjf#plus I abandoned it a year ago oops đ#noraiir-arts#ask game#me being So Normal about this game#crow's revalinkverse

Task 001: Character Playlist.
Death Becomes Her - a Nyah Queen playlist
Snippets of Lyrics below:
1. tipsy - Chloe x Halle
man just this entire song is her vibe, k bye
I've been crucified, darling Ghosts haunt me like New Orleans I've been charged with murder Need someone toâ
pushâ
me further I'll hitâ
you where it hurts, yeah If youâ
don't put me first, yeah And I don't give no apologies Ifâyouâloseâa life, that'sânot on me,âyeah
[Pre-Chorus] Better, baby, better treat me better Better than those other guys who change up like the weather, yeah It is such a shame that they went missing, they can't find 'em now Oh, I wonder how I accidentally put them in the ground, yeah
[Chorus] I might be a little tipsy on your love Makes me a little crazy, but so what? You're strumming on my heartstrings, don't be dumb If you love your little life, then don't fuck up
[Verse 2] I'll take you to the afterlife Boy, if you ain't actin' right Key your car and crash the lights Hit your head, I'm not polite Then I'll hunt down your family Let 'em know 'bout the tragedy Who did it? A mystery But you know that it, it was me, yeah
2. scream - Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson
Tired of injustice Tired of the schemes The lies are disgusting So what does it mean, damn it? Kicking me down I got to get up As jacked as it sounds The whole system sucks, damn it
Peek in the shadow Come into the light You tell me I'm wrong Then you better prove you're right! You're selling out souls but I I care about mine I've got to get stronger And I won't give up the fight
3. girls like us - Zoe Wees
It's hard for girls like us We don't know who we trust Not even the ones we love 'Cause they don't know
4. motive - Ariana Grande & Doja Cat
'Cause I see you tryin', subliminally tryin' To see if I'm gon' be the one that's in your arms I admit it's exciting, parts of me kinda like it But before I lead you on
Baby, tell me, what's your motive? (Motive)
You treat me like gold, baby Now you wanna spoil me Did you want a trophy or you wanna sport me, baby? Want me on your neck 'cause you wanted respect 'Cause you fightin' some war, baby Well, I had to bring the fists out, had to put a wall up But don't trust phonies, baby (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah) You gotta tell me, what's your motive, baby?
5. boss bitch - Doja Cat
Yeah, ain't tryna be cool like you Wobblin' aroundâ
inâ
your high heelâ
shoes I'm clumsy, made friends with theâ
floor Two for one, you know a bitch buy four And two left feet, you know I always drop First thing a girl did was a bop I'm the whole damn cake and the cherry on top Shook up the bottle, made a good girl pop
I'm a bitch, I'm a boss I'm a bitch and a boss, I'ma shine like gloss
6. nightmare - Halsey
"Come on, little lady, give us a smile" No, I ain't got nothin' to smile about I got no one to smile for, I waited a while for A moment to say I don't owe you a goddamn thing
7. all the stars - Kendrick Lamar, SZA
Tell me what you gon' do to me Confrontation ain't nothin' new to me You can bring a bullet, bring a sword, bring a morgue But you can't bring the truth to me Fuck you and all your expectations I don't even want your congratulations I recognize your false confidence And calculated promises all in your conversation I hate people that feel entitled Look at me crazy 'cause I ain't invite you Oh, you important? You the moral to the story? You endorsin'? Mothafucka, I don't even like you Corrupted man's heart with a gift That's how you find out who you dealin' with A small percentage who I'm buildin' with I want the credit if I'm losin' or I'm winnin' On my momma, that's the realest shit
8. needed me - Rihanna
But baby, don't get it twisted You was just another n**** on the hit list Tryna fix your inner issues with a bad bitch Didn't they tell you that I was a savage? Fuck ya white horse and ya carriage Bet you never could imagine Never told you you could have it
You needed me Ooh, you needed me To feel a little more, and give a little less Know you hate to confess But baby ooh, you needed me 9. checklist - Normani, Calvin Harris feat. Wizkid

Am I...?? (Inwardly GASPS)!! Which Part...??
Today is March 2nd 2021 and I got my puter back and went to look at what I had last written on December 16th 2020. When I opened the file, it had been changed⌠dates had been obscured and certain things had been reworded⌠So⌠I have decided to go back through all of my previous posts to ensure the integrity of what I am writing stays that way! During this process I will be putting together a collection of my favorite quotes and post fragments. Which I will dub Rock and Rollâs Greatest Hits, if you live near me go buy airhorns Ill tell you why, When the greatest hits album comes out. What your about to read is primarily from Dec. 16th with a few changes or should I say⌠restorations?? Probably a little of both to be honest. Everything is still as it happened, I just add better descriptive words and fine tune the analogies so that they are easier to digest⌠My English teacher always told me that was what I was good at! Along with many others⌠who have said the same⌠not only do I understand it⌠Iâm able to explain it in a way that others understand as well. ENJOY
On the seventh of December I woke up not too sure if something had occurred that night or not⌠as I have mentioned before they use a numbing agent that basically masks the pain until it wears off approximately 12 hours later⌠When I a woke on this day I was having moments of clarity and for some reason just couldnât keep them to myself. talking to one of the staff members of the homeless shelter I expressed my destiny that I actually had one, that was going to bring me to greatness⌠then out of nowhere I just blurted out there is going to be a power shift!!!! And at that very moment I couldnât believe what it was that had just come out of my mouth. I didnât even believe it at first because the guy at the desk was like IDK⌠about⌠that⌠but when I went back into my room, the look on my roommateâs face said it all!! It seems as though those who pull strings and orchestrate a lot of this⌠put all of their eggs into one basket. I donât know exactly what the terms of thee bet were but Iâm assuming it had/has something to do with me not being able to control my compulsivity associated with my dissociation. Unfortunately for them I made a deal with God. It was while I was on quarantine and even though I was in a basement all by myself people kept F$%^&*!> with me. This is when I prayed stating that I would not falter, for my body his temple his craft and his glory. that I need to take care of myself and my destiny, for it is in his hands and I wonât let my selfishness or imperfections stop him from fulfilling his plan. Over and over again I have cried and cried about how fundamental and powerful this is all going to be. EFFIN CRAZY!! And now that I know without anyone telling me and it literally being given to me somehow is what is freaking everybody out. How do I know or how the hell did I figure it out!! I really couldnât tell you and the only thing that is possible is that our Creator endowed me with such responsibility. Crazy!! (this was before I considered the probability of God being a woman, A mother, A Lover)
Low and behold one of my favorite artists Mr. Kid, Maniac, Rager, Wizard, Pursuer of Happiness Cudi dropped a new album entitled Man on the MOON Three. Ill have to say itâs a wonderfully made album! The album delves deep into who Scott is⌠I know the Fans are going to love it.
Rewind a little bit sorry for my hiatus just needed to stay focused and well as your aware have been led here not by accident and had some things that I needed to take care of before I started writing again. Not to mention I have been dealing with a lot only to know that I am who I am for a reason Rockstar Knights off MOTM3 has a lot to say concerning who I am and what I have realized as a result to my struggle. The Song is a collab with Trippie Redd and really encapsulates so much, that its hard to describe in words.
I had a very interesting conversation with my mother the other day and came to a pretty profound thought. 1st I was telling her how I was being told that I am tooâŚ.!!! Smart!! Like WTF!! REALLY!! Is that even a thing?? But I didnât let it get to me too much as it probably is the reason I face so much adversity, No matter the community I enter into. This is how I have explained it to her and a couple other people in the community as well as the Rasta Man in the PNW. The best analogy I could present is if a plant with a fire burning so big and so hot on one side of the plant, a fire so big and hot that it probably would kill most other plants, but not this plant. This plant had sooooo much drive and will to live that instead of giving up it grew in the opposite direction of the blaze. While the roots could withstand the blazing inferno becoming one with the heat and pain Upon the journey away from the fire (society) the plant developed different characteristics colors and attributes that no other plant had. Essentially that journey completely changed that plants physiology Psychology and possible its genetic makeup altogether. Now that the plant has grown so far from the fire (Society) that its all alone. Now theres a different kind of fire where he once thought was safe. But as he grows back towards the fire to escape the new blaze (tyranny) he realizes he will never be able to be the same as the fire he grew so far away from. Now the only option the plant has with death being imminent is to grow as big and bright as quickly as possible before it is engulfed on all sides.
All this taken into account along with factoring in the two major belief structures in the world one Being Creation or Evolution (The Big BANG) this plant which has defied all odds still shines brightly displaying its colors and unique characteristics no matter how dark the room may be it still continues to bloom! Is this a Divine will and plan or are we experiencing the next step of Evolution??? My honest opinion is its both! For the mere ability to adapt and change and prevail in situations others couldnât dream of or even have nightmares about is truly remarkable and in my eyes is an act of GOD! Just as any evolutionary step would be. The crazier part is⌠he has no handle!! Nothing to grab on to leaving no way for anyone to grab hold and control! AYEâŚ.
I thought this all might just be me being stubborn or simply an idiot until for some reason I opened up my meme App. Something I never open or even look at and the first thing that popped up was a picture and quote saying that many told Marilyn Monroe that she was only beautiful because of the clothes and dresses she wore. It then concluded Marilyn Monroe did a photoshoot in nothing but a burlap potato sack. The photos and the message she sent were completely opposite of that which was being said by spectators. Now!! As scrolled to the second meme I was expecting something funny!! That wasnât the case what I saw next was the upcoming alignment of the two largest planets in the solar system Jupiter and Saturn. Not only does their alignment happen only every 20 years but the proximity of this occurrence to the earth as well as the proximity to each other hasnât been the same for close to 800 years⌠What does it all mean⌠IDK but The Christmas Star is what their calling the alignment and if your familiar with the bible is the star that the kings, from other lands followed  to bring gifts to baby JESUS! Who knows what this alignment could usher in.?
So profound thought comes to me on a daily basis now itâs so strange the way that it comes it will just be momentary thoughts that will pass through my conscience and as they go by I latch on to it delve a little deeper and experience an overwhelming amount of⌠IDK what to call it but it feels very powerful so much so that it brings me to tears⌠I donât know exactly what the future holds but I think that is what makes this so great! I just keep my mind open Like apple IOS Systems letting everything come and go as it pleases when something goes by that strikes me, I latch on and donât let go. Its weird how it all happens.
Steve Jobs once said that if he had never had an acid trip that he would have never of come up with the operating system for Apple and after explaining to you what I do as a spiritual and destiny seeking process I believe was his thought process as well. This in of itself is what I think they mean when they say to keep an open mind. Just so you know I didnât come up with that little bit about the late Mr. Jobs by plan it just came to me when thinking about how to have, use and keep an open mind.
The reason I explained this to you was because this is how I Pray! After I pray I sit still with an open mind allowing multiple ideas thoughts and perspectives to pass through my brain⌠until like an IOS operating system, something speaks to me⌠when I latch on to it, focus on what it means and what it will mean⌠âI Get Those Goosebumps Everytimeâ (Goosebumps, Travis Scott, feat. Kendrick Lamar, Birds in the Trap Sing Mcknight, 2016). This is how you know! A little extra for ya, when I went to look up the info for my first Hip Hop citation it was 11:11 lol there they go again⌠its really a cool feeling!
Can someone tell me if that APA or MLA? Ya know what!! Eff IT!! None of my writing is orthodox, besides I kinda like the way I did it haha
Kid Cudiâs new video just dropped and I couldnât be more amazed with all of the hidden messages that are in there. He is officially the man on the moon. Passion pain and demon slaying like a maniac on the pursuit of happiness. Love that DUDE!!
Thatâs all I got for 12-16-2020 Five More DaysâŚ
LOVE & PEACE
Songs
Heaven On Earth â Kid Cudi
Goosebumps â Travis Scott, feat. Kendrick Lamar
Dirty Heads â Sound Of Change
Just so you know the only thing I added this time other the cleaning up what I had already written was the praying part. Although I originally remember that being the purpose as to why I wrote what I did looking at it today March 2nd 2021 it wasnât there⌠have a great day everyone. Ill post this on 3/3/2021
I've added parts to the story on my business cards and will leave then random places, what you do with them is up to you but I think It would be cool for those who want to stop me to have to work extra hard just like they make me!! Â
LOVE

50 things to be thankful for in 2018
There's no denying 2018 has absolutely tested our patience, but it turns out the year hasn't been complete trash.
Beyond some of the most important aspects of life like your loved ones and your health, 2018 has truly given us a lot of good. From social justice initiatives like Time's Up and March for Our Lives, to pop culture masterpieces like Queer Eye, Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again, and "thank u, next," the year had its share of hopeful, joyous, entertaining, and positive moments.
So when times get tough and it feels like there's not much to be happy about in the world, here are 50 things to be thankful for.
SEE ALSO: The internet's best tips for how to be kind on World Kindness Day
1. Time's Up launched. 2018 started off strong with a group of more than 300 women in the entertainment industry coming together to form Time's Up â an initiative dedicated to standing up against sexual harassment.
I stand with women across every industry to say #TIMESUP on abuse, harassment, marginalization and underrepresentation. â°@TIMESUPNOW https://t.co/4zd5g2ByU0 pic.twitter.com/0h8ojLOq9U
â kerry washington (@kerrywashington) January 1, 2018
2. Laverne Cox made history on the cover of Cosmo. In January, actress and producer Laverne Cox also made history as the first ever trans covergirl for Cosmopolitan Magazine. Cox graced the cover of Cosmo South Africa's February issue.
3. The Fab Five came into our lives. It may feel like Jonathan Van Ness, Tan France, Karamo Brown, Bobby Berk, and Antoni Porowski have been inspiring us all to eat, dress, groom, self-love, and decorate to the best of our abilities for a lifetime, but Netflix's Queer Eye reboot only premiered in Feb. 2018.
4. Drake's "God's Plan" music video. Remember pre-Meek Mill beef when Drake gave away nearly one million dollars and filmed himself doing all those good deeds like paying for people's groceries? That was nice!
5. The Parkland teens. Though 2018 was full of an unfathomable amount of tragedy and gun violence, Â the year also inspired a heartwarming amount of youth activism in America. After the deadly Parkland shooting in February, a group of teen survivors from the Florida high school shooting has consistently stood up to government officials and publicly advocated for gun control.

This year alone they've formed March for Our Lives, led school walkouts, inspired others (both young and old) to register to vote and protest gun violence, and even inspired the Obama's to write a heartfelt entry in the Time 100 issue.
6. Mirai Nagasu landed a triple axel. The Winter Olympics also took place this year! There were many standout moments but Mirai Nagasu absolutely slayed, making history by becoming the first U.S. woman to land a triple axel in the Winter Olympics. Thankful we got to witness this moment.
7. Black Panther came out. We were truly blessed this year by the arrival of the record-breaking Marvel's cinematic masterpiece, Black Panther, and the talented actors, fierce as hell soundtrack, and on-screen representation it brought to our world.
8. Jordan Peele's Oscar win. Speaking of movies, Peele's film Get Out won "Best Original Screenplay" this year, making him the first black screenwriter to receive the award.
9. The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate wait is almost over. The highly anticipated video game is set to come out for Nintendo Switch on Dec. 7.
10. Beto O'Rourke. 2018 was the year of Beto, burgers, and a BeyoncĂŠ midterms endorsement.
We just want to say thank you to everyone who made this possible. Everyone who made us feel hopeful, everyone who inspired us. Everyone who became the most amazing campaign we could have ever hoped to belong to. Grateful that we got to do this with you. We love you. Goodnight! pic.twitter.com/1j6JnhtP0f
â Beto O'Rourke (@BetoORourke) November 7, 2018
11. A Quiet Place. John Krasinski directed and starred in a horror film alongside his IRL wife that was so quiet and terrifying people were too nervous to eat snacks in theaters. What a time to be alive.
12. Kendrick Lamar won a Pulitzer. Remember when the rapper was awarded the 2018 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his fourth studio album, DAMN? Hell yeah!
13. BeyoncĂŠ at Coachella. Beychella was THIS YEAR. We knew she would slay but nothing prepared us for the sheer magnitude of her powerhouse performance, or Destiny's Child, or the movement she inspired.
14. The Royal Wedding. When the world needed a distraction from the bad and an escape from reality, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were there for us. And for that we thank them.
15. Brooklyn Nine-Nine was saved. For several terrible, horrible, no good, very bad hours Brooklyn Nine-Nine was cancelled. But thankfully, after a whole lot of love from fans, NBC picked it up for a sixth season.

Image: fox
16. Won't You Be My Neighbor reminded us of Mr. Rogers' magic. We needed a heavy dose of Fred Rogers' pure and wholesome goodness to get us through the year and this film did just the trick.
17. Ava DuVernay made history. DuVernay's adaptation of A Wrinkle In Time led her to become the first black woman to direct a film that grossed more than $100 million at the box office.
18. The world is finally taking action against plastic pollution. Plastic straw bans are spreading across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Businesses like McDonald's and Starbucks are even getting on board the movement.Â
19. We still have dogs. No matter how bad things get we still have furry companions to turn to, and play with, and occasionally throw cheese on.
20. Eighth Grade filled us with middle school anxiety. Bo Burnham's Eighth Grade reminded adults how stressful growing up can be and gave teens an emotional look at middle school through a more relatable lens.

Image: a24
21. Crazy Rich Asians was a smashing success. The film dominated box office sales and served as an important milestone for Asian representation in American pop culture. And guess what? It's getting a sequel.
22. Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again! Love. Pregnancy. Death. Flashbacks. Dancing. Singing. Abba. Meryl. Cher. Andy GarcĂa. Help!
23. Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra. 2018 has seen the rise (Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin) and fall (Ariana and Pete) of celebrity relationships. But through the ups and downs of the year Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra's love never seemed to waiver. We're thankful this nice, soon-to-be-wed couple is here to restore our faith in love.
24. LeBron James opened up a school. The NBA star opened his "I Promise" school in Akron, Ohio, to give 240 third and fourth grade students a life-changing educational opportunity.
25. To All The Boys I've Loved Before captured our hearts. Netflix introduced the world to the film adaptation of Jenny Han's young adult book and after Peter Kavinsky's "woah woah woah," our hearts will never be the same. Not to mention it inspired dozens of Lara Jean Halloween costumes.

26. That quirky, super high-maintenance cat was adopted. Remember Bruno, the thicc, polydactyl cat that Wright Way Rescue Animal Shelter in Morton Grove, Illinois, was trying to find a home? He found one :').
27. A sixgill shark was discovered. This is cool because most sharks have five gills. It's also a reminder that we should be thankful for oceanographers, researchers, and all those who explore the our vast and mysterious oceans.
28. India strikes down gay sex ban. On Sept. 6, members of India's Supreme Court unanimously voted to make the landmark ruling that eliminates the ban on consensual gay sex.
29. Moth memes lit up our lives. The year was filled with good memes but those moth/lamp memes? Pure joy.
30. Amy Sherman-Palladino and all those Emmys. Amy Sherman-Palladino has always been genius. Gilmore Girls? Bun Heads? Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life? It's about time she's properly celebrated, so we're thankful The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won four Emmys. We are also thankful for her husband, Dan Palladino.

Image: Rich Fury/Getty Images
31. Twitter did one good thing. We have no edit button and there's still bots and harassment a-plenty, but at the very least, Twitter brought back the chronological timeline.
32. Gritty came into our lives. Can anyone even remember a world without the Philadelphia Flyers' new hairy orange mascot?
33. The Office is back ... sort of. While fans of the NBC comedy are still holding out hope for a revival, 2018 treated those nostalgic for the days of Dunder Mifflin to a charming off-broadway musical.
34. Speaking of The Office â be thankful for Steve Carell. He stars with TimothĂŠe Chalamet and Amy Ryan (Holly Flax) in Beautiful Boy. He's got Welcome to Marwen coming out, which looks, uh interesting. He's on SNL. And he's making his triumphant return to television!
35. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper gave us life. A Star Is Born came out this year, along with a kickass soundtrack and some perfect memes. We will never be the same.
youtube
36. Fat Bear Week ran our lives for 7 days. Much love to all the fat bears out there who distracted us for an entire week just by living their lives.Â
37. This throwback baked potato costume. Halloween costumes are great but this throwback baked potato get-up really made us smile.
38. Thankful for the hot duck in Central Park. We thought we lost him, but he's back again. <3
39. We have a new anthem: "Party For One." How did Carly Rae Jepsen know we were in desperate need of a song to dance in our underwear and eat a large pizza alone to? And the music video! UGH!
40. And there's no musical praise without discussing Ariana Grande. The warrior of 2018, Ariana Grande, has given fans so much love, inspiration, and hope throughout the year. Not to mention, the ultimate independent BOP: "thank u, next."
iâm so ..... fuckin ..... grateful
â Ariana Grande (@ArianaGrande) November 11, 2018
41. BDE came to be. Speaking adjacently of Pete Davidson, for better or worse 2018 also gave us Big Dick Energy and that's something we'll never forget.
42. Netflix still delivers. Netflix has an entertaining social media presence and continues to create quality original shows and movies.
43. There was an increase in voter turnout. 2018 proved Americans are standing up for what they believe in and exercising their right to vote. Voter turnout for midterm elections reached a 50-year high, and young people voted at historic rates.
44. Midterm results showed a refreshing amount of diversity. It was a night of historic firsts â from over 100 women elected to Congress (the highest number ever) to wins for the LGBTQ community and more.
45. The Detective Pikachu trailer looks delightful. Another cute as hell movie to look forward to? Yes please.
youtube
46. Cher's Twitter is hilarious. Twitter is sometime awful but not Cher's account. That's always good.
47. All of the books. The world has so many books just waiting to be read â books for when you're mad at the patriarchy, books for hikers, books all about pride. And some great books written this year.
48. All of the great TV shows. Streaming aside, there are dozens of phenomenal shows airing on television this year, like Superstore, The Good Place, This Is Us, Killing Eve, and more.
49. Sports are still a thing! We've got football, we've got soccer, we've got basketball, baseball, hockey, and so many more. Sports bring people together!
50. All the people working to keep others safe, informed, and up-to-date with the news. It's been a tough year for news, mass shootings, and natural disasters, which is why we're thankful for all the hard working journalists, reporters, news anchors, first responders, weather forecasters, and hurricane scientists.
So remember: No matter how bad things may seem there are always some bright spots in the world.

Snarky Recap - Thunderbirds Are Go: âThe Man From TB5â˛
The One Where TAG Meets 007.
This episode takes us to a quiet moment on Tracy Island where Mother Hen Scott is apparently babysitting the Terrible Two. You can tell Scott is in a good mood because heâs letting Gordon sit on their fatherâs desk like an overgrown toddler - while Alan is seated nearby, fiddling with a tablet.
The peace and quiet is interrupted by a phone call from a very smartly dressed Lady Penelope. Cue Gordonâs ears perking up like an excited lap dogâs. Bless this precious squid boy and his eternal Penny crush.
âDid I hear party? Do you need a date? I can be there in no time.â Gordon shamelessly inviting himself. Also, maybe itâs time you went and took a few cues from the Flirt Sensei of Tracy Island, who happens to be sitting right next to you.
âThank you, Gordon. But I already have a date.â Who is clearly quite thrilled to be here.Â
GORDONâS FACE. I AM DEAD.Â
âBUT I AM THE OBVIOUS CHOICE.â Modesty is a lovely virtue, Gordo. Sounds like someone should listen to a certain Kendrick Lamar song to get their feet back on the ground.
Guess who will be taking over space monitoring duty?
Yep, this day simply couldnât get worse for poor Gordon. And just when Alan is being smug about Gordonâs bad luck...
âAnd who do you think is taking him up there?â Sounds like the Terrible Two are going on a little space adventure. *rubs hands*
Cut to what would be an impossible feat of architecture in our world, but not so in the TAG future.Â
Brains popping up to inquire about the 007 worthy gadget tux he made for John only to be told that it fits just fine.
âBut didnât you notice all the cool hidden functions? Like the secret radio in your collar!â Poor Brains. He shouldâve known that Serious Space Trash was not going to be interested in all that high tech spy stuff.
Johnâs illusion regarding the scale and privacy of the event is about to be shattered in 3, 2, 1...
âInternational Rescue. I have a situationâ THE GLORIOUS AWKWARDNESS THAT IS JOHN TRACY. ASDFGHJKL.
âCommunications is my job, I talk to people all over the world. Iâd just rather do it from space.â We are all John. Fellow introverts, unite. Separately.Â
Bernard Bottomsley: âLady Penelope! You do like to elevate a party.â OH DEAR, SOUND THE BAD PUN KLAXON.
Enter Brains giving John a âtourâ of his high tech tux.
âAnd did I mention the cufflinks?â
âWill they make me invisible to crowds?â Aww John.Â
The exact moment you realise people are staring at you not because you're a socially challenged and smartly dressed spaceman but because you were just talking (in)to your suit. I CANNOT HANDLE JOHN BEING SOCIALLY AWKWARD IT IS SIMPLY TOO MUCH PLEASE SEND HELP.
Meanwhile, back on Tracy Island, the Terrible Two are prepping for space monitoring duty. And so far things are going just fine.
âBut why not take Johnâs way up?â Well, Gordon, youâre about to find out. The answer is called sassy!EOS.
âEOS, lower the space elevator, please.â
IâM AFRAID I CANâT DO THAT, GORDON.
âVoice print not recognized. Palm print not recognized - bit dirty donât you think? Try the facial scanner.â
Followed by... âHair style not recognized. And not very stylish.â
Gordon: âWe speak of this to no one.âÂ
Me: *CACKLING*
Back to Penelopeâs posh party, where John being himself just managed to shut down a cringe-worthy conversation.
And then thereâs this unlikely detective duo. Sherbert, the stumpy nosed Watson to Parkerâs savvy Sherlock. BLESS. They're about to make a very important and dangerous discovery.
But up in orbit, the Terrible Two are facing some trouble of their own.
EOS taking her sweet time to open the airlock. While sounding every so concerned about the boysâ safety.
Gordon is not impressed. GORDONâS FACIAL EXPRESSIONS CONTINUE TO SLAY ME. OH MAN WHAT IS THIS EPISODE EVEN.
Just when they thought they could finally enter Thunderbird 5... HI, I DIDNâT HEAR YOU SAY THE MAGIC WORD.
Alan has had enough and proceeds to call John. âYour housekeeper would like an access code.â
A clearly exasperated John:Â âThe code is EOS let them in or Iâll swap your processors with a pocket calculator.â BA-ZIN-GA.
The party, meanwhile, has moved on to the main bidding event. Before long, however, a familiar face reveals his master plan to rob the guests. Ah, the Hood. Shouldâve known you couldnât resist crashing this party. (No pun intended)
âWho exactly are you?â
THE NAME IS TRACY. JOHN TRACY. *James Bond theme intensifies*
You count on Parker to cause a suitable distraction to allow John to stealthily sneak outside.
Not a spy mission, eh 00-Trash?
Tracy Island and Thunderbird 5 begin to notice that something is off when they canât reach John. Time for Kayo to shine. MY QUEEN. *chinhands*
Just how desperate do you have to be when you take tight-rope walking a glacier over those crowds. Oh John.
The Hood is about to conclude business when Mr Bottomsley attempts to be a hero but fails miserably, thus setting off the laser cutters while the Hood and his henchmen graciously vacate the premises.
MAGNETS. HOW DO THEY WORK.
Just when youâd forgotten about that jamming bubble... Kayo losing control had me on the edge of my seat there.
âIf my ship is useless, Iâll just lose my ship.â YASSS STEALTH QUEEN, SLAY IT.
Penny giving Bottomsley a lesson in humility and responsibility. So much female badassery going on, my poor feels canât take it.
Fast forward to Kayo picking off the Hoodâs accomplishes one by one before disabling the Hoodâs scheme. Majestic, absolutely majestic. Something tells me that getting on Kayoâs bad side (for instance during That Time Of The Month) would most certainly land you in the Tracy Island infirmary.
And then thereâs the following piece of brilliant dialogue:
John: âAny suggestions on how to bring down a ten tonne rock?â
Lady P:Â âSurely you have something up your sleeve?â
Itâs interesting to see that even though Kayo once again managed to thwart the Hoodâs plans, he canât seem to legitimately hurt her. Just an angry shove and heâs off. Family ties are still strong and thatâs a very intriguing observation IMHO.
Johnâs laser antics may have stalled the inevitable but not for much longer...
Penny and Parker helplessly looking on as the chateau and our heroic Space Trash plunge into the icy depths.
But have no fear, big bro Scott is here!
âI got you... party boy.â EHEHEHEHE. Theyâre not gonna let him live that one down for a looooong time to come.
âThanks, Scott. Just put me down anywhere.â *Scott moves closer to the crowded platform*Â âANYWHERE BUT HEREâ *John climbs further up the grappling cable*
UGH JOHN STAHP.
Skip to... Tracy Island, where EOSÂ âhas something sheâd like to sayâ. And sounding genuinely remorseful, it seems. *cough cough*
Brains scooting off to improve the tuxâs gadgets. NERD.
Penelope suggesting she forward the dozens of messages inviting the mystery hero to a party as a chance to see the world, which is countered by John saying that the world looks just fine from Thunderbird 5. Comfort zone: re-enabled. AWW SPACE TRASH. *chinhands*
This was hands down one of the best episodes in the history of TAG so far. Maybe even made it into my personal top 5. What a ride! Penny being her usual glamorous badass self, Parker and Sherbert cooperating like a quirky detective duo, our socially challenged ginger space spy having to battle both the Hood and a crippling fear of crowds. Oh my feels. *hugs mug of ginger tea*

Trick Or Treat - Off The Charts
"Welcome ladies and gentleman to another round of Off The Charts! With Halloween right around the corner, we elected to give this week's build-up to Week 9 a frightful theme. While we don't have the honor to have Mr. Kace Sanders giving us his best impression of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as he breaks down the year so far; we do however have some sepulchral stand your hair on the back of your neck discussions."
"Isn't it spooky how coincidently some of these teams have been so spine-chillingly dreadful around a time we're all supposed to be scared? Some teams certainly will have their work cut out for them the rest of the year, thereâs still enough football for teams to make late pushes for the postseason which only means playoff races will start to heat up, in earnest, now that itâs almost November. This weeks segment will focus on the some Halloween themes for teams and players, while we don't do this every year, perhaps we should start handing out our tricks and treats for the teams of the Elite Fantasy League. Would you all mind a handful of fearsomely break downs every Halloween season?"
"If you want that then all you got to do is follow these directions to compile a formula that calls for 3 ounces of mummy dust otherwise known as Adam Vinatieri, 10 hairs from big black cat Leonard Williams, 6 G.O.A.T bleats from Tom Brady, and 1 supernatural run by beast mode, Marshawn Lynch. I wish you all good luck in that endeavor - but without further ado let's take a look at some of these tricks-and-treats."
"Ghoulish goodies have been a treat for several teams this year, more specifically road teams. Maybe itâs time we soften the stance on the importance of home-field advantage. Through Week 8, road teams are above .500, with an overall record of 63/58/0. Thatâs the most road victories through eight weeks in EFL history. Only one team, Rainelo Hawks are undefeated at home. Only two seasons have taken place in which road teams have finished with a winning record, though none of them have happened since 2010. The team's on the road this week (The Busy Killers, Yuba City Sultans, Straight Edge Society, HellbentKronik, The Canadian Cripplers, Balls Deep, Thunderbuddy4Life, and Hyrule Empire) will hope to serve up a few tricks to opposing teams in Week 9 contests. A specific team that has caused October nightmares for opposing offenses is deserving of all the treats that they want. Pretty much everyone expects Evolution to be among the best-coached and most efficient teams year in and year out. But Hyrule Empire has been one of the biggest surprises so far, remaining one of the top teams in 2019 and having a defense that has dubbed the boogeymen, Hyrule Empire has now gone 3-1 against teams in the Walsh division, the tough division in the league so far and silenced the media fare around PURPLEHAZE. Coach Diamond is a brilliant defensive mind and has Hyrule Empire dominating in sacks, takeaways, and total yards allowed. Not only that but this offense is averaging 181.1 rushing yards per game and time of possession is up to 34:31, both of which are second-best in the league. Hyrule Empire has started to lay waste to teams finishing with an October record of 4/1/0. I'd say the last treats given should be to the players vying for the league-MVP. It seems like the consensus for the player who most deserves the most valuable player award changes each week. At varying times, quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers (Yuba City Sultans), Deshaun Watson (BroncosTillDeath), Lamar Jackson (Straight Edge Society), Russell Wilson (Hyrule Empire), Dak Prescott (The Busy Killers) or Patrick Mahomes (The Busy Killers) each had a legitimate argument. Evolution running back Christian McCaffrey and Black Hole Son receiver Michael Thomas is even getting some love in the conversation, too. Itâs almost as if each player is trying to one-up the field, and it has been fun to watch."
"As for the ones who deserve no treats and have only given us tricks and unnerving play first goes to the refereeing and rule changes. The rule that coaches could challenge pass interference calls brought optimism that the league would be taking legitimate steps to correct the inconsistency associated with the enforcement of fouls. The problem has been that the rule change has been mostly for show. Just this past weekend, only the second successful pass interference call was overturned, despite there being well more than 20 challenges. In many cases, there appeared to be a clear case for a foul. Thatâs why the league used the âclear and obviousâ language when it crafted the rule. Coaches should use the first half of the season as an indication that unless a player gets held all the way down field, they should hold onto their red challenge flags. The clear message is that unless itâs an egregious case, any challenge is going to be a waste of a timeout and ultamtely a trick from the league to the coaches. Wizardly play calling has been a treat for us but there have been a ton of plays that have encited the loudest boos beyond the grave from die-hard fans even in death. Aside from Matt LaFleur, the coach of the 6/2/0 Yuba City Sultans, and Sean McVay who has Ballsdeep at an even .500; it has been rough for rookie coaches who have combined for a 10-23 record through Week 8 this year. Two of those teams, Cripplers and Straight Edge Society, are winless and in the middle of complete rebuilds. Throw in HellbentKronik, and itâs safe to expect multiple years before any of them are legitimately competitive in their divisions. Buds Bums are a different case in that they have young talent at key positions and have fallen well below of expectations. Their schedule does lighten and become easier, so Chicago should in theory improve. But thereâs no other way to paint the start of the season for Buds Bums than as a letdown. Kickers have decided to dress-up earlier for Halloween as unreliable Kickers - If it seems like it has been a bad year for kickers in the EFL, itâs because it has. This season has seen the highest number of missed combined kicks, field goals and extra points included through Week 8 since 2008 with 121 misfires. That mark is 12 more than the 109 that happened through eight weeks in both 2007 and 2017. It says a lot that even long-time kickers are going through troubles. Adam Vinatieri has battled inconsistency all year and may be time for that mummy to hang up his wrappings and call it a career. Teams who won in the offseason haven't panned out yet, geared toward VanillaGorillas and The Canadian Cripplers. VanillaGorillas made a splash by adding receiver Odell Beckham Jr., Luke Kuechly, and traded for Mitchell Trubisky and the Cripplers signed running back LeâVeon Bell, Drew Brees, and receiver Amari Cooper. Instead of seeing the infusion of talent gelling right away, both teams have sputtered. The Cripplers have dealt with injuries, but Bellâs production has been minimal. And VanillaGorillas added all those players but didnât fix its offensive line, and turnovers and unforced errors remain serious issues. This is yet another reason why Evolution is so successful; they make quiet but calculated decisions in free agency and donât feel the need to overpay. Haunted by their recent success Thunderbuddy4Life was expecting to compete for another Super Bowl. They have an elite quarterback in place, they have dynamic skill-position players. They have a stout defense that has star talent, including defensive end Nick Bosa. Yet Thunderbuddy4Life is 3/5/0 and in fourth place in the Shula division. The good news is that they are 3/0/0 in the division. That means that if Thunderbuddy4Life can get hot and rip off some victories they could get back in the playoff picture fast. Straight Edge Society has skill and talent all around but haven't been able to put it on the field. It has been a hell of a season so far and horrifying to watch. They could easily be 4/4/0 as their margin of losses has been the closest in the league after eight weeks. It's hard to wonder what they need to do to fix things but with recent injuries it is almost certain they will remain six-feet-under the rest of the season and look to 2020 for a bounce back."
"There are so many scares and otherworldly plays that have occured this season so far and PURPLEHAZE, Black Hole Son, and Yuba City Sultans have been bright spots in this league who has had somewhat of an upside down year. Black Hole Son a team who is supposed to be historically bad year in and year out now is slaying teams and getting the apperication they deserve. Yuba City Sultans with Rodgers is taking the league by storm again. Thrilling finishes and wizardly play - Rodgers is like Harry Potter slaying Voldemort on that field, he is magically making a difference, changing the way how this team is ran and putting them back into the talk of Super Bowl. PURPLEHAZE lost but they are still looking like a true contender and have the pieces to bounce back, they should be there when the smoke clears and the Postseason starts."
"As we wrap up this weeked Off The Chart Podcast, we have to highlight we didn't get to talk about everyone but as always we post our podcasts on our blog site and below the enscripted version will be side notes on those teams. Tomorrow we get a chance to see Thunderbuddy4Life take on PURPLEHAZE in a Halloween match-up. Two defenses that are scary strong and looking to diminate making their claim as the ones who deserve all the treats."
Side Notes
The Busy Killers - The Busy Killers have not been able to find consistency other the last four weeks and it has given way to wonder if they will be sellers toward the trade deadline coming up. If they aren't in contention around Thanksgiving time it may be a good chance to part ways with big names and secure top picks for 2020.
HellbentKronik - At 3/5/0 they have Kyler Murray treading in the right direction with a tough match up against former division rival Evolution they hope to continue their two-game winning streak against a stingy Miami defense.
BroncosTillDeath - They have found themselves on the winning column last week and a first time match-up against Balls Deep it is an intriguing match. Both teams seem to have found a formula to win and win every week if everything can come to live from the practice field to the actual field. BroncosTillDeath has some of the best players and they will look to give this young franchise a wake up call at home in Mile-High.
LilShupeScoresBIGPoints - At 4/4/0 they are still in the thick of things but it has been shaky for them with streaming quarterback. Josh Allen seems to be the guy but after a tough loss last week in dominating fashion one has to wonder will they make a change at the Quarterback position or will the muster the adversity with Josh Allen and hope for a turn around in a big match against The Busy Killers who else are in need of a W.

Brent Luysterâs three life sentences get longer
Find out how to get the best plumber in Vancouver Washington
Convicted triple murderer Brent Luyster was sentenced Monday in federal court to 10 years in prison, to run consecutively to his three life sentences, for illegal weapons possession.
In November, a federal jury found Luyster, 38, guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm and being a felon in possession of ammunition following a three-day trial in U.S. District Court in Tacoma. He was acquitted on another count of being a felon in possession of ammunition.
Luyster will serve a total term of three life sentences plus nearly 64 years in prison, according to the federal judgement. The federal sentence will follow his state sentence.
âThe hatred and violence embodied by this defendant is truly abhorrent,â U.S. Attorney Brian T. Moran said in a written statement. âThis sentence is a safety net â to hold him accountable for his federal crimes â but also to ensure that regardless of his state convictions and sentence, Brent Luyster will remain locked up to protect our communities.â
Luysterâs now-former girlfriend, Andrea Sibley, 29, was sentenced in May to about a year in federal prison for purchasing at least nine firearms for him between March 2015 and May 2016 in Clark and Cowlitz counties. She previously pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting a felon in possession of a firearm and making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm, according to court records.
None of the nine firearms Sibley purchased were used in the July 2016 slayings of Luysterâs best friend, Zachary David Thompson, 36; friend Joseph Mark LaMar, 38; and LaMarâs partner, Janell Renee Knight, 43, at LaMarâs home southeast of Woodland. Luyster also shot Thompsonâs partner, Breanne Leigh, then 32, in the face, but she survived.
The firearm used in the shooting was never recovered.
Luyster was convicted in Clark County Superior Court of three counts of aggravated murder and is serving three consecutive life sentences, without the possibility of release, plus another nearly 54 years for attempted first-degree murder and first- and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.
His federal case stems from him using some of the firearms Sibley bought to allegedly assault a former girlfriend in May 2016 at his Longview home. Luyster reportedly punched and pistol-whipped the woman, and fired shots at her as she ran from the home, court records say.
According to evidence presented at his federal trial, Cowlitz County sheriffâs deputies discovered the firearms and ammunition after responding May 16, 2017, for a woman who reported being assaulted. Deputies found Luyster on a hillside behind the house, at which time he surrendered.
Deputies found ammunition in his pockets and recovered three firearms: a Bushmaster rifle, Glock .40-caliber handgun and Kel-Tec 12-gauge shotgun. A search of his home turned up five more rifles and a handgun. Luyster, who had previous felony convictions, was prohibited from possessing firearms.
Luyster did not testify during his federal trial and was never prosecuted for the alleged assault against his ex-girlfriend.
âThe events on May 16, 2017, culminated a long unbroken history of gun related violence by the defendant, Brent Luyster. Despite being sentenced multiple times for violent felonies, and being advised that he was prohibited from possessing a firearm, Luyster ignored the law and repeatedly acquired firearms and engaged in violent firearm conduct.
âEven while Luyster was on release pending trial for his assault ⌠Luyster armed himself with a .45 caliber handgun, shot and killed three of his friends, and seriously wounded a fourth person,â the governmentâs sentencing memorandum reads.
The U.S. Attorneyâs Office also referenced an issue that came up during Luysterâs trial.
According to its sentencing memorandum, the U.S. Marshal Service received a tip that Luyster told another inmate that âsomething big was going to happen in court.â The inmate was subsequently interviewed and said Luyster told him he wanted to stay in federal prison because he liked it better than state prison.
The inmate said Luyster claimed he was planning to kill the judge or an officer at the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, and said he had been smuggling items between court and the federal detention center, including a large paper clip. Luysterâs cell was searched and officers found two makeshift weapons â a knife and something that looked like a screwdriver. The knife was made by cutting out the frame from his cell bed, the sentencing memorandum states.
The U.S. Attorneyâs Office recommended Luyster get 17½ years in federal prison, citing his âactions in this case and his history of using firearms to injure and terrorize others,â the sentencing memorandum reads, adding that Luyster is incapable of reforming.
In itâs sentencing memorandum, the defense asserted that the âgovernment exercised substantial resources to add more convictions to Mr. Luysterâs record and add more prison time to his three life sentences.â
Defense attorney Casey M. Arbenz, of Puget Law Group, argued the judge should not consider the alleged assault against Luysterâs ex-girlfriend, the ammunition associated with the charge he was acquitted of, or allegations he was planning to try to kill the judge or a guard.
âWhile such allegations are certainly concerning, where no charges, nor evidence or testimony have been brought forward in support of the allegations, and Mr. Luyster has had no opportunity to defend against the accusations, it is requested that this court not consider such conduct in handing down Mr. Luysterâs sentence,â the sentencing memorandum reads.
Arbenz asked that his client receive a little more than nine years in prison.
Luyster, a violent, known white supremacist, has a long criminal history, including racially motivated attacks. In 2001, he beat a black man who came onto his property in search of his dogs. He was convicted four years later of malicious harassment for shooting a black man in the leg. Then, in 2014, he threatened a black man in a bar, according to the U.S. Attorneyâs Office.

Favorite Music of 2017

Happy New Years everybody!Â
After living under a rock for the last two years I was able to escape the confines of nursing school and I made a concerted effort to dive into my musical love with a vengeance. I was lucky enough to see Radiohead, Kendrick Lamar, Bonobo, Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, Thrice, and Circa Survive in what was one of my most successful live music years in ages. Iâve once again compiled a list of my favorite music of the last year in the hopes you discover a few gems you may have missed out on. Â Let me know any recommendations of your own as Iâm clearly missing so much and I love to know what you enjoyed from 2017. Â I look forward to another fruitful year in music in 2018 and hope the same for you as well, cheers!
Apple Music Playlist Of My Favorite Music of 2017
25) Iman Omari - Ihy

Los Angeles native Omari has already collaborated with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Ty Dolla $ign, and Mac Miller and continues to push his trademark sound through his latest release. Neo-R&B, trip hop, soul with plenty of sampling, itâs difficult to explain this album (which is a good thing). The result is at times hypnotic like the track 'Heaven', or one of the best chill/hang out tracks to play with friends 'Move Too Fast'. The perfect album to listen to on a lazy day still in bed with some headphones.Â
Listen to 'Move Too Fast (feat. Anna Wise)'.
24) Fleet Foxes - Crack-Up

Robin Pecknold and company return after a six-year absence with an expansive soundscape full of intricate and ambitious layering. Thereâs so much going on and you can tell every spacious and reverb-soaked piece has been painstakingly assembled. Itâll take some patience and multiple listens to peel back the layers, but discovering another little nuanced gem you hadnât noticed before is one the the great things about this gorgeous album.Â
Listen to 'Cassius, -'.
23) Oddisee - The Iceberg

Itâs refreshing to have Amir Mohamed (aka Oddisee) help navigate the angst of the political and socially charged climate of this last year.  The prolific artist uses his blend of hip hop, funk, and soul with his insightful commentary on oppression and injustice to the forefront while still reflecting on his personal struggles and dreams.  While he demonstrates a sense of pessimism with the turn of events, this album still pushes forward with hope and optimism for better days to come.Â
Listen to 'Like Really'.Â
22) The Life and Times - The Life and Times

The pride of Kansas City, this three piece delivers loud and spacey post-rock akin to Jawbox, Failure and Cave In (Antenna-era). Heavy guitar-driven hooks with booming drums, its loud and gets the job done.Â
Listen to 'Dear Linda'.Â
21) Fyfe - The Space Between

Paul Dixon always finds ways to fuze together electronic sampling, great keys, and guitar work with his trademark falsetto to create another pop masterpiece. Â Dixon also develops some sweeping darker tones reminiscent of James Blake but always knows when to rein it in with subtleness, maintaining his unique and impressive sound.Â
Listen to 'Cold Air'.Â
20) Sannhet - So Numb

Hailing from Brooklyn, this three piece has come back with a vengeance after 2015â˛s amazing release Revisionist. Instrumental post/black-metal, think of Deafheaven and Jakob with some Red Sparowes sprinkled in for good measure. Itâs sweeping, heaving, and builds up to epic crescendos. Damn, what I would give to see these guys live.Â
Listen to 'Way Out'. Â
19) Bonobo - Migration

UK producer Simon Green takes us on a trip around the world incorporating many global sounds in a more accessible and nuanced release. I was lucky enough to see Bonobo at the Granada in Lawrence earlier this year and was surprised how blown away I was by the live set list based primarily on this album. Itâs a great change of pace album and rewarding with every listen.Â
Listen to 'Kerala'.Â
18) Julien Baker - Turn Out the Lights

Ooh wee, a stripped down set up of a guitar and keys is all this singer/songwriter needs to deliver an emotional tour de force. Baker manages to bring me to my knees once again as a follow-up to the superb Sprained Ankle. Â Itâs a soul crushingly beautiful and intimate journey, Iâm excited to see how this young artist continues to grow and develop her amazing sound.Â
Listen to 'Turn Out the Lights'.Â
17) Laura Marling - Semper Femina

Itâs crazy to think that itâs been ten years since Marling released her debut Alas, I Cannot Swim as a teenager and now on her sixth solidifies why she is one of my favorite singer/songwriters. Marlingâs commanding voice and blend of folk, understated electric guitar, or sweeping orchestral set pieces create an intimate ambience and great ear candy. Listen with headphones and you get a great sense of the spacing and interactions of all the instrumentation used throughout.Â
Listen to 'Wild Fire'.Â
16) Tyler, The Creator - Flower Boy

Holy shit, I was pleasantly surprised by the direction Tyler headed for with Flower Boy. Itâs definitely a more nuanced and less abrasive approach to the always thoughtful hip hop artist. Â The album doesnât lack from an ensemble supporting cast and some of my favorite sampling/beats that Tyler has introduced. Â Donât sleep on this album, one of the best rap releases of the year.Â
Listen to '911/Mr. Lonely (feat. Frank Ocean and Steve Lacy)'.Â
15) Glassjaw - Material Control

No, youâre not tripping balls or huffed too much spray paint, Glassjaw really did finally release a new album.  Itâs been a long 15 years since Worship and Tribute but Daryl Palumbo and Justin Beck didnât skip a beat with this punishing behemoth of distortion, feedback, noise and groove laden riffs. Itâs a worthy successor and a breath of fresh air to have one of my favorite bands from high school return to kick the shit out of my eardrums. Abso-fucking-lutely worth the wait.Â
Listen to 'cut and run'. The 01:24 mark is pure sonic bliss and make me want to run through a brick wall, so fucking good.Â
14) Spotlights - Seismic

If you were a fool and didnât listen to Spotlightâs last album Tidals, go do that then check out this new beauty. Â Seismic delivers a wall of epic drone-metal with plenty of atmosphere and refreshing melody to keep it dynamic and engaging. Â If youâre a fan of Deftones, Panopticon era Isis, and Cave In you are in for a treat.Â
Listen to 'What Is This? Where Are You?'.
13) Cloakroom - Time Well

Ok, if you listened to some Spotlights as I mentioned above and youâre thinking what if there was something with a similar doom-metal sound but was also part shoegazing and emo? Â Well you hit the sonic lottery, my friend. The new Cloakroom creates a perfect harmony of the three to create a hauntingly loud, sad, and overwhelming experience. They also add in the acoustic track 'The Sun Wonât Let Us Go' to change things up, and goddamn is it a soul crusher in the best possible way. Â
Listen to 'Big World'. Â
12) Less Art - Strangled Light

This one is one of my dream team lineups that somehow just came into existence to my delight. Ian Miller and Jon Howell of Kowloon Walled City, the Breckenridge brothers of Thrice, and Mike Minnick of Curl Up & Die unleash an aggressive and biting post-hardcore juggernaut. Â Itâs incredibly tight and replaces the measured and patient approach heard on Kowloonâs albums with a sense of urgency and desperation. Â Heavy music fans, this is a must listen.Â
Listen to 'Pessimism as Denial'.Â
11) Pile - A Hairshirt of Purpose

Iâm a pretty big dummy for sleeping on this band for so long but Iâve remedied that by checking out A Hairshirt of Purpose.  Itâs a weird kind of post-punk, taking one on a tour of sonic peaks and valleys through loud aggressive pieces while juxtaposing it with mellow detours.  I hear influences from Neutral Milk Hotel, Stnng, and Q and Not U. Itâs all over the place, but that works to disarm the listener and blow them away with some amazing build-ups that pay off beautifully.Â
Listen to 'Leaning On a Wheel'.Â
10) Turnover - Good Nature

Turnoverâs last album, Peripheral Vision, was one of my favorite albums of 2015 so expectations were pretty high for Good Nature and it didnât disappoint. Â Clean, catchy, and dreamy pop-laden riffs along with Austin Getzâs warm vocals make this the perfect album to listen to while road tripping in the summer with the windows down.Â
Listen to 'Breeze'.  Â
9) Mogwai - Every Countryâs Sun

Mogwai return with a proper album release following last yearâs documentary score to Atomic. Â This new album strips a lot of the vocals and electronics (especially in the second half) to deliver a more grungy, loud, and distorted edge reminiscent of their early works. They sound rejuvenated and I was lucky enough to watch them live in Omaha in November. It was an overwhelming experience and further cemented Mogwai as one of the three or four most important and influential bands in my life. Â Stewart Braithwaite and company deliver another solid addition to their storied musical cannon.Â
Listen to 'Old Poisons'.Â
8) Circa Survive - The Amulet

Hot damn, thereâs something about Circa that keeps these guys getting better and better with each new release.  They just seem to play even tighter and the effects-driven guitar interplay between Ekstrom and Frangicetto on tracks like 'Tunnel Vision', 'Stay', and the chorus of 'The Amulet' is so fucking satisfying to listen to.  I was able to catch Circa on tour with Thrice in December at the Uptown in KC and they once again slayed it. Â
Listen to âThe Amuletâ.Â
7) Hundredth - RARE

Hundredth is an example of when a band completely changes its sound and musical identity and knocks it out of the fucking park. Â Previously a melodic hardcore band, their last release Rare would make it impossible to guess this was the same band. Â In itâs stead you get a shoe-gaze style post-punk vibe that still has a great driving drum attack keeping most tracks punchy and aggressive. Chadwick Johnson trades in screams for a Jeremy Enigk vocal style that makes this one of the more surprising and fantastic additions to my year end list.Â
Listen to âNeuroticâ.Â
6) Willow - The 1st

Who wouldâve thought Will Smithâs 17 year old daughter wouldâve been one of my top recommendations of this last year? Â Mixing alternative-rock, grunge, and impressive acoustic guitar work with hypnotic and commanding vocals; Willow further establishes herself as a singer/songwriting force to be reckoned with. Â
Listen to âIsraelâ.Â
5) Frequency Eater - Finite States

Hailing from Belgium, Owen Swerts created a monster of an album. Â Itâs instrumental mathy post-metal akin to Cloudkicker, Animals As Leaders, and Scale the Summit. Â Itâs loud, complex, and everything I love about heavy music. Â
Listen to âEnd All, Be Allâ.Â
4) David Bazan - Care

David Bazan has always been able to pierce my soul with his masterful lyricism and storytelling abilities. Â The minimalist electronic backdrop through which his vocals are delivered make for an impactful and beautiful dichotomy. Â I already bought my tickets to see Pedro the Lion in February, a great way to bring in the new year by seeing my favorite singer/songwriter of all time.Â
Listen to âLazerbeamsâ.Â
3) Elder - Reflections of a Floating World

The sunnava bitches from Elder have done it again, proggy stoner-rock or whatever you want to call it, just make sure you add masterpiece at the end. Thereâs riffs on riffs and sick-ass licks and hooks for days.  Vocals sound like some sweet metal band from the 70â˛s and the album clocks in at over an hour with just six songs.  The songs are epic in scale and thereâs so much crammed in but they do an incredible job with pacing, you wonât get bored listening to one of their 13 minute long songs. Each song is an incredible feat of engineering, thereâs at least two or three instances per song that are head-banging moments of the year. And goddamn flutes, yes, flutes in there, too. This is the shit you play while riding your flaming ship straight to the halls of Valhalla.
Listen to âThe Falling Veilâ.Â
2) Sampha - Process

After collaborations with the likes of SBTRKT, Solange, Frank Ocean, Drake, and Kanye West; British artist Sampha Sisay released his own debut back in February and itâs been in heavy rotation ever since.  Sampha creates a lush electro-R&B soundscape for each track on the album and demonstrates masterful use of his vocals by breaking his falsetto with heavy breathing on tracks like âBlood On Meâ to convey a sense of desperation and paranoia I havenât felt since At The Drive-Inâs âMetronome Arthritisâ. Then you have the raw and stripped tracks â(No One Knows Me) Like the Pianoâ and âTake Me Insideâ featuring just vocals and piano that are just fucking gorgeous.  Itâs in the upper echelons of emotional masterpieces with the likes of Blonde, A Moon Shaped Pool, and Early Riser; this album is timeless and will be a regular staple in my rotation for a very long time.Â
Listen here. Â
1) Kendrick Lamar - Damn.Â

Who wouldâve guessed that my top pick goes to Kung Fu Kenny, aka Black Turtle on his quest for the Glow? The fury unleashed by Kendrick during the bass drop in âDNA.â is my favorite musical moment of 2017 hands down. This translated to a religious experience when I got to see Kendrick live in KC last summer where tracks like âGOD.â and âFEEL.â left me floored and contemplating how can someone be that good at anything.Â
To go along with all the conspiracy theories regarding the release of DAMN., the one that came true was the fact that Kendrick intended for the listener to play the album backwards as he released the Collectorâs Edition that has the track listing in reverse.  Itâs mind blowing how well starting with âDUCKWORTH.â (which is also one of my favorite closing tracks of all time) works well as an intro to this musical experience. As Kendrick explained an in interview, âIt plays as a full story and even a better rhythm. Itâs one of my favorite rhythms and tempos within the album. Itâs something that we definitely premeditate while weâre in the studio. I donât think the story necessarily changes, I think the feel changes. The initial vibe listening from the top all the way to the bottom is ... this aggression and this attitude. You know, âDNA,â and exposing who I really am. You listen from the back end, and itâs almost the duality and the contrast of the intricate Kendrick Lamar. Both of these pieces are who I am.â
I canât think of an artist thatâs been on such a creative streak thatâs on a near mythical status at this point, but at the same time itâs really not that surprising coming from the greatest rapper of our generation.Â
Listen to âElementâ. Â

Iâm no historian. Until 10 years ago, any history occurring longer than two weeks ago all faded to foggy gray, then black. Iâm only just now finishing up my ca. sophomore history major year here.
Iâm no writer either. If Jim Ed Slay hadnât changed Mrs. Boundsâ penciled-in grades in her book while I watched the hall from the door, we both would have flunked senior English. Oh yeah, and Jim Ed changed his F to a B and mine to a dadgum C. I couldnât put two sentences together.
If I am anything, itâs a storyteller, with grammar and spelling warts included. And every story I write can only come from looking at a photograph and imagining what human nature did that day. Stories are fiction, and lore takes its liberties.
I imagined wives and children hidden out in the county for safekeeping. In small houses, shacks and gullies. Later, I read an account saying just that. I saw Oxford as the sun came up on that 1864 morning. There was no one to fear anymore. The last Yankees to see Oxford that war were back north of the Little Tallahatchie by then. The Square, Courthouse, Depot, Jacob Thompsonâs home and several others were smoldering ruins. History, or lore, tells me that Cumberland Church on South Lamar between the Square and University Avenue was the only rooftop visual downtown. I imagined a group of men on horseback gathering with not much to say. Maybe they were bitter or maybe they prayed, or both. But from that meeting, I imagined this little paragraph of loreâs:
At dawn on that hot August â64 morning-after, with the boys all dead or gone, the town decimated, their wives and children hidden out in the county, and their homes finally, mercifully burning themselves out, a group of Oxford town fathers gathered at Cumberland Church. It was decided a small party should ride out to see if anything remained of the College grounds. As the men rode toward the Lyceum, they searched for smoke through the gap in the trees in the western sky. The road widened out as they passed onto the campus proper. They galloped on faster, and soon knew that the white and black pillars in the distance were tree trunks and columns. The Lyceumâs place in our shared Oxford and Ole Miss heritage, began that very hour.

Top 35 Albums of 2016
Iâve heard several different people argue that 2016 was where the music matched the of our newly elected President: trash. While there were a fair share of tepid releases, there were even more gems and masterpieces released as well. It marked the comeback of some major industry icons, the big break from some under the radar talents, and the domination of a legend. Below you will find my ranking for the top thirty-five albums of 2016. Feel free to comment with your opinions and feedback.
35. Ariana Grande, âDangerous Womanâ â Not quite on level with her first two studio albums, D.W. takes some risks where Grande has yet to explore. While standouts âSometimesâ, âTouch Itâ, and âLeave Me Lonely (featuring Macy Gray) are true delights, her transition falls short on tracks such as the unconvincing âBad Decisionsâ, the overdrawnâI Donât Careâ, and the overrated radio-tune gem that is âSide to Sideâ. The album is probably the most evident of all of her releases that she is still trying to find her own sound, though there are some delights along her journey.
34. Shy Glizzy, âYoung Jefe 2â â One of the most anticipated projects in the urban market was âYoung Jefe 2â from Shy Glizzy. While ultimately the work doesnât offer many full length tunes that enable you to crave it, it does suffice as a guilty hip-hop pleasure for 2016. Gems such as âWaiting on My Timeâ, âRoundsâ, and âHow It Goâ prove that the rhymer can spit real life lyrics aligned with versatile concepts â a rarity amongst his generationâs peers.
33. Meghan Trainor, âThank Youâ â Trainorâs sophomore release continued her trend of radio friendly pop tunes (âNoâ, âMe Tooâ), with some lavish, soul ballads (âChampagne Problems, âI Wonât Let You Downâ) proving she why she continues to evolve as an artist. The standout track of the album is the median between these two styles, âHopeless Romanticâ, which has single written all over it. While the album didnât exceed expectations in terms of sounds, it provides curiosity to what may come of her work in the future.
32. Childish Gambino, âAwaken My Loveâ â Another highly anticipated album in the hip-hop community came from Mr. Gambino. Riding high off of the success of his television show, âAtlantaâ, he couldnât have released new music at a greater time. Rich in sounds for the eerie and dramatic, the album takes an alternative route than that of âBecause The Internetâ album, while still focusing on real life centered lyrical content.
31. Blake Shelton, âIf Iâm Honestâ â Adding to controversy this past year was the ever-blossoming relationship between superstars Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton. Sparking his album was about the relationship, the âhonestâ approach behind the album lived up to expectations in a raw, yet predictable approach to his usual content. While a pleasant listen for Shelton fans, doesnât overly add to the drama or impact of his relationship with Stefani.
30. Fifth Harmony, â7/27âł â One of the greater surprises this year was the quality behind pop girl-group, Fifth Harmonyâ. Riding off of the success of their single, âWorth Itâ, the group quickly capitalized with a sophomore release, leading to their second top-ten single, âWork From Homeâ. The album dances with balladry with the reflective standout, âWrite On Meâ, and showcases superstar powers with tracks âFlex (All In My Head)â and âNot That Kinda Girlâ featuring Fetty Wap and Missy Elliot respectively.
29. John Legend, âDarkness and Lightâ â 2014 was the biggest year of John Legendâs career. It took him to new heights after being in the music business for a decade. Taking his time to properly carve out his next release to the world, âDarkness and Lightâ shed âlightâ on where he planned to go next. While the lead single, âLove Me Nowâ, is a slight departure from his adult-contemporary work that has followed his career, the majority of the album sticks to typical John Legend formula. The tracks âOverloadâ and âPenthouse Floorâ, are singles waiting to dominate urban radio, with the assistance of Miguel and Chance The Rapper respectively.
28. Miranda Lambert, âThe Weight of These Wingsâ â One of the most consistent workers in country music is without a doubt Miranda Lambert. It isnât just because she releases new music, but she releases QUALITY good music. Need proof? Listen to these cuts from the album: âVicesâ, âWe Should Be Friendsâ, and âSmoking Jacketâ.
27. Shawn Mendes, âIlluminateâ â For his sophomore release, Mr. Mendes further embellished in the sound that made him a hit with young teens the year prior: heartwarming ballads and luscious tunes to churn. Lead by the single âTreat You Betterâ, youâll learn early that no single on the record quite tops that one, or that of âStitchesâ from yesteryear; but that doesnât mean you wonât find pleasant listens such as âPatienceâ and album-opener, âRuin.
26. Post Malone, âStoneyâ â After creating quite the buzz with âWhite Iversonâ earlier in the year, Maloneâs first full length album proved that he could handle the pressures of a new release. The album luckily doesnât focus so much on the mainstream style that itâs lead single invokes, but that doesnât say that it lacks appeal either. The Justin Bieber assisted âDeja Vuâ is one of the albums greatest gems, while listeners will surely find plenty more worth vibing to.
25. Kid Cudi, âPassion, Pain & Demon Slayingâ â It has been an interestingly rocky past few years for Kid Cudi. His personal life has been not just bait for the tabloids, but also for fellow rappers (just ask Drake). Luckily, that hasnât stopped his abilities to produce a consistent album worth waiting for. Lead by singles âFrequencyâ and âSurfinâ, the album would return Cudi to the sound that made him one of the leaders of the alternative rap game. Drawing inspiration from his first album, the album is broken into chapters. Standouts include âSwim In The Lightâ, âBaptized In Fireâ, and âCosmic Warriorâ.
24. Usher, âHard II LoveââIt had been an overwhelming four years since Usher last blessed our ears with his music. Moreover, for his traditional, old-school Usher fans, it had been well past that since they had received music that they were satisfied with. Despite your opinion on what his past had produced, his current was a steady body of work. The lead single, âNo Limitâ, showed fans the the veteran still could deliver an urban radio gem. As for his slow jams, âMissin Uâ and âTell Meâ, prove he can still sing effortlessly amongst the records in his prime. Welcome back, Usher!
23. Britney Spears, âGloryâ â To this date, Britney hasnât been able to find a sound or album that recreates the magic of âOopsâŚâ or âBritneyâ, and critics donât let her forget it. For âGloryâ, Britney let go of those antics and simply focusing on the music. From start to finish, this album easily produces Britneyâs finest collection of songs in over a decade. The songs, with the exception of the lackluster âPrivate Showâ, display an album that is a full body of work, starting with the standout âInvitationâ and its effortless transition into the G-Easy featured single, âMake Meâ. Britney also ventures into new sounds with the reggae-sexy âLove Me Downâ and âSlumber Partyâ, and delivers sonic perfection on the edgy âLiarâ. If thereâs any doubt to whether or not teen-popâs most prized possession still has it eighteen years later, listen to âGloryâ.
22. Alicia Keys, âHereâ â Itâs hard to believe Alicia Keys has been around for sixteen years. Unfortunately, for her past few releases, it has been somewhat apparent. That changed with 2016âs defiant âHereâ. The album follows no current trends whatsoever, not even that of her own past works. The album is complete with conversations and interludes to transition between the different songs. Keys confidently displays her message through rap-styled delivery, playing with the apparent change in her vocals in an array of different manners. The true gem of the entire album comes in the form of lyrically, musically, and delivery is an absolute masterpiece: âIllusion of Blissâ.
21. Fantasia, âThe Definition ofâŚâ â In search of a new-retro style sound, Fantasia produced what was a complete sleeper of the year. With production that perfectly blends with her rasp and power, the entire album gradually progresses and telling a story: the definition of the woman who is Fantasia, and not just the artist. She experiments as well with more gospel-tingled tracks, with a surprising cameo from Tye Tribette, and country music with the daring âUglyâ. Standouts include âNo Time For Itâ, âWhen I Met Youâ, and âSleeping With the One I Loveâ.
20. Travis $cott, âBirds in the Trap Sing McKnightâ â Alternative rap has become a popular sound and trend in current music. No one currently showcases this with such mastery the way that Travis $cott does. His second full-length album showcases his versatility as a producer, as an lyricist, and as a storyteller. Features aside, he holds his own on the same track as Kendrick Lamar in standout, âGoosebumpsâ. If this album is any indication, expect to see many more great moments from Mr. Scott.
19. Rihanna, âAntiâ â The first major release of 2016 came from Rih-Rih herself. Lead by her historic number-one single, âWorkâ, the album shows why Rihanna continues to dominate the music scene. The album features some of her absolute finest ballads (âLove on the Brainâ, âSame Olâ Mistakesâ), and her at her absolute finest (âNeeded Meâ, âKiss it Betterâ). While in some tracks its evident she should not reach of showcasing vocality, such as âHigherâ, the album is still a solid welcome. See the full review for this album available on a separate page.
18. A Tribe Called Quest, âWe got it from HereâŚThank You 4 Your serviceâ â An as a formal goodbye from one of the most acclaimed hip-hop groups to ever grace a microphone, A Tribe Called Quest blessed listeners with this cry for nostalgia. While not their finest body of work, it easily outpaces many of the releases from todayâs rappers with its underlying messages, intellect, and assertive abrasion. To name just a few standouts, would take away from the overall message of the album so Iâll suggest to start with âThe Space Programâ and end with âThe Donaldâ.
17. Metallica, âHardwireâŚTo Self Destructâ â There is no discussion on the greatest in heavy metal, without the inclusion of Metallica. After an eight year gap between this and their most recent work, this album proves why they should still be included in the discussion. The title track, âHardwiredâ, speaks volumes for itself and sets the pace for a hard hitting album that rocks on all the way through.
16. Maxwell, âBlackSUMMERSânightâ â Seven years is too long of a gap for what we need and deserve from Maxwell. He is such a gift to music. Changing the presentation of the title from his last effort, Maxwell reminds audiences why we fell in love with his last collection of greatness. The lead single, âLake by the Oceanâ, was just a sampler of an infectious collision of gems. The opener, âAll The Ways Love Can Feelâ, I would argue as one of the greatest songs of the entire year. If youâre looking for Maxwell at his finest, listen to the track âHostageâ, which is the perfect median from his last two albums. In entirety, the album is genius and draws large anticipation for where he will take listeners in the final installment of this trilogy.
15. Common, âBlack America Againâ â In the midst of the drama that is the election, Common produced one of the greatest odes to Black America in recent memory. From the cover art, to his HBCU campaign via social media, Commonâs message was clear. And his album did not fall short of displaying that genius in work. The albumâs closing track, âLetter to the Freeâ, is a perfect depiction and ending message to advocate for the message presented in a defiant, bold album worthy of its acclaim.
14. Lady Gaga, âJoanneâ â One of the most overlooked projects from 2016 is the newest release from Lady Gaga. Known for her bold, daring pop creations, Joanne is one of her most personal releases to date and matches up with some of her best work. The lead single, âPerfect Illusionâ, builds off of the successes that her former lead singles have seen in style and structure, but the remainder of the album explores the core of the pop star, revealing a side thatâs been masked over the years. âMillion Reasonsâ is one of her best singles to dates because the lyrics and power of her singing speak alone free of overproduced synths. âGrigio Girlsâ, âHey Girlâ, and âAngel Downâ prove why sheâs one of the greatest songwriters of her generation.
13. Jeezy, âTrap or Die 3â â A veteran to the rap game, Jeezy has seen many commercial successes. After experimenting with different arenas of rap, he returns to his roots: trap music. On an album that is feature heavy, Jeezy pulls his own weight with some of the most well thought out bars of his entire career. The production is also amongst his finest on an album from start to finish. While every track stands out for its own reason, âSexe (feat. Plies)â, âAinât Bout Thatâ, and âPretty Diamonds (feat. Chris Brown)â confirms he is back in his element of trapping behind the microphone.
12. J. Cole, â4 Your Eyes Onlyâ â Similar to the release of his last effort, â4 Your Eyes Onlyâ follows the low-promotion approach to music rollout in attempt to let the music speak for himself. While the effort doesnât surpass that of either of his two more recent works, it does suffice as a diligent listen. âDeja Vuâ and âFolding Clothesâ are standouts on an album that presents Cole focusing more on consistency than progression.
11. âThe Hamilton Mixtapeâ â Released in the last month of the year, âThe Hamilton Mixtapeâ is the epitome of nostalgia. As a compilation set comprised for the Broadway spectacle of the same name, this album does something that is a rarity amongst even the greatest of soundtracks (Titanic, the Bodyguard), sound like one cohesive body of work. Every song speaks its own story and brings to life the drama behind the Broadway production. The soundtrack is truly a well-vested production worthy of listening.
10. Sia, âThis is Actingâ â Long before she was a pop star herself, she was a critically acclaimed songwriter. For her most recent release, Siaâs primary interest was to showcase her skills as a seasoned, talented songwriter. Though the album is deeply regarded as being âimpersonalâ, it is very much an album true to its concrete form: a concept album. âCheap Thrillsâ was such a gem that half it made folks realize Sia actually had an album out. Her genius collaboration with Kendrick Lamar is another stand out from the album and the title speaks for the record itself: âThe Greatestâ.
9. Drake, âViewsâ â Even if you have lived under a rock for the last year, you can recite the melody to âHotline Blingâ. You can recall the splendor that was âOne Danceâ. And you most certainly canât state that you havenât heard the radio banger that was âControllaâ. But the greatest moments on Views are the album cuts. While the album is definitely not a step forward creatively from any of his previous works, it is a steady median for those looking to become in tact with the Drake that was present on âTake Careâ and âNothing Was The Sameâ. The best song of the entire album is without a doubt the collaboration with Rihanna, âToo Goodâ, which is the perfect combination of radio and depth. Other standouts include âRedemptionâ, âFaithfulâ, and âFire & Desireâ. This is definitely not Drakeâs finest hour, but it is without a doubt a steady worthwhile listen that defined 2016.
8. The Weeknd, âStarboyâ â âStarboyâ was one of the most anticipated albums of the entire year. In a way that many folks Iâm sure didnât expect, it delivered. For those hoping for more of The Weeknd that was on his earlier works, you are going to be disappointed. As evident in the singles from âBeauty Behind The Madnessâ, The Weeknd wants to continue to evolve as a pop-artist, following his inspiration behind Michael Jackson. That is present the most in album closer and second single, âI Feel it Comingâ. Not only is the style reminiscent of Michaelâs âOff The Wallâ era balladry, but the way that he coos confirms the influence Michael had on his career. That doesnât say that the record doesnât include the more edgier tracks, the uncredited feature of Future on âSix Feet Underâ, âParty Monsterâ, âReminderâ, and âSidewalks (feat. Kendrick Lamar)â provide satisfaction. The albumâs finest moments come in the form of the mid-tempo ballads, âTrue Colorsâ and âDie For Youâ, both combining the elements of alternative pop and soulful hip-hop.
7. Solange, âA Seat at the Tableâ â The perfect title for the perfect arrival of a superstar. Solange has spent majority of her career living in the shadow of her sisterâs successes, but not letting any of that define her. She has made music that she believes in and that is just as relatable; it just never quite came all the way together for the masses. And then, there was âA Seat at the Tableâ. Easily one of the yearâs most compelling stories, Solange flawlessly crafts real emotion with theatric, yet understated melodies capped off with slick, seductive production. Every single song and the interludes that coincide tell an intimate story, one worth indeed having a seat at the table to listen to. The interludes donât at all feel forced together, as they are very reminiscent of vintage Janet Jackson styled-albums. As if âCranes in the Skyâ itself isnât the gem of gems for the year, also listen to âBorderlineâ, âMadâ, âWhere Do We Goâ, and âDonât Touch My Hairâ, and it is clear that we have clearly overlooked a genius, star. Lets hope 2017 more tables are provided for us to have seats at.
6. Kanye West, âThe Life of Pabloâ â Mental state aside, thereâs no arguing when Kanye puts his mind to the studio, fire ensues. âPabloâ is no different. From start to finish, it is obvious that Mr. West has a story to tell, as present in the albumâs first song, âUltralight Beamâ. The Rihanna-assisted âFamousâ is an ode to controversy in the months that have followed itâs initial release. âWavesâ and âWolvesâ are also standouts where the production does take control, but not in a way thats overbearing; its very welcoming. While many may argue that many of the songs seem unfinished and a work in progress, the progression is what makes the album that much more enticing and satisfying to the ears. It allows you as a listener to create assumptions and do your own storytelling, which is the goal of any true author and songwriter. For what itâs worth, âPabloâ is an example of Classic Kanye doing Classic Kanye. If you still need proof, just listen to the interlude âOld Kanyeâ.
5. Frank Ocean, âBlonde/Endlessâ â The most anticipated record of 2014, 2015, and 2016 was âBoys Donât Cryâ by Frank Ocean. Instead we got âBlondeâ and âEndlessâ, two separate cohesive bodies of work. So why are they ranked together? While âEndlessâ is one visual gem put together, a la Prince, it serves as a teaser for what could come on a grander stage. That grander stage belongs to âBlondeâ. It is hard to even put Frank into a genre, as he just yearns to be someone who continues to excel to new heights with his lyrics, his ad-libs, his harmonizing, and his production. âNikesâ is the perfect opener to those experiencing curiosity to Oceanâs style and sound. âPink + Whiteâ, âSoloâ, Â and âSelf Controlâ present the vulnerable aspect of being alone, uncertain, and most of all of worth. âBlondeâ not only serves as one of the greatest musical releases, it is one of the releases that absolutely defined 2016.
4. Kendrick Lamar, âuntitled unmastered.â â Most albums that are put together of unreleased work feel uninspired. Thereâs not a universal element that brings them all together musically. It is a compilation of songs that were deemed unworthy for the album released at the time of the recording. There is something remotely different about Kendrick Lamarâs version. Weirdly enough, every âleftoverâ track is a complete gem in its own realm. And for the records to me unmastered, thereâs a sense of nostalgia that binds them altogether to where they seem to be all influenced from the same creative vision. Or, perhaps that is why Lamar selected these records â because there was a commonality that he found when listening to them. Whatever the method in discovering the potential in each of the songs, the end product was one of genius. For a man who has been robbed of his full critical accolades, maybe this serves as a teaser for what is to become in 2017. All I know is if this is what leftover tracks from the past few years look like, I fear what the ones we have yet to see released behold.
3. Bruno Mars, â24K Magicâ â One of the last releases of the year was Marâs third studio album. While the title track/lead single follows the formula that took âUptown Funkâ to #1 in 2015, the remainder of the album ventures more into rap-sung gems that bring the soul of the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s all to 2016. And unlike his counterparts, Bruno is fully capable of belting out the finest vocals right along with his cliche songwriting and divine production. âThatâs What I Likeâ is the ultimate not-so-subtle invitation to romance that radios will be eating up in 2017. Meanwhile, âVersace on the Floorâ is an infectious ballad dedicated to that special person for an anniversary, birthday occasion. If youâre looking to dance, get lost in the new-jack styled âFinesseâ, which couldâve easily fit in on your parentâs wedding reception playlist in the 1980s. With assistance from Halle Berry, âCalling All My Loveliesâ steals the show with a melody that flirts with the assumption that âall men cheatâ. However, Mars puts up quite the dissertation to defend his actions. And if youâre looking for the churning of classics like âJust The Way You Areâ and âWhen I Was Your Manâ, the albumâs closer, âToo Good To Say Goodbyeâ is a complete tear-jerker. Written and produced with the legendary Babyface, the song sounds directly out of the soundtrack to all of your favorite 90âs love stories. For a man who had many doubts about releasing an album that met everyoneâs expectations, I think its safe to say Mars has completely exceeded them with the strongest release from any male vocalist of the year.
2. Beyonce, âLemonadeâ â âYou can taste the dishonesty/its all over you breath/as you pass it off so cavalierâ coos Mrs. Carter with destain and restrain on the albumâs opener, âPray You Catch Meâ. Speculation aside from what influenced the album, Beyonce took us to a place creatively she probably didnât even think existed. After the slay that was her self-titled fifth studio album and the records it broke, what more was there for her to do? âLemonadeâ answers that question with a short film and album that tell the story of womanâs journey back to happiness after being scorn by a lover. It is not an easy journey, just see rock-infused âDonât Hurt Yourselfâ or the piano-driven âSandcastlesâ. But that doesnât say the album doesnât have some fun moments as well; the-IDGAF âSorryâ dominated radio, the reggae âHold Upâ is everyone woman scornâs first thought, and â6 Inchâ is the perfect half-time performance before going back to love and heartbreak. The absolute showstopper, however, is âFreedomâ, the rebellious anthem that adds the expertise of Kendrick Lamar. For an artist who has already achieved so many things musically, Beyonce once again cemented her legacy as a legend in this business with arguably the strongest album of her career.
Chance The Rapper, âColoring Bookâ â While technically speaking, this was a mixtape and not an album, Chance has officially marked his presence as the future of all music. For an artist who isnât signed and in control of his own music, he very meticulously crafted the best project of 2016 hands down. From start to finish, the entire project manages to color in the lines and never blur outside of them. The 2 Chains/LilâWayne assisted âNo Problemâ was an absolute juggernaut and still remains a massive hit. But thatâs not it, there are so many things to be gained from his record. What heâs able to do perhaps more than any other project released in 2016 is produce an album that feels real and relatable from start to finish. The standout, âSame Drugsâ, holds a double meaning. It derives not only from the literal content of the lyrics, but also as a metaphor for reaching new heights professionally and personally from fame and how it causes you to adjust in your life. The sexy âJuke Jamâ reminds you of the days of early, dangerous infatuation as you began to understand your hormones. âAll Nightâ shouldâve been the highlight of every radio station this fall, and even though it didnât, it certainly was a playlist favorite for everyoneâs functions. To continue on a tangent and attempt to identify just a few stand outs wouldâve be a crime as this ENTIRE album from start to finish. And it is evident with his commercial, endorsements, and appearances everywhere the Chance isnât going anywhere or going to sellout anytime soon. 2017 will be a big year for Chance, with the hope all the recognition he deserves takes him to new mainstream heights. Until then, we have âColoring Bookâ and every color properly merged on every page to depict the future of music for years to come, as long as Chance the Rapper is our author.
